In this paper we present a novel algorithm to solve the robot kinematic structure identification problem. Given a time series of data, typically obtained processing a set of visual observations, the proposed approach identifies the ordered sequence of links associated to the kinematic chain, the joint type interconnecting each couple of consecutive links, and the input signal influencing the relative motion. Compared to the state of the art, the proposed algorithm has reduced computational costs, and is able to identify also the joints' type sequence.
Although the kinematics and dynamics of spherical robots (SRs) on flat horizontal and inclined 2D surfaces are thoroughly investigated, their rolling behavior on generic 3D terrains has remained unexplored. This paper derives the kinematics equations of the most common SRs configurations rolling over 3D surfaces. First, the kinematics equations for a geometrical sphere rolling over a 3D surface are derived along with the characterization of the modeling method. Next, a brief review of current SR mechanical configurations is presented as well as a novel classification for spherical robots based…
This paper discusses deriving geometric jacobians and identifying and analyzing the kinematic singularities for two 6 DOF arm robots. First we show the direct kinematics and D-H parameters derived for these two arms. The Geometric jacobian is computed for Barrett WAM and Smokie OUR. By analyzing the jacobian matrices we find the configurations at which J is rank deficient and derive the kinematic singularities through jacobian's determinent. Schematic are provided to show the singular configurations of both robots. Finally a survey is done on redundant kinematic allocation schemesfor 7 DoF Bar…

Mobile robots have been widely used in various aspects of human life. When a robot moves between different positions in the working area to perform the task, controlling motion to follow a pre-defined path is the primary task of a mobile robot. Furthermore, the robot must remain at its desired speed to cooperate with other agents. This paper presents a development of a motion controller, in which the fuzzy logic method is combined with a kinematic model of a differential drive robot. The simulation results are compared well with experimental results indicate that the method is effective and ap…
The compliance of soft robotic arms renders the development of accurate kinematic & dynamical models especially challenging. The most widely used model in soft robotic kinematics assumes Piecewise Constant Curvature (PCC). However, PCC fails to effectively handle external forces, or even the influence of gravity, since the robot does not deform with a constant curvature under these conditions. In this paper, we establish three-dimensional (3D) modeling of a multi-segment soft robotic arm under the less restrictive assumption that each segment of the arm is deformed on a plane without twisting.…
This paper discusses modelling two 6 DOF arm robots. The first step of modelling a robot is establishing its Denavit-Hartenberg parameters. It requires assigning proper coordinates for each link and finding their exact dimensions. In this project we will develop the direct kinematics and workspace representations for two manipulators: the Smokie Robot and the Barrett WAM. After finding the D-H parameters and creating Transformation Matrices,MATLAB programming is used to represent their workspaces.

In this paper, WALK-VIO, a novel visual-inertial odometry (VIO) with walking-motion-adaptive leg kinematic constraints that change with body motion for localization of quadruped robots, is proposed. Quadruped robots primarily use VIO because they require fast localization for control and path planning. However, since quadruped robots are mainly used outdoors, extraneous features extracted from the sky or ground cause tracking failures. In addition, the quadruped robots' walking motion cause wobbling, which lowers the localization accuracy due to the camera and inertial measurement unit (IMU). …
In this paper we investigate human-to-robot skill transfer based on the identification of prototypical task executions by clustering a set of examples performed by human demonstrators, where smoothness and kinematic features represent skill and task performance, respectively. We exemplify our skill transfer approach with data from an experimental task in which a tool touches a support surface with a target velocity. Prototypical task executions are identified and transferred to a generic robot arm in simulation. The results illustrate how task models based on skill and performance features can…
Industrial robots are increasingly used in various applications where the robot accuracy becomes very important, hence calibrations of the robot's kinematic parameters and the measurement system's extrinsic parameters are required. However, the existing calibration approaches are either too cumbersome or require another expensive external measurement system such as laser tracker or measurement spinarm. In this paper, we propose SCALAR, a calibration method to simultaneously improve the kinematic parameters of a 6-DoF robot and the extrinsic parameters of a 2D Laser Range Finder (LRF) which is …

A family of reconfigurable parallel robots can change motion modes by passing through constraint singularities by locking and releasing some passive joints of the robot. This paper is about the kinematics, the workspace and singularity analysis of a 3-PRPiR parallel robot involving lockable Pi and R (revolute) joints. Here a Pi joint may act as a 1-DOF planar parallelogram if its lock-able P (prismatic) joint is locked or a 2-DOF RR serial chain if its lockable P joint is released. The operation modes of the robot include a 3T operation modes to three 2T1R operation modes with two different di…

