The interaction of light with solids gives rise to new bosonic quasiparticles, with the exciton being---undoubtedly---the most famous of these polaritons. While excitons are the generic polaritons of semiconductors, we show that for strongly correlated systems another polariton is prevalent---originating from the dominant antiferromagnetic or charge density wave fluctuations in these systems. As these are usually associated with a wave vector ${\mathbf k}= (π,π,\ldots)$ or close to it, we propose to call the derived polaritons $π$-tons. These $π$-tons yield the leading vertex correction to the optical conductivity in all correlated models studied: the Hubbard, the extended Hubbard model, the Falicov-Kimball, and the Pariser-Parr-Pople model, both in the insulating and in the metallic phase.
The optical conductivity contains information about energy absorption and the underlying physical processes. In finite-dimensional systems, vertex corrections to the bare bubble need to be considered, which is a computationally challenging task. Recent numerical studies showed that in the weak coupling limit, near an ordering instability with wave vector $π$, $π$-tons (or Maki-Thompson diagrams) yield the most relevant vertex corrections. This provides a route for including vertex corrections into, for example, dynamical mean field theory estimates of the optical conductivity. By implementing …
The question about the existence of Bogoliubov's quasiparticles in the BCS wave functions underneath Gutzwiller's projection is of importance to strongly correlated systems. We develop a method to examine the two-particle excitations of Gutzwiller-projected BCS wave functions by using the variational Monte Carlo approach. We find that the exact Gutzwiller-projected quasiparticle (GQP) dispersions are quantitatively reproduced by the Gutzwiller-projected Bogoliubov quasiparticles (GBQP) except the regions where d-wave Cooper pairing is strong. Since GQP still shows higher energy than GBQP near …
We theoretically examine the momentum dependence of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectrum for one-dimensional and two-dimensional cuprates based on the single-band Hubbard model with realistic parameter values. The spectrum is calculated by using the numerical diagonalization technique for finite-size clusters. We focus on excitations across the Mott gap and clarify spectral features coming from the excitations as well as the physics behind them. Good agreement between the theoretical and existing experimental results clearly demonstrates that the RIXS is a potential tool to stud…
Ultrafast spectroscopies constitute a fundamental tool to investigate the dynamics of non-equilibrium many-body states in correlated materials. Two-pulses (pump-probe) experiments have shed new light on the interplay between high-energy electronic excitations and the emerging low-energy properties, such as superconductivity and charge-order, in many interesting materials. Here we will review some recent results on copper oxides and we will propose the use of high-resolution multi-dimensional techniques to investigate the decoherence processes of optical excitations in these systems. This novel…
By exploiting the particle-hole symmetries of the Hubbard model, the periodic Anderson model and the Kondo lattice model at half-filling and applying a generalized version of Lieb's spin-reflection positivity method, we show that the charged gaps of these models are always larger than their spin excitation gaps. This theorem confirms the previous results derived by either the variational approach or the density renormalization group approach.
We apply Coupled Cluster Method to a strongly correlated lattice and develop the Spectral Coupled Cluster equations by finding an approximation to the resolvent operator, that gives the spectral response for an certain class of probe operators. We apply the method to a $MnO_2$ plane model with a parameters choice which corresponds to previous experimental works and which gives a non-nominal symmetry ground state. We show that this state can be observed using our Spectral Coupled Cluster Method by probing the Coupled Cluster solution obtained from the nominal reference state. In this case one o…
The effects associated with interatomic hoppings of excitons and the excitonic Bose condensate formation in the strongly correlated spin crossover systems are considered in the framework of the effective Hamiltonian for the two-band Kanamori model. The appearance of antiferromagnetic ordering due to the exciton order is found even in the absence of interatomic exchange interaction. The spectrum of excitonic excitations is calculated at various points of the "temperature vs. crystal field" phase diagram. Outside the region of exciton ordering, the spectrum has a gap, which vanishes at the bound…
