Recent years have seen an increasing interest in quantum chaos and related aspects of spatially extended systems, such as spin chains. However, the results are strongly system dependent, generic approaches suggest the presence of many-body localization while analytical calculations for certain system classes, here referred to as the ``self-dual case'', prove adherence to universal (chaotic) spectral behavior. We address these issues studying the level statistics in the vicinity of the latter case, thereby revealing transitions to many-body localization as well as the appearance of several non-standard random-matrix universality classes.
Tunneling between two classically disconnected regular regions can be strongly affected by the presence of a chaotic sea in between. This phenomenon, known as chaos-assisted tunneling, gives rise to large fluctuations of the tunneling rate. Here we study chaos-assisted tunneling in the presence of Anderson localization effects in the chaotic sea. Our results show that the standard tunneling rate distribution is strongly modified by localization, going from the known Cauchy distribution in the ergodic regime to a log-normal distribution in the strongly localized case. We develop an analytical s…
I present the results of extensive numerical simulations which reveal the glassy properties of Anderson localization in dimension two at zero temperature: pinning, avalanches and chaos. I first show that strong localization confines quantum transport along paths which are pinned by disorder but can change abruptly and suddenly (avalanches) when the energy is varied. I determine the roughness exponent $ζ$ characterizing the transverse fluctuations of these paths and find that its value $ζ=2/3$ is the same as for the directed polymer problem. Finally, I characterize the chaos property, namely th…

We study the matrix elements of local operators in the eigenstates of the integrable XXZ chain and of the quantum-chaotic model obtained by locally perturbing the XXZ chain with a magnetic impurity. We show that, at frequencies that are polynomially small in the system size, the behavior of the variances of the off-diagonal matrix elements can be starkly different depending on the operator. In the integrable model we find that, as the frequency $ω\rightarrow0$, the variances are either nonvanishing (generic behavior) or vanishing (for a special class of operators). In the quantum-chaotic model…
We analyze the chaotic dynamics of a one-dimensional discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. This nonintegrable model, ubiquitous in several fields of physics, describes the behavior of an array of coupled complex oscillators with a local nonlinear potential. We explore the Lyapunov spectrum for different values of the energy density, finding that the maximal value of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy is attained at infinite temperatures. Moreover, we revisit the dynamical freezing of relaxation to equilibrium, occurring when large localized states (discrete breathers) are superposed to a generic …
It is believed that the two-dimensional (2D) Anderson model exhibits localization for any nonzero disorder in the thermodynamic limit and it is also well known that the finite-size effects are considerable in the weak disorder limit. Here we numerically study the quantum-chaos to localization transition in the finite 2D Anderson model using standard indicators used in the modern literature such as the level spacing ratio, spectral form factor, variances of observable matrix elements, participation entropy and the eigenstate entanglement entropy. We show that many features of these indicators m…
The non-integrability of quantum systems, often associated with chaotic behavior, is a concept typically applied to cases with a high-dimensional Hilbert space Among different indicators signaling this behavior, the study of the long-time oscillations of the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) appears as a versatile tool, that can be adapted to the case of systems with a small number of degrees of freedom. Using such an approach, we consider the oscillations observed after the scrambling time in the measurement of OTOCs of local operators for an Ising spin chain on a nuclear magnetic resonan…

Out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOC) have been extensively used as a major tool for exploring quantum chaos and also recently, there has been a classical analogue. Studies have been limited to closed systems. In this work, we probe an open classical many-body system, more specifically, a spatially extended driven dissipative chain of coupled Duffing oscillators using the classical OTOC to investigate the spread and growth (decay) of an initially localized perturbation in the chain. Correspondingly, we find three distinct types of dynamical behavior, namely the sustained chaos, transient chao…
Understanding the interplay between different wave excitations, such as phonons and localized solitons, is crucial for developing coarse-grained descriptions of many-body, near-integrable systems. We treat the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) non-linear chain and show numerically that at short timescales, relevant to the largest Lyapunov exponent, it can be modeled as a random perturbation of its integrable approximation -- the Toda chain. At low energies, the separation between two trajectories that start at close proximity is dictated by the interaction between few soliton modes and an intrin…
We re-examine attempts to study the many-body localization transition using measures that are physically natural on the ergodic/quantum chaotic regime of the phase diagram. Using simple scaling arguments and an analysis of various models for which rigorous results are available, we find that these measures can be particularly adversely affected by the strong finite-size effects observed in nearly all numerical studies of many-body localization. This severely impacts their utility in probing the transition and the localized phase. In light of this analysis, we argue that a recent study [Šuntajs…
Characterizing states of matter through the lens of their ergodic properties is a fascinating new direction of research. In the quantum realm, the many-body localization (MBL) was proposed to be the paradigmatic ergodicity breaking phenomenon, which extends the concept of Anderson localization to interacting systems. At the same time, random matrix theory has established a powerful framework for characterizing the onset of quantum chaos and ergodicity (or the absence thereof) in quantum many-body systems. Here we numerically study the spectral statistics of disordered interacting spin chains, …
Previous studies show that, in quantum chaotic and integrable systems, the so-called out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) generically behaves differently at long times, while, it may show similar early growth in one-body systems. In this paper, by means of numerical simulations, it is shown that OTOC has similar early growth in two quantum many-body systems, one integrable and one chaotic.
