Deep image completion usually fails to harmonically blend the restored image into existing content, especially in the boundary area. This paper handles with this problem from a new perspective of creating a smooth transition and proposes a concise Deep Fusion Network (DFNet). Firstly, a fusion block is introduced to generate a flexible alpha composition map for combining known and unknown regions. The fusion block not only provides a smooth fusion between restored and existing content, but also provides an attention map to make network focus more on the unknown pixels. In this way, it builds a bridge for structural and texture information, so that information can be naturally propagated from known region into completion. Furthermore, fusion blocks are embedded into several decoder layers of the network. Accompanied by the adjustable loss constraints on each layer, more accurate structure information are achieved. We qualitatively and quantitatively compare our method with other state-of-the-art methods on Places2 and CelebA datasets. The results show the superior performance of DFNet, especially in the aspects of harmonious texture transition, texture detail and semantic structural consistency. This paper tackles the problem of data fusion in the semantic scene completion (SSC) task, which can simultaneously deal with semantic labeling and scene completion. RGB images contain texture details of the object(s) which are vital for semantic scene understanding. Meanwhile, depth images capture geometric clues of high relevance for shape completion. Using both RGB and depth images can further boost the accuracy of SSC over employing one modality in isolation. We propose a 3D gated recurrent fusion network (GRFNet), which learns to adaptively select and fuse the relevant information from de…

This paper presents an end-to-end 3D convolutional network named attention-based multi-modal fusion network (AMFNet) for the semantic scene completion (SSC) task of inferring the occupancy and semantic labels of a volumetric 3D scene from single-view RGB-D images. Compared with previous methods which use only the semantic features extracted from RGB-D images, the proposed AMFNet learns to perform effective 3D scene completion and semantic segmentation simultaneously via leveraging the experience of inferring 2D semantic segmentation from RGB-D images as well as the reliable depth cues in spati…

Semantic scene completion (SSC) aims to complete a partial 3D scene and predict its semantics simultaneously. Most existing works adopt the voxel representations, thus suffering from the growth of memory and computation cost as the voxel resolution increases. Though a few works attempt to solve SSC from the perspective of 3D point clouds, they have not fully exploited the correlation and complementarity between the two tasks of scene completion and semantic segmentation. In our work, we present CasFusionNet, a novel cascaded network for point cloud semantic scene completion by dense feature fu…

Depth completion aims to recover a dense depth map from a sparse depth map with the corresponding color image as input. Recent approaches mainly formulate depth completion as a one-stage end-to-end learning task, which outputs dense depth maps directly. However, the feature extraction and supervision in one-stage frameworks are insufficient, limiting the performance of these approaches. To address this problem, we propose a novel end-to-end residual learning framework, which formulates the depth completion as a two-stage learning task, i.e., a sparse-to-coarse stage and a coarse-to-fine stage.…
In this paper we propose a convolutional neural network that is designed to upsample a series of sparse range measurements based on the contextual cues gleaned from a high resolution intensity image. Our approach draws inspiration from related work on super-resolution and in-painting. We propose a novel architecture that seeks to pull contextual cues separately from the intensity image and the depth features and then fuse them later in the network. We argue that this approach effectively exploits the relationship between the two modalities and produces accurate results while respecting salient…

Modern high-definition LIDAR is expensive for commercial autonomous driving vehicles and small indoor robots. An affordable solution to this problem is fusion of planar LIDAR with RGB images to provide a similar level of perception capability. Even though state-of-the-art methods provide approaches to predict depth information from limited sensor input, they are usually a simple concatenation of sparse LIDAR features and dense RGB features through an end-to-end fusion architecture. In this paper, we introduce an inductive late-fusion block which better fuses different sensor modalities inspire…