Voxel-based structures provide a modular, mechanically flexible periodic lattice which can be used as a soft robot through internal deformations. To engage these structures for robotic tasks, we use a finite element method to characterize the motion caused by deforming single degrees of freedom and develop a reduced kinematic model. We find that node translations propagate periodically along geometric planes within the lattice, and briefly show that translational modes dominate the energy usage of the actuators. The resulting kinematic model frames the structural deformations in terms of user-…

In this paper, the kinematic structure of the geared robotic mechanism (GRM) is investigated with the aid of two different methods which are based on directed graphs and the methods are compared. One of the methods is Matroid Method developed by Talpasanu and the other method is Tsai-Tokad (T-T) Graph method developed by Uyguroglu and Demirel. It is shown that the kinematic structure of the geared robotic mechanism can be represented by directed graphs and angular velocity equations of the mechanisms can be systematically obtained from the graphs. The advantages and disadvantages of both metho…

Real time calculation of inverse kinematics (IK) with dynamically stable configuration is of high necessity in humanoid robots as they are highly susceptible to lose balance. This paper proposes a methodology to generate joint-space trajectories of stable configurations for solving inverse kinematics using Deep Reinforcement Learning (RL). Our approach is based on the idea of exploring the entire configuration space of the robot and learning the best possible solutions using Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG). The proposed strategy was evaluated on the highly articulated upper body of a…

The manuscript discusses still preliminary considerations with regard to the dynamics and kinematics of an egg shaped robot with an gyro driven inertia actuator. The method of calculation follows the idea that we would like to express the entire dynamic equations in terms of moments instead of forces. Also we avoid to derive the equations from a Lagrange function with constraints. The result of the calculations is meant to be applicable to two robot prototypes that have been build at the AES\&R Laboratory at the National Chung Cheng University in Taiwan.

This paper presents a methodology that forms an automated tool for robot kinematic representation conversion, called the RobKin Interpreter. It is a set of analytical algorithms that apply basic linear algebra tools that can analyze an input serial robot representation, express the joints globally in matrix form, and map to other representations such as standard Denavit-Hartenberg parameters, Roll-Pitch-Yaw angles with translational displacement, and Product of Exponentials with a possibility to generate a URDF (Universal Robot Description Format) file from any of them. It works for revolute a…

Accurate kinematic models are essential for effective control of surgical robots. For tendon driven robots, which is common for minimally invasive surgery, intrinsic nonlinearities are important to consider. Traditional analytical methods allow to build the kinematic model of the system by making certain assumptions and simplifications on the nonlinearities. Machine learning techniques, instead, allow to recover a more complex model based on the acquired data. However, analytical models are more generalisable, but can be over-simplified; data-driven models, on the other hand, can cater for mor…

State-of-the-art robotic perception systems have achieved sufficiently good performance using Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs), cameras, and nonlinear optimization techniques, that they are now being deployed as technologies. However, many of these methods rely significantly on vision and often fail when visual tracking is lost due to lighting or scarcity of features. This paper presents a state-estimation technique for legged robots that takes into account the robot's kinematic model as well as its contact with the environment. We introduce forward kinematic factors and preintegrated contact…

Soft robots offer an alternative approach to manipulate inside the constrained space while maintaining the safe interaction with the external environment. Due to its adaptable compliance characteristic, external contact force can easily deform the robot shapes and lead to undesired robot kinematic and dynamic properties. Accurate contact detection and contact position estimation are of critical importance for soft robot modeling, control, trajectory planning, and eventually affect the success of task completion. In this paper, we focus on the study of 1-DoF soft pneumatic bellow bending actuat…
Re-configurable modular robotic (RMR) systems are advantageous for their reconfigurability and versatility. A new modular robot can be built for a specific task by using modules as building blocks. However, constructing a kinematic model for a newly conceived robot requires significant work. Due to the finite size of module-types, models of all module-types can be built individually and stored in a database beforehand. With this priori knowledge, the model construction process can be automated by detecting the modules and their corresponding interconnections. Previous literature proposed theor…