We study spin relaxation and dynamics of collective spin excitations in correlated double--exchange ferromagnets. For this, we introduce an expansion of the Green's functions equations of motion that treats non--perturbativerly all correlations between a given number of spin and charge excitations and becomes exact within a sub--space of states. Our method treats relaxation beyond Fermi's Golden Rule while recovering previous variational results for the spin--wave dispersion. We find that the momentum dependence of the spin--wave dephasing rate changes qualitatively due to the on--site Coulomb…
In this work we investigate charge transport in one-dimensional (1D) insulators via semi-classical and perturbative renormalization group (RG) methods. We consider the problem of electron-electron, electron-phonon and electron-two-level system interactions. We show that non-linear collective modes such as polarons and solitons are reponsible for transport. We find a new excitation in the Mott insulator: the polaronic soliton. We discuss the differences between band and Mott insulators in terms of their spin spectrum and obtain the charge and spin gaps in each one of these systems. We show that…
With wavefunction-based electronic-structure calculations we determine the Cu d-d excitation energies in quasi-one-dimensional spin-chain and ladder copper oxides. A complete set of local excitations has been calculated for cuprates with corner-sharing (Sr2CuO3 and SrCuO2) and edge-sharing (LiVCuO4, CuGeO3, LiCu2O2 and Li2CuO2) CuO4 plaquettes, with corner-sharing CuF6 octahedra (KCuF3), for the ladder system CaCu2O3, and for multiferroic cupric oxide CuO. Our data compare well with available results of optical absorption measurements on KCuF3 and the excitation energies found by resonant inel…
The high-energy collective modes of particle-hole excitations across the spin-orbit gap in $\rm Sr_2IrO_4$ are investigated using the transformed Coulomb interaction terms in the pseudo-spin-orbital basis constituted by the $J=1/2$ and $3/2$ states arising from spin-orbit coupling. With appropriate interaction strengths and renormalized spin-orbit gap, these collective modes yield two well-defined propagating spin-orbit exciton modes, with energy scale and dispersion in excellent agreement with resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements.
The hierarchy of the coupling strengths in a physical system often engenders an effective model at low energies where the decoupled high-energy modes are integrated out. Here, using neutron scattering, we show that the spin excitations in the breathing pyrochlore lattice compound CuInCr$_4$S$_8$ are hierarchical and can be approximated by an effective model of correlated tetrahedra at low energies. At higher energies, intra-tetrahedron excitations together with strong magnon-phonon couplings are observed, which suggests the possible role of the lattice degree of freedom in stabilizing the spin…

Magnon self energy due to spin-charge coupling is calculated for the correlated ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model using a diagrammatic expansion scheme. Systematically incorporating correlation effects in the form of self-energy and vertex corrections, the expansion scheme explicitly preserves the continuous spin rotation symmetry and hence the Goldstone mode. Due to a near cancellation of the correlation-induced quantum correction terms at intermediate coupling and optimal band filling relevant for ferromagnetic manganites, the renormalized magnon energies for the correlated FKLM are nearly i…
We propose an efficient dual boson scheme, which extends the DMFT paradigm to collective excitations in correlated systems. The theory is fully self-consistent both on the one- and on the two-particle level, thus describing the formation of collective modes as well as the renormalization of electronic and bosonic spectra on equal footing. The method employs an effective impurity model comprising both fermionic and bosonic hybridization functions. Only single- and two-electron Green's functions of the reference problem enter the theory, due to the optimal choice of the self-consistency conditio…
We use Ru $L_3$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to study the full range of excitations in Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ from meV-scale magnetic dynamics through to the eV-scale interband transitions. This bilayer $4d$-electron correlated metal expresses a rich phase diagram, displaying long range magnetic order below 56 K followed by a concomitant structural, magnetic and electronic transition at 48 K. In the low temperature phase we observe a magnetic excitation with a bandwidth of $\sim$30 meV and a gap of $\sim$8 meV at the zone center, in excellent agreement with inelastic neutron scat…
By direct measurements of the complex optical conductivity $σ(ν)$ of FeSi we have discovered a broad absorption peak centered at frequency $ν_{0}(4.2 K) \approx 32 cm^{-1}$ that develops at temperatures below 20 K. This feature is caused by spin-polaronic states formed in the middle of the gap in the electronic density of states. We observe the spin excitations between the electronic levels split by the exchange field of $H_{e}=34\pm 6 T$. Spin fluctuations are identified as the main factor determining the formation of the spin polarons and the rich magnetic phase diagram of FeSi.