The raw depth image captured by the indoor depth sensor usually has an extensive range of missing depth values due to inherent limitations such as the inability to perceive transparent objects and limited distance range. The incomplete depth map burdens many downstream vision tasks, and a rising number of depth completion methods have been proposed to alleviate this issue. While most existing methods can generate accurate dense depth maps from sparse and uniformly sampled depth maps, they are not suitable for complementing the large contiguous regions of missing depth values, which is common a…

In this paper, we propose enhancing monocular depth estimation by adding 3D points as depth guidance. Unlike existing depth completion methods, our approach performs well on extremely sparse and unevenly distributed point clouds, which makes it agnostic to the source of the 3D points. We achieve this by introducing a novel multi-scale 3D point fusion network that is both lightweight and efficient. We demonstrate its versatility on two different depth estimation problems where the 3D points have been acquired with conventional structure-from-motion and LiDAR. In both cases, our network performs…

In this paper we consider the problem of estimating a dense depth map from a set of sparse LiDAR points. We use techniques from compressed sensing and the recently developed Alternating Direction Neural Networks (ADNNs) to create a deep recurrent auto-encoder for this task. Our architecture internally performs an algorithm for extracting multi-level convolutional sparse codes from the input which are then used to make a prediction. Our results demonstrate that with only two layers and 1800 parameters we are able to out perform all previously published results, including deep networks with orde…
In this paper we consider the task of image-guided depth completion where our system must infer the depth at every pixel of an input image based on the image content and a sparse set of depth measurements. We propose a novel approach that builds upon the strengths of modern deep learning techniques and classical optimization algorithms and significantly improves performance. The proposed method replaces the final $1\times 1$ convolutional layer employed in most depth completion networks with a least squares fitting module which computes weights by fitting the implicit depth bases to the given …

In this work, we present a framework that completes disconnected contours and connects fragmented lines and curves. In our framework, we propose a model that does not even need to know which regions of the contour are eliminated. We introduce an iterative process that completes an incomplete image and we propose novel measures that guide this to f…

CFCNet learns to capture, to the largest extent, the semantically correlated features between RGB and depth information. Through pairs of image pixels and the visible measurements in a sparse depth map, CFCNet facilitates feature-level mutual transformation of different data sources. Such a transformation enables CFCNet to predict features and reconstruct data of missing depth measurements according t…

Dense depth perception is critical for autonomous driving and other robotics applications. However, modern LiDAR sensors only provide sparse depth measurement. It is thus necessary to complete the sparse LiDAR data, where a synchronized guidance RGB image is often used to facilitate this completion. Many neural networks have been designed for this task. However, they often na\"ıvely fuse the LiDAR data and RGB image information by performing feature concatenation or element-wise addition. Inspired by the guided image filtering, we design a novel guided network to predict kernel weights from th…

Semantic scene completion is the task of predicting a complete 3D representation of volumetric occupancy with corresponding semantic labels for a scene from a single point of view. Previous works on Semantic Scene Completion from RGB-D data used either only depth or depth with colour by projecting the 2D image into the 3D volume resulting in a sparse data representation. In this work, we present a new strategy to encode colour information in 3D space using edge detection and flipped truncated signed distance. We also present EdgeNet, a new end-to-end neural network architecture capable of hand…

Deep convolutional networks (CNNs) have achieved great success in face completion to generate plausible facial structures. These methods, however, are limited in maintaining global consistency among face components and recovering fine facial details. On the other hand, reflectional symmetry is a prominent property of face image and benefits face recognition and consistency modeling, yet remaining uninvestigated in deep face completion. In this work, we leverage two kinds of symmetry-enforcing subnets to form a symmetry-consistent CNN model (i.e., SymmFCNet) for effective face completion. For m…
The goal of our work is to complete the depth channel of an RGB-D image. Commodity-grade depth cameras often fail to sense depth for shiny, bright, transparent, and distant surfaces. To address this problem, we train a deep network that takes an RGB image as input and predicts dense surface normals and occlusion boundaries. Those predictions are then combined with raw depth observations provided by the RGB-D camera to solve for depths for all pixels, including those missing in the original observation. This method was chosen over others (e.g., inpainting depths directly) as the result of exten…

