We use large-scale exact diagonalization to study the quantum Ising chain in a transverse field with long-range power-law interactions decaying with exponent $α$. We numerically study various probes for quantum chaos and eigenstate thermalization {on} the level of eigenvalues and eigenstates. The level-spacing statistics yields a clear sign towards a Wigner-Dyson distribution and therefore towards quantum chaos across all values of $α>0$. Yet, for $α<1$ we find that the microcanonical entropy is nonconvex. This is due to the fact that the spectrum is organized in energetically separated multiplets for $α<1$. While quantum chaotic behaviour develops within the individual multiplets, many multiplets don't overlap and don't mix with each other, as we analytically and numerically argue. Our findings suggest that a small fraction of the multiplets could persist at low energies for $α\ll 1$ even for large $N$, giving rise to ensemble inequivalence.
We study the effect that randomness has on long-range interacting systems by using the ferromagnetic Ising model with $p$-body interactions in random fields. The case with p=2 yields a phase diagram similar to that of previously studied models and shows known features that inequivalence of the canonical and microcanonical ensembles brings with it, for example negative specific heat in a narrow region of the phase diagram. When p>2, however, the canonical phase diagram is completely different from the microcanonical one. The temperature does not necessarily determine the microcanonical phases u…
In a pioneer work, John Nagle has shown that an Ising chain with competing short and long-range interactions displays second and first-order phase transitions separated by a tricritical point. More recently, it has been claimed that Nagle's model provides an example of the inequivalence between canonical and microcanonical calculations. We then revisit Nagle's original solution, as well as the usual formulation of the problem in a canonical ensemble, which lead to the same results. Also, in contrast to recent claims, we show that an alternative formulation in the microcanonical ensemble, with …
We argue that the chaotic temperature effect predicted in Ising spin glasses should be stronger when one considers continuous (XY, Heisenberg) kind of spins, due to bigger entropic fluctuations. We then discuss the behavior of 3d spin glasses using the Migdal-Kadanoff Renormalization Group for Ising and XY spins, where we show explicitly that the chaotic length scale, the length beyond which equilibrium configurations are completly reshuffled when one changes temperature, could be far smaller for XY than for Ising spins. These results could thus explain why experiments are seeing a stronger re…
We study temperature chaos in a two-dimensional Ising spin glass with random quenched bimodal couplings, by an exact computation of the partition functions on large systems. We study two temperature correlators from the total free energy and from the domain wall free energy: in the second case we detect a chaotic behavior. We determine and discuss the chaos exponent and the fractal dimension of the domain walls.
Previous studies show that, in quantum chaotic and integrable systems, the so-called out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) generically behaves differently at long times, while, it may show similar early growth in one-body systems. In this paper, by means of numerical simulations, it is shown that OTOC has similar early growth in two quantum many-body systems, one integrable and one chaotic.
Domain-wall free-energy $δF$, entropy $δS$, and the correlation function, $C_{\rm temp}$, of $δF$ are measured independently in the four-dimensional $\pm J$ Edwards-Anderson (EA) Ising spin glass. The stiffness exponent $θ$, the fractal dimension of domain walls $d_{\rm s}$ and the chaos exponent $ζ$ are extracted from the finite-size scaling analysis of $δF$, $δS$ and $C_{\rm temp}$ respectively well inside the spin-glass phase. The three exponents are confirmed to satisfy the scaling relation $ζ=d_{\rm s}/2-θ$ derived by the droplet theory within our numerical accuracy. We also study bond ch…
We approximate a 2D Ising spin glass by tiling an infinite square lattice with large identical unit cells. The interactions within the unit cell are random. Each such sample shows one or more critical points. We examine the scaling of the critical temperatures with unit cell size. Due to chaos, the correlations between unit cells can change sign with changing temperature. We also examine the scaling of this chaos. This chaos causes many samples to have multiple phase transitions, because the interaction between adjacent unit cells changes sign within the ordered phases.
The sensitivity of the random field Ising model to small random perturbations of the quenched disorder is studied via exact ground states obtained with a maximum-flow algorithm. In one and two space dimensions we find a mild form of chaos, meaning that the overlap of the old, unperturbed ground state and the new one is smaller than one, but extensive. In three dimensions the rearrangements are marginal (concentrated in the well defined domain walls). Implications for finite temperature variations and experiments are discussed.
