We use Ru $L_3$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to study the full range of excitations in Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ from meV-scale magnetic dynamics through to the eV-scale interband transitions. This bilayer $4d$-electron correlated metal expresses a rich phase diagram, displaying long range magnetic order below 56 K followed by a concomitant structural, magnetic and electronic transition at 48 K. In the low temperature phase we observe a magnetic excitation with a bandwidth of $\sim$30 meV and a gap of $\sim$8 meV at the zone center, in excellent agreement with inelastic neutron scattering data. The dispersion can be modeled using a Heisenberg Hamiltonian for a bilayer $\mathrm{S}=1$ system with single ion anisotropy terms. At a higher energy loss, $dd$-type excitations show heavy damping in the presence of itinerant electrons, giving rise to a fluorescence-like signal appearing between the $t_{2g}$ and $e_g$ bands. At the same time, we observe a resonance originating from localized $t_{2g}$ excitations, in analogy to the structurally related Mott-insulator Ca$_2$RuO$_4$. But whereas Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ shows sharp separate spin-orbit excitations and Hund's-rule driven spin-state transitions, here we identify only a single broad asymmetric feature. These results indicate that local intra-ionic interactions underlie the correlated physics in Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, even as the excitations become strongly mixed in the presence of itinerant electrons.
Motivated by recent experimental realizations of polar metals with broken inversion symmetry, we explore the emergence of strong correlations driven by criticality when the polar transition temperature is tuned to zero. Overcoming previously discussed challenges, we demonstrate a robust mechanism for coupling between the critical mode and electrons in multiband metals. We identify and characterize several novel interacting phases, including non-Fermi liquids, when band crossings are close to the Fermi level and present their experimental signatures for three generic types of band crossings.
In the presence of multiple bands, well-known electronic instabilities may acquire new complexity. While multiband superconductivity is the subject of extensive studies, the possibility of multiband charge density waves (CDWs) has been largely ignored so far. Here, combining energy dependent scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) topography with a simple model of the charge modulations and a self-consistent calculation of the CDW gap, we find evidence for a multiband CDW in 2H-NbSe$_2$. This CDW not only involves the opening of a gap on the inner band around the K-point, but also on the outer ba…
Slow oscillations (SlO) of magnetoresistance is a convenient tool to measure electronic structure parameters in quasi-two-dimensional metals. We study the possibility to apply this method to multi-band conductors, e.g. to iron-based high-temperature superconducting materials. We show that SlO can be used to measure the interlayer transfer integral in multi-band conductors similar to single-band metals. In addition, the SlO allow to measure and compare the effective masses or the electron scattering rates in various bands.
We introduce an approximate method which can be used to simulate the optical conductivity data of correlated multiband systems for normal and superconducting cases by taking advantage of a reverse process of a usual optical data analysis, which has been used to extract the electron-boson spectral density function from measured optical spectra of single-band systems, like cuprates. We applied this method to optical conductivity data of two multiband pnictide systems (Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 and LiFeAs) and obtained the electron-boson spectral density functions. The obtained electron-boson spectral dens…
Studies of superconductivity in multiband correlated electronic systems has become one of the central topics in condensed matter/materials physics. In this paper, we present the results of thermodynamic measurements on the superconducting filled skutterudite system Pr$_{1-x}$Ce$_x$Pt$_4$Ge$_{12}$ ($ 0 \leq x \leq 0.2$) to investigate how substitution of Ce at Pr sites affects superconductivity. We find that an increase in Ce concentration leads to a suppression of the superconducting transition temperature from $T_{c}\sim 7.9$ K for $x=0$ to $T_c\sim 0.6$ K for $x=0.14$. Our analysis of the sp…

We study the emergence of multiband superconductivity with $s$- and $d-$wave symmetry on the background of spin density wave (SDW). We show that the SDW coherence factors renormalize the momentum dependence of the superconducting (SC) gap, yielding a SC state with an \emph{unconventional} s-wave symmetry. Interband Cooper pair scattering stabilizes superconductivity in both symmetries. With increasing SDW order, the s-wave state is more strongly suppressed than the d-wave state. Our results are universally applicable to two-dimensional systems with a commensurate SDW.
