The analogy between electrodynamics and the translational gauge theory of gravity is employed in this paper to develop an ansatz for a nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation. Working in the linear approximation, we show that the resulting nonlocal theory is equivalent to general relativity with "dark matter". The nature of the predicted "dark matter", which is the manifestation of the nonlocal character of gravity in our model, is briefly discussed. It is demonstrated that this approach can provide a basis for the Tohline-Kuhn treatment of the astrophysical evidence for dark matter.
In nonlocal general relativity, linearized gravitational waves are damped as they propagate from the source to the receiver in the Minkowski vacuum. Nonlocal gravity is a generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation in which nonlocality is due to the gravitational memory of past events. That nonlocal gravity is dissipative is demonstrated in this paper within certain approximation schemes. The gravitational memory drag leads to the decay of the amplitude of gravitational waves given by the exponential damping factor exp (-t/τ), where $τ$ depends on the kernel of nonlocal gravity. The dam…
We investigate gravitational radiation in the linear approximation within the framework of the recent nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation. In this theory, nonlocality can simulate dark matter; in fact, in the Newtonian regime, we recover the phenomenological Tohline-Kuhn approach to modified gravity. To account for the observational data regarding the rotation curves of spiral galaxies, nonlocality is associated with a characteristic length scale of order λ_0 = 10 kpc. It follows that in nonlocal gravity, the treatment of extremely low-frequency (~ 10^{-12} Hz) gravitat…
The Newtonian regime of a recent nonlocal extension of general relativity (GR) is investigated. Nonlocality is introduced via a scalar "constitutive" kernel in a special case of the translational gauge theory of gravitation, namely, the teleparallel equivalent of GR. In this theory, the nonlocal aspect of gravity simulates dark matter. A nonlocal and nonlinear generalization of Poisson's equation of Newtonian gravitation is presented. The implications of nonlocality for the gravitational physics in the solar system are briefly studied.

The analysis of measurements of accelerated observers in Minkowski spacetime has led to the development of nonlocal special relativity theory. Inertia and gravitation are intimately connected in accordance with the principle of equivalence. We therefore seek a nonlocal generalization of the theory of gravitation such that in the new theory the field equations are integro-differential equations for the local gravitational field. We show that it is possible to develop a nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation via the introduction of a scalar "constitutive" kernel in the telep…
The nonlocal theory of accelerated systems is extended to linear gravitational waves as measured by accelerated observers in Minkowski spacetime. The implications of this approach are discussed. In particular, the nonlocal modifications of helicity-rotation coupling are pointed out and a nonlocal wave equation is presented for a special class of uniformly rotating observers. The results of this study, via Einstein's heuristic principle of equivalence, provide the incentive for a nonlocal classical theory of the gravitational field.
Energy-momentum conservation requires the associated gravitational fluxes on an asymptotically flat spacetime to scale as $1/r^2$, as $r \to \infty$, where $r$ is the distance between the observer and the source of the gravitational waves. We expand the equations-of-motion for the Deser-Woodard nonlocal gravity model up to quadratic order in metric perturbations, to compute its gravitational energy-momentum flux due to an isolated system. The contributions from the nonlocal sector contains $1/r$ terms proportional to the acceleration of the Newtonian energy of the system, indicating such nonlo…
The physical basis of the standard theory of general relativity is examined and a nonlocal theory of accelerated observers is described that involves a natural generalization of the hypothesis of locality. The nonlocal theory is confronted with experiment via an indirect approach. The implications of the results for gravitation are briefly discussed.
Nonlocal gravity (NLG) is a classical nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation developed in close analogy with the nonlocal electrodynamics of media. It appears that the nonlocal aspect of the universal gravitational interaction could simulate dark matter. Within the Newtonian regime of NLG, we investigate the deviation of the gravitational force from the Newtonian inverse square law as a consequence of the existence of the effective dark matter. In particular, we work out the magnitude of this deviation in the solar system out to 100 astronomical units. Moreover, we give an…
We study the causal structure of a class of weakly nonlocal gravitational theories (eventually coupled to matter) that are compatible with perturbative unitarity and finiteness at quantum level. In particular, we show that in nonlocal quantum gravity a Shapiro's time advance never occurs. Moreover, we provide a recipe to construct a general ultraviolet complete gravitational theory coupled to matter (with or without supersymmetry) compatible with causality. Therefore, nonlocal gravity is consistent with causality, as well as string theory.
