Motivated by recent experimental realizations of polar metals with broken inversion symmetry, we explore the emergence of strong correlations driven by criticality when the polar transition temperature is tuned to zero. Overcoming previously discussed challenges, we demonstrate a robust mechanism for coupling between the critical mode and electrons in multiband metals. We identify and characterize several novel interacting phases, including non-Fermi liquids, when band crossings are close to the Fermi level and present their experimental signatures for three generic types of band crossings.
We study the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice in the vicinity of the quantum critical point by means of a multiband formulation of the Dual Fermion approach. Beyond the strong local correlations of the dynamical mean field, critical fluctuations on all length scales are included by means of a ladder diagram summation. Analysis of the susceptibility yields an estimate of the critical interaction strength of the quantum phase transition from a paramagnetic semimetal to an antiferromagnetic insulator, in good agreement to other numerical methods. We further estimate the crossover temperatur…
New thermoelectric power (TEP) measurements on prototype heavy-fermion compounds close to magnetic quantum criticality are presented. The highly sensitive technique of TEP is an unique tool to reveal Fermi surface instabilities, referred here as Lifshitz transitions. The first focus is on the Ising CeRu2Si2 series. Doping CeRu2Si2 with Rh produces a decoupling between the first order metamagnetic transition and the pseudo-metamagnetism observed in the pure compound. Comparison is made with the case of YbRh2Si2 which is often considered as the archetype of local quantum criticality by contrast …
Low density two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) with spin-orbit coupling are highly sensitive to an in-plane magnetic field, which impacts their Fermi surfaces and transport properties. Such 2DEGs, formed at transition metal oxide surfaces or interfaces, can also undergo surface phase transitions leading to polar metals which exhibit electronic nematicity. Motivated by experiments on such systems, we theoretically study magnetotransport in $t_{2g}$ orbital systems, using Hamiltonians which include atomic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and broken inversion symmetry, for both square symmetry (001)…
We report detailed dc and ac magnetic susceptibilities, specific heat, and thermal conductivity measurements on the frustrated magnet ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$. At low temperatures, with increasing magnetic field, this spinel material goes through a series of spin state transitions from the helix spin state to the spiral spin state and then to the fully polarized state. Our results indicate a direct quantum phase transition from the spiral spin state to the fully polarized state. As the system approaches the quantum criticality, we find strong quantum fluctuations of the spins with the behaviors such as …
The stability of the magnetization $m=1/3$ plateau phase of the XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with competing interactions is investigated upon switching on a staggered transverse magnetic field. Within a bosonization approach, it is shown that the low-energy properties of the model are described by an effective two-dimensional XY model in a three-fold symmetry-breaking field. A phase transition in the three-state Potts universality class is expected separating the $m=1/3$ plateau phase to a phase where the spins are polarized along the staggered magnetic field. The Z$_3$ critical properties of…
We report on zero-field muon spin rotation, electron spin resonance and polarized Raman scattering measurements of the coupled quantum spin ladder Ba2CuTeO6. Zero-field muon spin rotation and electron spin resonance probes disclose a successive crossover from a paramagnetic through a spin-liquid-like into a magnetically ordered state with decreasing temperature. More significantly, the two-magnon Raman response obeys a T-linear scaling relation in its peak energy, linewidth and intensity. This critical scaling behavior presents an experimental signature of proximity to a quantum critical point…
Exchange interactions between $S=\frac{1}{2}$ sites in piperazinium hexachlorodicuprate produce a frustrated bilayer magnet with a singlet ground state. We have determined the field-temperature phase diagram by high field magnetization and neutron scattering experiments. There are two quantum critical points: $H_{c1}=7.5$ T separates a quantum paramagnet phase from a three dimensional, antiferromagnetically-ordered state while $H_{c2}=37$ T marks the onset of a fully polarized state. The ordered phase, which we describe as a magnon Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), is embedded in a quantum criti…
The quantum phase transition between the low-field fracton phase with type-II fracton excitations and the high-field polarized phase is investigated in the two-dimensional self-dual quantum Newman-Moore model. We apply perturbative and numerical linked-cluster expansions to calculate the ground-state energy per site in the thermodynamic limit revealing a level crossing at the self-dual point. In addition, high-order series expansions of the relevant low-energy gaps are determined using perturbative continuous unitary transformations indicating no gap-closing. Our results therefore predict a fi…
