We present an analytical solution for the inverse kinematics (IK) of a robotic arm with one prismatic joint and four revolute joints. This 5-DoF design is a result of minimizing weight while preserving functionality of the device in a wearable usage context. Generally, the IK problem for a 5-DoF robot does not guarantee solutions due to the system being over-constrained. We obtain an analytical solution by applying geometric projections and limiting the ranges of motion for each DoF. We validate this solution by reconstructing randomly sampled end-effector poses, and find position errors below 2 cm and orientation errors below 4 degrees.
Inverse Kinematics (IK) solves the problem of mapping from the Cartesian space to the joint configuration space of a robotic arm. It has a wide range of applications in areas such as computer graphics, protein structure prediction, and robotics. With the vast advances of artificial neural networks (NNs), many researchers recently turned to data-driven approaches to solving the IK problem. Unfortunately, NNs become inadequate for robotic arms with redundant Degrees-of-Freedom (DoFs). This is because such arms may have multiple angle solutions to reach the same desired pose, while typical NNs on…

The design of a novel prismatic drive is reported in this paper. This transmission is based on Slide-O-Cam, a cam mechanism with multiple rollers mounted on a common translating follower. The design of Slide-O-Cam was reported elsewhere. This drive thus provides pure-rolling motion, thereby reducing the friction of rack-and-pinions and linear drives. Such properties can be used to design new transmissions for parallel-kinematics machines. In this paper, this transmission is optimized to replace ball-screws in Orthoglide, a three-DOF parallel robot optimized for machining applications.

We aim to develop an efficient programming method for equipping service robots with the skill of performing sign language motions. This paper addresses the problem of transferring complex dual-arm sign language motions characterized by the coordination among arms and hands from human to robot, which is seldom considered in previous studies of motion retargeting techniques. In this paper, we propose a novel motion retargeting method that leverages graph optimization and Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMPs) for this problem. We employ DMPs in a leader-follower manner to parameterize the original t…
Automation applications are pushing the deployment of many high DoF manipulators in warehouse and manufacturing environments. This has motivated many efforts on optimizing manipulation tasks involving a single arm. Coordinating multiple arms for manipulation, however, introduces additional computational challenges arising from the increased DoFs, as well as the combinatorial increase in the available operations that many manipulators can perform, including handoffs between arms. The focus here is on the case of pick-and-place tasks, which require a sequence of handoffs to be executed, so as to…
This paper uses Model Predictive Control (MPC) to optimise the input torques of a Three-Degrees-of-Freedom (DOF) robotic arm, enabling it to operate to the target position and grasp the object accurately. A monocular camera is firstly used to recognise the colour and depth of the object. Then, the inverse kinematics calculation and the spatial coordinates of the object through coordinate transformation are combined to get the required rotating angle of each servo. Finally, the dynamic model of the robotic arm structure is derived and the model predictive control is applied to simulate the opti…
We present a novel approach to perform probabilistic collision detection between a high-DOF robot and high-DOF obstacles in dynamic, uncertain environments. In dynamic environments with a high-DOF robot and moving obstacles, our approach efficiently computes accurate collision probability between the robot and obstacles with upper error bounds. Furthermore, we describe a prediction algorithm for future obstacle position and motion that accounts for both spatial and temporal uncertainties. We present a trajectory optimization algorithm for high-DOF robots in dynamic, uncertain environments base…

We present an efficient algorithm for motion planning and control of a robot system with a high number of degrees-of-freedom. These include high-DOF soft robots or an articulated robot interacting with a deformable environment. Our approach takes into account dynamics constraints and present a novel technique to accelerate the forward dynamic computation using a data-driven method. We precompute the forward dynamic function of the robot system on a hierarchical adaptive grid. Furthermore, we exploit the properties of underactuated robot systems and perform these computations for a few DOFs. We…
Motion control of mobile manipulators (a robotic arm mounted on a mobile base) can be challenging for complex tasks such as material and package handling. In this paper, a task-space stabilization controller based on Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) is designed and implemented to a 10 Degrees of Freedom (DOF) mobile manipulator which consists of a 7-DOF robotic arm and a 3-DOF mobile base. The system model is based on kinematic models where the end-effector orientation is parameterized directly by a rotation matrix. The state and control constraints as well as singularity constraints …

A family of reconfigurable parallel robots can change motion modes by passing through constraint singularities by locking and releasing some passive joints of the robot. This paper is about the kinematics, the workspace and singularity analysis of a 3-PRPiR parallel robot involving lockable Pi and R (revolute) joints. Here a Pi joint may act as a 1-DOF planar parallelogram if its lock-able P (prismatic) joint is locked or a 2-DOF RR serial chain if its lockable P joint is released. The operation modes of the robot include a 3T operation modes to three 2T1R operation modes with two different di…

When a dual-arm robot clamps a rigid object in an environment for human beings, the environment or the collaborating human will impose incidental disturbance on the operated object or the robot arm, leading to clamping failure, damaging the robot even hurting the human. This research proposes a prioritized hierarchical compliance control to simultaneously deal with the two types of disturbances in the dual-arm robot clamping. First, we use hierarchical quadratic programming (HQP) to solve the robot inverse kinematics under the joint constraints and prioritize the compliance for the disturbance…
Solving task planning problems involving multiple objects and multiple robotic arms poses scalability challenges. Such problems involve not only coordinating multiple high-DoF arms, but also searching through possible sequences of actions including object placements, and handoffs. The current work identifies a useful connection between multi-arm rearrangement and recent results in multi-body path planning on graphs with vertex capacity constraints. Solving a synchronized multi-arm rearrangement at a high-level involves reasoning over a modal graph, where nodes correspond to stable object place…

