According to the topological design theory and method of parallel mechanism (PM) based on position and orientation characteristic (POC) equations, this paper studied a 3-DOF translational PM that has three advantages, i.e., (i) it consists of three fixed actuated prismatic joints, (ii) the PM has analytic solutions to the direct and inverse kinematic problems, and (iii) the PM is of partial motion decoupling property. Firstly, the main topological characteristics, such as the POC, degree of freedom and coupling degree were calculated for kinematic modeling. Thanks to these properties, the direct and inverse kinematic problems can be readily solved. Further, the conditions of the singular configurations of the PM were analyzed which corresponds to its partial motion decoupling property.
In this paper a new asymmetric 3-translational (3T) parallel manipulator, i.e., RPa(3R) 2R+RPa, with zero coupling degree and decoupled motion is firstly proposed according to topology design theory of parallel mechanism (PM) based on position and orientation characteristics (POC) equations. The main topological characteristics such as POC, degree of freedom and coupling degree are calculated. Then, the analytical formula for the direct and inverse kinematic are directly derived since coupling degree of the PM is zero. The study of singular configurations is simple because of the independence …

This paper presents a novel three-degree-of-freedom (3-DOF) translational parallel manipulator (TPM) by using a topological design method of parallel mechanism (PM) based on position and orientation characteristic (POC) equations. The proposed PM is only composed of lower-mobility joints and actuated prismatic joints, together with the investigations on three kinematic issues of importance. The first aspect pertains to geometric modeling of the TPM in connection with its topological characteristics, such as the POC, degree of freedom and coupling degree, from which its symbolic direct kinemati…

Voxel-based structures provide a modular, mechanically flexible periodic lattice which can be used as a soft robot through internal deformations. To engage these structures for robotic tasks, we use a finite element method to characterize the motion caused by deforming single degrees of freedom and develop a reduced kinematic model. We find that node translations propagate periodically along geometric planes within the lattice, and briefly show that translational modes dominate the energy usage of the actuators. The resulting kinematic model frames the structural deformations in terms of user-…
In this research, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been used as a powerful tool to solve the inverse kinematic equations of a parallel robot. For this purpose, we have developed the kinematic equations of a Tricept parallel kinematic mechanism with two rotational and one translational degrees of freedom (DoF). Using the analytical method, the inverse kinematic equations are solved for specific trajectory, and used as inputs for the applied ANNs. The results of both applied networks (Multi-Layer Perceptron and Redial Basis Function) satisfied the required performance in solving complex in…

The subject of this paper is about the kinematic analysis and the trajectory planning of the Orthoglide 5-axis. The Orthoglide 5-axis a five degrees of freedom parallel kinematic machine developed at IRCCyN and is made up of a hybrid architecture, namely, a three degrees of freedom translational parallel manip-ulator mounted in series with a two degrees of freedom parallel spherical wrist. The simpler the kinematic modeling of the Or-thoglide 5-axis, the higher the maximum frequency of its control loop. Indeed, the control loop of a parallel kinematic machine should be computed with a high fre…

Recent works in robotic manipulation through reinforcement learning (RL) or imitation learning (IL) have shown potential for tackling a range of tasks e.g., opening a drawer or a cupboard. However, these techniques generalize poorly to unseen objects. We conjecture that this is due to the high-dimensional action space for joint control. In this paper, we take an alternative approach and separate the task of learning 'what to do' from 'how to do it' i.e., whole-body control. We pose the RL problem as one of determining the skill dynamics for a disembodied virtual manipulator interacting with ar…

This paper presents a sensitivity analysis of the Orthoglide, a 3-DOF translational Parallel Kinematic Machine. Two complementary methods are developed to analyze its sensitivity to its dimensional and angular variations. First, a linkage kinematic analysis method is used to have a rough idea of the influence of the dimensional variations on the location of the end-effector. Besides, this method shows that variations in the design parameters of the same type from one leg to the other have the same influence on the end-effector. However, this method does not take into account the variations in …
We present a new framework for prioritized multi-task motion-force control of fully-actuated robots. This work is established on a careful review and comparison of the state of the art. Some control frameworks are not optimal, that is they do not find the optimal solution for the secondary tasks. Other frameworks are optimal, but they tackle the control problem at kinematic level, hence they neglect the robot dynamics and they do not allow for force control. Still other frameworks are optimal and consider force control, but they are computationally less efficient than ours. Our final claim is …