To determine the strength of essential electronic and magnetic interactions in the iridates Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Ba$_2$IrO$_4$ - potential platforms for high-temperature superconductivity - we use many-body techniques from wavefunction-based electronic-structure theory. Multiplet physics, spin-orbit interactions, and Ir-O hybridization are all treated on equal footing, fully {\it ab initio}. Our calculations put the lowest d-d excitations of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$/Ba$_2$IrO$_4$ at 0.69/0.64 eV, substantially lower than in isostructural cuprates. Charge-transfer excitations start at 3.0/1.9 eV and the magn…
Topologically nontrivial states are common in symmetry broken phases at macroscopic scales. Low dimensional systems bring them to a microscopic level where solitons emerge as single particles. The earliest and latest applications are conducting polymers and spin-Peierls chains. After a history introduction, we shall discuss the topological aspects of elementary excitations, especially the confinement and the dimensional D crossover. At the 1D level we exploit results of different exact and approximate techniques in theory of solitons, for both quantum and semiclassical models, and the related …
The temperature dependence of the gapped triplet excitations (triplons) in the 2D Shastry-Sutherland quantum magnet SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ is studied by means of inelastic neutron scattering. The excitation amplitude rapidly decreases as a function of temperature while the integrated spectral weight can be explained by an isolated dimer model up to 10~K. Analyzing this anomalous spectral line-shape in terms of damped harmonic oscillators shows that the observed damping is due to a two-component process: one component remains sharp and resolution limited while the second broadens. We explain the …
An application of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering technique for studying of optical scale excitations in electron-correlated materials is discussed. Examples are given including data obtained for 3d transition metal, lanthanide, and actinide systems. In some cases, the data are compared with the results of crystal-field multiplet and Anderson impurity model calculations. Advantages of this technigue are pointed out, such as an ability to probe an extended multiplet structure of the ground state configuration, which is not fully accessible by other spectroscopies, an extreme sensitivity of …
We identify a structure in the spectra of 1d lattice models of interacting electrons, characterised by an anomalous gapped branch of elementary excitations. Focusing on a family of Bethe ansatz solvable models, where all excitations are stable against decay, we make a four-way classification of the energy spectrum along with a model belonging to each class. We find in particular that the anomalous excitation branch may switch between the spin and charge symmetry sectors without a change in the ground state. Instead it changes its nature by becoming inaccessible to the ground state.
We develop a general theory of a boson decomposition for both local and non-local interactions in lattice fermion models which allows us to describe fermionic degrees of freedom and collective charge and spin excitations on equal footing. An efficient perturbation theory in the interaction of the fermionic and the bosonic degrees of freedom is constructed in so-called dual variables in the path-integral formalism. This theory takes into account all local correlations of fermions and collective bosonic modes and interpolates between itinerant and localized regimes of electrons in solids. The ze…
In this work we consider a numerically solvable model of a two-electron diatomic molecule to study a recently proposed approximation based on the density-functional theory of so-called strictly correlated electrons (SCE). We map out the full two-particle wave function for a wide range of bond distances and interaction strengths and obtain analytic results for the two-particle states and eigenenergies in various limits of strong and weak interactions, and in the limit of large bond distance. We then study the so-called Hartree-exchange-correlation (Hxc) kernel of time-dependent density function…
Orbital-lattice coupled excitation dynamics in orbitally degenerate correlated systems are examined. We present a theoretical framework, where both local vibronic excitations and superexchange-type inter-site interactions are dealt with on an equal footing. We generalize the spin-wave approximation so as to take local vibronic states into account. Present method is valid from weak to strong Jahn-Teller coupling magnitudes. Two characteristic excitation modes coexist; a low-energy dispersive mode and high-energy multi-peak mode. These are identified as a collective vibronic mode, and Flanck-Con…
Despite significant progress in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments on cuprates at the Cu L-edge, a theoretical understanding of the cross-section remains incomplete in terms of elementary excitations and the connection to both charge and spin structure factors. Here we use state-of-the-art, unbiased numerical calculations to study the low energy excitations probed by RIXS in undoped and doped Hubbard model relevant to the cuprates. The results highlight the importance of scattering geometry, in particular both the incident and scattered x-ray photon polarization, and demons…
