We investigate late time acceleration of the universe in higher dimensional cosmology. The content in the universe is assumed to exert pressure which is different in the normal and extra dimensions. Cosmologically viable solutions are found to exist for simple forms of the equation of state. The parameters of the model are fixed by comparing the predictions with supernovae data. While observations stipulate that the matter exerts almost vanishing pressure in the normal dimensions, we assume that, in the extra dimensions, the equation of state is of the form $P \propto \, ρ^{1 - γ}$. For appropriate choice of parameters, a late time acceleration in the universe occurs with $q_0$ and $z_{tr}$ being approximately -0.46 and 0.76 respectively.
Heuristic approaches in cosmology bypass more difficult calculations that would more strictly agree with the standard Einstein equation. These give us the well-known Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) models, and, more recently, the feedback effect of the global topology of spatial sections on the acceleration of test particles. Forcing the FLRW heuristic model on observations leads to dark energy, which, pending fully relativistic calculations, is best interpreted as an artefact. Could topological acceleration also be an artefact of using a heuristic approach? A multiply connected exa…
The effects of noncommutativity on the phase space of a dilatonic cosmological model is investigated. The existence of such noncommutativity results in a deformed Poisson algebra between the minisuperspace variables and their momenta conjugate. For an exponential dilaton potential, the exact solutions in the commutative and noncommutative cases, are presented and compared. We use these solutions to address the late time acceleration issue of cosmic evolution.
Current cosmological observations, when interpreted within the framework of a homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) model, strongly suggest that the Universe is entering a period of accelerating expansion. This is often taken to mean that the expansion of space itself is accelerating. In a general spacetime, however, this is not necessarily true. We attempt to clarify this point by considering a handful of local and non-local measures of acceleration in a variety of inhomogeneous cosmological models. Each of the chosen measures corresponds to a theoretical or obs…
The effects of phase space deformations on Kalutza-Klein cosmology are studied. The deformation is introduced by modifying the symplectic structure of the minisuperspace variables. In the deformed model, we find an accelerating scale factor and therefore infer the existence of an effective cosmological constant from the phase space deformation parameter $β$.
Understanding the space of possible theoretical explanations for the observed cosmic acceleration is a central challenge of modern cosmology. This brief document sketches selected aspects of approaches to this problem, focusing on the possibility that a modification to General Relativity is responsible for acceleration, as presented as a plenary talk at the ICHEP 2012 conference.
We consider Brans-Dicke theory with a self-interacting potential in Einstein conformal frame. We show that an accelerating expansion is possible in a spatially flat universe for large values of the Brans-Dicke parameter consistent with local gravity experiments.
We present an improved version of our original cosmological model to explain the current phase of cosmological acceleration without resorting to a cosmological constant or any other mass scale. Like the original, this phenomenological approach is based on an effective quantum gravitational action, but now depends on the original nonlocal dimensionless scalar $X = \square^{-1} R$ only through $Y = \square^{-1} g^{μν} X_{,μ} X_{,ν}$. Both $X$ and $Y$ are quiescent during the radiation-dominated ($R=0$) era, both only grow logarithmically during matter dominance, and neither affects the propagati…
In this paper we demonstrate that with vacuum $F(G)$ gravity it is possible to describe the unification of late and early-time acceleration eras with the radiation and matter domination era. The Hubble rate of the unified evolution contains two mild singularities, so called Type IV singularities, and the evolution itself has some appealing features, such as the existence of a deceleration-acceleration transition at late times. We also address quantitatively a fundamental question related to modified gravity models description of cosmological evolution: Is it possible for all modified gravity d…
NMDC-Palatini cosmology in slow-roll regime is of our interests. We present flat FLRW cosmological NMDC-Palatini field equations and acceleration condition. Late time trajectory is approximated. Chaotic inflation potential is considered here as it is viable in a range of positive coupling constant as constrained by CMB results. Phase portraits show that the NMDC-Palatini gives new saddle-point solutions. In $V \propto ϕ^2$ potential, the NMDC-Palatini effect enlarges the acceleration-allowed region from that of GR case.