The recent nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation reduces in the Newtonian regime to a nonlocal and nonlinear modification of Poisson's equation of Newtonian gravity. The nonlocally modified Poisson equation implies that nonlocality can simulate dark matter. Observational data regarding dark matter provide limited information about the functional form of the reciprocal kernel, from which the original nonlocal kernel of the theory must be determined. We study this inverse problem of nonlocal gravity in the linear domain, where the applicability of the Fourier transform meth…
Nonlocal gravity models are constructed to explain the current acceleration of the universe. These models are inspired by the infrared correction appearing in Einstein Hilbert action. Here we develop the Hamiltonian formalism of a nonlocal model by considering only terms to quadratic order in Ricci tensor and Ricci scalar. We also show how to count the degree of freedom using Hamiltonian formalism in this model.
In this paper, we describe the extension to study the thermodynamics of the structure formation in the large scale Universe in the nonlocal gravity formalism using standard statistical mechanics. From the derivation of the grand partition function in a modified version of the Yang-Lee theory, we obtained the corresponding thermodynamics properties that can be in consistency with a Bose-Einstein dark matter framework and derive its gravitational phase transition.
We explore some of the cosmological implications of the recent classical nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation in which nonlocality is due to the gravitational memory of past events. In the Newtonian regime of this theory, the nonlocal character of gravity simulates dark matter in spiral galaxies and clusters of galaxies. However, dark matter is considered indispensable as well for structure formation in standard models of cosmology. Can nonlocal gravity solve the problem of structure formation without recourse to dark matter? Here we make a beginning in this direction by…
We prove that the Minkowski spacetime is stable at nonlinear level and to all perturbative orders in the gravitational perturbation in a general class of nonlocal gravitational theories that are unitary and finite at quantum level.

Occurrence of spacetime singularities is one of the peculiar features of Einstein gravity, signalling limitation on probing short distances in spacetime. This alludes to the existence of a fundamental length scale in nature. On contrary, Heisenberg quantum uncertainty relation seems to allow for probing arbitrarily small length scales. To reconcile these two conflicting ideas in line with a well known framework of quantum gravity, several modifications of Heisenberg algebra have been proposed. However, it has been extensively argued that such a minimum length would introduce nonlocality in the…
Even though it is not possible to differentiate General Relativity from Teleparallel Gravity using classical experiments, it could be possible to discriminate between them by quantum gravitational effects. These effects have motivated the introduction of nonlocal deformations of General Relativity, and similar effects are also expected to occur in Teleparallel Gravity. Here, we study nonlocal deformations of Teleparallel Gravity along with its cosmological solutions. We observe that Nonlocal Teleparallel Gravity (like nonlocal General Relativity) is consistent with the present cosmological dat…

A nonlocal gravity model with a function $f(\Box^{-1} R)$, where $\Box$ is the d'Alembert operator, is considered. The algorithm, allowing to reconstruct $f(\Box^{-1} R)$, corresponding to the given Hubble parameter and the state parameter of the matter, is proposed. Using this algorithm, we find the functions $f(\Box^{-1} R)$, corresponding to de Sitter solutions.

