Hydrogen exhibits unusual behaviors at megabar pressures, with consequences for planetary science, condensed matter physics and materials science. Experiments at such extreme conditions are challenging, often resulting in hard-to-interpret and controversial observations. We present a theoretical study of the phase diagram of dense hydrogen, using machine learning to overcome time and length scale limitations while describing accurately interatomic forces. We reproduce the re-entrant melting behavior and the polymorphism of the solid phase. In simulations based on the machine learning potential we find evidence for continuous metallization in the liquid, as a first-order liquid-liquid transition is pre-empted by freezing. This suggests a smooth transition between insulating and metallic layers in giant gas planets, and reconciles existing discrepancies between experiments as a manifestation of supercritical behavior.
Understanding physics of gas giants requires the knowledge about the behavior of hydrogen at extreme pressures and temperatures. Molecular hydrogen in these planets is supercritical, and has been considered as a physically homogeneous state where no differences can be made between a liquid and a gas and where all properties undergo no marked or distinct changes with pressure and temperature, the picture believed to hold below the dissociation and metallization transition. Here, we show that in Jupiter and Saturn, supercritical molecular hydrogen undergoes a dynamic transition around 10 GPa and…
A direct measure of hydrogen bonding in water under conditions ranging from the normal state to the supercritical regime is derived from the Compton scattering of inelastically-scattered X-rays. First, we show that a measure of the number of electrons $n_e$ involved in hydrogen bonding at varying thermodynamic conditions can be directly obtained from Compton profile differences. Then, we use first-principles simulations to provide a connection between $n_e$ and the number of hydrogen bonds $n_{HB}$. Our study shows that over the broad range studied the relationship between $n_e$ and $n_{HB}$ i…
We have studied in detail the transition from gas-like to rigid liquid-like behaviour in supercritical $N_2$ at 300 K (2.4 $T_C$). Our study combines neutron diffraction and Raman spectroscopy with empirical potential structure refinement and ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations. We observe a narrow transition from gas-like to rigid liquid-like behaviour at ca. 150 MPa, which we associate with the Frenkel line. Our findings allow us to reliably characterize the Frenkel line using both diffraction and spectroscopy methods, backed up by simulation, for the same substance. We clearly lay out …
The principal Hugoniot for liquid hydrogen was obtained up to 55 GPa under laser-driven shock loading. Pressure and density of compressed hydrogen were determined by impedance-matching to a quartz standard. The shock temperature was independently measured from the brightness of the shock front. Hugoniot data of hydrogen provide a good benchmark to modern theories of condensed matter. The initial number density of liquid hydrogen is lower than that for liquid deuterium, and this results in shock compressed hydrogen having a higher compression and higher temperature than deuterium at the same sh…
We develop an approach to liquid thermodynamics based on collective modes. We perform extensive molecular dynamics simulations of noble, molecular and metallic liquids and provide the direct evidence that liquid energy and specific heat are well-described by the temperature dependence of the Frenkel (hopping) frequency. The agreement between predicted and calculated thermodynamic properties is seen in the notably wide range of temperature spanning tens of thousands of Kelvin. The range includes both subcritical liquids and supercritical fluids. We discuss the structural crossover and inter-rel…
Nuclear spins are known to experience spontaneous long-range correlations only below 2.5 mili-Kelvin in superfluid $^3$He. Here we present the first evidence of nuclear spin coupling in molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) at 74-92 Kelvin using neutron scattering, showing a fundamental change in nature from the incoherent scattering universally expected from hydrogen, which reflects single particle properties of uncorrelated nuclear spins, to coherent, with a peak materializing on the elastic line, indicating H$_2$-H$_2$ nuclear spin correlations. In this novel phase, the dynamic response of the system …
We have mapped the molecular-atomic transition in liquid hydrogen using first principles molecular dynamics. We predict that a molecular phase with short-range orientational order exists at pressures above 100 GPa. The presence of this ordering and the structure emerging near the dissociation transition provide an explanation for the sharpness of the molecular-atomic crossover and the concurrent pressure drop at high pressures. Our findings have non-trivial implications for simulations of hydrogen; previous equation of state data for the molecular liquid may require revision. Arguments for the…
We examine the molecular-atomic transition in liquid hydrogen as it relates to metallization. Pair potentials are obtained from first principles molecular dynamics and compared with potentials derived from quadratic response. The results provide insight into the nature of covalent bonding under extreme conditions. Based on this analysis, we construct a schematic dissociation-metallization phase diagram and suggest experimental approaches that should significantly reduce the pressures necessary for the realization of the elusive metallic phase of hydrogen.