One possibility for explaining the apparent accelerating expansion of the universe is that we live in the center of a spherically inhomogeneous universe. Although current observations cannot fully distinguish $Λ$CDM and these inhomogeneous models, direct measurement of the acceleration of the universe can be a powerful tool in probing them. We have shown that, if $Λ$CDM is the correct model, DECIGO/BBO would be able to detect the positive redshift drift (which is the time evolution of the source redshift $z$) in 3--5 year gravitational wave (GW) observations from neutron-star binaries, which e…
Strong long-scale gravitational waves can explain cosmic acceleration within the context of general relativity without resorting to the assumption of exotic forms of matter such as quintessence. The existence of these gravitational waves in sufficient strength to cause observed acceleration can be compatible with the cosmic microwave background under reasonable physical circumstances. An instance of the Bianchi IX cosmology is demonstrated which also explains the alignment of low-order multipoles observed in the CMB. The model requires a closed cosmology but is otherwise not strongly constrain…
A Friedmann like cosmological model in Einstein-Cartan framework is studied when the torsion function is assumed to be proportional to a single $ϕ(t)$ function coming just from the spin vector contribution of ordinary matter. By analysing four different types of torsion function written in terms of one, two and three free parameters, we found that a model with $ϕ(t)=- αH(t) \big({ρ_{m}(t)}/{ρ_{0c}}\big)^n$ is totally compatible with recent cosmological data, where $α$ and $n$ are free parameters to be constrained from observations, $ρ_m$ is the matter energy density and $ρ_{0c}$ the critical d…
In order to investigate more features of the Brans-Dicke cosmology in the five-dimensional space-time, we explore the solutions of its dynamiacal systems. A behavior of the universe in its early and late time by means of the scale factor is considered. As a results, we show that it is possible to avoid the big rip singularity and to cross the phantom divide line. Furthermore, we review the dark energy component of the universe and its agreement with the observation data for this 3-brane Brans Dicke cosmology by means of the cosmological parameters.
A class of Einstein-dilaton-axion models is found for which almost all flat expanding homogeneous and isotropic universes undergo recurrent periods of acceleration. We also extend recent results on eternally accelerating open universes.
We consider spatially homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) solutions of Milgrom's recently proposed class of bimetric theories of gravity. These theories have two different regimes, corresponding to high and low acceleration. We find simple power-law matter dominated solutions in both, as well as solutions with spatial curvature, and exponentially expanding solutions. In the high acceleration limit these solutions behave like the FRW solutions of General Relativity, with a cosmological constant term that is of the correct order of magnitude to explain the observed acceler…
We show that the general solution of scalar field cosmology in $d$ dimensions with exponential potentials for flat Robertson-Walker metric can be found in a straightforward way by introducing new variables which completely decouple the system. The explicit solution shows the region of parameters where the expansion has eternal acceleration, transient periods of acceleration, or no period of acceleration at all. In the cases of transient acceleration, the energy density exhibits a plateau during the accelerated expansion, where $p\cong -ρ$, due to dominance of potential energy. We determine the…
Parameters that quantify the acceleration of cosmic expansion are conventionally determined within the standard Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) model, which fixes spatial curvature to be homogeneous. Generic averages of Einstein's equations in inhomogeneous cosmology lead to models with non-rigidly evolving average spatial curvature, and different parametrizations of apparent cosmic acceleration. The timescape cosmology is a viable example of such a model without dark energy. Using the largest available supernova data set, the JLA catalogue, we find that the timescape model fits the…
This is a short overview of spatially flat (or open) four-dimensional accelerating cosmologies for some simple exponential potentials obtained by string or M theory compactification on some non-trivial curved spaces, which may lead to some striking results, e.g., the observed cosmic acceleration and the scale of the dark energy from first principles.
Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) model is recently restudied in order to analyze new consequences in gravitation, modifying appropriately the Einstein-Hilbert action. The consequences in EGB cosmology are mainly geometric, with higher order values in the Hubble parameter. In this vein this paper is devoted to contribute with extra evidences about its pros and cons of the model from a cosmological point of view. We start constraining the characteristic parameter, $α$, of the EGB model when a cosmological constant as the catalyst for the acceleration is considered. The constrictions are developed at …
We review the fundamental results of a new cosmological model, based on conformal gravity, and apply them to the analysis of the early data of the Pioneer anomaly. We show that our conformal cosmology can naturally explain the anomalous acceleration of the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft, in terms of a local blueshift region extending around the solar system and therefore affecting the frequencies of the navigational radio signals exchanged between Earth and the spacecraft. On the contrary, conformal gravity corrections alone would not be able to account for dynamical effects of such magnitude to…
Holography is expected as one of the promising descriptions of quantum general relativity. We present a model for a cosmological system involving two holographic screens and find that their equilibrium exactly yields a standard Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. We discuss its cosmological implications by taking into account higher order quantum corrections and quantum nature of horizon evaporation. We will show that this model could give rise to a holographic inflation at high energy scales and realize a late-time acceleration in a unified approach. We test our model from the SN Ia observat…
Brane cosmology presents many interesting possibilities including: phantom acceleration (w<-1), self-acceleration, unification of dark energy with inflation, transient acceleration, loitering cosmology, new singularities at which the Hubble parameter remains finite, cosmic mimicry, etc. The existence of a time-like extra dimension can result in a singularity-free cyclic cosmology.