Correlation computations on multiband Hubbard Hamiltonians are presented. It is shown why the proper degeneracy is of vital importance and that the atomic exchange interaction plays a particular role. The different methods are connected, and their results are discussed. Many experimental properties for the elemental solids can be explained by single closely related sets of parameters each. There is an exception, Tc of Fe. Here, a novel feature of longer-range interactions enters, as demonstrated on ab-initio results of the Local Ansatz for Fe. Connections are made to LSDA-calculations; and the…
We study electronic properties of solids with correlated d electrons which could be described by a multiband Hubbard Hamiltonian in the weak-interaction case, $U/w<1$. The one-electron part of the many-body Hamiltonian is described by a tight-binding LMTO method. The many-body part is treated by non-selfconsistent FLEX-type approximations with adjusted chemical potential not to change the LMTO band filling. The calculated DOS gets narrower but is only little influenced by electron correlations at the Fermi energy. A precursor of a satellite band in the paramagnetic bcc Ni is found at about 6 e…
Electronic states of single-component molecular metals M(tmdt)2 (M = Ni, Au) are studied theoretically. We construct an effective three-band Hubbard model for each material by numerical fitting to first-principles band calculations, while referring to molecular orbital calculations for the isolated molecules. The model consists of two kinds of base orbital for each molecule with hybridization between them, i.e., a π-character orbital for each of the two tmdt ligands, and, a pdπ-orbital for M = Ni or a pdσ-orbital for M = Au centered on the metal site; this indicates that these materials can be…
Although the functional renormalization group (fRG) is by now a well-established method for investigating correlated electron systems, it is still undergoing significant technical and conceptual improvements. In particular, the motivation to optimally exploit the parallelism of modern computing platforms has recently led to the development of the "truncated-unity" functional renormalization group (TU-fRG). Here, we review this fRG variant, and we provide its extension to multiband systems with spin-orbit coupling. Furthermore, we discuss some aspects of the implementation and outline opportuni…
Recent experimental studies performed in the normal state of iron-based superconductors have discovered the existence of the $C_4$-symmetric (tetragonal) itinerant magnetic state. This state can be described as a spin density wave with two distinct magnetic vectors ${\vec Q}_1$ and ${\vec Q}_2$. Given an itinerant nature of magnetism in iron-pnictides, we develop a quasiclassical theory of tetragonal magnetic order in disordered three-band metal with anisotropic band structure. Within our model we find that the $C_4$-symmetric magnetism competes with the $C_2$-symmetric state with a single ${\…
We report evidence for multiband transport and an insulating low-temperature normal state in superconducting K$_{0.50}$Na$_{0.24}$Fe$_{1.52}$Se$_{2}$ with $T_{c}\approx 20$ K. The temperature-dependent upper critical field, $H_{c2}$, is well described by a two-band BCS model. The normal-state resistance, accessible at low temperatures only in pulsed magnetic fields, shows an insulating logarithmic temperature dependence as $T \rightarrow 0$ after superconductivity is suppressed. This is similar as for high-$T_{c}$ copper oxides and granular type-I superconductors, suggesting that the supercond…
In the study of strongly-correlated, many-electron systems, the Hubbard Kanamori (HK) model has emerged as one of the prototypes for transition metal oxide physics. The model is multi-band in nature and contains Hund's coupling terms, which have pronounced effects on metal-insulator transitions, high-temperature superconductivity, and other physical properties. In the following, we present a complete theoretical framework for treating the HK model using the ground state Auxiliary Field Quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) method and analyze its performance on few-band models whose parameters approximat…
A systematic method of calculating the dynamical conductivity tensor in a general multiband electronic model with strong boson-mediated electron-electron interactions is described. The theory is based on the exact semiclassical expression for the coupling between valence electrons and electromagnetic fields and on the self-consistent Bethe--Salpeter equations for the electron-hole propagators. The general diagrammatic perturbation expressions for the intraband and interband single-particle conductivity are determined. The relations between the intraband Bethe--Salpeter equation, the quantum tr…
Low density two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) with spin-orbit coupling are highly sensitive to an in-plane magnetic field, which impacts their Fermi surfaces and transport properties. Such 2DEGs, formed at transition metal oxide surfaces or interfaces, can also undergo surface phase transitions leading to polar metals which exhibit electronic nematicity. Motivated by experiments on such systems, we theoretically study magnetotransport in $t_{2g}$ orbital systems, using Hamiltonians which include atomic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and broken inversion symmetry, for both square symmetry (001)…
We apply local orbital basis density functional theory (using SIESTA) coupled with a mapping to the Anderson impurity model to estimate the Coulomb assisted or correlated hybridization between transition metal d-orbitals and ligand sp-orbitals for a number of molecular complexes. We find remarkably high values which can have several physical implications including: (i) renormalization of effective single band or multiband Hubbard model parameters for the cuprates and, potentially, elemental iron, and (ii) spin polarizing molecular transistors.