The properties of hydrogen at high pressure have wide implications in astrophysics and high-pressure physics. Its phase change in the liquid is variously described as a metallization, H2-dissociation, density discontinuity or plasma phase transition. It has been tacitly assumed that these phenomena coincide at a first-order liquid-liquid transition (LLT). In this work, the relevant pressure-temperature conditions are thoroughly explored with first-principles molecular dynamics. We show there is a large dependency on exchange-correlation functional and significant finite size effects. We use hy…
Liquid-liquid phase transition of hydrogen is at the center of hydrogen phase diagram as a promising route towards emergent properties such as the Wigner-Huntington metallization, superconductivity, and superfluidity. Here we report a study on the liquid-liquid phase transition of hydrogen using the state-of-the-art diffusion quantum Monte Carlo and density functional theory calculations. Our results suggest that the metallization process happens at lower pressures and temperatures compared to the structural phase transition of molecular to atomic hydrogen. The consequence is that metallized m…
Hydrogen at high temperature and pressure undergoes a phase transition from a liquid molecular phase to a conductive atomic state, or liquid metallic hydrogen, sometimes referred to as the plasma phase transition (PPT). The PPT phase line was observed in a recent experiment studying laser-pulse heated hydrogen in a diamond anvil cell in the pressure range $\sim 100 - 170 \text{GPa}$ for temperatures up to $\sim 2000 \text{K}$. The experimental signatures of the transition are (i) a negative pressure-temperature slope, (ii) a plateau in the heating curve, assumed to be related to the latent hea…
Ionic liquids (ILs) gain much interest as possible electrolytes in the next generation of mixed-solid Li-ion batteries. However, such properties of ionic liquids as melting transition, diffusion, strength and structure of hydrogen bond network remain poorly investigated. Here 2H NMR study of a prototypical ionic liquid [TEA][NTf2] has been performed. We show that the dynamical melting occurs through a dynamically heterogeneous phase stable between 223-277 K and the transition process is characterized by two standard molar enthalpy changes indicating to the multistage nature of the melting. The…
We compute the electrical conductivity for liquid hydrogen at high pressure using quantum Monte Carlo. The method uses Coupled Electron-Ion Monte Carlo to generate configurations of liquid hydrogen. For each configuration correlated sampling of electrons is performed in order to calculate a set of lowest many-body eigenstates and current-current correlation functions of the system, which are summed over in the many-body Kubo formula to give AC electrical conductivity directly. The extrapolated DC conductivity at 3000 K for several densities shows a liquid semiconductor to liquid-metal transiti…
Using first-principles molecular dynamics, we study the influence of nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) and nonlocal exchange--correlation density functionals (DFs) near molecular dissociation in liquid hydrogen. NQEs strongly influence intramolecular properties, such as bond stability, and are thus an essential part of the dissociation process. Moreover, by including DFs that account for either the self-interaction error or dispersion interactions, we find a much better description of molecular dissociation and metallization than previous studies based on classical protons and/or local or semi-lo…
Recent research suggests that the supercritical state consists of liquidlike and gaslike states where particle dynamics and key system properties are qualitatively different. We report experimental evidence of the structural crossover in supercritical neon at pressure and temperature conditions significantly exceeding the critical point values: 250$\,P_c$ and 6.6$\,T_c$. The experimental results show a crossover of the medium-range order structure evidenced by the change of the structure factor with pressure. We also observe the crossover of the short-range order structure indicated by changes…
We analyze in detail the electronic properties of high pressure hydrogen around the liquid-liquid phase transition based on Coupled Electron-Ion Monte Carlo calculations. Computing the off-diagonal single particle density matrix and the momentum distribution we discuss localization properties of the electrons. The abrupt changes of these distributions indicate a metal to insulator transition occurring together with the structural transition from the atomic to molecular fluid. We further discuss the electron-proton and electron-electron pair correlation functions, which also change abruptly at …
The study of the high pressure phase diagram of hydrogen has continued with renewed effort for about one century as it remains a fundamental challenge for experimental and theoretical techniques. Here we employ an efficient molecular dynamics based on the quantum Monte Carlo method, which can describe accurately the electronic correlation and treat a large number of hydrogen atoms, allowing a realistic and reliable prediction of thermodynamic roperties. We find that the molecular liquid phase is unexpectedly stable and the transition towards a fully atomic liquid phase occurs at much higher pr…