In this work we have investigated the possibility of having a late time accelerated phase of the universe, suggested by recent supernova observation, in the context of Brans Dicke (BD) theory with a symmetry breaking potential and a matter field. We find that a perfect fluid matter field (pressureless and with pressure) cannot support this acceleration but a fluid with dissipative pressure can drive this late time acceleration. We have also calculated some cosmological parameters in our model to match with observations.
Cosmic acceleration may be the result of unknown physical processes involving either new fields in high energy physics or modifications of gravitation theory. In the latter case, such modifications are usually related to the existence of extra dimensions (which is also required by unification theories), giving rise to the so-called brane cosmology. In this paper we investigate the phenomenon of the acceleration of the Universe in a particular class of brane scenarios in which a large scale modification of gravity arises due to a gravitational \emph{leakage} into extra dimensions. By using the …
A model is suggested to unify the Einstein GR and Dirac Cosmology. There is one adjusted parameter $b_2$ in our model. After adjusting the parameter $b_2$ in the model by using the supernova data, we have calculated the gravitational constant $\bar G$ and the physical quantities of $a(t)$, $q(t)$ and $ρ_r(t)/ ρ_b(t)$ by using the present day quantities as the initial conditions and found that the equation of state parameter $w_θ$ equals to -0.83, the ratio of the density of the addition creation $Ω_Λ=0.8$ and the ratio of the density of the matter including multiplication creation, radiation a…
For the description of the early inflation, and acceleration expansion of the Universe, compatible with observational data, the 5D noncompact Kaluza--Klein cosmology is investigated. It is proposed that the 5D space is filled with a null perfect fluid, resulting a perfect fluid in 4D universe, plus one along the fifth dimension. By analyzing the reduced field equations for flat FRW model, we show the early inflationary behavior and current acceleration of the universe.
A recently proposed Asymptotically Safe cosmology provides an elegant mechanism towards understanding the nature of dark energy and its associated cosmic coincidence problem. The underlying idea is that the accelerated expansion of the universe can occur due to infrared quantum gravity modifications at intermediate astrophysical scales (galaxies or galaxy clusters) which produce local anti-gravity sources. In this cosmological model no extra unproven energy scales or fine-tuning are used. In this study the Asymptotically Safe model is confronted with the most recent observational data from low…
I show that a generic quantum phenomenon can drive cosmic acceleration without the need for dark energy or modified gravity. When treating the universe as a quantum system, one typically focuses on the scale factor (of an FRW spacetime) and ignores many other degrees of freedom. However, the information capacity of the discarded variables will inevitably change as the universe expands, generating "quantum bias" (QB) in the Friedmann equations [Phys. Lett. A 382, 36, 2555 (2018)|arXiv:1707.05789]. If information could be stored in each Planck-volume independently, this effect would give rise to…
Aspects of non-linear Schrödinger-type (NLS) formulation of scalar (phantom) field cosmology on slow-roll, acceleration, WKB approximation and Big Rip singularity are presented. Slow-roll parameters for the curvature and barotropic density terms are introduced. We reexpress all slow-roll parameters, slow-roll conditions and acceleration condition in NLS form. WKB approximation in the NLS formulation is also discussed when simplifying to linear case. Most of the Schrödinger potentials in NLS formulation are very slowly-varying, hence WKB approximation is valid in the ranges. In the NLS form of …
We investigate the effects of noncommutativity between the position-position, position-momentum and momentum-momentum of a phase space corresponding to a modified cosmological model. We show that the existence of such noncommutativity results in a Moyal Poisson algebra between the phase space variables in which the product law between the functions is of the kind of an $α$-deformed product. We then transform the variables in such a way that the Poisson brackets between the dynamical variables take the form of a usual Poisson bracket but this time with a noncommutative structure. For a power la…
In this letter, cosmology of a simple NMDC gravity with $ξR ϕ_{,μ}ϕ^{,μ}$ term and a free kinetic term is considered in flat geometry and in presence of dust matter. A logarithm field transformation $ϕ' = μ\ln ϕ$ is proposed phenomenologically. Assuming slow-roll approximation, equation of motion, scalar field solution and potential are derived as function of kinematic variables. The field solution and potential are found straightforwardly for power-law, de-Sitter and super-acceleration expansions. Slow-roll parameters and slow-roll condition are found to depend on more than one variable. At l…
The varying speed of light (VSL) has been used in cosmological models in which the physical constants vary over time. On the other hand, the Dvali, Gabadadze and Porrati (DGP) brane world model, especially its normal branch has been extensively discussed to justify the current cosmic acceleration. In this article we show that the normal branch of DGP in VSL cosmology leads to a self-accelerating behavior and therefore can interpret cosmic acceleration. Applying statefinder diagnostics demonstrate that our result slightly deviates ΛCDM model.
