Periodic measures are the time-periodic counterpart to invariant measures for dynamical systems and can be used to characterise the long-term periodic behaviour of stochastic systems. This paper gives sufficient conditions for the existence, uniqueness and geometric convergence of a periodic measure for time-periodic Markovian processes on a locally compact metric space in great generality. In particular, we apply these results in the context of time-periodic weakly dissipative stochastic differential equations, gradient stochastic differential equations as well as Langevin equations. We will establish the Fokker-Planck equation that the density of the periodic measure sufficiently and necessarily satisfies. Applications to physical problems shall be discussed with specific examples.
This paper contains two parts. In the first part, we study the ergodicity of periodic measures of random dynamical systems on a separable Banach space. We obtain that the periodic measure of the continuous time skew-product dynamical system generated by a random periodic path is ergodic if and only if the underlying noise metric dynamical system at discrete time of integral multiples of the period is ergodic. For the Markov random dynamical system case, we prove that the periodic measure of a Markov semigroup is PS-ergodic if and only if the trace of the random periodic path at integral multip…
Ergodicity of random dynamical systems with a periodic measure is obtained on a Polish space. In the Markovian case, the idea of Poincaré sections is introduced. It is proved that if the periodic measure is PS-ergodic, then it is ergodic. Moreover, if the infinitesimal generator of the Markov semigroup only has equally placed simple eigenvalues including $0$ on the imaginary axis, then the periodic measure is PS-ergodic and has positive minimum period. Conversely if the periodic measure with the positive minimum period is PS-mixing, then the infinitesimal generator only has equally placed simp…
In this paper, we establish some sufficient conditions for the existence of stable random periodic solutions of stochastic differential equations and ergodicity in the random periodic regime. The techniques involve the existence of Lyapunov type function, using two-point generator of the stochastic flow map, strong Feller argument and weak convergence.
We consider a time inhomogeneous strong Markov process $(ξ_t)_{t\ge 0}$ taking values in a Polish state space whose semigroup has a $T$-periodic structure. We give simple conditions which imply ergodicity of the grid chain $(ξ_{kT})_{k\in \mathbb{N}_0}$ In case of $d$-dimensional possibly degenerate diffusions, the conditions are stated in terms of drift and diffusion coefficient of the process.
This paper deals with ergodic theorems for particular time-inhomogeneous Markov processes, whose the time-inhomogeneity is asymptotically periodic. Under a Lyapunov/minorization condition, it is shown that, for any measurable bounded function $f$, the time average $\frac{1}{t} \int_0^t f(X_s)ds$ converges in $\mathbb{L}^2$ towards a limiting distribution, starting from any initial distribution for the process $(X_t)_{t \geq 0}$. This convergence can be improved to an almost sure convergence under an additional assumption on the initial measure. This result will be then applied to show the exis…
We provide an example of a discrete-time Markov process on the three-dimensional infinite integer lattice with Z_q-invariant Bernoulli-increments which has as local state space the cyclic group Z_q. We show that the system has a unique invariant measure, but remarkably possesses an invariant set of measures on which the dynamics is conjugate to an irrational rotation on the continuous sphere S^1. The update mechanism we construct is exponentially well localized on the lattice.
In this paper we consider multivariate time series obtained as solution to multidimensional nonlinear stochastic difference equations whose coefficients are allowed to be locally degenerate and to present discontinuities. We provide simple and easy to check sufficient conditions for the irreducibility, T-chain regularity and geometric ergodicity of these processes and apply the results to the BEKK-ARCH(1) models with a nonlinear autoregressive term.
We employ an extension of ergodic theory to the random setting to investigate the existence of random periodic solutions of random dynamical systems. Given that a random dynamical system has a dissipative structure, we proved that a random invariant compact set can be expressed as a union of finite of number of random periodic curves. The idea in this paper is closely related to the work recently considered by Zhao and Zheng [46].