By introducing a novel "Feedback Loop'' to connect the network input with output, LidarStereoNet could tackle both noisy Lidar points and misalignment between sensors that have been ignored in existing Lidar-stereo fusion studies. Besides, we propose to incorporate a piecewise planar model into network learning to further constrain depths to conform to the underlying 3D geometry. Extensive quantitative and qualit…

With the wide application of sparse ToF sensors in mobile devices, RGB image-guided sparse depth completion has attracted extensive attention recently, but still faces some problems. First, the fusion of multimodal information requires more network modules to process different modalities. But the application scenarios of sparse ToF measurements usually demand lightweight structure and low computational cost. Second, fusing sparse and noisy depth data with dense pixel-wise RGB data may introduce artifacts. In this paper, a light but efficient depth completion network is proposed, which consists…

We propose the onion-peel networks for video completion. Given a set of reference images and a target image with holes, our network fills the hole by referring the contents in the reference images. Our onion-peel network progressively fills the hole from the hole boundary enabling it to exploit richer contextual information for the missing regions every step. Given a sufficient number of recurrences, even a large hole can be inpainted successfully. To attend to the missing information visible in the reference images, we propose an asymmetric attention block that computes similarities between t…
Image completion has achieved significant progress due to advances in generative adversarial networks (GANs). Albeit natural-looking, the synthesized contents still lack details, especially for scenes with complex structures or images with large holes. This is because there exists a gap between low-level reconstruction loss and high-level adversarial loss. To address this issue, we introduce a perceptual network to provide mid-level guidance, which measures the semantical similarity between the synthesized and original contents in a similarity-enhanced space. We conduct a detailed analysis on …

Recent work has shown that the structure of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) induces a strong prior that favors natural images. This prior, known as a deep image prior (DIP), is an effective regularizer in inverse problems such as image denoising and inpainting. We extend the concept of the DIP to depth images. Given color images and noisy and incomplete target depth maps, we optimize a randomly-initialized CNN model to reconstruct a depth map restored by virtue of using the CNN network structure as a prior combined with a view-constrained photo-consistency loss. This loss is computed usin…
The success of multimodal data fusion in deep learning appears to be attributed to the use of complementary in-formation between multiple input data. Compared to their predictive performance, relatively less attention has been devoted to the robustness of multimodal fusion models. We applied gradient based white-box attacks such as FGSM and PGD on MFNet, which is a major multispectral (RGB, Thermal) fusion deep learning model for semantic seg…
We experimentally study the robustness of deep camera-LiDAR fusion architectures for 2D object detection in autonomous driving. However, we note that single-channel adversarial training of deep fusion is often detrimental even to robustness. Moreover, we observe cross-channel exte…

Automated surface inspection is an important task in many manufacturing industries and often requires machine learning driven solutions. In this work, we instead perform one-class unsupervised learning on fault-free samples by training a deep convolutional neural network to complete images whose center regions are cut out. Since the network is trained exclusively on fault-free data, it completes the image patches with a fault-free version of the missing image region…

This approach is designed to efficiently and automatically balance the trade-off between early and late fusion (i.e. between the fusion of low-level vs high-level information). More specifically, at each level of abstraction-the different levels of deep networks-uni-modal representations of the data are fed to a central neural network which combines them into a common embedding. In addition, a multi-objective regularization is also int…

A significant number of researchers have applied deep learning methods to image fusion. However, most works require a large amount of training data or depend on pre-trained models or frameworks to capture features from source images. This is inevitably hampered by a shortage of training data or a mismatch between the framework and the actual problem. Deep Image Prior (DIP) has been introduced to exploit convolutional neural networks' ability to synthesize the 'prior' in the input image. However, the original design of DIP is hard to be generalized to multi-image processing problems, particular…