We study $f(T)$ cosmological models inserting a non-vanishing spatial curvature and discuss its consequences on cosmological dynamics. To figure this out, a polynomial $f(T)$ model and a double torsion model are considered. We first analyze those models with cosmic data, employing the recent surveys of Union 2.1, baryonic acoustic oscillation and cosmic microwave background measurements. We then emphasize that the two popular $f(T)$ models enable the crossing of the phantom divide line due to dark torsion. Afterwards, we compute numerical bounds up to 3-$σ$ confidence level, emphasizing the fa…
In this chapter it is shown how the introduction of a fundamental constant of nature with dimensions of acceleration into the theory of gravity makes it possible to extend gravity in a very consistent manner.
A late epoch cosmic acceleration may be naturally entangled with cosmic coincidence -- the observation that at the onset of acceleration the vacuum energy density fraction nearly coincides with the matter density fraction. In this Letter we show that this is indeed the case with the cosmology of a Friedmann-Lamaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) 3-brane in a five-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. We derive the four-dimensional effective action on a FLRW 3-brane, which helps define a general reduction formula, namely, $M_P^{2}=ρ_{b}/|Λ_5|$, where $M_{P}$ is the effective Planck mass, $Λ_5$ is the…
In this paper, we consider a simple form of expansion history of Universe referred to as the hybrid expansion law - a product of power-law and exponential type of functions. The ansatz by construction mimics the power-law and de Sitter cosmologies as special cases but also provides an elegant description of the transition from deceleration to cosmic acceleration. We point out the Brans-Dicke realization of the cosmic history under consideration. We construct potentials for quintessence, phantom and tachyon fields, which can give rise to the hybrid expansion law in general relativity. We invest…
We present some cosmological models which unify the late and early-time acceleration eras with the radiation and the matter domination era, and we realize the cosmological models by using the theoretical framework of $F(R)$ gravity. Particularly, the first model unifies the late and early-time acceleration with the matter domination era, and the second model unifies all the evolution eras of our Universe. The two models are described in the same way at early and late times, and only the intermediate stages of the evolution have some differences. Each cosmological model contains two Type IV sin…
A multidimensional cosmology with FRW type metric having 4-dimensional space-time and $d$-dimensional Ricci-flat internal space is considered with a higher dimensional cosmological constant. The classical cosmology in commutative and DSR-GUP contexts is studied and the corresponding exact solutions for negative and positive cosmological constants are obtained. In the positive cosmological constant case, it is shown that unlike the commutative as well as GUP cases, in DSR-GUP case both scale factors of internal and external spaces after accelerating phase will inevitably experience decelerating…
Recently, the tachyon cosmology has been represented as dark energy model to support the current acceleration of the universe without phantom crossing. In this paper, we study the dynamics of the tachyon cosmology in which the field plays the role of tachyon field and also non--minimally coupled to the matter lagrangian. The model shows current universe acceleration and also phantom crossing in the future. Two cosmological tests are also performed to validate the model; the difference in the distance modulus and the model independent Cosmological Redshift Drift (CRD) test.
