Shot boundary detection (SBD) is an important first step in many video processing applications. This paper presents a simple modular convolutional neural network architecture that achieves state-of-the-art results on the RAI dataset with well above real-time inference speed even on a single mediocre GPU. The network employs dilated convolutions and operates just on small resized frames. The training process employed randomly generated transitions using selected shots from the TRECVID IACC.3 dataset. The code and a selected trained network will be available at https://github.com/soCzech/TransNet.
Although automatic shot transition detection approaches are already investigated for more than two decades, an effective universal human-level model was not proposed yet. Even for common shot transitions like hard cuts or simple gradual changes, the potential diversity of analyzed video contents may still lead to both false hits and false dismissals. Recently, deep learning-based approaches significantly improved the accuracy of shot transition detection using 3D convolutional architectures and artificially created training data. Nevertheless, one hundred percent accuracy is still an unreachab…

Sketch-an-Anchor is a novel method to train state-of-the-art Zero-shot Sketch-based Image Retrieval (ZSSBIR) models in under an epoch. Most studies break down the problem of ZSSBIR into two parts: domain alignment between images and sketches, inherited from SBIR, and generalization to unseen data, inherent to the zero-shot protocol. We argue one of these problems can be considerably simplified and re-frame the ZSSBIR problem around the already-stellar yet underexplored Zero-shot Image-based Retrieval performance of off-the-shelf models. Our fast-converging model keeps the single-domain perform…
Few-shot object detection, which aims at detecting novel objects rapidly from extremely few annotated examples of previously unseen classes, has attracted significant research interest in the community. Most existing approaches employ the Faster R-CNN as basic detection framework, yet, due to the lack of tailored considerations for data-scarce scenario, their performance is often not satisfactory. In this paper, we look closely into the conventional Faster R-CNN and analyze its contradictions from two orthogonal perspectives, namely multi-stage (RPN vs. RCNN) and multi-task (classification vs.…

Real-time understanding in video is crucial in various AI applications such as autonomous driving. This work presents a fast single-shot segmentation strategy for video scene understanding. The proposed net, called S3-Net, quickly locates and segments target sub-scenes, meanwhile extracts structured time-series semantic features as inputs to an LSTM-based spatio-temporal model. Utilizing tensorization and quantization techniques, S3-Net is intended to be lightweight for edge computing. Experiments using CityScapes, UCF11, HMDB51 and MOMENTS datasets demonstrate that the proposed S3-Net achieve…
Detection of video shot transition is a crucial pre-processing step in video analysis. Previous studies are restricted on detecting sudden content changes between frames through similarity measurement and multi-scale operations are widely utilized to deal with transitions of various lengths. However, localization of gradual transitions are still under-explored due to the high visual similarity between adjacent frames. Cut shot transitions are abrupt semantic breaks while gradual shot transitions contain low-level spatial-temporal patterns caused by video effects in addition to the gradual sema…

Object detection and instance segmentation in remote sensing images is a fundamental and challenging task, due to the complexity of scenes and targets. The latest methods tried to take into account both the efficiency and the accuracy of instance segmentation. In order to improve both of them, in this paper, we propose a single-shot convolutional neural network structure, which is conceptually simple and straightforward, and meanwhile makes up for the problem of low accuracy of single-shot networks. Our method, termed with SSS-Net, detects targets based on the location of the object's center a…
Autonomous agents interacting with the real world need to learn new concepts efficiently and reliably. This requires learning in a low-data regime, which is a highly challenging problem. We address this task by introducing a fast optimization-based meta-learning method for few-shot classification. It consists of an embedding network, providing a general representation of the image, and a base learner module. The latter learns a linear classifier during the inference through an unrolled optimization procedure. We design an inner learning objective composed of (i) a robust classification loss on…

The ultimate goal of a baby detection task concerns detecting the presence of a baby and other objects in a sequence of 2D images, tracking them and understanding the semantic contents of the scene. Recent advances in deep learning and computer vision offer various powerful tools in general object detection and can be applied to a baby detection task. In this paper, the Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network and the Single-Shot Multi-Box Detection approaches are explored. They are the two state-of-the-art object detectors based on the region proposal tactic and the multi-box tactic. …
For applications in navigation and robotics, estimating the 3D pose of objects is as important as detection. Many approaches to pose estimation rely on detecting or tracking parts or keypoints [11, 21]. In this paper we build on a recent state-of-the-art convolutional network for slidingwindow detection [10] to provide detection and rough pose estimation in a single shot, without intermediate stages of detecting parts or initial bounding boxes. While not the first system to treat pose estimation as a categorization problem, this is the first attempt to combine detection and pose estimation at …

