We revisit acceleration-induced nonlocal electrodynamics and the phenomenon of photon spin-rotation coupling. The kernel of the theory for the electromagnetic field tensor involves parity violation under the assumption of linearity of the field kernel in the acceleration tensor. However, we show that parity conservation can be maintained by extending the field kernel to include quadratic terms in the acceleration tensor. The field kernel must vanish in the absence of acceleration; otherwise, a general dependence of the kernel on the acceleration tensor cannot be theoretically excluded. The physical implications of the quadratic kernel are briefly discussed.
We discuss two nonlocal models of electrodynamics in which the nonlocality is induced by the acceleration of the observer. Such an observer actually measures an electromagnetic field that exhibits persistent memory effects. We compare Mashhoon's model with a new ansatz developed here in the framework of charge & flux electrodynamics with a constitutive law involving the Levi-Civita connection as seen from the observer's local frame and conclude that they are in partial agreement only for the case of constant acceleration.
The nonlocal electrodynamics of accelerated systems is discussed in connection with the development of Lorentz-invariant nonlocal field equations. Nonlocal Maxwell's equations are presented explicitly for certain linearly accelerated systems. In general, the field equations remain nonlocal even after accelerated motion has ceased.
It is shown, that the radiation of the charge, moving with uniform acceleration or uniformly moving round a circle and also freely moving in a gravitational field, contradicts the principle of equivalence. It is also shown, that the interaction of the charges, moving with uniform acceleration or uniformly circling, which has been calculated within the framework of classical electrodynamics, leads to the violation of laws of conservation of energy, impulse and angular momentum. We have offered a method in which way to conform electrodynamics to the principle of equivalence. So in the electrodyn…
The acceleration transformations form a 4-parameter Abelian subgroup of the conformal group of Minkowski spacetime. The passive interpretation of acceleration transformations leads to a congruence of uniformly accelerated observers in Minkowski spacetime. The properties of this congruence are studied in order to illustrate the kinematics of accelerated observers in relativistic physics. The generalization of this approach under conformal rescaling of the spacetime metric is examined.
Acceleration-induced nonlocality is discussed and a simple field theory of nonlocal electrodynamics is developed. The theory involves a pair of real parameters that are to be determined from observation. The implications of this theory for the phenomenon of helicity-rotation coupling are briefly examined.
The nonlocal electrodynamics of uniformly rotating systems is presented and its predictions are discussed. In this case, due to paucity of experimental data, the nonlocal theory cannot be directly confronted with observation at present. The approach adopted here is therefore based on the correspondence principle: the nonrelativistic quantum physics of electrons in circular "orbits" is studied. The helicity dependence of the photoeffect from the circular states of atomic hydrogen is explored as well as the resonant absorption of a photon by an electron in a circular "orbit" about a uniform magn…
This paper is devoted to study the phase space analysis of isotropic and homogenous universe model by taking a noninteracting mixture of electromagnetic and viscous radiating fluids whose viscous pressure satisfies a nonlinear version of the Israel-Stewart transport equation. We establish an autonomous system of equations by introducing normalized dimensionless variables. In order to analyze stability of the system, we find corresponding critical points for different values of the parameters. We also evaluate power-law scale factor whose behavior indicates different phases of the universe mode…
The standard relativistic theory of accelerated reference frames in Minkowski spacetime is described. The measurements of accelerated observers are considered and the limitations of the standard theory, based on the hypothesis of locality, are pointed out. The physical principles of the nonlocal theory of accelerated observers are presented. The implications of the nonlocal theory are briefly discussed.
The characteristics of the memory of accelerated motion in Minkowski spacetime are discussed within the framework of the nonlocal theory of accelerated observers. Two types of memory are distinguished: kinetic and dynamic. We show that only kinetic memory is acceptable, since dynamic memory leads to divergences for nonuniform accelerated motion.
Theories of non-linear electrodynamics naturally describe deviations from Maxwell's theory in the strong field regime. Among these, of special interest is the recently discovered ModMax electrodynamics, which is a unique 1-parametric generalization of Maxwell's theory that possesses the conformal invariance as well as the electromagnetic duality. In this paper we construct the asymptotically AdS accelerated black holes in this theory and study their thermodynamics - providing thus a first example of accelerated solutions coupled to non-linear electrodynamics. Our study opens a window towards s…
The conceptual basis for the nonlocality of accelerated systems is presented. The nonlocal theory of accelerated observers and its consequences are briefly described. Nonlocal field equations are developed for the case of the electrodynamics of linearly accelerated systems.
The nonlocal theory of accelerated systems is extended to the propagation of Dirac particles. The implications of nonlocality for the phenomenon of spin-rotation coupling are discussed. The Lorentz-invariant nonlocal Dirac equation is presented for certain special classes of accelerated observers.
