We present an improved version of our original cosmological model to explain the current phase of cosmological acceleration without resorting to a cosmological constant or any other mass scale. Like the original, this phenomenological approach is based on an effective quantum gravitational action, but now depends on the original nonlocal dimensionless scalar $X = \square^{-1} R$ only through $Y = \square^{-1} g^{μν} X_{,μ} X_{,ν}$. Both $X$ and $Y$ are quiescent during the radiation-dominated ($R=0$) era, both only grow logarithmically during matter dominance, and neither affects the propagation of gravitational radiation. However, while $X$ has the same sign for gravitationally bound systems as for cosmology, we show that the sign of $Y$ differs for the two cases: it is positive for cosmology and negative for strongly gravitationally bound systems. We can therefore enforce the $Λ$CDM expansion history by making a suitable choice of the nonlocal distortion function $f(Y)$ for $Y > 0$, while ensuring that there is no change in the heavily constrained solar system phenomenology simply by making $f$ vanish for $Y < 0$ without discontinuity. The required $f(Y>0)$ is determined numerically to have a strikingly simple exponential form.
We explore some of the cosmological implications of the recent classical nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation in which nonlocality is due to the gravitational memory of past events. In the Newtonian regime of this theory, the nonlocal character of gravity simulates dark matter in spiral galaxies and clusters of galaxies. However, dark matter is considered indispensable as well for structure formation in standard models of cosmology. Can nonlocal gravity solve the problem of structure formation without recourse to dark matter? Here we make a beginning in this direction by…
Even though it is not possible to differentiate General Relativity from Teleparallel Gravity using classical experiments, it could be possible to discriminate between them by quantum gravitational effects. These effects have motivated the introduction of nonlocal deformations of General Relativity, and similar effects are also expected to occur in Teleparallel Gravity. Here, we study nonlocal deformations of Teleparallel Gravity along with its cosmological solutions. We observe that Nonlocal Teleparallel Gravity (like nonlocal General Relativity) is consistent with the present cosmological dat…
We show that a class of nonlocal gravity models, proposed to explain current cosmic acceleration without dark energy, passes two major tests: First, they can be defined so as not to alter the, observationally correct, general relativity predictions for gravitationally bound systems. Second, they are stable, ghost-free, with no additional excitations beyond those of general relativity. In this they differ from their, ghostful, localized versions. The systems' initial value constraints are the same as in general relativity, and our nonlocal modifications never convert the original gravitons into…
Despite many nice properties and numerous achievements, general relativity is not a complete theory. One of actual approaches towards more complete theory of gravity is its nonlocal modification. We present here a brief review of nonlocal gravity with its cosmological solutions. In particular, we pay special attention to two nonlocal models and their nonsingular bounce solutions for the cosmic scale factor.
We consider the cosmology of modified gravity models in which Newton's constant is distorted by a function of the inverse d'Alembertian acting on the Ricci scalar. We derive a technique for choosing the distortion function so as to fit an arbitrary expansion history. This technique is applied numerically to the case of LambdaCDM cosmology, and the result agrees well with a simple hyperbolic tangent.
Nonlocal models of cosmology might derive from graviton loop corrections to the effective field equations from the epoch of primordial inflation. Although the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism would automatically produce causal and conserved effective field equations, the models so far proposed have been purely phenomenological. Two techniques have been employed to generate causal and conserved field equations: either varying an invariant nonlocal effective action and then enforcing causality by the ad hoc replacement of any advanced Green's function with its retarded counterpart, or else introducin…
We consider a class of nonlocal, pure-metric modified gravity models which were developed to reproduce the Tully-Fisher relation without dark matter and without changing the amount of weak lensing predicted by general relativity. Previous work gave only the weak field limiting form of the field equations specialized to a static and spherically symmetric geometry. Here we derive the full field equations and specialize them to a homogeneous, isotropic and spatially flat geometry. We also discuss the problem of fitting the free function to reproduce the expansion history. Results are derived for …
Heuristic approaches in cosmology bypass more difficult calculations that would more strictly agree with the standard Einstein equation. These give us the well-known Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) models, and, more recently, the feedback effect of the global topology of spatial sections on the acceleration of test particles. Forcing the FLRW heuristic model on observations leads to dark energy, which, pending fully relativistic calculations, is best interpreted as an artefact. Could topological acceleration also be an artefact of using a heuristic approach? A multiply connected exa…
We present extensions of the treatment contained in our recent paper on nonlocal Newtonian cosmology [C. Chicone and B. Mashhoon, J. Math. Phys. 57, 072501 (2016)]. That is, the implications of the recent nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation are further investigated within the regime of Newtonian cosmology. In particular, we treat the nonlocal problem of structure formation for a spherically symmetric expanding dust model and show numerically that as the central density contrast grows, it tends to decrease slowly with radial distance as the universe expands. The nonlocal…
The effects of noncommutativity on the phase space of a dilatonic cosmological model is investigated. The existence of such noncommutativity results in a deformed Poisson algebra between the minisuperspace variables and their momenta conjugate. For an exponential dilaton potential, the exact solutions in the commutative and noncommutative cases, are presented and compared. We use these solutions to address the late time acceleration issue of cosmic evolution.