To mitigate the detection performance drop caused by domain shift, we aim to develop a novel few-shot adaptation approach that requires only a few target domain images with limited bounding box annotations. To this end, we first observe several significant challenges. First, the target domain data is highly insufficient, making most existing domain adaptation methods ineffective. Second, object detection involves simultaneous localization and classification, further complicating the model adaptation process. Third, the model suffers from over-adaptation (similar to overfitting when training wi…

One-shot image generation (OSG) with generative adversarial networks that learn from the internal patches of a given image has attracted world wide attention. In recent studies, scholars have primarily focused on extracting features of images from probabilistically distributed inputs with pure convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, it is quite difficult for CNNs with limited receptive domain to extract and maintain the global structural information. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel structure-preserved method TcGAN with individual vision transformer to overcome the shortcomi…

Shot boundary detection (SBD) is an important pre-processing step for video manipulation. Here, each segment of frames is classified as either sharp, gradual or no transition. Current SBD techniques analyze hand-crafted features and attempt to optimize both detection accuracy and processing speed. However, the heavy computations of optical flow prevents this. To achieve this aim, we present an SBD technique based on spatio-temporal Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). Since current datasets are not large enough to train an accurate SBD CNN, we present a new dataset containing more than 3.5 mil…
Current supervised methods for facial landmark detection require a large amount of training data and may suffer from overfitting to specific datasets due to the massive number of parameters. We introduce a semi-supervised method in which the crucial idea is to first generate implicit face knowledge from the large amounts of unlabeled images of faces available today. In a first, completely unsupervised stage, we train an adversarial autoencoder to reconstruct faces via a low-dimensional face embedding. In a second, supervised stage, we interleave the decoder with transfer layers to retask the g…

The well-known word analogy experiments show that the recent word vectors capture fine-grained linguistic regularities in words by linear vector offsets, but it is unclear how well the simple vector offsets can encode visual regularities over words. We study a particular image-word relevance relation in this paper. Our results show that the word vectors of relevant tags for a given image rank ahead of the irrelevant tags, along a principal direction in the word vector space. Inspired by this observation, we propose to solve image tagging by estimating the principal direction for an image. Part…

In the same vein of discriminative one-shot learning, Siamese networks allow recognizing an object from a single exemplar with the same class label. However, they do not take advantage of the underlying structure of the data and the relationship among the multitude of samples as they only rely on pairs of instances for training. In this paper, we propose a new quadruplet deep network to examine the potential connections among the training instances, aiming to achieve a more powerful representation. We design four shared networks that receive multi-tuple of instances as inputs and are connected…

The one-shot approach, DeepMark, for fast clothing detection as a modification of a multi-target network, CenterNet, is proposed in the paper. The state-of-the-art accuracy of 0.723 mAP for bounding box detection task and 0.532 mAP for landmark detection task on the DeepFashion2 Challenge dataset were achieved. The proposed architecture can be used effectively on the low-power devices.
Objects appear to scale differently in natural images. This fact requires methods dealing with object-centric tasks (e.g. object proposal) to have robust performance over variances in object scales. In the paper, we present a novel segment proposal framework, namely FastMask, which takes advantage of hierarchical features in deep convolutional neural networks to segment multi-scale objects in one shot. Innovatively, we adapt segment proposal network into three different functional components (body, neck and head). We further propose a weight-shared residual neck module as well as a scale-toler…
Small objects detection is a challenging task in computer vision due to its limited resolution and information. In order to solve this problem, the majority of existing methods sacrifice speed for improvement in accuracy. In this paper, we aim to detect small objects at a fast speed, using the best object detector Single Shot Multibox Detector (SSD) with respect to accuracy-vs-speed trade-off as base architecture. We propose a multi-level feature fusion method for introducing contextual information in SSD, in order to improve the accuracy for small objects. In detailed fusion operation, we des…
Shot boundary detection (SBD) is an important component of many video analysis tasks, such as action recognition, video indexing, summarization and editing. Previous work typically used a combination of low-level features like color histograms, in conjunction with simple models such as SVMs. Instead, we propose to learn shot detection end-to-end, from pixels to final shot boundaries. For training such a model, we rely on our insight that all shot boundaries are generated. Thus, we create a dataset with one million frames and automatically generated transitions such as cuts, dissolves and fades…
Few-shot object detection (FSOD) aims at learning a detector that can fast adapt to previously unseen objects with scarce annotated examples, which is challenging and demanding. Existing methods solve this problem by performing subtasks of classification and localization utilizing a shared component (e.g., RoI head) in the detector, yet few of them take the distinct preferences of two subtasks towards feature embedding into consideration. In this paper, we carefully analyze the characteristics of FSOD, and present that a general few-shot detector should consider the explicit decomposition of t…
Low-shot learning methods for image classification support learning from sparse data. We extend these techniques to support dense semantic image segmentation. Specifically, we train a network that, given a small set of annotated images, produces parameters for a Fully Convolutional Network (FCN). We use this FCN to perform dense pixel-level prediction on a test image for the new semantic class. Our architecture shows a 25% relative meanIoU improvement compared to the best baseline methods for one-shot segmentation on unseen classes in the PASCAL VOC 2012 dataset and is at least 3 times faster.