We discuss a general approach to a realistic theory of the electronic structure in materials containing correlated d- or f- electrons. The main feature of this approach is the taking into account the energy dependence of the electron self-energy with the momentum dependence being neglected (local approximation). In the case of strong interactions (U/W>>1 - rare-earth system) the Hubbard-I approach is the most suitable. Starting from an exact atomic Green function with the constrained density matrix the band structure problem is formulated as the functional problem on Nmm' for f-electrons and t…

A novel hybrid scheme is proposed. The {\it ab initio} LDA calculation is used to construct the Wannier functions and obtain single electron and Coulomb parameters of the multiband Hubbard-type model. In strong correlation regime the electronic structure within multiband Hubbard model is calculated by the Generalized Tight-Binding (GTB) method, that combines the exact diagonalization of the model Hamiltonian for a small cluster (unit cell) with perturbation treatment of the intercluster hopping and interactions. For undoped La$_2$CuO$_4$ and Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ this scheme results in charge transfer…
The functional renormalization group (RG) in combination with Fermi surface patching is a well-established method for studying Fermi liquid instabilities of correlated electron systems. In this article, we further develop this method and combine it with mean-field theory to approach multiband systems with spin-orbit coupling, and we apply this to a tight-binding Rashba model with an attractive, local interaction. The spin dependence of the interaction vertex is fully implemented in a RG flow without SU(2) symmetry, and its momentum dependence is approximated in a refined projection scheme. In …
We consider a problem of superconductivity coexistence with the spin-density-wave order in disordered multiband metals. It is assumed that random variations of the disorder potential on short length scales render the interactions between electrons to develop spatial correlations. As a consequence, both superconducting and magnetic order parameters become spatially inhomogeneous and are described by the universal phenomenological quantities, whereas all the microscopic details are encoded in the correlation function of the coupling strength fluctuations. We consider a minimal model with two nes…
Superconductivity in the heavy-fermion compound CeCu2Si2 is a prototypical example of Cooper pairs formed by strongly correlated electrons. For more than 30 years, it has been believed to arise from nodal d-wave pairing mediated by a magnetic glue. Here, we report a detailed study of the specific heat and magnetization at low temperatures for a high-quality single crystal. Unexpectedly, the specific-heat measurements exhibit exponential decay with a two-gap feature in its temperature dependence, along with a linear dependence as a function of magnetic field and the absence of oscillations in t…
We consider how electron-phonon interaction influences the insulator-metal transitions driven by doping in the strongly correlated system. Using the polaronic version of the generalized tight-binding method, we investigate a multiband two-dimensional model taking into account both Holstein and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger types of electron-lattice contributions. For adiabatic ratio of the hopping parameter and the phonon field energy, different types of band structure evolution are observed in a wide electron-phonon parameter range. We demonstrate the relationship between transition features and such …

We consider the extended Hubbard model and introduce a corresponding Heisenberg-like problem written in terms of spin operators. The derived formalism is reminiscent of Anderson's idea of the effective exchange interaction and takes into account nonlocal correlation effects. The results for the exchange interaction and magnetic susceptibility are expressed in terms of single-particle quantities, which can be obtained efficiently in realistic calculations of multiband systems. In the strongly spin-polarized limit, when the local magnetic moment is well-defined, the exchange interaction reduces …
The extrapolation of small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations is used to examine the influence of correlated hopping on valence and metal-insulator transitions in the one-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model. It is shown that the ground-state phase diagram as well as the picture of valence and metal-insulator transitions found for the conventional Falicov-Kimball model (without correlated hopping) are strongly changed when the correlated hopping term is added. The effect of correlated hopping is so strong that it can induce the insulator-metal transition, even in the half-filled band case…
We study the effect of spatial inhomogeneity on the physics of a strongly correlated electron system exhibiting a metallic phase and a Mott insulating phase, represented by the simple Hubbard model. In three dimensions, we consider various geometries, including vacuum-metal-vacuum, a junction between a weakly and a strongly correlated metal, and finally the double junctions metal-Mott insulator-metal and metal-strongly correlated metal- metal. We applied to these problems the self-consistent Gutzwiller technique recently developed in our group, whose approximate nature is compensated by an ext…
The large-degeneracy expansion for dilute magnetic alloys is extended to account for conduction electrons interactions. Particular attention is paid to the renormalization of the hybridization vertex which affects the low-energy excitations. As a first example, we calculate the enhanced characteristic energy $k_BT_0$ in the limit of weakly correlated conduction electrons. The metallic regime with strongly correlated electrons is discussed.