The critical breakdown of a one-dimensional quantum magnet with long-range interactions is studied by investigating the high-field polarized phase of the anisotropic XY model in a transverse field for the ferro- and antiferromagnetic case. While for the limiting case of the isotropic long-range XY model we can extract the elementary one quasi-particle dispersion analytically and calculate two quasi-particle excitation energies quantitatively in a numerical fashion, for the long-range Ising limit as well as in the intermediate regime we use perturbative continuous unitary transformations on whi…
Tris-sarcosine calcium chloride (TSCC) is a highly uniaxial ferroelectric with a Curie temperature of approximately 130K. By suppressing ferroelectricity with bromine substitution on the chlorine sites, pure single crystals were tuned through a ferroelectric quantum phase transition. The resulting quantum critical regime was investigated in detail - the first time for a uniaxial ferroelectric and for an organic ferroelectric - and was found to persist up to temperatures of at least 30K to 40K. The nature of long-range dipole interactions in uniaxial materials, which lead to non-analytical term…
Dynamically driven interacting quantum many-body systems have the potential to exhibit properties that defy the laws of equilibrium statistical mechanics. A widely studied model is the impulsively driven antiferromagnetic Mott insulator, which is predicted to realize exotic transient phenomena including dynamical phase transitions into thermally forbidden states and highly non-thermal magnon distributions. However such far-from-equilibrium regimes, where conventional time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau descriptions fail, are experimentally challenging to prepare and to probe especially in solid sta…
To gain a better understanding of the interplay between frustrated long-range interactions and zero-temperature quantum fluctuations, we investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the transverse-field Ising model with algebraically-decaying long-range Ising interactions on quasi one-dimensional infinite-cylinder triangular lattices. Technically, we apply various approaches including low- and high-field series expansions. For the classical long-range Ising model, we investigate cylinders with an arbitrary even circumference. We show the occurrence of gapped stripe-ordered phases emerging out…
The competition between intertube hopping processes and density-density interactions is investigated in one-dimensional quantum dipolar bosons systems of N coupled tubes at zero temperature. Using a phenomenological bosonization approach, we show that the resulting competition leads to an exotic quantum phase transition described by a U(1) x Z_N conformal field theory with a fractional central charge. The emerging Z_N parafermionic critical degrees of freedom are highly nontrivial in terms of the original atoms or polar molecules of the model. We further determine the main physical properties …
The free fermion nature of interacting spins in one dimensional (1D) spin chains still lacks a rigorous study. In this letter we show that the length-$1$ spin strings significantly dominate critical properties of spinons, magnons and free fermions in the 1D antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain. Using the Bethe ansatz solution we analytically calculate exact scaling functions of thermal and magnetic properties of the model, providing a rigorous understanding of the quantum criticality of spinons. It turns out that the double peaks in specific heat elegantly mark two crossover temperatures fanning o…

Materials tuned to the neighbourhood of a zero temperature phase transition often show the emergence of novel quantum phenomena. Much of the effort to study these new effects, like the breakdown of the conventional Fermi-liquid theory of metals has been focused in narrow band electronic systems. Ferroelectric crystals provide a very different type of quantum criticality that arises purely from the crystalline lattice. In many cases the ferroelectric phase can be tuned to absolute zero using hydrostatic pressure or chemical or isotopic substitution. Close to such a zero temperature phase transi…
Superconductivity in low carrier density metals challenges the conventional electron-phonon theory due to the absence of retardation required to overcome Coulomb repulsion. In quantum critical polar metals, the Coulomb repulsion is heavily screened, while the critical transverse optic phonons decouple from the electron charge. In the resulting vacuum, the residual interactions between quasiparticles are carried by energy fluctuations of the polar medium, resembling the gravitational interactions of a dark matter universe. Here we demonstrate that pairing inevitably emerges from "gravitational'…
To gain insight into the physics of the metal insulator transition and the effectiveness of cluster dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) we have used one, two and four site dynamical mean field theory to solve a polaron model of electrons coupled to a classical phonon field. The cluster size dependence of the metal to polaronic insulator phase boundary is determined along with electron spectral functions and cluster correlation functions. Pronounced cluster size effects start to occur in the intermediate coupling region in which the cluster calculation leads to a gap and the single-site approxim…