We discuss two nonlocal models of electrodynamics in which the nonlocality is induced by the acceleration of the observer. Such an observer actually measures an electromagnetic field that exhibits persistent memory effects. We compare Mashhoon's model with a new ansatz developed here in the framework of charge & flux electrodynamics with a constitutive law involving the Levi-Civita connection as seen from the observer's local frame and conclude that they are in partial agreement only for the case of constant acceleration.
We investigate late time acceleration of the universe in higher dimensional cosmology. The content in the universe is assumed to exert pressure which is different in the normal and extra dimensions. Cosmologically viable solutions are found to exist for simple forms of the equation of state. The parameters of the model are fixed by comparing the predictions with supernovae data. While observations stipulate that the matter exerts almost vanishing pressure in the normal dimensions, we assume that, in the extra dimensions, the equation of state is of the form $P \propto \, ρ^{1 - γ}$. For approp…

The standard relativistic theory of accelerated reference frames in Minkowski spacetime is described. The measurements of accelerated observers are considered and the limitations of the standard theory, based on the hypothesis of locality, are pointed out. The physical principles of the nonlocal theory of accelerated observers are presented. The implications of the nonlocal theory are briefly discussed.
Nonlocal quantum corrections to gravity have been recently proposed as a possible solution to the cosmological fine tuning problems. We study the dynamics of a class of nonlocal actions defined by a function of the inverse d'Alembertian of the Ricci scalar. Power-law and expnential functions are considered in detail, but we also show a method to reconstruct a nonlocal correction that generates a given background expansion. We find that even the simplest terms can, while involving only Planck scale constants, drive the late time acceleration without changing early cosmology. This leads to a sud…
I review a class of nonlocally modified gravity models which were proposed to explain the current phase of cosmic acceleration without dark energy. Among the topics considered are deriving causal and conserved field equations, adjusting the model to make it support a given expansion history, why these models do not require an elaborate screening mechanism to evade solar system tests, degrees of freedom and kinetic stability, and the negative verdict of structure formation. Although these simple models are not consistent with data on the growth of cosmic structures many of their features are li…
The possibility that the strength of gravitational interactions might slowly increase with distance, is explored by formulating a set of effective field equations, which incorporate the gravitational, vacuum-polarization induced, running of Newton's constant $G$. The resulting long distance (or large time) behaviour depends on only one adjustable parameter $ξ$, and the implications for the Robertson-Walker universe are calculated, predicting an accelerated power-law expansion at later times $t \sim ξ\sim 1/H$.
Current cosmological observations, when interpreted within the framework of a homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) model, strongly suggest that the Universe is entering a period of accelerating expansion. This is often taken to mean that the expansion of space itself is accelerating. In a general spacetime, however, this is not necessarily true. We attempt to clarify this point by considering a handful of local and non-local measures of acceleration in a variety of inhomogeneous cosmological models. Each of the chosen measures corresponds to a theoretical or obs…
We consider the problem of uniqueness of the kernel in the nonlocal theory of accelerated observers. In a recent work, we showed that the convolution kernel is ruled out as it can lead to divergences for nonuniform accelerated motion. Here we determine the general form of bounded continuous kernels and use observational data regarding spin-rotation coupling to argue that the kinetic kernel given by $K(τ,τ')=k(τ')$ is the only physically acceptable solution.