This paper presents a scalable online algorithm to generate safe and kinematically feasible trajectories for quadrotor swarms. Existing approaches rely on linearizing Euclidean distance-based collision constraints and on axis-wise decoupling of kinematic constraints to reduce the trajectory optimization problem for each quadrotor to a quadratic program (QP). This conservative approximation often fails to find a solution in cluttered environments. We present a novel alternative that handles collision constraints without linearization and kinematic constraints in their quadratic form while still…

The paper proposes a novel approach for the geometrical model calibration of quasi-isotropic parallel kinematic mechanisms of the Orthoglide family. It is based on the observations of the manipulator leg parallelism during motions between the specific test postures and employs a low-cost measuring system composed of standard comparator indicators attached to the universal magnetic stands. They are sequentially used for measuring the deviation of the relevant leg location while the manipulator moves the TCP along the Cartesian axes. Using the measured differences, the developed algorithm estima…

This paper addresses the workspace analysis of two 3-DOF translational parallel mechanisms designed for machining applications. The two machines features three fixed linear joints. The joint axes of the first machine are orthogonal whereas these of the second are parallel. In both cases, the mobile platform moves in the Cartesian $x-y-z$ space with fixed orientation. The workspace analysis is conducted on the basis of prescribed kinetostatic performances. Interval analysis based methods are used to compute the dextrous workspace and the largest cube enclosed in this workspace.

This paper addresses an interval analysis based study that is applied to the design and the comparison of 3-DOF parallel kinematic machines. Two design criteria are used, (i) a regular workspace shape and, (ii) a kinetostatic performance index that needs to be as homogeneous as possible throughout the workspace. The interval analysis based method takes these two criteria into account: on the basis of prescribed kinetostatic performances, the workspace is analysed to find out the largest regular dextrous workspace enclosed in the Cartesian workspace. An algorithm describing this method is intro…

The Orthoglide project aims at designing a new 3-axis machine tool for High Speed Machining. Basis kinematics is a 3 degree-of-freedom translational parallel mechanism. This basis was submitted to isotropic and manipulability constraints that allowed the optmization of its kinematic architecture and legs architecture. Thus, several leg morphologies are convenient for the chosen mechanism. We explain the process that led us to the choice we made for the Orthoglide. A static study is presented to show how singular configurations of the legs can cause stiffness problems.

This paper deals with the kinematics and dynamics of a two degree of freedom spherical manipulator, the wrist of Orthoglide 5-axis. The latter is a parallel kinematics machine composed of two manipulators: i) the Orthoglide 3-axis; a three-dof translational parallel manipulator that belongs to the family of Delta robots, and ii) the Agile eye; a two-dof parallel spherical wrist. The geometric and inertial parameters used in the model are determined by means of a CAD software. The performance of the spherical wrist is emphasized by means of several test trajectories. The effects of machining an…

Robotic grippers are widely used in industries for handling objects. This paper presents the procedure of design and fabrication of a stepper motor controlled robotic gripper to be used in industries for handling small objects. The gripper has one degree of freedom for linear motion and one degree of freedom for rotational motion. A linear actuator has been employed to give translational motion to the gripper. Based on the design requirement data, a kinematic analysis has been done to accurately predict the design parameters useful in proper selection of motor and linear actuator.
This paper presents an omnidirectional aerial manipulation platform for robust and responsive interaction with unstructured environments, toward the goal of contact-based inspection. The fully actuated tilt-rotor aerial system is equipped with a rigidly mounted end-effector, and is able to exert a 6 degree of freedom force and torque, decoupling the system's translational and rotational dynamics, and enabling precise interaction with the environment while maintaining stability. An impedance controller with selective apparent inertia is formulated to permit compliance in certain degrees of free…
The subject of this paper is the optimal design of a parallel mechanism intended for three-axis machining applications. Parallel mechanisms are interesting alternative designs in this context but most of them are designed for three- or six-axis machining applications. In the last case, the position and the orientation of the tool are coupled and the shape of the workspace is complex. The aim of this paper is to use a simple parallel mechanism with two-degree-of-freedom (dof) for translational motions and to add one leg to have one-dof rotational motion. The kinematics and singular configuratio…
