H$_2$O maser emission associated with the massive star formation region W49N were observed with the Space-VLBI mission RadioAstron. The procedure for processing of the maser spectral line data obtained in the RadioAstron observations is described. Ultra-fine spatial structures in the maser emission were detected on space-ground baselines of up to 9.6 Earth diameters. The correlated flux densities of these features range from 0.1% to 0.6% of the total flux density. These low values of correlated flux density are probably due to turbulence either in the maser itself or in the interstellar medium.
We present estimates of brightness temperature for 5 galactic masers in star-forming regions detected at space baselines. Very compact features with angular sizes of about 23-60 micro arcsec were detected in these regions with corresponding linear sizes of about 4-10 million km. Brightness temperatures range from 1e+14 up to 1e+16 K.
Observations of the masers in the course of RadioAstron mission yielded detections of fringes for a number of sources in both water and hydroxyl maser transitions. Several sources display numerous ultra-compact details. This proves that implementation of the space VLBI technique for maser studies is possible technically and is not always prevented by the interstellar scattering, maser beaming and other effects related to formation, transfer, and detection of the cosmic maser emission. For the first time, cosmic water maser emission was detected with projected baselines exceeding Earth Diameter…
The RadioAstron space-VLBI mission has successfully detected extragalactic H2O MegaMaser emission regions at very long Earth to space baselines ranging between 1.4 and 26.7 Earth Diameters (ED). The preliminary results for two galaxies, NGC3079 and NGC4258, at baselines longer than one ED indicate masering environments and excitation conditions in these galaxies that are distinctly different. Further observations of NGC4258 at longer baselines will reveal more of the physics of individual emission regions.
We have carried out a multi-epoch simultaneous survey of 22 GHz H$_2$O and 44 GHz Class I CH$_3$OH masers toward 103 ultracompact HII regions (UCHIIs) between 2010 and 2017. We detected H$_2$O and CH$_3$OH maser emission in 74 (72%) and 55 (53%) UCHIIs, respectively. Among them, 3 H$_2$O and 27 CH$_3$OH maser sources are new detections. These high detection rates suggest that the occurrence periods of both maser species are significantly overlapped with the UCHII phase of massive star formation. The CH$_3$OH maser lines always have small (< 10 km s$^{-1}$) relative velocities with respect to t…
Context: The Red MSX Source (RMS) survey has identified a large sample of candidate massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) and ultra compact (UC) HII regions from a sample of ~2000 MSX and 2MASS colour selected sources. Aims: To search for H2O masers towards a large sample of young high mass stars and to investigate the statistical correlation of H2O masers with the earliest stages of massive star formation. Methods: We have used the Mopra Radio telescope to make position-switched observations towards ~500 UCHII regions and MYSOs candidates identified from the RMS survey and located between 190…

We report the discovery of the first 14NH3 (2,2) maser, seen in the Sgr B2 Main star forming region near the center of the Milky Way, using data from the Very Large Array radio telescope. The maser is seen in both lower resolution (3" or ~0.1 pc) data from 2012 and higher resolution (0''.1 or ~1000 AU) data from 2018. In the higher resolution data ammonia (2,2) maser emission is detected toward 5 independent spots. The maser spots are not spatially or kinematically coincident with any other masers in this region, or with the peaks of the radio continuum emission from the numerous ultracompact …
We present the first detection of extragalactic hydrogen recombination line maser emission in the H26alpha transition toward the inner 13.5 pc nuclear region of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 using ALMA data. In regions with complex continuum emission (dust, free-free and synchrotron) we propose to use the recombination line spectral index, $α_\mathrm{L}$ ($S_\mathrm{L}\cdot Δv \propto ν^{α_\mathrm{L}}$), between the H30alpha and the H26alpha lines to study the structure of ultra-compact HII regions and to identify maser emission ($α_\mathrm{L}> 2.1$) from ionized winds. The measured values of $…