Nonlocal gravity (NLG) is a classical nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation based on a certain analogy with the nonlocal electrodynamics of media. The history dependence enters NLG through a constitutive relation involving a causal kernel that should ultimately be determined via observational data. The purpose of this paper is to reformulate nonlocal gravity such that the nonlocal aspect of the constitutive relation directly connects measurable quantities as in the nonlocal electrodynamics of media. The resulting constitutive relation turns out to coincide with the recent…
The measurement of an electromagnetic radiation field by a linearly accelerated observer is discussed. The nonlocality of this process is emphasized. The nonlocal theory of accelerated observers is briefly described and the consequences of this theory are illustrated using a concrete example involving the measurement of an incident pulse of radiation by an observer that experiences uniform acceleration during a limited interval of time.
Non-linear electrodynamics coupled to general relativity is investigated. In general relativity, it is observed that the expansion of the universe is accelerating if the source of the gravitational field is the non-linear electromagnetic field. Moreover, a pure magnetic universe is explored. As a result, it is demonstrated that the magnetic field drives the cosmic expansion to be accelerated. Furthermore, the stability analysis of the present model is developed. In addition, the energy conditions and future singularities are studied in detail.
A new model of nonlinear electrodynamics with a dimensional parameter $β$ coupled to gravity is considered. We show that an accelerated expansion of the universe takes place if the nonlinear electromagnetic field is the source of the gravitational field. A pure magnetic universe is investigated and the magnetic field drives the universe to accelerate. In this model, after the big bang, the universe undergoes inflation, and the accelerated expansion and then decelerates approaching Minkowski spacetime asymptotically. We demonstrate the causality of the model and a classical stability at the dec…
Acceleration-induced nonlocality and the corresponding Lorentz-invariant nonlocal field equations of accelerated systems in Minkowski spacetime are discussed. Under physically reasonable conditions, the nonlocal equation of motion of the field can be derived from a variational principle of stationary action involving a nonlocal Lagrangian that is simply obtained by composing the local inertial Lagrangian with the nonlocal transformation of the field to the accelerated system. The implications of this approach for the electromagnetic and Dirac fields are briefly discussed.
It is shown that a newly derived "exact expression" for radiation of an accelerated charge in the recent literature is simply incorrect, having arisen because of a wrong relativistic transformation of the distance parameter. The ensuing claim that the newly derived expression alone that satisfies the energy conservation for the electromagnetic radiation, is based on a wrong reasoning where a proper distinction between the time during which the radiation is received and the time for emission (retarded time of the charge) was not maintained.
We consider the problem of uniqueness of the kernel in the nonlocal theory of accelerated observers. In a recent work, we showed that the convolution kernel is ruled out as it can lead to divergences for nonuniform accelerated motion. Here we determine the general form of bounded continuous kernels and use observational data regarding spin-rotation coupling to argue that the kinetic kernel given by $K(τ,τ')=k(τ')$ is the only physically acceptable solution.
According to the locality postulate of special relativity, the measurements of physical fields by accelerated observers at a given event in Minkowski spacetime are related to each other by the representations of the Lorentz group. Nonlocal extensions of these representations are necessary, however, once acceleration-induced nonlocality is taken into account. The particular case of Dirac spinors is treated in detail and the corresponding nonlocal transformation group is studied.
Maxwell's equations are formulated in arbitrary moving frames by means of tetrad fields, which are interpreted as reference frames adapted to observers in space-time. We assume the existence of a general distribution of charges and currents in an inertial frame. Tetrad fields are used to project the electromagnetic fields and sources on accelerated frames. The purpose is to study several configurations of fields and observers that in the literature are understood as paradoxes. For instance, are the two situations, (i) an accelerated charge in an inertial frame, and (ii) a charge at rest in an …
Nonlocal electrodynamics is a formalism developed to include nonlocal effects in the measurement process caused by the non-inertial state of the observers. This theory modifies Maxwell's electrodynamics by eliminating the hypothesis of locality that assumes an accelerated observer simultaneously equivalent to a comoving inertial frame of reference. In this scenario, the transformation between an inertial and accelerated observer is generalized which affects the properties of physical fields. In particular, we analyze how an uniformly accelerated observer perceives a homogeneous and isotropic b…
In this paper, we study the nonlinear electrodynamics in the framework of $f(T)$ gravity for FRW universe along with dust matter, magnetic and torsion contributions. We evaluate the equation of state and deceleration parameters to explore the accelerated expansion of the universe. The validity of generalized second law of thermodynamics for Hubble and event horizons is also investigated in this scenario. For this purpose, we assume pole-like and power-law forms of scale factor and construct $f(T)$ models. The graphical behavior of the cosmological parameters versus smaller values of redshift $…
We analyze the operational meaning of the residual entanglement in non-inertial fermionic systems in terms of the achievable violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality. We demonstrate that the quantum correlations of fermions, which were previously found to survive in the infinite acceleration limit, cannot be considered to be non-local. The entanglement shared by an inertial and an accelerated observer cannot be utilized for the violation of the CHSH inequality in case of high accelerations. Our results are shown to extend beyond the single mode approximation commonly used …
The physical basis of the standard theory of general relativity is examined and a nonlocal theory of accelerated observers is described that involves a natural generalization of the hypothesis of locality. The nonlocal theory is confronted with experiment via an indirect approach. The implications of the results for gravitation are briefly discussed.