We use large-scale exact diagonalization to study the quantum Ising chain in a transverse field with long-range power-law interactions decaying with exponent $α$. We numerically study various probes for quantum chaos and eigenstate thermalization {on} the level of eigenvalues and eigenstates. The level-spacing statistics yields a clear sign towards a Wigner-Dyson distribution and therefore towards quantum chaos across all values of $α>0$. Yet, for $α<1$ we find that the microcanonical entropy is nonconvex. This is due to the fact that the spectrum is organized in energetically separated multip…
Out of time ordered correlator (OTOC) is recently introduced as a powerful diagnose for quantum chaos. To go beyond, here we present an analytical solution of OTOC for a non-chaotic many body localized (MBL) system, showing distinct feature from quantum chaos and Anderson localization (AL). The OTOC is found to fall only if the nearest distance between the two operators being shorter than $ξ\ln t$, where $ξ$ is dimensionless localization length. Thereafter, we found an universal power law decay of OTOC as $2^{-ξ\ln t}$, implying an universal logarithmic growth of second Rényi entropy, where $ξ…
Despite tremendous theoretical efforts to understand subtleties of the many-body localization (MBL) transition, many questions remain open, in particular concerning its critical properties. Here we make the key observation that MBL in one dimension is accompanied by a spin freezing mechanism which causes chain breakings in the thermodynamic limit. Using analytical and numerical approaches, we show that such chain breakings directly probe the typical localization length, and that their scaling properties at the MBL transition agree with the Kosterlitz-Thouless scenario predicted by phenomenolog…
Using one-dimensional spin-1/2 systems as prototypes of quantum many-body systems, we study the emergence of quantum chaos. The main purpose of this work is to answer the following question: how does the spin-orbit interaction, as a pure quantum interaction, may lead to the onset of quantum chaos? We consider three integrable spin-1/2 systems: the Ising, the XX, and the XXZ limits, and analyze whether quantum chaos develops or not after the addition of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We find that, depending on the strength of the anisotropy parameter, the answer is positive for the XXZ …
We show that the onset of quantum chaos at infinite temperature in two many-body one-dimensional lattice models, the perturbed spin-1/2 XXZ and Anderson models, is characterized by universal behavior. Specifically, we show that the onset of quantum chaos is marked by maxima of the typical fidelity susceptibilities that scale with the square of the inverse average level spacing, saturating their upper bound, and that the strength of the integrability- or localization-breaking perturbation at these maxima decreases with increasing system size. We also show that the spectral function below the ``…
We show that a quantum dynamical localization effect can be observed in a generic thermalization process of two weakly-coupled chaotic subsystems. Specifically, our model consists of the minimal experimentally relevant subsystems that exhibit chaos, which are 3-site Bose-Hubbard units. Due to the high dimensionality of the composite 6-site system, the quantum localization effect is weak and can not be resolved merely by the breakdown of quantum-to-classical correspondence. Instead, we adopt an intrinsic definition of localization as the memory of initial conditions, that is not related to the …
Operator spreading under unitary time evolution has attracted a lot of attention recently, as a way to probe many-body quantum chaos. While quantities such as out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOC) do distinguish interacting from non-interacting systems, it has remained unclear to what extent they can truly diagnose chaotic {\it vs} integrable dynamics in many-body quantum systems. Here, we analyze operator spreading in generic 1D many-body quantum systems using a combination of matrix product operator (MPO) and analytical techniques, focusing on the operator {\em right-weight}. First, we show…
Thermalization of random-field Heisenberg spin chain is probed by time evolution of density correlation functions. Studying the impacts of average energies of initial product states on dynamics of the system, we provide arguments in favor of the existence of a mobility edge in the large system-size limit.