We revisit acceleration-induced nonlocal electrodynamics and the phenomenon of photon spin-rotation coupling. The kernel of the theory for the electromagnetic field tensor involves parity violation under the assumption of linearity of the field kernel in the acceleration tensor. However, we show that parity conservation can be maintained by extending the field kernel to include quadratic terms in the acceleration tensor. The field kernel must vanish in the absence of acceleration; otherwise, a general dependence of the kernel on the acceleration tensor cannot be theoretically excluded. The phy…
We investigate the dynamics of a Bianchi I brane Universe in the presence of a nonlocal anisotropic stress ${\cal P}_{μν}$ proportional to a "dark energy" ${\cal U}$. Using this ansatz for the case ${\cal U} > 0$ we prove that if a matter on a brane satisfies the equation of state $p=(γ-1)ρ$ with $γ\le 4/3$ then all such models isotropize. For $γ> 4/3$ anisotropic future asymptotic states are found. We also describe the past asymptotic regimes for this model.
We numerically determine the cosmological branch of the free function in a nonlocal metric-based modification of gravity which provides a relativistic generalization of Milgrom's Modified Newtonian Dynamics. We are able to reproduce the $Λ$CDM expansion history over virtually all of cosmic history, including the era of radiation domination during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, the era of matter domination during Recombination, and most of the era of vacuum energy domination. The very late period of $0 \leq z < 0.0880$, during which the model deviates from the $Λ$CDM expansion history, is interestin…
We explore nonlocally modified models of gravity, inspired by quantum loop corrections, as a mechanism for explaining current cosmic acceleration. These theories enjoy two major advantages: they allow a delayed response to cosmic events, here the transition from radiation to matter dominance, and they avoid the usual level of fine tuning; instead, emulating Dirac's dictum, the required large numbers come from the large time scales involved. Their solar system effects are safely negligible, and they may even prove useful to the black hole information problem.
Understanding the space of possible theoretical explanations for the observed cosmic acceleration is a central challenge of modern cosmology. This brief document sketches selected aspects of approaches to this problem, focusing on the possibility that a modification to General Relativity is responsible for acceleration, as presented as a plenary talk at the ICHEP 2012 conference.
The effects of phase space deformations on Kalutza-Klein cosmology are studied. The deformation is introduced by modifying the symplectic structure of the minisuperspace variables. In the deformed model, we find an accelerating scale factor and therefore infer the existence of an effective cosmological constant from the phase space deformation parameter $β$.
In this paper we demonstrate that with vacuum $F(G)$ gravity it is possible to describe the unification of late and early-time acceleration eras with the radiation and matter domination era. The Hubble rate of the unified evolution contains two mild singularities, so called Type IV singularities, and the evolution itself has some appealing features, such as the existence of a deceleration-acceleration transition at late times. We also address quantitatively a fundamental question related to modified gravity models description of cosmological evolution: Is it possible for all modified gravity d…
A method for the search of exact solutions for equation of a nonlocal scalar field in a non-flat metric is considered. In the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric the proposed method can be used in the case of an arbitrary potential, with the exception of linear and quadratic potentials, and allows to get in quadratures solutions, which depend on two arbitrary parameters. Exact solutions have been found for an arbitrary cubic potential, which consideration is motivated by the string field theory, as well as for exponential, logarithmic and power potentials. It has been shown that one can add the …
We consider Brans-Dicke theory with a self-interacting potential in Einstein conformal frame. We show that an accelerating expansion is possible in a spatially flat universe for large values of the Brans-Dicke parameter consistent with local gravity experiments.