We investigate the operator growth dynamics of the transverse field Ising spin chain in one dimension as varying the strength of the longitudinal field. An operator in the Heisenberg picture spreads in the extended Hilbert space. Recently, it has been proposed that the spreading dynamics has a universal feature signaling chaoticity of underlying quantum dynamics. We demonstrate numerically that the operator growth dynamics in the presence of the longitudinal field follows the universal scaling law for one-dimensional chaotic systems. We also find that the operator growth dynamics satisfies a c…
We investigate the effect of short-range correlations on the dynamical phase diagram of quantum many-body systems with long-range interactions. Focusing on Ising spin chains with power-law decaying interactions and accounting for short-range correlations by a cluster mean field theory we show that short-range correlations are responsible for the emergence of a chaotic dynamical region. Analyzing the fine details of the phase diagram, we show that the resulting chaotic dynamics bears close analogies with that of a tossed coin.
Quantum many body systems with long range interactions are known to display many fascinating phenomena experimentally observable in trapped ions, Rydberg atoms and polar molecules. Among these are dynamical phase transitions which occur after an abrupt quench in spin chains with interactions decaying as $r^{-α}$ and whose critical dynamics depend crucially on the power $α$: for systems with $α<1$ the transition is sharp while for $α>1$ it fans out in a chaotic crossover region. In this paper we explore the fate of critical dynamics in Ising chains with long-range interactions when the transver…
We study the onset of eigenstate thermalization in the two-dimensional transverse field Ising model (2D-TFIM) in the square lattice. We consider two non-equivalent Hamiltonians: the ferromagnetic 2D-TFIM and the antiferromagnetic 2D-TFIM in the presence of a uniform longitudinal field. We use full exact diagonalization to examine the behavior of quantum chaos indicators and of the diagonal matrix elements of operators of interest in the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian. A finite size scaling analysis reveals that quantum chaos and eigenstate thermalization occur in those systems whenever the fie…
We study the matrix elements of few-body observables, focusing on the off-diagonal ones, in the eigenstates of the two-dimensional transverse field Ising model. By resolving all symmetries, we relate the onset of quantum chaos to the structure of the matrix elements. In particular, we show that a general result of the theory of random matrices, namely, the value 2 of the ratio of variances (diagonal to off-diagonal) of the matrix elements of Hermitian operators, occurs in the quantum chaotic regime. Furthermore, we explore the behavior of the off-diagonal matrix elements of observables as a fu…
We discuss a method to solve models with long-range interactions in the microcanonical and canonical ensemble. The method closely follows the one introduced by Ellis, Physica D 133, 106 (1999), which uses large deviation techniques. We show how it can be adapted to obtain the solution of a large class of simple models, which can show ensemble inequivalence. The model Hamiltonian can have both discrete (Ising, Potts) and continuous (HMF, Free Electron Laser) state variables. This latter extension gives access to the comparison with dynamics and to the study of non-equilibri um effects. We treat…
It is known that the (exact) renormalization transformations for the one-dimensional Ising model in field can be cast in the form of a logistic map f(x) = 4 x (1 - x) with x a function of the Ising couplings. Remarkably, the line bounding the region of chaotic behaviour in x is precisely that defining the Yang-Lee edge singularity in the Ising model. In this paper we show that the one dimensional q-state Potts model for q greater than or equal to 1 also displays such behaviour. A suitable combination of Potts couplings can again be used to define an x satisfying f(x) = 4 x (1 -x). The Yang-Lee…
We study eigenstate thermalization and related signatures of quantum chaos in the one-dimensional ferromagnetic transverse-field Ising model with power-law interactions. The presence of long-range interactions allows for a finite-temperature phase transition despite the one-dimensional geometry of the model. Unlike previous studies of eigenstate thermalization in non-disordered systems with finite temperature phase transitions, our model possesses sufficiently many energy eigenstates below the critical energy density to allow us to make a definitive statement about the presence of eigenstate t…
Using one-dimensional spin-1/2 systems as prototypes of quantum many-body systems, we study the emergence of quantum chaos. The main purpose of this work is to answer the following question: how does the spin-orbit interaction, as a pure quantum interaction, may lead to the onset of quantum chaos? We consider three integrable spin-1/2 systems: the Ising, the XX, and the XXZ limits, and analyze whether quantum chaos develops or not after the addition of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We find that, depending on the strength of the anisotropy parameter, the answer is positive for the XXZ …
All higher-spin s >= 1/2 Ising spin glasses are studied by renormalization-group theory in spatial dimension d=3. The s-sequence of global phase diagrams, the chaos Lyapunov exponent, and the spin-glass runaway exponent are calculated. It is found that, in d=3, a finite-temperature spin-glass phase occurs for all spin values, including the continuum limit of s \rightarrow \infty. The phase diagrams, with increasing spin s, saturate to a limit value. The spin-glass phase, for all s, exhibits chaotic behavior under rescalings, with the calculated Lyapunov exponent of λ= 1.93 and runaway exponent…