Max-stable processes are central models for spatial extremes. In this paper, we focus on some space-time max-stable models introduced in Embrechts et al. (2016). The processes considered induce discrete-time Markov chains taking values in the space of continuous functions from the unit sphere of $\mathbb{R}^3$ to $(0, \infty)$. We show that these Markov chains are geometrically ergodic. An interesting feature lies in the fact that the state space is not locally compact, making the classical methodology inapplicable. Instead, we use the fact that the state space is Polish and apply results pres…
Conditions for the existence of strictly stationary multivariate GARCH processes in the so-called BEKK parametrisation, which is the most general form of multivariate GARCH processes typically used in applications, and for their geometric ergodicity are obtained. The conditions are that the driving noise is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure and zero is in the interior of its support and that a certain matrix built from the GARCH coefficients has spectral radius smaller than one. To establish the results semi-polynomial Markov chains are defined and analysed using algeb…
We formulate simple criteria for positive Harris recurrence of strongly degenerate stochastic differential equations with smooth coefficients when the drift depends on time and space and is periodic in the time argument. There is no time dependence in the diffusion coefficient. Our criteria rely on control systems and the support theorem, existence of an attainable inner point of full weak Hoermander dimension and of some Lyapunov function. Positive Harris recurrence enables us to prove limit theorems for such diffusions. As an application, we consider a stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley model for a s…
Let $(X_n)_{n \in\mathbb{N}}$ be a $V$-geometrically ergodic Markov chain on a measurable space $\mathbb{X}$ with invariant probability distribution $π$. In this paper, we propose a discretization scheme providing a computable sequence $(\widehatπ_k)_{k\ge 1}$ of probability measures which approximates $π$ as $k$ growths to infinity. The probability measure $\widehatπ_k$ is computed from the invariant probability distribution of a finite Markov chain. The convergence rate in total variation of $(\widehatπ_k)_{k\ge 1}$ to $π$ is given. As a result, the specific case of first order autoregressiv…
We study random exponential sums of the form $\sum_{k=1}^nX_k\times\ex p\{i(λ_k^{(1)}t_1+...+λ_k^{(s)}t_s)\}$, where $\{X_n\}$ is a sequence of random variables and $\{λ_n^{(i)}:1\leq i\leq s\}$ are sequences of real numbers. We obtain uniform estimates (on compact sets) of such sums, for independent centered $\{X_n\}$ or bounded $\{X_n\}$ satisfying some mixing conditions. These results generalize recent results of Weber [Math. Inequal. Appl. 3 (2000) 443--457] and Fan and Schneider [Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré Probab. Statist. 39 (2003) 193--216] in several directions. As applications we derive c…
A class of nonlinear ARCH processes is introduced and studied. The existence of a strictly stationary and $β$-mixing solution is established under a mild assumption on the density of the underlying independent process. We give sufficient conditions for the existence of moments. The analysis relies on Markov chain theory. The model generalizes some important features of standard ARCH models and is amenable to further analysis.
In this paper we find nonasymptotic exponential upper bounds for the deviation in the ergodic theorem for families of homogeneous Markov processes. We find some sufficient conditions for geometric ergodicity uniformly over a parametric family. We apply this property to the nonasymptotic nonparametric estimation problem for ergodic diffusion processes.
Let $P$ be a Markov kernel on a measurable space $\X$ and let $V:\X\r[1,+\infty)$. This paper provides explicit connections between the $V$-geometric ergodicity of $P$ and that of finite-rank nonnegative sub-Markov kernels $\Pc_k$ approximating $P$. A special attention is paid to obtain an efficient way to specify the convergence rate for $P$ from that of $\Pc_k$ and conversely. Furthermore, explicit bounds are obtained for the total variation distance between the $P$-invariant probability measure and the $\Pc_k$-invariant positive measure. The proofs are based on the Keller-Liverani perturbat…
We consider a process on $\mathbb{T}^2$, which consists of fast motion along the stream lines of an incompressible periodic vector field perturbed by white noise. It gives rise to a process on the graph naturally associated to the structure of the stream lines of the unperturbed flow. It has been shown by Freidlin and Wentzell [Random Perturbations of Dynamical Systems, 2nd ed. Springer, New York (1998)] and [Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 109 (1994)] that if the stream function of the flow is periodic, then the corresponding process on the graph weakly converges to a Markov process. We consider the si…