We present 1" resolution CARMA observations of the 3mm continuum and 95 GHz methanol masers toward 14 candidate high mass protostellar objects (HMPOs). Dust continuum emission is detected toward seven HMPOs, and methanol masers toward 5 sources. The 3mm continuum sources have diameters < 2x10^4 AU, masses between 21 and 1200 M_sun, and volume densities > 10^8 cm^-3. Most of the 3mm continuum sources are spatially coincident with compact HII regions and/or water masers, and are presumed to be formation sites of massive stars. A strong correlation exists between the presence of 3mm continuum emi…
We conducted VLA C-configuration observations to measure positions and luminosities of Galactic Class II 6.7 GHz methanol masers and their associated ultra-compact H II regions. The spectral resolution was 3.90625 kHz and the continuum sensitivity reached 45 \uJypb. We mapped 372 methanol masers with peak flux densities of more than 2 Jy selected from the literature, 367 of them were detected. Absolute positions have nominal uncertainties of 0.3 arcsec. In this first paper on the data analysis, we present three catalogs, the first gives information on the strongest feature of 367 methanol mase…
The southern maser site OH 300.969+1.147 has been studied using the Long Baseline Array of the Australia Telescope National Facility. The 1665- and 1667-MHz hydroxyl ground-state transitions were observed simultaneously. A series of maps with tenth-arcsec spatial resolution, at velocity spacing 0.09 km/s, and in both senses of circular polarization, reveal 59 small diameter maser spots. The spots are scattered over 2-arcsec, coincident with a strong ultracompact HII region, at a distance of 4.3 kpc. 17 Zeeman pairs of oppositely polarized spots were found, all yielding magnetic field estimates…
The hydroxyl radical (OH) is found in various environments within the interstellar medium (ISM) of the Milky Way and external galaxies, mostly either in diffuse interstellar clouds or in the warm, dense environments of newly formed low-mass and high-mass stars, i.e, in the dense shells of compact and ultracompact HII regions (UCHIIRs). Until today, most studies of interstellar OH involved the molecule's radio wavelength hyperfine structure (hfs) transitions. These lines are generally not in LTE and either masing or over-cooling complicates their interpretation. In the past, observations of tra…
A sample of 30 H2O extra-galactic maser galaxies with their published HCN(J=1-0) and HCO+(J=1-0) observations has been compiled to investigate the dense gas correlation with H2O maser emission. Our sample number exceeds the size of the previous HCN samples studied so far by a factor of three, and it is the first study on the possible relation with the dense gas tracer HCO+. We find a strong correlation between normalized H2O maser emission luminosity (LH2O\LCO) and normalized HCO+ line luminosity (LHCO+\LCO). Moreover, a weak correlation has been found between LH2O\LCO and normalized HCN line …
We present an interferometric survey of the 44 GHz class I methanol maser transition toward a sample of 69 sources consisting of High Mass Protostellar Object candidates and Ultracompact (UC) H II regions. We found a 38% detection rate (16 of 42) in the HMPO candidates and a 54% detection rate (13 of 24) for the regions with ionized gas. This result indicates that class I methanol maser emission is more common toward more evolved young stellar objects of our sample. Comparing with similar interferometric data sets, our observations show narrower linewidths, likely due to our higher spatial res…
The 6.7 GHz maser transition of methanol has been found exclusively towards massive star forming regions. A majority of the masers have been found to lack the presence of any associated radio continuum. This could be due to the maser emission originating prior to the formation of an HII region around the central star, or from the central object being too cool to produce a HII region. One way to distinguish between the two scenarios is to determine and model the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the masers. We observed a sample of 20 6.7 GHz methanol masers selected from the blind Arecibo…
Periodic or regular flaring of class II methanol masers in nine high mass star forming regions is now a well established phenomenon. Amongst the nine star forming regions, G37.55+0.20 is the only case at present where apart from the presence of a periodic class II methanol maser, correlated flaring of another masing species, formaldehyde in this case, has been detected. We perform numerical calculations to investigate under which conditions the 4.8 GHz transition of ortho-formaldehyde is inverted in order to address the question of the correlated flaring of the 6.7 GHz methanol and 4.8 GHz for…