This paper proposes a few-shot method based on Faster R-CNN and representation learning for object detection in aerial images. The two classification branches of Faster R-CNN are replaced by prototypical networks for online adaptation to new classes. These networks produce embeddings vectors for each generated box, which are then compared with class prototypes. The distance between an embedding and a prototype determines the corresponding classification score. The resulting networks are trained in an episodic manner. A new detection task is randomly sampled at each epoch, consisting in detecti…
Transfer learning based approaches have recently achieved promising results on the few-shot detection task. These approaches however suffer from ``catastrophic forgetting'' issue due to finetuning of base detector, leading to sub-optimal performance on the base classes. Furthermore, the slow convergence rate of stochastic gradient descent (SGD) results in high latency and consequently restricts real-time applications. We tackle the aforementioned issues in this work. We pose few-shot detection as a hierarchical learning problem, where the novel classes are treated as the child classes of exist…

Object tracking has achieved significant progress over the past few years. However, state-of-the-art trackers become increasingly heavy and expensive, which limits their deployments in resource-constrained applications. In this work, we present LightTrack, which uses neural architecture search (NAS) to design more lightweight and efficient object trackers. Comprehensive experiments show that our LightTrack is effective. It can find trackers that achieve superior performance compared to handcrafted SOTA trackers, such as SiamRPN++ and Ocean, while using much fewer model Flops and parameters. Mo…
Scenes play a crucial role in breaking the storyline of movies and TV episodes into semantically cohesive parts. However, given their complex temporal structure, finding scene boundaries can be a challenging task requiring large amounts of labeled training data. To address this challenge, we present a self-supervised shot contrastive learning approach (ShotCoL) to learn a shot representation that maximizes the similarity between nearby shots compared to randomly selected shots. We show how to apply our learned shot representation for the task of scene boundary detection to offer state-of-the-a…
In object detection, the detection backbone consumes more than half of the overall inference cost. Recent researches attempt to reduce this cost by optimizing the backbone architecture with the help of Neural Architecture Search (NAS). However, existing NAS methods for object detection require hundreds to thousands of GPU hours of searching, making them impractical in fast-paced research and development. In this work, we propose a novel zero-shot NAS method to address this issue. The proposed method, named MAE-DET, automatically designs efficient detection backbones via the Maximum Entropy Pri…
While 3D-3D registration is traditionally tacked by optimization-based methods, recent work has shown that learning-based techniques could achieve faster and more robust results. In this context, however, only PRNet can handle the partial-to-partial registration scenario. Unfortunately, this is achieved at the cost of relying on an iterative procedure, with a complex network architecture. Here, we show that learning-based partial-to-partial registration can be achieved in a one-shot manner, jointly reducing network complexity and increasing registration accuracy. To this end, we propose an Opt…

Training Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) on high-fidelity images usually requires large-scale GPU-clusters and a vast number of training images. In this paper, we study the few-shot image synthesis task for GAN with minimum computing cost. We propose a light-weight GAN structure that gains superior quality on 1024*1024 resolution. Notably, the model converges from scratch with just a few hours of training on a single RTX-2080 GPU, and has a consistent performance, even with less than 100 training samples. Two technique designs constitute our work, a skip-layer channel-wise excitation mod…
Few-shot object detection (FSOD) aims to detect objects using only a few examples. How to adapt state-of-the-art object detectors to the few-shot domain remains challenging. Object proposal is a key ingredient in modern object detectors. However, the quality of proposals generated for few-shot classes using existing methods is far worse than that of many-shot classes, e.g., missing boxes for few-shot classes due to misclassification or inaccurate spatial locations with respect to true objects. To address the noisy proposal problem, we propose a novel meta-learning based FSOD model by jointly o…

Training a supernet matters for one-shot neural architecture search (NAS) methods since it serves as a basic performance estimator for different architectures (paths). Current methods mainly hold the assumption that a supernet should give a reasonable ranking over all paths. They thus treat all paths equally, and spare much effort to train paths. However, it is harsh for a single supernet to evaluate accurately on such a huge-scale search space (e.g., $7^{21}$). In this paper, instead of covering all paths, we ease the burden of supernet by encouraging it to focus more on evaluation of those p…

We propose a neural rendering-based system that creates head avatars from a single photograph. Our approach models a person's appearance by decomposing it into two layers. The first layer is a pose-dependent coarse image that is synthesized by a small neural network. The second layer is defined by a pose-independent texture image that contains high-frequency details. The texture image is generated offline, warped and added to the coarse image to ensure a high effective resolution of synthesized head views. We compare our system to analogous state-of-the-art systems in terms of visual quality a…
