Parisi's formal replica-symmetry--breaking (RSB) scheme for mean-field spin glasses has long been interpreted in terms of many pure states organized ultrametrically. However, the early version of this interpretation, as applied to the short-range Edwards-Anderson model, runs into problems because as shown by Newman and Stein (NS) it does not allow for chaotic size dependence, and predicts non-self-averaging that cannot occur. NS proposed the concept of the metastate (a probability distribution over infinite-size Gibbs states in a given sample that captures the effects of chaotic size dependence) and a non-standard interpretation of the RSB results in which the metastate is non-trivial and is responsible for what was called non-self-averaging. Here we use the effective field theory of RSB, in conjunction with the rigorous definitions of pure states and the metastate in infinite-size systems, to show that the non-standard picture follows directly from the RSB mean-field theory. In addition, the metastate-averaged state possesses power-law correlations throughout the low temperature phase; the corresponding exponent $ζ$ takes the value $4$ according to the field theory in high dimensions $d$, and describes the effective fractal dimension of clusters of spins. Further, the logarithm of the number of pure states in the decomposition of the metastate-averaged state that can be distinguished if only correlations in a window of size $W$ can be observed is of order $W^{d-ζ}$. These results extend the non-standard picture quantitatively; we show that arguments against this scenario are inconclusive.
Structural analysis of Gibbs states and metastates in short-range classical spin glasses: indecomposable metastates, dynamically-frozen states, and metasymmetry
We discuss the metastate, a probability measure on thermodynamic states, and its usefulness in addressing difficult questions pertaining to the statistical mechanics of systems with quenched disorder, in particular short-range spin glasses. The possible low-temperature structures of realistic (i.e., short-range) spin glass models are described, and a number of fundamental open questions are presented.
In this review we define and discuss metastates, mathematical tools with general applicability to thermodynamic systems which are particularly useful when working with disordered or inhomogeneous short-range systems. In an infinite such system there may be many competing thermodynamic states, which can lead to the absence of a straightforward thermodynamic limit of local correlation functions. A metastate is a probability measure on the infinite-volume thermodynamic states that restores the connection between those states and the Gibbs states observed in finite volumes. After introducing the b…
We consider the one-dimensional model of a spin glass with independent Gaussian-distributed random interactions, that have mean zero and variance $1/|i-j|^{2σ}$, between the spins at sites $i$ and $j$ for all $i\neq j$. It is known that, for $σ>1$, there is no phase transition at any non-zero temperature in this model. We prove rigorously that, for $σ>3/2$, any Newman-Stein metastate for the ground states (i.e.\ the frequencies with which distinct ground states are observed in finite size samples in the limit of infinite size, for given disorder) is trivial and unique. In other words, for give…
We consider short-range Ising spin glasses in equilibrium at infinite system size, and prove that, for fixed bond realization and a given Gibbs state drawn from a suitable metastate, each translation- and locally-invariant function (for example, self-overlaps) of a single pure state in the decomposition of the Gibbs state takes the same value for all the pure states in that Gibbs state. We describe several significant applications to spin glasses.
We investigate the question of whether chaotic size dependence occurs on hierarichical lattices and demonstrate that it is not present in these systems. Our results show that the metastate for spin glasses on hierarchical lattices is simple.