We present a class of generally covariant nonlocal gravity models which have a flat-space general relativistic (GR) limit and also possess a stable de Sitter (dS) or Anti-de Sitter (AdS) background with an arbitrary value of its cosmological constant. The nonlocal action of the theory is formulated in the Euclidean signature spacetime and is understood as an approximation to the quantum effective action (generating functional of one-particle irreducible diagrams) originating from fundamental quantum gravity theory. Using the known relation between the Schwinger-Keldysh technique for quantum ex…
We briefly review the current status of nonlocal gravity (NLG), which is a classical nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation based on a certain analogy with the nonlocal electrodynamics of media. Nonlocal gravity thus involves integro-differential field equations and a causal constitutive kernel that should ultimately be determined from observational data. We consider the stationary gravitational field of an isolated rotating astronomical source in the linear approximation of nonlocal gravity. In this weak-field and slow-motion approximation of NLG, we describe the gravitom…
Non-perturbative studies of quantum gravity have recently suggested the possibility that the strength of gravitational interactions might slowly increase with distance. Here a set of generally covariant effective field equations are proposed, which are intended to incorporate the gravitational, vacuum-polarization induced, running of Newton's constant $G$. One attractive feature of this approach is that, from an underlying quantum gravity perspective, the resulting long distance (or large time) effective gravitational action inherits only one adjustable parameter $ξ$, having the units of a len…
The recent classical nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation is presented within the framework of general relativity via the introduction of a preferred frame field. The nonlocal generalization of Einstein's field equations is derived. The linear approximation of nonlocal gravity (NLG) is thoroughly examined and the solutions of the corresponding field equations are discussed. It is shown that nonlocality, with a characteristic length scale of order 1 kpc, simulates dark matter in the linear regime while preserving causality. Light deflection in linearized nonlocal gravity …
We present an improved version of our original cosmological model to explain the current phase of cosmological acceleration without resorting to a cosmological constant or any other mass scale. Like the original, this phenomenological approach is based on an effective quantum gravitational action, but now depends on the original nonlocal dimensionless scalar $X = \square^{-1} R$ only through $Y = \square^{-1} g^{μν} X_{,μ} X_{,ν}$. Both $X$ and $Y$ are quiescent during the radiation-dominated ($R=0$) era, both only grow logarithmically during matter dominance, and neither affects the propagati…
We address the stability issue of Ricci-flat and maximally symmetric spacetimes in nonlocal gravity to all perturbative orders in the gravitational perturbation. Assuming a potential at least cubic in curvature tensors but quadratic in the Ricci tensor, our proof consists on a mapping of the stability analysis in nonlocal gravity to the same problem in Einstein-Hilbert theory. One of the consequences is that only the graviton field can propagate and the theory is ghost-free at all perturbative orders. All the results known in Einstein gravity in vacuum with or without a cosmological constant c…
A brief account of the present status of the recent nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation is presented. The main physical assumptions that underlie this theory are described. We clarify the physical meaning and significance of Weitzenböck's torsion, and emphasize its intimate relationship with the gravitational field, characterized by the Riemannian curvature of spacetime. In this theory, nonlocality can simulate dark matter; in fact, in the Newtonian regime, we recover the phenomenological Tohline-Kuhn approach to modified gravity. To account for the observational data r…
The Newtonian approximation with a nonvanishing nonlocal background field is analyzed for the scalar-tensor nonlocal gravity and nonlocal Gauss-Bonnet gravity. For these two theories, our calculations show that the Newtonian gravitational constant $G$ is time-varying and $|\dot{G}/G|=\mathcal{O}(H_0)$ for the general case of cosmological background evolution, which is similar to the results of the Deser-Woodard and Maggiore-Mancarella theories. Therefore, observations about the orbit period of binary star (or star-planet) systems could rule out these theories. One thing worth mentioning is tha…
A general class of f(R) gravity models with minimally coupling a nonlocal scalar field is considered. The Ostrogradski representation for nonlocal gravitational models with a quadratic potential and the way of its localization are proposed. We study the action with an arbitrary analytic function $F(\Box)$, which has both simple and double roots. The way of localization allows to find particular solutions of nonlocal equations of gravity.
During hundred years of General Relativity (GR), many significant gravitational phenomena have been predicted and discovered. General Relativity is still the best theory of gravity. Nevertheless, some (quantum) theoretical and (astrophysical and cosmological) phenomenological difficulties of modern gravity have been motivation to search more general theory of gravity than GR. As a result, many modifications of GR have been considered. One of promising recent investigations is Nonlocal Modified Gravity. In this article we present a brief review of some nonlocal gravity models with their cosmolo…
We study the matter one-loop quantum corrections to the gravitational sector in a gravity theory coupled with a nonlocal scalar field. We find that non-renormalizable divergences disappear when the propagator of the scalar field approaches to a non-zero constant at high momentum, while the vacuum energy is still divergent. We also comment on non-local modification of fermion, gauge field and graviton.