We investigate an effect that an ideal Lorenz number $L_{\rm i}$ of correlated metal shows peculiar Fermi surface dependence, which is caused by the onset of a particular channel of Umklapp scattering. We evaluate $L_{\rm i}$ for some simple models and transition metals, and note that $L_{\rm i}$ for Na$_x$CoO$_2$ decreases sensitively as $x$ approaches an Umklapp threshold around $x_c \simeq 0.6$.
De Haas-van Alphen oscillations are studied for Fermi surfaces illustrating the Pippard's model, commonly observed in multiband organic metals. Field- and temperature-dependent amplitude of the various Fourier components, linked to frequency combinations arising from magnetic breakdown between different bands, are considered. Emphasis is put on the Onsager phase factor of these components. It is demonstrated that, in addition to the usual Maslov index, field-dependent phase factors must be considered to precisely account for the data at high magnetic field. We present compelling evidence of th…
Charge-charge, current-current and Raman correlation functions are derived in a consistent way using the unified response theory. The theory is based on the improved description of the conduction electron coupling to the external electromagnetic fields, distinguishing further the direct and indirect (assisted) scattering on the quasi-static disorder. The two scattering channels are distinguished in terms of the energy and momentum conservation laws. The theory is illustrated on the Emery three-band model for the normal state of the underdoped high-$T_c$ cuprates which includes the incoherent e…
We investigated the electronic structures of the 5$d$ Ruddlesden-Popper series Sr$_{n+1}$Ir$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$ ($n$=1, 2, and $\infty$) using optical spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. As 5$d$ orbitals are spatially more extended than 3$d$ or 4$d$ orbitals, it has been widely accepted that correlation effects are minimal in 5$d$ compounds. However, we observed a bandwidth-controlled transition from a Mott insulator to a metal as we increased $n$. In addition, the artificially synthesized perovskite SrIrO$_{3}$ showed a very large mass enhancement of about 6, indicating that it was in…
By applying an unrestricted Hartree-Fock and a Random Phase approximations to a multiband Peierls-Hubbard Hamiltonian, we study the phonon mode structure in models of transition metal oxides in the presence of intrinsic nanoscale inhomogeneities induced by hole doping. We identify low frequency $local$ vibrational modes pinned to the sharp interfaces between regions of distinct electronic structure (doped and undoped) and separated in frequency from the band of extended phonons. A characteristic of these ``edge'' modes is that their energy is essentially insensitive to the doping level. We dis…
In the present paper metal-insulator transition is studied in a generalized Hubbard model with correlated hopping at half-filling and zero temperature. Single-particle Green function and energy spectrum of electron system are calculated. The expressions for energy gap width and the concentration of polar states (holes or doublons) are obtained. The conditions for metallic and insulating states are found.