Consider a periodic, mean-reverting Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process $X=\{X_t,t\geq0\}$ of the form $d X_{t}=\left(L(t)+αX_{t}\right) d t+ dB^H_{t}, \quad t \geq 0$, where $L(t)=\sum_{i=1}^{p}μ_iϕ_i (t)$ is a periodic parametric function, and $\{B^H_t,t\geq0\}$ is a fractional Brownian motion of Hurst parameter $\frac12\leq H<1$. In the "ergodic" case $α<0$, the parametric estimation of $(μ_1,\ldots,μ_p,α)$ based on continuous-time observation of $X$ has been considered in Dehling et al. \cite{DFK}, and in Dehling et al. \cite{DFW} for $H=\frac12$, and $\frac12<H<1$, respectively. In this paper we c…
In the paper we consider the problem of estimating parameters entering the drift of a fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type process in the non-ergodic case, when the underlying stochastic integral is of Young type. We consider the sampling scheme that the process is observed continuously on $[0,T]$ and $T\to\infty$. For known Hurst parameter $H\in(0.5, 1)$, i.e. the long range dependent case, we construct a least-squares type estimator and establish strong consistency. Furthermore, we prove a second order limit theorem which provides asymptotic normality for the parameters of the periodic functio…
In this paper, we consider numerical approximation to periodic measure of a time periodic stochastic differential equations (SDEs) under weakly dissipative condition. For this we first study the existence of the periodic measure $ρ_t$ and the large time behaviour of $\mathcal{U}(t+s,s,x) := \mathbb{E}ϕ(X_{t}^{s,x})-\intϕdρ_t,$ where $X_t^{s,x}$ is the solution of the SDEs and $ϕ$ is a test function being smooth and of polynomial growth at infinity. We prove $\mathcal{U}$ and all its spatial derivatives decay to 0 with exponential rate on time $t$ in the sense of average on initial time $s$. We…
We analyze the large time behavior of a stochastic model for the lay-down of fibers on a conveyor belt in the production process of nonwovens. It is shown, that under weak conditions this degenerate diffusion process is strong mixing, confirming a conjecture of Grothaus and Klar. Moreover, under some additional assumptions even geometric ergodicity is established using probabilistic tools -- described in the book of Meyn and Tweedie -- in combination with methods from stochastic analysis.
We establish the existence and uniqueness of an ergodic invariant measure for 2D fractionally dissipated stochastic Euler equations on the periodic box, for any power of the dissipation term.
In this paper, we prove the existence of a unique strong solution to a stochastic tamed 3D Navier-Stokes equation in the whole space as well as in the periodic boundary case. Then, we also study the Feller property of solutions, and prove the existence of invariant measures for the corresponding Feller semigroup in the case of periodic conditions. Moreover, in the case of periodic boundary and degenerated additive noise, using the notion of asymptotic strong Feller property proposed by Hairer and Mattingly \cite{Ha-Ma}, we prove the uniqueness of invariant measures for the corresponding transi…
In this paper we establish the ergodicity of Langevin dynamics for simple two-particle system involving a Lennard-Jones type potential. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such result for a system operating under this type of potential. Moreover we show that the dynamics are {\it geometrically} ergodic (have a spectral gap) and converge at a geometric rate. Methods from stochastic averaging are used to establish the existence of a Lyapunov function. The existence of a Lyapunov function in this setting seems resistant to more traditional approaches. This is a corrected version of th…
This paper is concerned with the long time behavior of Langevin dynamics of {\em Coulomb gases} in $\mathbf{R}^d$ with $d\geq 2$, that is a second order system of Brownian particles driven by an external force and a pairwise repulsive Coulomb force. We prove that the system converges exponentially to the unique Boltzmann-Gibbs invariant measure under a weighted total variation distance. The proof relies on a novel construction of Lyapunov function for the Coulomb system.
A probabilistic approach of computing geometric rate of convergence of stochastic processes is introduced in this paper. The goal is to quantitatively compute both upper and lower bounds of the exponential rate of convergence to the invariant probability measure of a stochastic process. By applying the coupling method, we derive an algorithm which does not need to discretize the state space. In this way, our approach works well for many high-dimensional examples. We apply this algorithm to both random perturbed iterative mappings and stochastic differential equations. We show that the rate of …
We consider a simple model for the fluctuating hydrodynamics of a flexible polymer in dilute solution, demonstrating geometric ergodicity for a pair of particles that interact with each other through a nonlinear spring potential while being advected by a stochastic Stokes fluid velocity field. This is a generalization of previous models which have used linear spring forces as well as white-in-time fluid velocity fields. We follow previous work combining control theoretic arguments, Lyapunov functions, and hypo-elliptic diffusion theory to prove exponential convergence via a Harris chain argume…