Nonlocal massive gravity can provide an interesting explanation for the late-time cosmic acceleration, with a dark energy equation of state $w_{\rm DE}$ smaller than $-1$ in the past. We derive the equations of linear cosmological perturbations to confront such models with the observations of large-scale structures. The effective gravitational coupling to nonrelativistic matter associated with galaxy clusterings is close to Newton's gravitational constant $G$ for a mass scale $m$ slightly smaller than today's Hubble parameter $H_0$. Taking into account the background expansion history as well …
The experimental results that test Bell's inequality have found strong evidence suggesting that there are nonlocal aspects in nature. Evidently, these nonlocal effects, which concern spacelike separated regions, create an enormous tension between general relativity and quantum mechanics. In addition, by avoiding the coincidence limit, semiclassical gravity can also accommodate nonlocal aspects. Motivated by these results, we study if it is possible to construct geometrical theories of gravitation that are nonlocal in the sense of Bell. We propose three constructions of such theories, which cou…
We investigate the gravitational perturbations of the Schwarzschild black hole in the nonlocal gravity model recently proposed by Deser and Woodard (DW-II). The analysis is performed in the localized version in which the nonlocal corrections are represented by some auxiliary scalar fields. We find that the nonlocal corrections do not affect the axial gravitational perturbations, and hence the axial modes are completely identical to those in General Relativity (GR). However, the polar modes get different from their GR counterparts when the scalar fields are excited at the background level. In s…
Nonlocal gravity is the recent classical nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation in which the past history of the gravitational field is taken into account. In this theory, nonlocality appears to simulate dark matter. The virial theorem for the Newtonian regime of nonlocal gravity theory is derived and its consequences for "isolated" astronomical systems in virial equilibrium at the present epoch are investigated. In particular, for a sufficiently isolated nearby galaxy in virial equilibrium, the galaxy's baryonic diameter---namely, the diameter of the smallest sphere that …
Black hole shadow and gravitational lensing play important roles in testing gravitational theories in the strong field regime. As the first-order modifications from quantum gravity, the nonlocality can be manifested by black hole shadow and gravitational lensing. For example, the cut-off parameter introduced by nonlocality will affect the shape and size of the black hole shadow, and also affect the deflection angle of light rays. In this paper, we mainly investigate the effects of the nonlocality on the black hole shadow and the gravitational lensing for two types of rotating black holes in no…
We present a method to solve the nonlinear dynamical equations of motion in gravitational theories with fundamental nonlocalities of a certain type. For these specific form factors, which appear in some renormalizable theories, the number of field degrees of freedom and of initial conditions is finite.
The implications of the recent classical nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation for gravitational physics in the Solar System are investigated. In this theory, the nonlocal character of gravity appears to simulate dark matter. Nonlocal gravity in the Newtonian regime involves a reciprocal kernel with three spatial parameters, of which two have already been determined from the rotation curves of spiral galaxies and the internal dynamics of clusters of galaxies. However, the short-range parameter a_0 remains to be determined. In this connection, the nonlocal contribution to …
A nonlocal form of the effective gravitational action could cure the unboundedness of euclidean gravity with Einstein action. On sub-horizon length scales the modified gravitational field equations seem compatible with all present tests of general relativity and post-Newtonian gravity. They induce a difference in the effective Newton's constant between regions of space with vanishing or nonvanishing curvature scalar (or Ricci tensor). In cosmology they may lead to a value $Ω<1$ for the critical density after inflation. The simplest model considered here appears to be in conflict with nucleosyn…
We present extensions of the treatment contained in our recent paper on nonlocal Newtonian cosmology [C. Chicone and B. Mashhoon, J. Math. Phys. 57, 072501 (2016)]. That is, the implications of the recent nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation are further investigated within the regime of Newtonian cosmology. In particular, we treat the nonlocal problem of structure formation for a spherically symmetric expanding dust model and show numerically that as the central density contrast grows, it tends to decrease slowly with radial distance as the universe expands. The nonlocal…
A second gradient generalization of Newtonian gravity is presented within the framework of gradient field theory. Weak nonlocality is introduced via first and second gradients of the gravitational field strength in the Lagrangian density. Gradient generalizations of the Poisson equation of Newtonian gravitation for the gravitational potential and of the generalized Gauss law for the gravitational field strength are presented. Such a gradient modification of Newtonian gravity provides a straightforward regularization of Newtonian gravity removing the classical Newtonian singularities. Finite gr…
We describe a framework for a generalized nonlocal gravity theory inspired by Poincaré gauge theory. Our theory provides a unified description of previous nonlocal extensions of Einstein's theory of gravitation, in particular it allows for a clear geometrical foundation. Furthermore, it incorporates recent simplifications for the ansatz of the nonlocality, which should allow for a systematic study of the impact of nonlocal concepts on observations.