Among the tracers of the earliest phases in the massive star formation process, methanol masers have gained increasing importance. The phenomenological distinction between Class I and II methanol masers is based on their spatial association with objects such as jets, cores, and ultracompact HII regions, but is also believed to correspond to different pumping mechanisms: radiation for Class II masers, collisions for Class I masers. In this work, we have surveyed a large sample of massive star forming regions - 296 objects divided into two groups named 'High' and 'Low' according to their [25-12]…
Results of monitoring the H$_2$O and OH masers in W44C, located near the cometary HII region G34.3+0.15, are reported. Observations in the water-vapor line at $λ= 1.35$ cm were carried out on the 22-meter radio telescope of the Pushchino Radio Astronomy Observatory (Russia) from November 1979 to March 2011, and in the hydroxyl lines at $λ= 18$ cm on the Large Nan{ç}ay radio telescope (France). Activity maxima and minima of the water maser alternated. The average period of the activity is $\sim 14$ years, consistent with results obtained earlier for a number of other sources associated with reg…
We present the results of ALMA band-5 (~170 GHz) observations of the merging ultraluminous infrared galaxy, the "Superantennae" (IRAS 19254-7245) at z=0.0617, which has been diagnosed as containing a luminous obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN). In addition to dense molecular line emission (HCN, HCO+, and HNC J = 2-1), we detect a highly luminous (~6e4Lsun) 183 GHz H2O 3(1,3)-2(2,0) emission line. We interpret the strong H2O emission as largely originating in maser amplification in AGN-illuminated dense and warm molecular gas, based on (1) the spatially compact (<220 pc) nature of the H2O e…
We present high angular resolution Submillimeter Array (SMA) and Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations of the massive protocluster G18.67+0.03. Previously targeted in maser surveys of GLIMPSE Extended Green Objects (EGOs), this cluster contains three Class I methanol maser sources, providing a unique opportunity to test the proposed role of Class I masers as evolutionary indicators for massive star formation. The millimeter observations reveal bipolar molecular outflows, traced by 13CO(2-1) emission, associated with all three Class I maser sources. Two of these sources (including …
Molecular maser lines are signposts of high-mass star formation, probing excitation and kinematics of very compact regions in the close environment of young stellar objects and providing useful targets for trigonometric parallax measurements. Only a few NH$_{3}$ (9,6) masers were known so far, and their origin is still poorly understood. Here we aim to find new NH$_{3}$ (9,6) masers to provide a better observational basis to study their role in high-mass star-forming regions. We carried out NH$_{3}$ (9,6) observations toward Cepheus A and G34.26$+$0.15 with the Effelsberg-100 m telescope and t…
The Red MSX Source (RMS) survey has identified a sample of ~1200 massive young stellar objects (MYSOs), compact and ultra compact HII regions from a sample of ~2000 MSX and 2MASS colour selected sources. We have used the 100 m Green Bank telescope to search for 22-24 GHz water maser and ammonia (1,1), (2,2) and (3,3) emission towards ~600 RMS sources located within the northern Galactic plane. We have identified 308 H2O masers which corresponds to an overall detection rate of ~50%. Abridged: We detect ammonia emission towards 479 of these massive young stars, which corresponds to ~80%. Ammonia…
We present wide area radio (12 mm) Mopra Telescope observations of the complex and rich massive star forming region G305. Our goals are to determine the reservoir for star formation within G305 using NH3 to trace the dense molecular content, and thus, the gas available to form stars; estimate physical parameters of detected NH3 clumps (temperature, column density, mass etc); locate current areas of active star formation via the presence of H2O and methanol masers and the distribution of YSOs and ultra compact HII regions associated with this region. This paper details the NH3 (J,K), (1,1), (2,…