Solar cells based on conventional semiconductors have low efficiency in converting solar energy into electricity because the excess energy beyond the gap of an incident solar photon is converted into heat by phonons. Here we show by ab initio methods that the presence of strong Coulomb interactions in strongly correlated insulators (SCI) causes the highly photo-excited electron-hole pair to decay fast into multiple electron-hole pairs via impact ionization (II). We show that the II rate in the insulating $M_1$ phase of vanadium dioxide (chosen for this study as it is considered a prototypical …
The optical conductivity contains relevant information on the properties of correlated electron systems. In infinite dimensions, where dynamical mean field theory becomes exact, vertex corrections can be neglected and the conductivity computed from particle-hole bubbles. An interesting question concerns the nature and effect of the most relevant vertex corrections in finite-dimensional systems. A recent numerical study showed that the dominant vertex correction near an ordering instability with wave vector π comes from a vertical ladder, analogous to the Maki-Thompson diagram. Since the RPA ve…
We directly trace the near- and mid-infrared transmission change of a VO$_2$ thin film during an ultrafast insulator-to-metal transition triggered by high-field multi-terahertz transients. Non-thermal switching into a metastable metallic state is governed solely by the amplitude of the applied terahertz field. In contrast to resonant excitation below the threshold fluence, no signatures of excitonic self-trapping are observed. Our findings are consistent with the generation of spatially separated charge pairs and a cooperative transition into a delocalized metallic state by THz field-induced t…
Spin-flip excitations in a quantum Hall electron system at fixed filling factor nu=2 are modelled and studied under conditions of a strong Coulomb interaction when the `Landau level mixing' is a dominant factor determining the excitation energy. The `one-exciton' approach used for the purely electronic excitations in question allows us to describe the Stoner transition from the unpolarized/paramgnet state to the polarized/ferromagnet one. The theoretical results are compared with the available experimental data.
We study the effects of charge degrees of freedom on the spin excitation dynamics in quasi-one dimensional magnetic materials. Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we calculate the dynamical spin structure factor of the Hubbard model at half electronic filling on a chain and on a ladder geometry, and compare the results with those obtained using the Heisenberg model, where charge degrees of freedom are considered frozen. For both chains and two-leg ladders, we find that the Hubbard model spectrum qualitatively resembles the Heisenberg spectrum -- with low-energy peaks resembl…
The impact of long-range spin-spin correlations on the structure of a flat portion in single-particle spectra $ξ(p)$, which emerges beyond the point, where the Landau state loses its stability, is studied. We supplement the well-known Nozieres model of a Fermi system with limited scalar long-range forces by a similar long-range spin-dependent term and calculate the spectra versus its strength $g$. It is found that Nozieres results hold as long as $g>0$. However, with $g$ changing its sign, the spontaneous magnetization is shown to arise at any nonzero $g$. The increase of the strength $|g|$ is…
We study the excitation energy for slow changes of the hopping parameter in the Falicov-Kimball model with nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory. The excitation energy vanishes algebraically for long ramp times with an exponent that depends on whether the ramp takes place within the metallic phase, within the insulating phase, or across the Mott transition line. For ramps within metallic or insulating phase the exponents are in agreement with a perturbative analysis for small ramps. The perturbative expression quite generally shows that the exponent depends explicitly on the spectrum of t…
When two periodic potentials compete in materials, one may adopt the other, which straightforwardly generates topological defects. Of particular interest are domain walls in charge-, dipole-, and spin-ordered systems, which govern macroscopic properties and important functionality. However, detailed atomic and electronic structures of domain walls have often been uncertain and the microscopic mechanism of their functionality has been elusive. Here, we clarify the complete atomic and electronic structures of the domain wall network, a honeycomb network connected by Z$_{3}$ vortices, in the near…
The non-equilibrium semiconductors physics is based on the paradigm that different degrees of freedom interact on different timescales. In this context the photo-excitation is often treated as an impulsive injection of electronic energy that is transferred to other degrees of freedom only at later times. Here, by studying the ultrafast particles dynamics in a archetypal strongly correlated charge-transfer insulator (La2CuO4), we show that the interaction between electrons and bosons manifest itself directly in the photo-excitation processes of a correlated material. With the aid of a general t…
Charge excitations across an electronic band gap play an important role in opto-electronics and light harvesting. In contrast to conventional semiconductors, studies of above-band-gap photoexcitations in strongly correlated materials are still in their infancy. Here we reveal the ultrafast dynamics controlled by Hund's physics in strongly correlated photo-excited NiO. By combining time-resolved two-photon photoemission experiments with state-of-the-art numerical calculations, an ultrafast ($\lesssim$ 10\,fs) relaxation due to Hund excitations and related photo-induced in-gap states are identif…