An analytic approach to phenomenological models inspired by cubic string field theory is introduced and applied to some examples. We study a class of actions for a minimally coupled, homogeneous scalar field whose energy density contains infinitely many time derivatives. These nonlocal systems are systematically localized and an algorithm to find cosmological solutions of the dynamical equations is provided. Our formalism is able to define the nonlocal field in regions of the parameter space which are inaccessible by standard methods. Also, problems related to nonlocality are reinterpreted und…
A certain class of nonlocal theories eliminates an arbitrary cosmological constant (CC) from a universe that can be perceived as our world. Dark energy then cannot be explained by a CC; it could however be due to massive gravity. We calculate the new corrections, which originate from the nonlocal terms that eliminate the CC, to the decoupling limit Lagrangian of massive gravity. The new nonlocal terms also have internal field space Galilean symmetry and are referred here as "nonlocal Galileons." We then study a self-accelerated solution and show that the new nonlocal terms change the perturbat…
One possibility for explaining the apparent accelerating expansion of the universe is that we live in the center of a spherically inhomogeneous universe. Although current observations cannot fully distinguish $Λ$CDM and these inhomogeneous models, direct measurement of the acceleration of the universe can be a powerful tool in probing them. We have shown that, if $Λ$CDM is the correct model, DECIGO/BBO would be able to detect the positive redshift drift (which is the time evolution of the source redshift $z$) in 3--5 year gravitational wave (GW) observations from neutron-star binaries, which e…
Strong long-scale gravitational waves can explain cosmic acceleration within the context of general relativity without resorting to the assumption of exotic forms of matter such as quintessence. The existence of these gravitational waves in sufficient strength to cause observed acceleration can be compatible with the cosmic microwave background under reasonable physical circumstances. An instance of the Bianchi IX cosmology is demonstrated which also explains the alignment of low-order multipoles observed in the CMB. The model requires a closed cosmology but is otherwise not strongly constrain…
A Friedmann like cosmological model in Einstein-Cartan framework is studied when the torsion function is assumed to be proportional to a single $ϕ(t)$ function coming just from the spin vector contribution of ordinary matter. By analysing four different types of torsion function written in terms of one, two and three free parameters, we found that a model with $ϕ(t)=- αH(t) \big({ρ_{m}(t)}/{ρ_{0c}}\big)^n$ is totally compatible with recent cosmological data, where $α$ and $n$ are free parameters to be constrained from observations, $ρ_m$ is the matter energy density and $ρ_{0c}$ the critical d…
The Deser-Woodard (DW) nonlocal gravity model has been proposed in order to describe the late-time acceleration of the universe without introducing dark energy. In this paper we focus, however, on the early stage of the universe and demonstrate how a primordial bounce in the vacuum spacetime can be realized in the framework of the DW nonlocal model. We reconstruct the nonlocal distortion function, which encodes all the modifications to the Einstein-Hilbert action, in order to generate bouncing solutions to solve the initial singularity problem. We show that the initial conditions can be chosen…
NMDC-Palatini cosmology in slow-roll regime is of our interests. We present flat FLRW cosmological NMDC-Palatini field equations and acceleration condition. Late time trajectory is approximated. Chaotic inflation potential is considered here as it is viable in a range of positive coupling constant as constrained by CMB results. Phase portraits show that the NMDC-Palatini gives new saddle-point solutions. In $V \propto ϕ^2$ potential, the NMDC-Palatini effect enlarges the acceleration-allowed region from that of GR case.
We consider spatially homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) solutions of Milgrom's recently proposed class of bimetric theories of gravity. These theories have two different regimes, corresponding to high and low acceleration. We find simple power-law matter dominated solutions in both, as well as solutions with spatial curvature, and exponentially expanding solutions. In the high acceleration limit these solutions behave like the FRW solutions of General Relativity, with a cosmological constant term that is of the correct order of magnitude to explain the observed acceler…
In order to investigate more features of the Brans-Dicke cosmology in the five-dimensional space-time, we explore the solutions of its dynamiacal systems. A behavior of the universe in its early and late time by means of the scale factor is considered. As a results, we show that it is possible to avoid the big rip singularity and to cross the phantom divide line. Furthermore, we review the dark energy component of the universe and its agreement with the observation data for this 3-brane Brans Dicke cosmology by means of the cosmological parameters.
This paper contains a collection of essays on nonlocal phenomena in quantum field theory, gravity and cosmology. Mechanisms of nonlocal contributions to the quantum effective action are discussed within the covariant perturbation expansion in field strengths and spacetime curvatures and the nonperturbative method based on the late time asymptotics of the heat kernel. Euclidean version of the Schwinger-Keldysh technique for quantum expectation values is presented as a special rule of obtaining the nonlocal effective equations of motion for the mean quantum field from the Euclidean effective act…
A class of Einstein-dilaton-axion models is found for which almost all flat expanding homogeneous and isotropic universes undergo recurrent periods of acceleration. We also extend recent results on eternally accelerating open universes.