The ab-initio phase diagram of dense hydrogen is very sensitive to errors in the treatment of electronic correlation. Recently, it has been shown that the choice of the density functional has a large effect on the predicted location of both the liquid-liquid phase transition and the solid insulator-to-metal transition in dense hydrogen. To identify the most accurate functional for dense hydrogen applications, we systematically benchmark some of the most commonly used functionals using Quantum Monte Carlo. By considering several measures of functional accuracy, we conclude that the van der Waal…
In this work we show, that atomic metallic hydrogen (AMH) is formed inside of sintered oxide-nickel electrodes of nickel-cadmium battery over a long period of electrochemical hydrogenation (more than five years). It was established that density AMH is 12 times higher, than the density of liquid molecular hydrogen, the specific energy of hydrogen recombination is 20 times higher than of liquid hydrogen-oxygen fuel. At the room temperature AMH is a good conductor, but not a superconductor.
The insulator-to-metal transition in dense fluid hydrogen is an essential phenomenon to understand gas giant planetary interiors and the physical and chemical behavior of highly compressed condensed matter. Using fast laser spectroscopy techniques to probe hydrogen and deuterium precompressed in a diamond anvil cell and laser heated on microsecond timescales, we observe an onset of metal-like reflectivity in the visible spectral range at P>150 GPa and T>3000 K. The reflectance increases rapidly with decreasing photon energy indicating free-electron metallic behavior with a plasma edge in the v…
Quantum effects in condensed matter normally only occur at low temperatures. Here we show a large quantum effect in high-pressure liquid hydrogen at thousands of Kelvins. We show that the metallization transition in hydrogen is subject to a very large isotope effect, occurring hundreds of degrees lower than the equivalent transition in deuterium. We examined this using path integral molecular dynamics simulations which identify a liquid-liquid transition involving atomization, metallization, and changes in viscosity, specific heat and compressibility. The difference between H$_2$ and D$_2$ is …
Using Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations, we investigate the insulator-metal transition observed in liquid hydrogen at high pressure. Below the critical temperature of the transition from the molecular to the atomic liquid, the fundamental electronic gap closure occurs abruptly, with a small discontinuity reflecting the weak first-order transition in the thermodynamic equation of state. Above the critical temperature, molecular dissociation sets in while the gap is still open. When the gap closes, the decay of the off-diagonal reduced density matrix shows that the liquid enters a gapless, …
Metallization of initially insulating VO2 via ionic liquid electrolytes (electrolyte gating) has recently been a topic of much interest. It is clear that the metallization takes place electrochemically and there has previously been extensive evidence for the removal of small amounts of oxygen during ionic liquid gating. Hydrogen intercalation has also been proposed, but the source of the hydrogen has remained unclear. In this work, solid-state magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy is used to investigate the thermal metal-insulator transition in VO2, before progressing to catalytically hydrogen…
Extraction of hydrofluoric acid (HF) from oils is a drastically important problem in petroleum industry, since HF causes quick corrosion of pipe lines and brings severe health problems to humanity. Some ionic liquids (ILs) constitute promising scavenger agents thanks to strong binding to polar compounds and tunability. PM7-MD simulations and hybrid density functional theory are employed here to consider HF capture ability of ILs. Discussing the effects and impacts of the cation and the anion separately and together, I will evaluate performance of imidazolium acetate and outline systematic sear…
Liquid atomic metallic hydrogen is the simplest, lightest, and most abundant of all liquid metals. The role of nucleon motions or ion dynamics has been somewhat ignored in relation to the dissociative insulator-metal transition. Almost all previous experimental high-pressure studies have treated the fluid isotopes, hydrogen and deuterium, with no distinction. Studying both hydrogen and deuterium at the same density, most crucially at the phase transition line, can experimentally reveal the importance of ion dynamics. We use static compression to study the optical properties of dense deuterium …