A general multiband formulation of linear and non-linear optical response functions for realistic models of correlated crystals is presented. Dipole forbidden d-d optical transitions originate from the vertex functions, which we consider assuming locality of irreducible four-leg vertex. The unified formulation for second- and third-order response functions in terms of the three-leg vertex is suitable for practical calculations in solids. We illustrate the general approach by consideration of intraatomic spin-flip contributions, with the energy of 2J, where J is a Hund exchange, in the simplest…
An exact formula for the temperature dependent Hall number of metals is derived. It is valid for non-relativistic fermions or bosons, with arbitrary potential and interaction. This DC transport coefficient is proven to (remarkably) depend solely on equilibrium susceptibilities, which are more amenable to numerical algorithms than the conductivity. An application to strongly correlated phases is demonstrated by calculating the Hall sign in the vicinity of Mott phases of lattice bosons.
In the paper a possibility of metallic ferromagnetic state realization in a generalized Hubbard model with more complete accounting of electron-electron interactions, in particular, the correlated hopping and exchange interaction integrals is investigated. Recently obtained by means of mean-field approximation single electron energy spectrum is used for the description of finite temperature properties of the system. In the paper the expression for the critical temperature of ferromagnet-paramagnet transition is found, the behaviour of temperature dependencies of magnetization and paramagnetic …
This work explores a simple approximation to describe isolated impurity scattering in a strongly correlated metal. The approximation combines conventional one electron scattering theory and the Dynamic Mean Field Theory to describe strong correlations in the host. It becomes exact in several limits, including those of very weak and very strong impurity potentials. Original electronic structure appears at the impurity site when the impurity potential strength is moderate and the host is close to the Mott transition. Our results may provide useful guidance for interpretation of scanning tunnelin…
We have generalized the Gutzwiller method to the cases of n=>2 correlated bands and report studies on a degenerate two-band model with Hund's rule type on-site interactions. At half band filling the metal-insulator transitions are usually of first order.
The temperature dependence of the electron spin life-time, T_1 and the g-factor are anomalous in alkali fullerides (K,Rb)_3C_60, which cannot be explained by the canonical Elliott-Yafet theory. These materials are archetypes of strongly correlated and narrow band metals. We introduce the concept of "complex electron spin resonance frequency shift" to treat these measurables in a unified manner within the Kubo formalism. The theory is applicable for metals with nearly degenerate conduction bands and large momentum scattering even with an anomalous temperature dependence and sizeable residual va…
We derive general closed-form analytical expressions for the finite-energy one- and two-electron spectral-weight distributions of an one-dimensional correlated metal with on-site electronic repulsion. Our results also provide general expressions for the one- and two-atom spectral functions of a correlated quantum system of cold fermionic atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice with on-site atomic repulsion. In the limit of zero spin density our spectral-function expressions provide the correct zero-spin density results. Our results reveal the dominant non-perturbative microscopic many-parti…
Experimental results on the metal-insulator transition and related phenomena in strongly interacting two-dimensional electron systems are discussed. Special attention is given to recent results for the strongly enhanced spin susceptibility, effective mass, and thermopower in low-disordered silicon MOSFETs.
The phase diagram of FeSi1-xGex, obtained from magnetic, thermal and transport measurements on single crystals, shows a first-order transition from a correlated electron semiconductor to a ferromagnetic metal at a critical concentration, x ~ 0.25. The gap of the insulating phase strongly decreases with x. The specific heat coefficient appears to track the density of states of a Kondo insulator. The phase diagram is consistent with a correlation induced insulator-metal transition in conjunction with disorder on the Si/Ge ligand site.