Nonlocal gravity (NLG) is a classical nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation that has been constructed in close analogy with the nonlocal electrodynamics of media. According to NLG, what appears as dark matter in astrophysics and cosmology is in reality the nonlocal aspect of the universal gravitational interaction. We focus here on two main features of the effective dark matter in NLG, namely, (a) the density of effective dark matter in NLG is always finite and therefore cusp-free, and (b) there is less effective dark matter in dwarf galaxies than is generally assumed in …
We show that a class of nonlocal gravity models, proposed to explain current cosmic acceleration without dark energy, passes two major tests: First, they can be defined so as not to alter the, observationally correct, general relativity predictions for gravitationally bound systems. Second, they are stable, ghost-free, with no additional excitations beyond those of general relativity. In this they differ from their, ghostful, localized versions. The systems' initial value constraints are the same as in general relativity, and our nonlocal modifications never convert the original gravitons into…
A nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation is constructed within the framework of the translational gauge theory of gravity. In the linear approximation, the nonlocal theory can be interpreted as linearized general relativity but in the presence of "dark matter" that can be simply expressed as an integral transform of matter. It is shown that this approach can accommodate the Tohline-Kuhn treatment of the astrophysical evidence for dark matter.
We construct a quadratic curvature theory of gravity whose graviton propagator around the Minkowski background respects wordline inversion symmetry, the particle approximation to modular invariance in string theory. This symmetry automatically yields a corresponding gravitational theory that is nonlocal, with the action containing infinite order differential operators. As a consequence, despite being a higher order derivative theory, it is ghost-free and has no degrees of freedom besides the massless spin-$2$ graviton of Einstein's general relativity. By working in the linearised regime we sho…
We analyze the structure of a recent nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation by Mashhoon et al. By means of a covariant technique, we derive an expanded version of the nonlocality tensor which constitutes the theory. At the lowest orders of approximation, this leads to a simplification which sheds light on the fundamental structure of the theory and may prove useful in the search for exact solutions of nonlocal gravity.
We consider nonlocal modification of the Einstein theory of gravity in framework of the pseudo-Riemannian geometry. The nonlocal term has the form $\mathcal{H}(R) \mathcal{F}(\Box)\mathcal {G}(R)$, where $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{G}$ are differentiable functions of the scalar curvature $R,$ and $ \mathcal{F}(\Box)= \displaystyle \sum_{n =0}^{\infty} f_{n}\Box^{n}$ is an analytic function of the d'Alambert operator $\Box .$ Using calculus of variations of the action functional, we derived the corresponding equations of motion. The variation of action is induced by variation of the gravitation…
A complete basis of nonlocal invariants in quantum gravity theory is built to third order in spacetime curvature and matter-field strengths. The nonlocal identities are obtained which reduce this basis for manifolds with dimensionality $2ω<6$. The present results are used in heat-kernel theory, theory of gauge fields and serve as a basis for the model-independent approach to quantum gravity and, in particular, for the study of nonlocal vacuum effects in the gravitational collapse problem.