We study dynamics of entanglement in the thermalization process of an isolated quantum many-body system. We propose a simple setup for measuring the propagation speed of entanglement entropy (EE) in numerical simulations and apply it to the integrable/non-integrable spin models in 1D - the transverse Ising (TI) model, the chaotic Ising (CI) model, and the extended chaotic Ising (ECI) model. We find that two distinct time-scales $t^\ast$ and $t_{\rm {diff}}$ arise in the dynamics of EE in the thermalization process: the former represents the time-scale for the saturation of EE and the latter ch…
It was recently conjectured that in generic quantum many-body systems, the spectral density of local operators has the slowest high-frequency decay as permitted by locality. We show that the infinite-temperature version of this "universal operator growth hypothesis" holds for the quantum Ising spin model in $d \ge 2$ dimensions, and for the chaotic Ising chain (with longitudinal and transverse fields) in one dimension. Moreover, the disordered chaotic Ising chain that exhibits many-body localization can have the same high-frequency spectral density decay as thermalizing models. Our argument is…
We study the time evolution of correlation functions, spin current, and local magnetization in an isolated spin-1/2 chain initially prepared in a sharp domain wall state. The results are compared with the level of spatial delocalization of the eigenstates of the system which is measured using the inverse participation ratio. Both integrable and non-integrable regimes are considered. Non-integrability is introduced to the integrable Hamiltonian with nearest neighbor couplings by adding a single site impurity field or by adding next-nearest-neighbor couplings. A monotonic correspondence between …
We investigate the phase transitions of a nonlinear, parallel version of the Ising model, characterized by an antiferromagnetic linear coupling and ferromagnetic nonlinear one. This model arises in problems of opinion formation. The mean-field approximation shows chaotic oscillations, by changing the couplings or the connectivity. The spatial model shows bifurcations in the average magnetization, similar to what seen in the mean-field approximation, induced by the change of the topology, after rewiring short-range to long-range connection, as predicted by the small-world effect. These coherent…
The overlap length of a three-dimensional Ising spin glass on a cubic lattice with Gaussian interactions has been estimated numerically by transfer matrix methods and within a Migdal-Kadanoff renormalization group scheme. We find that the overlap length is large, explaining why it has been difficult to observe spin glass chaos in numerical simulations and experiment.
We study the temperature dependence of energy diffusion in two chaotic gapped quantum spin chains, a tilted-field Ising model and an XZ model, using an open system approach. We introduce an energy imbalance by coupling the chain to thermal baths at its boundary and study the non-equilibrium steady states of the resulting Lindblad dynamics using a matrix product operator ansatz for the density matrix. We define an effective local temperature profile by comparing local reduced density matrices in the steady state to those of a uniform thermal state. We then measure the energy current for a varie…
We study the long-time average of the reduced density matrix (RDM) of a two-level system as the central system, which is locally coupled to a generic many-body quantum chaotic system as the environment, under an overall Schrödinger evolution. The system-environment interaction has a generic form with dissipation. It is shown that, in addition to the exact relations due to unit trace and hermiticity, an approximate relation exists among elements of the averaged RDM computed in the eigenbasis of the central system's Hamiltonian in some interaction regimes. In particular, an explicit expression o…
The Ising spin chain with longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields is often used in studies of quantum chaos, displaying both chaotic and integrable regions in its parameter space. However, even at a strongly chaotic point this model does not exhibit Lyapunov growth of the commutator squared of spin operators, as this observable saturates before exponential growth can manifest itself (even in situations where a spatial suppression factor makes the initial commutator small). We extend this model from the spin 1/2 Ising model to higher spins, demonstrate numerically that a window of exponenti…
Out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOC) have been proposed to characterize quantum chaos in generic systems. However, they can also show interesting behavior in integrable models, resembling the OTOC in chaotic systems in some aspects. Here we study the OTOC for different operators in the exactly-solvable one-dimensional quantum Ising spin chain. The OTOC for spin operators that are local in terms of the Jordan-Wigner fermions has a "shell-like" structure: after the wavefront passes, the OTOC approaches its original value in the long-time limit, showing no signature of scrambling; the approach …