Parameters that quantify the acceleration of cosmic expansion are conventionally determined within the standard Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) model, which fixes spatial curvature to be homogeneous. Generic averages of Einstein's equations in inhomogeneous cosmology lead to models with non-rigidly evolving average spatial curvature, and different parametrizations of apparent cosmic acceleration. The timescape cosmology is a viable example of such a model without dark energy. Using the largest available supernova data set, the JLA catalogue, we find that the timescape model fits the…
We investigate the features of the cosmological expansion history described by a recent model of gravity characterised by two nonlocally interacting metrics. We perform a detailed analysis of the dynamical system formed by the field equations and we find no stable critical points at finite and infinite distance. Nonetheless, we show that even if the universe does not evolve towards a de Sitter attractor, the effective equation of state parameter $ω_{\rm eff}$ always tends to $-1$, independently from the value of the free parameter $m^2$, which characterises the nonlocality of the theory. We al…
We study the consequences of the $f(R/\Box)$ gravity models for the Solar system and the large scale structure of the universe. The spherically symmetric solutions can be used to obtain bounds on the constant and the linear parts of the correction terms. The evolution of cosmological matter structures is shown to be governed by an effective time dependent Newton's constant. We also analyze the propagation of the perturbation modes. Tensor and vector modes are only slightly modified, but two new scalar degrees of freedom are present. Their causality and stability is demonstrated, and their form…
We show that the general solution of scalar field cosmology in $d$ dimensions with exponential potentials for flat Robertson-Walker metric can be found in a straightforward way by introducing new variables which completely decouple the system. The explicit solution shows the region of parameters where the expansion has eternal acceleration, transient periods of acceleration, or no period of acceleration at all. In the cases of transient acceleration, the energy density exhibits a plateau during the accelerated expansion, where $p\cong -ρ$, due to dominance of potential energy. We determine the…
We consider a nonlocal gravity model motivated by nonperturbative Quantum Gravity studies. This model, if correct, suggests the existence of strong IR relevant effects which can lead to an interesting late time cosmology. We implement the IR modification directly in the effective action. We show that, upon some assumptions on initial conditions, this model describes an observationally viable background cosmology being also consistent with local gravity tests.
We analyze the cosmological solutions to the recently proposed nonlocal quantum effective action for gravity with a cosmological term. We show that the vacuum energy decays with a slow-roll parameter proportional to the anomalous gravitational dressings.
It is well known that string theories naturally compactify on anti-de Sitter spaces, and yet cosmological observations show no evidence of a negative cosmological constant in the early Universe's evolution. In this letter we present two simple nonlocal modifications of the standard Friedmann cosmology that can lead to observationally viable cosmologies with an initial (negative) cosmological constant. The nonlocal operators we include are toy models for the quantum cosmological backreaction. In Model I an initial quasiperiodic oscillatory epoch is followed by inflation and a late time matter e…
Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) model is recently restudied in order to analyze new consequences in gravitation, modifying appropriately the Einstein-Hilbert action. The consequences in EGB cosmology are mainly geometric, with higher order values in the Hubble parameter. In this vein this paper is devoted to contribute with extra evidences about its pros and cons of the model from a cosmological point of view. We start constraining the characteristic parameter, $α$, of the EGB model when a cosmological constant as the catalyst for the acceleration is considered. The constrictions are developed at …
We review the fundamental results of a new cosmological model, based on conformal gravity, and apply them to the analysis of the early data of the Pioneer anomaly. We show that our conformal cosmology can naturally explain the anomalous acceleration of the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft, in terms of a local blueshift region extending around the solar system and therefore affecting the frequencies of the navigational radio signals exchanged between Earth and the spacecraft. On the contrary, conformal gravity corrections alone would not be able to account for dynamical effects of such magnitude to…
This is a short overview of spatially flat (or open) four-dimensional accelerating cosmologies for some simple exponential potentials obtained by string or M theory compactification on some non-trivial curved spaces, which may lead to some striking results, e.g., the observed cosmic acceleration and the scale of the dark energy from first principles.
Holography is expected as one of the promising descriptions of quantum general relativity. We present a model for a cosmological system involving two holographic screens and find that their equilibrium exactly yields a standard Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. We discuss its cosmological implications by taking into account higher order quantum corrections and quantum nature of horizon evaporation. We will show that this model could give rise to a holographic inflation at high energy scales and realize a late-time acceleration in a unified approach. We test our model from the SN Ia observat…
Brane cosmology presents many interesting possibilities including: phantom acceleration (w<-1), self-acceleration, unification of dark energy with inflation, transient acceleration, loitering cosmology, new singularities at which the Hubble parameter remains finite, cosmic mimicry, etc. The existence of a time-like extra dimension can result in a singularity-free cyclic cosmology.
We propose a simple, nonlocal modification to general relativity (GR) on large scales, which provides a model of late-time cosmic acceleration in the absence of the cosmological constant and with the same number of free parameters as in standard cosmology. The model is motivated by adding to the gravity sector an extra spin-2 field interacting nonlocally with the physical metric coupled to matter. The form of the nonlocal interaction is inspired by the simplest form of the Deser-Woodard (DW) model, $αR\frac{1}{\Box}R$, with one of the Ricci scalars being replaced by a constant $m^{2}$, and gra…