We apply the dynamical systems tools to study the (linear) dynamics of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes that are fuelled by non-linear electrodynamics. We focus, mainly, in two particular models. In the first model the cosmic evolution is fuelled by cold dark matter, a cosmological constant and a non-linear electrodynamics field. In the second case non-singular cosmology and late-time accelerated expansion are unified in a model where the Einstein's field equations are sourced only by cold dark matter and a non-linear electrodynamics field. It is shown that, in contrast to previous claims,…
The nonlocal theory of accelerated systems is extended to linear gravitational waves as measured by accelerated observers in Minkowski spacetime. The implications of this approach are discussed. In particular, the nonlocal modifications of helicity-rotation coupling are pointed out and a nonlocal wave equation is presented for a special class of uniformly rotating observers. The results of this study, via Einstein's heuristic principle of equivalence, provide the incentive for a nonlocal classical theory of the gravitational field.
Characteristics of observers in relativity theory are critically examined. For field measurements in Minkowski spacetime, the Bohr-Rosenfeld principle implies that the connection between actual (i.e., noninertial) and inertial observers must be nonlocal. Nonlocal electrodynamics of non-uniformly rotating observers is discussed and the consequences of this theory for the phenomenon of spin-rotation coupling are briefly explored.
The possibility that the strength of gravitational interactions might slowly increase with distance, is explored by formulating a set of effective field equations, which incorporate the gravitational, vacuum-polarization induced, running of Newton's constant $G$. The resulting long distance (or large time) behaviour depends on only one adjustable parameter $ξ$, and the implications for the Robertson-Walker universe are calculated, predicting an accelerated power-law expansion at later times $t \sim ξ\sim 1/H$.
In the special theory of relativity, Lorentz invariance is extended in Minkowski spacetime from ideal inertial observers to actual observers by means of the hypothesis of locality, which postulates that accelerated observers are always pointwise inertial. A critical examination of the locality assumption reveals its domain of validity: it is true for pointwise coincidences, but is in conflict with wave-particle duality. To remedy this situation, a nonlocal theory of accelerated systems is presented that reduces to the standard theory in the limit of small accelerations. Some of the main conseq…
We extend the Wald solution to a black hole that is also boosted. More specifically, we derive analytic solutions for the Maxwell equations for a rotating black hole moving at constant speed in an asymptotically uniform magnetic test field. By adopting Kerr-Schild coordinates we avoid singular behaviours at the horizon and obtain a complete description of the charge and current distributions in terms of the black-hole spin and boost. Using this solution, we compute the energy losses expected when charged particles are accelerated along the magnetic field lines, improving previous estimates tha…
It is shown that the addition of a non-linear term to the Lagrangian of the electromagnetic field yields a fluid with an asymptotically super-negative equation of state, causing an accelerated expansion of the universe. Some general properties of nonlinear electromagnetism in cosmology are also discussed.
We provide an example of nonlocal scalar electrodynamics that allows the same Higgs mechanism so successful in local field theory. The nonlocal action is structured in order to have the same exact solutions and the same equations of motion for perturbations of the local theory, at any perturbative order. Therefore, the perturbative degrees of freedom that propagate in the unstable vacuum are reshuffled when the stable vacuum is replaced in the EoM, but their number does not change at any perturbative order, and their properties are the same like in the usual local theory. Finally, the theory i…
We briefly review the current status of nonlocal gravity (NLG), which is a classical nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation based on a certain analogy with the nonlocal electrodynamics of media. Nonlocal gravity thus involves integro-differential field equations and a causal constitutive kernel that should ultimately be determined from observational data. We consider the stationary gravitational field of an isolated rotating astronomical source in the linear approximation of nonlocal gravity. In this weak-field and slow-motion approximation of NLG, we describe the gravitom…
Electrodynamics of rotating systems is expected to exhibit novel nonlocal features that come about when acceleration-induced nonlocality is introduced into the special relativity theory in conformity with the Bohr-Rosenfeld principle. The implications of nonlocality for the amplitude and frequency of electromagnetic radiation received by uniformly rotating observers are investigated.