Using an efficient one and two qubit gate simulator, operating on graphical processing units, we investigate ergodic properties of a quantum Ising spin 1/2 model on a two dimensional lattice, which is periodically driven by a $δ$-pulsed transverse magnetic field. We consider three different dynamical properties: (i) level density and (ii) level spacing distribution of the Floquet quasienergy spectrum, as well as (iii) time-averaged autocorrelation function of components of the magnetization. Varying the parameters of the model, we found transitions between ordered (non ergodic) and quantum cha…
The most general and versatile defining feature of quantum chaotic systems is that they possess an energy spectrum with correlations universally described by random matrix theory (RMT). This feature can be exhibited by systems with a well defined classical limit as well as by systems with no classical correspondence, such as locally interacting spins or fermions. Despite great phenomenological success, a general mechanism explaining the emergence of RMT without reference to semiclassical concepts is still missing. Here we provide the example of a quantum many-body system with no semiclassical …
The non-integrability of quantum systems, often associated with chaotic behavior, is a concept typically applied to cases with a high-dimensional Hilbert space Among different indicators signaling this behavior, the study of the long-time oscillations of the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) appears as a versatile tool, that can be adapted to the case of systems with a small number of degrees of freedom. Using such an approach, we consider the oscillations observed after the scrambling time in the measurement of OTOCs of local operators for an Ising spin chain on a nuclear magnetic resonan…
Out-of-time-ordered correlation functions (OTOC's) are presently being extensively debated as quantifiers of dynamical chaos in interacting quantum many-body systems. We argue that in quantum spin and fermionic systems, where all local operators are bounded, an OTOC of local observables is bounded as well and thus its exponential growth is merely transient. As a better measure of quantum chaos in such systems, we propose, and study, the density of the OTOC of extensive sums of local observables, which can exhibit indefinite growth in the thermodynamic limit. We demonstrate this for the kicked …
The random field q-States Potts model is investigated using exact groundstates and finite-temperature transfer matrix calculations. It is found that the domain structure and the Zeeman energy of the domains resembles for general q the random field Ising case (q=2), which is also the expectation based on a random-walk picture of the groundstate. The domain size distribution is exponential, and the scaling of the average domain size with the disorder strength is similar for q arbitrary. The zero-temperature properties are compared to the equilibrium spin states at small temperatures, to investig…
Random matrix ensembles (RME) of quantal statistical Hamiltonian operators, e.g. Gaussian random matrix ensembles (GRME) and Ginibre random matrix ensembles (Ginibre RME), had been applied in literature in study of following quantal statistical systems: molecular systems, nuclear systems, disordered materials, random Ising spin systems, quantal chaotic systems, and two-dimensional electron systems (Wigner-Dyson electrostatic analogy). Measures of quantum chaos and quantum integrability with respect to eigenergies of quantal systems are defined and calculated. Information functional is defined …
Parisi's formal replica-symmetry--breaking (RSB) scheme for mean-field spin glasses has long been interpreted in terms of many pure states organized ultrametrically. However, the early version of this interpretation, as applied to the short-range Edwards-Anderson model, runs into problems because as shown by Newman and Stein (NS) it does not allow for chaotic size dependence, and predicts non-self-averaging that cannot occur. NS proposed the concept of the metastate (a probability distribution over infinite-size Gibbs states in a given sample that captures the effects of chaotic size dependenc…
The spreading of entanglement in out-of-equilibrium quantum systems is currently at the centre of intense interdisciplinary research efforts involving communities with interests ranging from holography to quantum information. Here we provide a constructive and mathematically rigorous method to compute the entanglement dynamics in a class of "maximally chaotic", periodically driven, quantum spin chains. Specifically, we consider the so called "self-dual" kicked Ising chains initialised in a class of separable states and devise a method to compute exactly the time evolution of the entanglement e…
A key goal of quantum chaos is to establish a relationship between widely observed universal spectral fluctuations of clean quantum systems and random matrix theory (RMT). For single particle systems with fully chaotic classical counterparts, the problem has been partly solved by Berry (1985) within the so-called diagonal approximation of semiclassical periodic-orbit sums. Derivation of the full RMT spectral form factor $K(t)$ from semiclassics has been completed only much later in a tour de force by Mueller et al (2004). In recent years, the questions of long-time dynamics at high energies, f…
We investigate the appearance of quantum chaos in a single many-body wave function by analyzing the statistical properties of the eigenvalues of its reduced density matrix $ρ_A$ of a spatial subsystem A. We find that the spectrum of $ρ_A$ is described by a so-called Wishart random matrix, which exhibits universal spectral correlations between eigenvalues separated by distances ranging from one up to many mean level spacings. We use these universal spectral characteristics of $ρ_A$ as a definition of chaos in the wave function. A simple and precise characterization of such correlations is a seg…