We carried out a cyanopolyyne line survey towards a large sample of HMSFRs using the Shanghai Tian Ma 65m Radio Telescope (TMRT). Our sample consisted of 123 targets taken from the TMRT C band line survey. It included three kinds of sources, namely those with detection of the 6.7 GHz CH3OH maser alone, with detection of the radio recombination line (RRL) alone, and with detection of both (hereafter referred to as Maser-only, RRL-only, and Maser-RRL sources, respectively). We detected HC3N in 38 sources, HC5N in 11 sources, and HC7N in G24.790+0.084, with the highest detection rate being found …
We report the detection of a new radio recombination line (RRL) maser object toward the IRS2 source in the MonR2 ultracompact HII region. The continuum emission at 1.3mm and 0.85mm and the H30a and H26a lines were observed with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) at angular resolutions of about 0.5"-3". The SMA observations show that the MonR2-IRS2 source is very compact and remains unresolved at spatial scales <=400AU. Its continuum power spectrum at millimeter wavelengths is almost flat (alpha=-0.16, with S_nu proportional to nu^alpha), indicating that this source is dominated by optically thin fr…
We present new observations of C-band continuum emission and masers to assess high-mass ($>$8 $M_\odot$) star formation at early evolutionary phases in the inner 200 pc of the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Galaxy. The continuum observation is complete to free-free emission from stars above 10-11 $M_\odot$ in 91% of the covered area. We identify 104 compact sources in the continuum emission, among which five are confirmed ultracompact H II regions, 12 are candidates of ultra-compact H II regions, and the remaining 87 sources are mostly massive stars in clusters, field stars, evolved stars…
We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to search for emission from the $4_{-1} \rightarrow 3_{0}E$ transition of methanol (36.2 GHz) towards the center of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC253. Two regions of emission were detected, offset from the nucleus along the same position angle as the inner spiral arms. The emission is largely unresolved on a scale of 5 arcsec, has a full-width half maximum (FWHM) line width of < 30 km s$^{-1}$, and an isotropic luminosity orders of magnitude larger than that observed in any Galactic star formation regions. These characteristics suggest…
The direct collapse black hole (DCBH) scenario describes the isothermal collapse of a pristine gas cloud directly into a massive, M_BH=10^4-10^6 M_sun black hole. In this paper we show that large HI column densities of primordial gas at T~10^4 K with low molecular abundance - which represent key aspects of the DCBH scenario - provide optimal conditions for pumping of the 2p-level of atomic hydrogen by trapped Lyman alpha (Lya) photons. This Lya pumping mechanism gives rise to inverted level population of the 2s_1/2-2p_3/2 transition, and therefore to stimulated fine structure emission at 3.04 …
We present 247-GHz molecular line observations of methanol (CH$_3$OH) toward sixteen massive star-forming regions, using the APEX telescope with an angular resolution of $25''$. The sample covers a range of evolutionary states, including warm molecular cores, hot molecular cores, and ultracompact HII regions. The hot cores, all of which include UC HII regions, show rich molecular line spectra, although the strength of different species and transitions varies from source to source. In contrast, the warm cores do not show significant molecular line emission. Multiple methanol transitions are det…
We have detected emission from both the 4_{-1}-3_{0} E (36.2~GHz) class I and 7_{-2}-8_{-1} E (37.7~GHz) class II methanol transitions towards the centre of the closest ultra-luminous infrared galaxy Arp 220. The emission in both the methanol transitions show narrow spectral features and have luminosities approximately 8 orders of magnitude stronger than that observed from typical class I methanol masers observed in Galactic star formation regions. The emission is also orders of magnitude stronger than the expected intensity of thermal emission from these transitions and based on these finding…