The history of modern condensed matter physics may be regarded as the competition and reconciliation between Stoner's and Anderson's physical pictures, where the former is based on momentum-space descriptions focusing on long wave-length fluctuations while the latter is based on real-space physics emphasizing emergent localized excitations. In particular, these two view points compete with each other in various nonperturbative phenomena, which range from the problem of high T$_{c}$ superconductivity, quantum spin liquids in organic materials and frustrated spin systems, heavy-fermion quantum c…
Properties of low-energy excitations in one-dimensional superconductors and density-wave systems are examined by the bosonization technique. In addition to the usual spin and charge quantum numbers, a new, independently measurable attribute is introduced to describe elementary, low-energy excitations. It can be defined as a number w which determines, in multiple of $π$, how many times the phase of the order parameter winds as an excitation is transposed from far left to far right. The winding number is zero for electrons and holes with conventional quantum numbers, but it acquires a nontrivial…
We consider the collective, long-wavelength charge excitations in correlated media in presence of short- and long-range forces. As an example for the case of a short-range interaction, we examine the two-dimensional Hubbard model within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). It is shown explicitly that the DMFT susceptibility including vertex corrections respects the Ward identity and yields a manifestly gauge-invariant response in finite dimensions. For computing the susceptibility, we use a different expression and establish its formal equivalence to the standard DMFT formula. It allows for a m…
We study a superfluid on a lattice close to a transition into a supersolid phase and show that a uniform superflow in the homogeneous superfluid can drive the roton gap to zero. This leads to supersolid order around the vortex core in the superfluid, with the size of the modulated pattern around the core being related to the bulk superfluid density and roton gap. We also study the electronic tunneling density of states for a uniform superconductor near a phase transition into a supersolid phase. Implications are considered for strongly correlated superconductors.
We propose a method to calculate the charge dynamical structure factors for the ground states of correlated electron systems based on the variational Monte Carlo method. Our benchmarks for the one- and two-dimensional Hubbard models show that inclusion of composite-fermion excitations in the basis set greatly improves the accuracy, in reference to the exact charge dynamical structure factors for clusters. Together with examination for larger systems beyond tractable sizes by the exact diagonalization, our results indicate that the variational Monte Carlo method is a promising way for studies o…
We have extended the range of the high-pressure optical spectroscopy to the far-infrared region keeping the accuracy of ambient-pressure experiments. The newly-developed method offers a powerful tool for the study of pressure-induced phase transitions and electronic-structural changes in correlated electron systems. The novel-type optical pressure cell, equipped with large free-aperture diamond window, allows the measurement of optical reflectivity down to $ω\approx20-30$ cm$^{-1}$ for hydrostatic pressures up to $p\approx26$ kbar. The efficiency of the technique is demonstrated by the investi…
We develop a unified theoretical picture for excitations in Mott systems, portraying both the heavy quasiparticle excitations and the Hubbard bands as features of an emergent Fermi liquid state formed in an extended Hilbert space, which is non-perturbatively connected to the physical system. This observation sheds light on the fact that even the incoherent excitations in strongly correlated matter often display a well defined Bloch character, with pronounced momentum dispersion. Furthermore, it indicates that the Mott point can be viewed as a topological transition, where the number of distinc…
In this work we investigate the spectral and transport properties of a single correlated layer attached to two metallic leads, with particular focus on the low-energy physics. A steady state current is driven across the layer by applying a bias voltage between the leads. Extending previous work we introduce a nonzero temperature in the leads, which enables us to study the influence of quasiparticle excitations on the transport characteristics in detail. Even though the system is clearly three dimensional we obtain current-voltage curves that closely resemble those of single quantum dots. Furth…
It is proven that the lowest excitations $E_{low}(k)$ of one-dimensional half-integer spin generalized Heisenberg models and half-filled extended Hubbard models are $π$-periodic functions. For Hubbard models at fractional fillings $E_{low}{(k+ 2 k_f)} = E_{low}(k)$, where $2 k_f= πn$, and $n$ is the number of electrons per unit cell. Moreover, if one of the ground states of the system is magnetic in the thermodynamic limit, then $E_{low}(k) = 0$ for any $k$, so the spectrum is gapless at any wave vector. The last statement is true for any integer or half-integer value of the spin.
Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) is a spectroscopic technique which has been widely used to study various elementary excitations in correlated and other condensed matter systems. For strongly correlated materials, besides boosting the overall signal the dependence of the resonant profile on incident photon energy is still not fully understood. Previous endeavors in connecting indirect RIXS, such as Cu K-edge for example where scattering takes place only via the core-hole created as an intermediate state, with the charge dynamical structure factor S(q,ω) neglected complicated dependen…
The propagation of an external transverse magnetic signal acting locally on a 1d chain of spins generates a disturbance which runs through the system. This quantum effect can be interpreted as a classical traveling wave which contains a superposition of a large set of frequencies depending on the size of the chain. Its local amplitude fixes the size of the z-component of the spins at any location in the chain. The average and maximum value of the group velocity are determined and compared with the transmission velocity fixed by the Lieb-Robinson upper bound inequality.
We investigate the exotic Peierls state in the one-dimensional organic compound (EDO-TTF)_{2}X, wherein the Peierls transition is accompanied by the bending of molecules and also by a fourfold periodic array of charge disproportionation along the one-dimensional chain. Such a Peierls state, wherein the interplay between the electron correlation and the electron-phonon interaction takes an important role, is examined based on an extended Peierls-Holstein-Hubbard model that includes the alternation of the elastic energies for both the lattice distortion and the molecular deformation. The model r…
Elementary excitations in condensed matter capture the complex many-body dynamics of interacting basic entities in a simple quasiparticle picture. In magnetic systems the most established quasiparticles are magnons, collective excitations that reside in ordered spin structures, and spinons, their fractional counterparts that emerge in disordered, yet correlated spin states. Here we report on the discovery of elementary excitation inherent to spin-stripe order that represents a bound state of two phason quasiparticles, resulting in a wiggling-like motion of the magnetic moments. We observe thes…
Spectra of one-electron and collective excitations in narrow-band ferromagnets with unquenched orbital moments are calculated in various theoretical models. The interaction of spin and orbital excitations with conduction electrons results in the damping of the former which, however, turns out to be rather small; therefore, apart from usual spin waves, well-defined orbitons can exist. Non-quasiparticle states occur in the electron energy spectrum near the Fermi energy due to this interaction. The criteria of stability of the saturated spin and orbital ferromagnetic ordering are considered. Poss…
We study theoretically the simultaneous, photo-induced two-particle excitations of strongly correlated systems on the basis of the Hubbard model. Under certain conditions specified in this work, the corre- sponding transition probability is related to the two-particle spectral function which we calculate using three different methods: the dynamical-mean field theory combined with quantum Monte Carlo (DMFT- QMC) technique, the first order perturbation theory and the ladder approximations. The results are analyzed and compared for systems at the verge of the metal-insulator transitions. The depe…
We have investigated the spin dynamics in the strongly correlated chain copper oxide SrCuO$_2$ for energies up to $\gtrsim 0.6$ eV using inelastic neutron scattering. We observe an acoustic band of magnetic excitations which is well described by the "Muller-ansatz" for the two-spinon continuum in the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain. The lower boundary of the continuum extends up to $\approx 360$ meV, which corresponds to an exchange constant $J = 226(12)$ meV. Our finding that an effective Heisenberg spin Hamlitonian adequately describes the spin sector of this 1D electron system…
The temperature dependence of the transport properties of the metallic phase of a frustrated Hubbard model on the hypercubic lattice at half-filling are calculated. Dynamical mean-field theory, which maps the Hubbard model onto a single impurity Anderson model that is solved self-consistently, and becomes exact in the limit of large dimensionality, is used. As the temperature increases there is a smooth crossover from coherent Fermi liquid excitations at low temperatures to incoherent excitations at high temperatures. This crossover leads to a non-monotonic temperature dependence for the resis…
A detailed description of the time-step-targetting time evolution method within the DMRG algorithm is presented. The focus of this publication is on the implementation of the algorithm, and on its generic application. The case of one-site excitations within a Hubbard model is analyzed as a test for the algorithm, using open chains and two-leg ladder geometries. The accuracy of the procedure in the case of the recently discussed holon-doublon photo excitations of Mott insulators is also analyzed. Performance and parallelization issues are discussed. In addition, the full open-source code is pro…
We study magnetic excitations in a bilayer of an antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator and a correlated metal, in which double occupancy is forbidden. The effective action of the AF spin wave in the AF insulator is derived by using the path integral formula within the second order of interplane coupling. The electron correlation in the correlated metal is treated by the Gutzwiller approximation, which renormalizes the hopping integrals by g_t as proportional to the hole density. The linewidth of the AF spin wave excitations originates from particle-hole excitations in the correlated metal. By incre…