Magnetoresistivity \r{ho}xx and Hall resistivity \r{ho}xy in ultra high magnetic fields up to 88T are measured down to 0.15K to clarify the multiband electronic structure in high-quality single crystals of superconducting FeSe. At low temperatures and high fields we observe quantum oscillations in both resistivity and Hall effect, confirming the multiband Fermi surface with small volumes. We propose a novel and independent approach to identify the sign of corresponding cyclotron orbit in a compensated metal from magnetotransport measurements. The observed significant differences in the relativ…
We discuss the recently proposed LDA'+DMFT approach providing consistent parameter free treatment of the so called double counting problem arising within the LDA+DMFT hybrid computational method for realistic strongly correlated materials. In this approach the local exchange-correlation portion of electron-electron interaction is excluded from self consistent LDA calculations for strongly correlated electronic shells, e.g. d-states of transition metal compounds. Then the corresponding double counting term in LDA+DMFT Hamiltonian is consistently set in the local Hartree (fully localized limit -…
Light-manipulation of correlated electronic phases in solids offers the tantalizing prospect of realizing electronic devices operating at the ultrafast time-scale. In this context, the experimental realization of non-equilibrium transitions from a metal to a band or Mott insulator has shown to be particularly elusive. Using dynamical mean-field theory, we study a simple model representing the main physical properties of the oxygen-enriched compound LaTiO$_{3+x}$. By properly optimizing the photo-doping of electrons from a low-energy band into the valence states of the system, we show it is pos…
The semiclassical description of two-dimensional ($2d$) metals based on the quasiparticle picture suggests that there is a universal threshold of the resistivity: the resistivity of a $2d$ metal is bounded by the so called Mott-Ioffe-Regal (MIR) limit, which is at the order of $h/e^2$. If a system remains metallic while its resistivity is beyond the MIR limit, it is referred to as a "bad metal", which challenges our theoretical understanding as the very notion of quasiparticles is invalidated. The description of the system becomes even more challenging when there is also strong correlation bet…
We develop the Ginzburg - Landau theory of the upper critical field in the basal plane of a tetragonal multiband metal in two-component superconducting state. It is shown that typical for the two component superconducting state the upper critical field basal plane anisotropy and the phase transition splitting still exist in a multiband case. However, the value of anisotropy can be effectively smaller than in the single band case. The results are discussed in the application to the superconducting Sr2RuO4.
We describe a variational calculation for the problem of screening of a point charge in a layered correlated metal for dopings close to the Mott transition where the screening is non-linear due to the proximity to the incompressible insulating state. We find that external charge can induce locally incompressible regions and that the non-linear dependence of the screening on density can induce overscreening in the nearest nearby layers while preserving overall charge neutrality.
Recently, application of electric field (E-field) has received considerable attention as a new method to induce novel quantum phenomena since application of E-field can tune the electronic states directly with obvious scientific and industrial advantages over other turning methods. However, E-field-induced Mott transitions are rare and typically require high E-field and low temperature. Here we report that the multiband Mott insulator Ca2RuO4 shows unique insulator-metal switching induced by applying a dry-battery level voltage at room temperature. The threshold field Eth ~40 V/cm is much weak…
We study the Hubbard model with bond-charge interaction (`correlated hopping') in terms of the Gutzwiller wave function. We show how to express the Gutzwiller expectation value of the bond-charge interaction in terms of the correlated momentum-space occupation. This relation is valid in all spatial dimensions. We find that in infinite dimensions, where the Gutzwiller approximation becomes exact, the bond-charge interaction lowers the critical Hubbard interaction for the Brinkman-Rice metal-insulator transition. The bond-charge interaction also favors ferromagnetic transitions, especially if th…
Experimental evidence for the possible universality classes of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in two dimensions (2D) is discussed. Sufficiently strong disorder, in particular, changes the nature of the transition. Comprehensive studies of the charge dynamics are also reviewed, describing evidence that the MIT in a 2D electron system in silicon should be viewed as the melting of the Coulomb glass. Comparisons are made to recent results on novel 2D materials and quasi-2D strongly correlated systems, such as cuprates.
In order to investigate photoinduced insulator-metal transitions observed in correlated electron systems, we propose a new theoretical method, where we combine a Floquet-matrix method for AC-driven systems with the dynamical mean-field theory. The method can treat nonequilibrium steady states exactly beyond the linear-response regime. We have applied the method to the Falicov-Kimball model coupled to AC electric fields, and numerically obtained the spectral function, the nonequilibrium distribution function and the current-voltage characteristic. The results show that intense AC fields indeed …
The correlated Kondo-lattice model is used to describe the interaction of electrons in a single conduction band with localized magnetic moments as well as their mutual repulsion. It is our intension to provide an analytical exact result for this model by considering a two-site cluster. An equation-of-motion approach as well as the spectral theorem is chosen to obtain the complete expression for the one-particle Green's function. In a forgoing article the problem has been solved for an insulator, the present paper is devoted to the technical more demanding task of a metal.