This paper presents an efficient learning-based method to solve the inverse kinematic (IK) problem on soft robots with highly non-linear deformation. The major challenge of efficiently computing IK for such robots is due to the lack of analytical formulation for either forward or inverse kinematics. To address this challenge, we employ neural networks to learn both the mapping function of forward kinematics and also the Jacobian of this function. As a result, Jacobian-based iteration can be applied to solve the IK problem. A sim-to-real training transfer strategy is conducted to make this appr…
Model-based control usually relies on an accurate model, which is often obtained from CAD and actuator models. The more accurate the model the better the control performance. However, in bipedal robots that demonstrate high agility actions, such as running and hopping, the robot hardware will suffer from impacts with the environment and deform in vulnerable parts, which invalidates the predefined model. Thus, it is desired to have an adaptable kinematic structure that takes deformation into consideration. To account for this we propose an approach that models all of the robotic joints as 6-DOF…
A polynomial solution to the inverse kinematic problem of the Kinova Gen3 Lite robot is proposed in this paper. This serial robot is based on a 6R kinematic chain and is not wrist-partitioned. We first start from the forward kinematics equation providing the position and orientation of the end-effector, finally, the univariate polynomial equation is given as a function of the first joint variable $θ_{1}$. The remaining joint variables are computed by back substitution. Thus, an unique set of joint position is obtain for each root of the univariate equation. Numerical examples, simulated in ROS…

This paper presents the kinematic analysis of the 3-PPPS parallel robot with an equilateral mobile platform and a U-shape base. The proposed design and appropriate selection of parameters allow to formulate simpler direct and inverse kinematics for the manipulator under study. The parallel singularities associated with the manipulator depend only on the orientation of the end-effector, and thus depend only on the orientation of the end effector. The quaternion parameters are used to represent the aspects, i.e. the singularity free regions of the workspace. A cylindrical algebraic decomposition…

We present an analytical solution for the inverse kinematics (IK) of a robotic arm with one prismatic joint and four revolute joints. This 5-DoF design is a result of minimizing weight while preserving functionality of the device in a wearable usage context. Generally, the IK problem for a 5-DoF robot does not guarantee solutions due to the system being over-constrained. We obtain an analytical solution by applying geometric projections and limiting the ranges of motion for each DoF. We validate this solution by reconstructing randomly sampled end-effector poses, and find position errors below…

Future NASA lander missions to icy moons will require completely automated, accurate, and data efficient calibration methods for the robot manipulator arms that sample icy terrains in the lander's vicinity. To support this need, this paper presents a Gaussian Process (GP) approach to the classical manipulator kinematic calibration process. Instead of identifying a corrected set of Denavit-Hartenberg kinematic parameters, a set of GPs models the residual kinematic error of the arm over the workspace. More importantly, this modeling framework allows a Gaussian Process Upper Confident Bound (GP-U…

Most of the existing formation algorithms for multiagent systems are fully label-specified, i.e., the desired position for each agent in the formation is uniquely determined by its label, which would inevitably make the formation algorithms vulnerable to agent failures. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a dynamic leader-follower approach to solving the line marching problem for a swarm of planar kinematic robots. In contrast to the existing results, the desired positions for the robots in the line are not fully label-specified, but determined in a dynamic way according to the cu…

Recent datasets enable progress for classifying data into known object categories; however, it is unclear how to collect reliable object data when operating in cluttered, partially-observable environments. In this paper, we address the problem of building complete 3D models for real-world objects using a robot platform, which can remove objects from clutter for better classification. Furthermore, we are able to learn entirely new object categories as they are encountered, enabling the robot to classi…

Aerospace production volumes have increased over time and robotic solutions have been progressively introduced in the aeronautic assembly lines to achieve high-quality standards, high production rates, flexibility and cost reduction. Robotic workcells are sometimes characterized by robots mounted on slides to increase the robot workspace. The slide introduces an additional degree of freedom, making the system kinematically redundant, but this feature is rarely used to enhance performances. The paper proposes a new concept in trajectory planning, that exploits the redundancy to satisfy addition…

To build commercial robots, skid-steering mechanical design is of increased popularity due to its manufacturing simplicity and unique mechanism. However, these also cause significant challenges on software and algorithm design, especially for the pose estimation (i.e., determining the robot's rotation and position) of skid-steering robots, since they change their orientation with an inevitable skid. To tackle this problem, we propose a probabilistic sliding-window estimator dedicated to skid-steering robots, using measurements from a monocular camera, the wheel encoders, and optionally an iner…

Legged robot locomotion is a challenging task due to a myriad of sub-problems, such as the hybrid dynamics of foot contact and the effects of the desired gait on the terrain. Accurate and efficient state estimation of the floating base and the feet joints can help alleviate much of these issues by providing feedback information to robot controllers. Current state estimation methods are highly reliant on a conjunction of visual and inertial measurements to provide real-time estimates, thus being handicapped in perceptually poor environments. In this work, we show that by leveraging the kinemati…