We present results of continuum and spectral line observations with ALMA and 22 GHz water (H$_2$O) maser observations using KaVA and VERA toward a high-mass star-forming region, G25.82-0.17. Multiple 1.3 mm continuum sources are revealed, indicating the presence of young stellar objects (YSOs) at different evolutionary stages, namely an ultra-compact HII region, G25.82-E, a high-mass young stellar object (HM-YSO), G25.82-W1, and starless cores, G25.82-W2 and G25.82-W3. Two SiO outflows, at N-S and SE-NW orientations, are identified. The CH$_3$OH 8$_{-1}$-7$_{0}$ E line, known to be a class I C…
We report multi-frequency Very Large Array observations of three massive star formation regions (MSFRs) containing radio continuum components that were identified as broad radio recombination line (RRL) sources and hypercompact (HC) H II region candidates in our previous H92alpha and H76alpha study: G10.96+0.01 (component W), G28.20-0.04 (N), and G34.26+0.15 (B). An additional HC H II region candidate, G45.07+0.13, known to have broad H66alpha and H76alpha lines, small size, high electron density and emission measure, was also included. We observed with high spatial resolution (0.9" to 2.3") t…
We present wide-area radio continuum 5.5 and 8.8 GHz (5.5 and 3.4 cm) Australia Telescope Compact Array observations of the complex and rich massive star-forming region G305. The aim of this study is to perform an un-targeted survey of the region in search of the compact radio emission associated with ultra-compact (UC) HII regions. Observations presented here encompass the entire complex and have a maximum resolution of ~1.5x1.4" and sensitivity of ~0.07 mJy beam^-1. By applying a data reduction method that emphasises small-scale structure, we are able to detect 71 compact radio sources distr…
We present a complete sample of molecular clumps containing compact and ultra-compact (UC) HII regions between \ell=10\degr and 60\degr\ and $|b|<1\degr, identified by combining the the ATLASGAL submm and CORNISH radio continuum surveys with visual examination of archival infrared data. Our sample is complete to optically thin, compact and UCHII regions driven by a zero age main sequence star of spectral type B0 or earlier embedded within a 1,000 Msun clump. In total we identify 213 compact and UCHII regions, associated with 170 clumps. Unambiguous kinematic distances are derived for these clu…
We present sub-arcsecond observations toward the massive star forming region G75.78+0.34. We used the Very Large Array to study the centimeter continuum and H2O and CH3OH maser emission, and the Owens Valley Radio Observatory and Submillimeter Array to study the millimeter continuum and recombination lines (H40alpha and H30alpha). We found radio continuum emission at all wavelengths, coming from three components: (1) a cometary ultracompact (UC) HII region with an electron density 3.7x10^4 cm^{-3}, excited by a B0 type star, and with no associated dust emission; (2) an almost unresolved UCHII …
We conducted observations of multiple HC3N (J = 10-9, 12-11, and 16-15) lines and the N2H+ (J = 1-0) line toward a large sample of 61 ultracompact (UC) H II regions, through the Institutde Radioastronomie Millmetrique 30 m and the Arizona Radio Observatory 12 m telescopes. The N2H+ J = 1-0 line is detected in 60 sources and HC3N is detected in 59 sources, including 40 sources with three lines, 9 sources with two lines, and 10 sources with one line. Using the rotational diagram, the rotational temperature and column density of HC3N were estimated toward sources with at least two HC3N lines. For…
The Karl Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO), Atacama Large Millimetric Array (ALMA), and the infrared \textit{Spitzer} observatories, are powerful facilities to study massive star formation regions and related objects such as ultra--compact (UC) \hii regions, molecular clumps, and cores. We used these telescopes to study the \uchiir G43.89--0.78. The morphological study at arcminute scales using NVSS and \textit{Spitzer} data shows that this region is similar to those observed in the \textit{ bubble--like} structures revealed by \textit{Spitzer} observations. …
We present infrared observations of the ultra-compact H II region W3(OH) made by the FORCAST instrument aboard SOFIA and by Spitzer/IRAC. We contribute new wavelength data to the spectral energy distribution, which constrains the optical depth, grain size distribution, and temperature gradient of the dusty shell surrounding the H II region. We model the dust component as a spherical shell containing an inner cavity with radius ~ 600 AU, irradiated by a central star of type O9 and temperature ~ 31,000 K. The total luminosity of this system is 71,000 L_solar. An observed excess of 2.2 - 4.5 micr…