The analogy between electrodynamics and the translational gauge theory of gravity is employed in this paper to develop an ansatz for a nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation. Working in the linear approximation, we show that the resulting nonlocal theory is equivalent to general relativity with "dark matter". The nature of the predicted "dark matter", which is the manifestation of the nonlocal character of gravity in our model, is briefly discussed. It is demonstrated that this approach can provide a basis for the Tohline-Kuhn treatment of the astrophysical evidence for da…
A certain class of nonlocal theories eliminates an arbitrary cosmological constant (CC) from a universe that can be perceived as our world. Dark energy then cannot be explained by a CC; it could however be due to massive gravity. We calculate the new corrections, which originate from the nonlocal terms that eliminate the CC, to the decoupling limit Lagrangian of massive gravity. The new nonlocal terms also have internal field space Galilean symmetry and are referred here as "nonlocal Galileons." We then study a self-accelerated solution and show that the new nonlocal terms change the perturbat…
We review some quantum electrodynamical effects related to the uniform acceleration of atoms in vacuum. After discussing the energy level shifts of a uniformly accelerated atom in vacuum, we investigate the atom-wall Casimir-Polder force for accelerated atoms, and the van der Waals/Casimir-Polder interaction between two accelerated atoms. The possibility of detecting the Unruh effect through these phenomena is also discussed in detail.
In this work, we have considered the flat FRW model of the universe filled with electro-magnetic field. First, the Maxwell's electro-magnetic field in linear form has been discussed and after that the modified Lagrangian in non-linear form for accelerated universe has been considered. The corresponding energy density and pressure for non-linear electro-magnetic field have been calculated. We have found the condition such that the electro-magnetic field generates dark energy. The correspondence between the electro-magnetic field and the other dark energy candidates namely tachyonic field, DBI-e…
The Unruh effect -- according to which linearly accelerated observers with proper acceleration a= constant in the (no-particle) vacuum state of inertial observers experience a thermal bath of particles with temperature $T_U = a \hbar / (2 πk_B c)$ -- has just completed its 40$^{th}$ anniversary. A 'direct' experimental confirmation of the Unruh effect has been seen with concern because the linear acceleration needed to reach a temperature $1 K$ is of order $10^{20} m/s^2$. Although the Unruh effect can be rigorously considered as well tested as free quantum field theory itself, it would be sat…
Gauge-invariant observables for quantum gravity are described, with explicit constructions given primarily to leading order in Newton's constant, analogous to and extending constructions first given by Dirac in quantum electrodynamics. These can be thought of as operators that create a particle, together with its inseparable gravitational field, and reduce to usual field operators of quantum field theory in the weak-gravity limit; they include both Wilson-line operators, and those creating a Coulombic field configuration. We also describe operators creating the field of a particle in motion; a…
The purpose of this paper is to explain clearly why nonlocality must be an essential part of the theory of relativity. In the standard local version of this theory, Lorentz invariance is extended to accelerated observers by assuming that they are pointwise inertial. This locality postulate is exact when dealing with phenomena involving classical point particles and rays of radiation, but breaks down for electromagnetic fields, as field properties in general cannot be measured instantaneously. The problem is corrected in nonlocal relativity by supplementing the locality postulate with a certain…
We consider the nonlinearly extended Einstein-Maxwell-axion theory, which is based on the account for two symmetries: first, the discrete symmetry associated with the properties of the axion field, second, the Jackson's symmetry, prescribing to the electrodynamics to be invariant with respect to the rotation in the plane coordinated by the electric and magnetic fields. We derive the master equations of the nonlinearly extended theory, and apply them to the Bianchi-I model with magnetic field. The main result, describing the behavior of the nonlinearly coupled axion, electromagnetic and gravita…
The analysis of measurements of accelerated observers in Minkowski spacetime has led to the development of nonlocal special relativity theory. Inertia and gravitation are intimately connected in accordance with the principle of equivalence. We therefore seek a nonlocal generalization of the theory of gravitation such that in the new theory the field equations are integro-differential equations for the local gravitational field. We show that it is possible to develop a nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation via the introduction of a scalar "constitutive" kernel in the telep…
Modeling the qubit by a two-level semiclassical detector coupled to a massless scalar field, we investigate how the Unruh effect affects the nonlocality and entanglement of two-qubit and three-qubit states when one of the entangled qubits is accelerated. Two distinct differences with the results of free field model in non-inertial frames are (i) for the two-qubit state, the CHSH inequality can not be violated for sufficiently large but finite acceleration, furthermore, the concurrence will experience "sudden death"; and (ii) for the three-qubit state, not only the entanglement vanishes in the …