The supercooled state of bulk water is largely hidden by unavoidable crystallization, which creates an experimentally inaccessible temperature regime - a 'no man's land'. We address this and circumvent the crystallization problem by systematically studying the supercooled dynamics of hydrogen bonded oligomeric liquids (glycols), where water corresponds to the chain-ends alone. This novel approach permits a 'dilution of water' by altering the hydrogen bond concentration via variations in chain length. We observe a dynamic crossover in the temperature dependence of the structural relaxation time…
Supercritical fluids play a significant role in elucidating fundamental aspects of liquid matter under extreme conditions. They have been extensively studied at pressures and temperatures relevant to various industrial applications. However, much less is known about the structural behaviour of supercritical fluids and no structural crossovers have been observed in static compression experiments in any temperature and pressure ranges beyond the critical point. The structure of supercritical state is currently perceived to be uniform everywhere on the pressure-temperature phase diagram, and to c…
In this work, we report on inelastic X-ray scattering experiments combined with the molecular dynamics simulations on deeply supercritical Ar. The presented results unveil the mechanism and regimes of sound propagation in the liquid matter and provide compelling evidence for the adiabatic-to-isothermal longitudinal sound propagation transition. We introduce a Hamiltonian predicting low-frequency transverse sound propagation gaps, which is confirmed by experimental findings and molecular dynamics calculations. As a result, a universal link is established between the positive sound dispersion (P…
Experiments and computer simulations have shown that the melt-ing temperature of solid hydrogen drops with pressure above about 65 GPa, suggesting that a liquid state might exist at low temperatures. It has also been suggested that this low temperature liquid state might be non-molecular and metallic, although evidence for such behaviour is lacking. Here, we report results for hydrogen at high pressures using ab initio path-integral molecular dynamics methods, which include a description of the quantum motion of the protons at finite temperatures. We have determined the melting temperature as …
The local intermolecular structure and related dynamics in the liquid cis-trans N-methylformamide mixture at ambient temperature and density conditions have been systematically studied by employing Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulation techniques. Particular attention has been paid to the local structure around the cis- and trans- conformers and the formation and dynamics of hydrogen bonds with their closest neighbors. The calculated atom-atom radial distribution functions are in very good agreement with available experimental data and reveal the existence of different types of hydrog…
We propose an ab-initio molecular dynamics method, capable to reduce dramatically the autocorrelation time required for the simulation of classical and quantum particles at finite temperature. The method is based on an efficient implementation of a first order Langevin dynamics modified by means of a suitable, position dependent acceleration matrix $S$. Here we apply this technique, within a Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) based wavefuntion approach and within the Born-Oppheneimer approximation, for determining the phase diagram of high-pressure Hydrogen with simulations much longer than the autocor…
Optical properties of compressed fluid hydrogen in the region where dissociation and metallization is observed are computed by ab-initio methods and compared to recent experimental results. We confirm that above 3000 K both processes are continuous while below 1500K the first order phase transition is accompanied by a discontinuity of the DC conductivity and the thermal conductivity, while both the reflectivity and absorption coefficient vary rapidly but continuously. Our results support the recent analysis of NIF experiments (P. Celliers et al, Science 361, 677-682 (2018)) which assigned the …
Dynamic compression has been used to synthesize liquid metallic hydrogen at 140 GPa (1.4 million bar) and experimental data and theory predict Al2O3 might be a metallic glass at ~300 GPa. The mechanism of metallization in both cases is probably a Mott-like transition. The strength of sapphire causes shock dissipation to be split differently in the strong solid and soft fluid. Once the 4.5-eV H-H and Al-O bonds are broken at sufficiently high pressures in liquid H2 and in sapphire (single-crystal Al2O3), electrons are delocalized, which leads to formation of energy bands in fluid H and probably…
We report first principle results for nuclear structure and optical responses of high pressure liquid hydrogen along two isotherms in the region of molecular dissociation. We employ Density Functional Theory with the vdW-DF approximation (vdW) and we benchmark the results against existing predictions from Coupling Electron-Ion Monte Carlo (CEIMC). At fixed density and temperature, we find that pressure from vdW is higher than pressure from CEIMC by about 10 GPa in the molecular insulating phase and about 20 GPa in the dissociated metallic phase. Molecules are found to be overstabilized using v…