This paper presents a novel three-degree-of-freedom (3-DOF) translational parallel manipulator (TPM) by using a topological design method of parallel mechanism (PM) based on position and orientation characteristic (POC) equations. The proposed PM is only composed of lower-mobility joints and actuated prismatic joints, together with the investigations on three kinematic issues of importance. The first aspect pertains to geometric modeling of the TPM in connection with its topological characteristics, such as the POC, degree of freedom and coupling degree, from which its symbolic direct kinemati…

According to the topological design theory and method of parallel mechanism (PM) based on position and orientation characteristic (POC) equations, this paper studied a 3-DOF translational PM that has three advantages, i.e., (i) it consists of three fixed actuated prismatic joints, (ii) the PM has analytic solutions to the direct and inverse kinematic problems, and (iii) the PM is of partial motion decoupling property. Firstly, the main topological characteristics, such as the POC, degree of freedom and coupling degree were calculated for kinematic modeling. Thanks to these properties, the dire…
We present a method for system identification of flexible objects by measuring forces and displacement during interaction with a manipulating arm. We model the object's structure and flexibility by a chain of rigid bodies connected by torsional springs. Unlike previous work, the proposed optimal control approach using variational integrators allows identification of closed loops, which include the robot arm itself. This allows using the resulting models for planning in configuration space of the robot. In order to solve the resulting problem efficiently, we develop a novel method for fast disc…
Soft robots are promising for manipulation tasks thanks to their compliance, safety, and high degree of freedom. However, the commonly used bidirectional continuum segment design means soft robotic manipulators only function in a limited hemispherical workspace. This work increases a soft robotic arm's workspace by designing, fabricating, and controlling an additional soft prismatic actuator at the base of the soft arm. This actuator consists of pneumatic artificial muscles and a piston, making the actuator back-driveable. We increase the task space volume by 116\%, and we are now able to perf…

Motor babbling and goal babbling has been used for sensorimotor learning of highly redundant systems in soft robotics. Recent works in goal babbling has demonstrated successful learning of inverse kinematics (IK) on such systems, and suggests that babbling in the goal space better resolves motor redundancy by learning as few sensorimotor mapping as possible. However, for musculoskeletal robot systems, motor redundancy can be of useful information to explain muscle activation patterns, thus the term motor abundance. In this work, we introduce some simple heuristics to empirically define the unk…

Motion planning is a key tool that allows robots to navigate through an environment without collisions. The problem of robot motion planning has been studied in great detail over the last several decades, with researchers initially focusing on systems such as planar mobile robots and low degree-of-freedom (DOF) robotic arms. The increased use of high DOF robots that must perform tasks in real time in complex dynamic environments spurs the need for fast motion planning algorithms. In this overview, we discuss several types of strategies for motion planning in high dimensional spaces and dissect…

This technical report gives an overview of our work on control algorithms dealing with redundant robot systems for achieving human-like motion characteristics. Previously, we developed a novel control law to exhibit human-motion characteristics in redundant robot arm systems as well as arm-trunk systems for reaching tasks [1], [2]. This newly developed method nullifies the need for the computation of pseudo-inverse of Jacobian while the formulation and optimization of any artificial performance index is not necessary. The time-varying properties of the muscle stiffness and damping as well as t…
Described here is a simple, reliable, and quite general method for rapid computation of robot arm inverse kinematic solutions and motion path plans in the presence of complex obstructions. The method derived from the MSC (map-seeking circuit) algorithm, optimized to exploit the characteristics of practical arm configurations. The representation naturally incorporates both arm and obstacle geometries. The consequent performance on modern hardware is suitable for applications requiring real-time response, including smooth continuous avoidance of dynamic obstacles which impinge on the planned pat…

We present new algorithms to perform fast probabilistic collision queries between convex as well as non-convex objects. Our approach is applicable to general shapes, where one or more objects are represented using Gaussian probability distributions. We present a fast new algorithm for a pair of convex objects, and extend the approach to non-convex models using hierarchical representations. We highlight the performance of our algorithms with various convex and non-convex shapes on complex synthetic benchmarks and trajectory planning benchmarks for a 7-DOF Fetch robot arm.

This work addresses the inverse kinematics of serial robots using conformal geometric algebra. Classical approaches include either the use of homogeneous matrices, which entails high computational cost and execution time or the development of particular geometric strategies that cannot be generalized to arbitrary serial robots. In this work, we present a compact, elegant and intuitive formulation of robot kinematics based on conformal geometric algebra that provides a suitable framework for the closed-form resolution of the inverse kinematic problem for manipulators with a spherical wrist. For…
Serial robot arms have complicated kinematic equations which must be solved to write effective arm planning and control software (the Inverse Kinematics Problem). Existing software packages for inverse kinematics often rely on numerical methods which have significant shortcomings. Here we report a new symbolic inverse kinematics solver which overcomes the limitations of numerical methods, and the shortcomings of previous symbolic software packages. We integrate Behavior Trees, an execution planning framework previously used for controlling intelligent robot behavior, to organize the equation s…
Future NASA lander missions to icy moons will require completely automated, accurate, and data efficient calibration methods for the robot manipulator arms that sample icy terrains in the lander's vicinity. To support this need, this paper presents a Gaussian Process (GP) approach to the classical manipulator kinematic calibration process. Instead of identifying a corrected set of Denavit-Hartenberg kinematic parameters, a set of GPs models the residual kinematic error of the arm over the workspace. More importantly, this modeling framework allows a Gaussian Process Upper Confident Bound (GP-U…