We derive a new set of equations which describe a continuous one parameter family of expanding wave solutions of the Einstein equations such that the Friedmann universe associated with the pure radiation phase of the Standard Model of Cosmology, is embedded as a single point in this family. All of the spacetime metrics associated with this family satisfy the equation of state $p=ρc^2/3$, correct for the pure radiation phase after inflation in the Standard Model of the Big Bang. By expanding solutions about the center to leading order in the Hubble length, the family reduces to a one-parameter …
Homogeneous isotropic spatial flat cosmological models with two torsion functions in vacuum are built and investigated in the framework of de Sitter gauge theory of gravity. It is shown that by certain choices of parameters of gravitational Lagrangian the cosmological equations have some exact constant solutions that turn out to be stable de Sitter critical points of dynamical systems and can explain observable acceleration of cosmological expansion. The role of the space-time torsion provoking the acceleration of cosmological expansion is shown.
Here, cosmology is obtained from the variable gravitational constant $ G \propto ϕ^{-2}$ with $ ϕ(x) $ being a scalar and its fluctuations around the ground state. The gravitational action contains Einstein-Hilbert like term with variable $ G $, kinetic energy and self-interaction potential for $ ϕ(x) $. Two phase transitions take place in this model. The first one takes place at the GUT (grand unified theory) scale $ \sim 2.45 \times 10^{14}{\rm GeV} $, when the early universe exits the inflationay phase and the second one at the electro-weak scale. Spontaneous symmetry breaking takes place a…
In this paper we consider Chameleonic Generalized Brans--Dicke Cosmology in the framework of FRW universes. The bouncing solution and phantom crossing is investigated for the model. Two independent cosmological tests: Cosmological Redshift Drift (CRD) and distance modulus are applied to test the model with the observation.
Cosmological models that invoke warm or cold dark matter can not explain observed regularities in the properties of dwarf galaxies, their highly anisotropic spatial distributions, nor the correlation between observed mass discrepancies and acceleration. These problems with the standard model of cosmology have deep implications, in particular in combination with the observation that the data are excellently described by Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). MOND is a classical dynamics theory which explains the mass discrepancies in galactic systems, and in the universe at large, without invoking…
This article looks at how inhomogeneous spacetime models may be significant for cosmology. First it looks at how the averaging process may affect large scale dynamics, with backreaction effects leading to effective contributions to the averaged energy-momentum tensor. Secondly it considers how local inhomogeneities may affect cosmological observations in cosmology, possibly significantly affecting the concordance model parameters. Thirdly it presents the possibility that the universe is spatially inhomogeneous on Hubble scales, with a violation of the Copernican principle leading to an apparen…
Some problems of cosmology: the big bang singularity, the origin of conventional matter, of dark matter and of dark energy may be successfully described and treated in the framework of the Weyl-Dirac theory. This theory, being a minimal expansion of Einstein's GRT, contains in addition to the metric tensor\g, the Weyl connection vector \w and the Dirac gauge functionβ. From these geometrically based quantities one obtains the behavior of our universe. The Weyl connection vector \w existing in microcells creates dark matter particles, weylons. In the very early universe βcreates matter, whereas…
A central theme in cosmology is the perplexing fact that the Universe is undergoing an accelerating expansion. The latter, one of the most important and challenging current problems in cosmology, represents a new imbalance in the governing gravitational field equations. Several candidates, responsible for this expansion, have been proposed in the literature, in particular, dark energy models and modified gravity, amongst others. In this paper, we explore the possibility that the late-time cosmic acceleration is due to infra-red modifications of Einstein's theory of General Relativity, and revi…
We review the effect of the formation of nonlinear structures on the expansion rate, spatial curvature and light propagation in the universe, focusing on the possibility that it could explain cosmological observations without the introduction of dark energy or modified gravity. We concentrate on explaining the relevant physics and highlighting open questions.
We study unimodular gravity in the context of cosmology, particularly some interesting consequences that might be able to describe the background cosmology and the late cosmic acceleration. We focus our attention on the hypothesis of \textit{non conservation of the energy momentum tensor}. This characteristic has an interesting outcome: we can obtain a modified Friedmann equation along with the acceleration equation and also new fluid equations related to a third order derivative of the scale factor, known in cosmography as the jerk parameter. As a consequence of this theory, it seems that rad…
A multidimensional cosmological model describing the dynamics of n+1 Ricci-flat factor-spaces M_i in the presence of a one-component anisotropic fluid is considered. The pressures in all spaces are proportional to the density: p_i = w_i ρ, i = 0,...,n. Solutions with accelerated expansion of our 3-space M_0 and small enough variation of the gravitational constant G are found. These solutions exist for two branches of the parameter w_0. The first branch describes superstiff matter with w_0 > 1, the second one may contain phantom matter with w_0 < - 1, e.g., when G grows with time.