In classical finite-range spin systems, especially those with disorder such as spin glasses, a low-temperature Gibbs state may be a mixture of a number of pure or ordered states; the complexity of the Gibbs state has been defined in the past roughly as the logarithm of this number, assuming the question is meaningful in a finite system. As non-trivial mixtures of pure states do not occur in finite size, in a recent paper [Phys. Rev. E 101, 042114 (2020)] Höller and the author introduced a definition of the complexity of an infinite-size Gibbs state as the mutual information between the pure st…
We present a detailed proof of a previously announced result (C.M. Newman and D.L. Stein, Phys. Rev. Lett. v. 84, pp. 3966--3969 (2000)) supporting the absence of multiple (incongruent) ground state pairs for 2D Edwards-Anderson spin glasses (with zero external field and, e.g., Gaussian couplings): if two ground state pairs (chosen from metastates with, e.g., periodic boundary conditions) on the infinite square lattice are distinct, then the dual bonds where they differ form a single doubly-infinite, positive-density domain wall. It is an open problem to prove that such a situation cannot occu…
Understanding the low-temperature pure state structure of spin glasses remains an open problem in the field of statistical mechanics of disordered systems. Here we study Monte Carlo dynamics, performing simulations of the growth of correlations following a quench from infinite temperature to a temperature well below the spin-glass transition temperature $T_c$ for a one-dimensional Ising spin glass model with diluted long-range interactions. In this model, the probability $P_{ij}$ that an edge $\{i,j\}$ has nonvanishing interaction falls as a power-law with chord distance, $P_{ij}\propto1/R_{ij…

We present results of numerical simulations on a one-dimensional Ising spin glass with long-range interactions. Parameters of the model are chosen such that it is a proxy for a short-range spin glass above the upper critical dimension (i.e. in the mean-field regime). The system is quenched to a temperature well below the transition temperature $T_c$ and the growth of correlations is observed. The spatial decay of the correlations at distances less than the dynamic correlation length $ξ(t)$ agrees quantitatively with the predictions of a static theory, the "metastate", evaluated according to th…
In this topical review we discuss the nature of the low-temperature phase in both infinite-ranged and short-ranged spin glasses. We analyze the meaning of pure states in spin glasses, and distinguish between physical, or ``observable'', states and (probably) unphysical, ``invisible'' states. We review replica symmetry breaking, and describe what it would mean in short-ranged spin glasses. We introduce the notion of thermodynamic chaos, which leads to the metastate construct. We apply these tools to short-ranged spin glasses, and conclude that replica symmetry breaking, in any form, cannot desc…
We study a multi-species spin glass system where the density of each species is kept fixed at increasing volumes. The model reduces to the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick one for the single species case. The existence of the thermodynamic limit is proved for all densities values under a convexity condition on the interaction. The thermodynamic properties of the model are investigated and the annealed, the replica symmetric and the replica symmetry breaking bounds are proved using Guerra's scheme. The annealed approximation is proved to be exact under a high temperature condition. We show that the repl…
In these lectures I will review the approach to glasses based on the replica formalism. Many of the physical ideas are very similar to those of older approaches. The replica approach has the advantage of describing in an unified setting both the behaviour near the dynamic transition (mode coupling transition) and near the equilibrium transition (Kauzman transition) that is present in fragile glasses. The replica method may be used to solve simple mean field models, providing explicit examples of systems that may be studied analytically in great details and behave similarly to the experiments. …
We investigate numerically the time dependence of "window" overlaps in a three-dimensional Ising spin glass below its transition temperature after a rapid quench. Using an efficient GPU implementation, we are able to study large systems up to lateral length $L=128$ and up to long times of $t=10^8$ sweeps. We find that the data scales according to the ratio of the window size $W$ to the non-equilibrium coherence length $ξ(t)$. We also show a substantial change in behavior if the system is run for long enough that it globally equilibrates, i.e. $ξ(t) \approx L/2$, where $L$ is the lattice size. …
In this paper we review the predictions of the replica approach on the probability distribution of the overlaps among replicas and on the sample to sample fluctuations of this probability. We stress the role of replica equivalence in obtaining relations which do not depend on the form of replica symmetry breaking. A comparison is done with the results obtained with a different rigorous approach. The role of the ultrametricity and of other algebraic properties in discussed. It is shown that the ultrametric solution can be obtained from a variational principle.
We discuss replica symmetry breaking (RSB) in spin glasses. We update work in this area, from both the analytical and numerical points of view. We give particular attention to the difficulties stressed by Newman and Stein concerning the problem of constructing pure states in spin glass systems. We mainly discuss what happens in finite-dimensional, realistic spin glasses. Together with a detailed review of some of the most important features, facts, data, and phenomena, we present some new theoretical ideas and numerical results. We discuss among others the basic idea of the RSB theory, correla…
In this thesis, we review and examine the replica method from several viewpoints. The replica method is a mathematical technique to calculate general moments of stochastic variables. This method provides a systematic way to evaluate physical quantities and becomes one of the most important tools in the theory of spin glasses and in the related discipline including information processing tasks. In spite of the effectiveness of the replica method, it is known that several problems exist in the procedures of the method itself. The replica symmetry breaking is the central topic of those problems a…
We prove the impossibility of recent attempts to decouple the Replica Symmetry Breaking (RSB) picture for finite-dimensional spin glasses from the existence of many thermodynamic (i.e., infinite-volume) pure states while preserving another signature RSB feature --- space filling relative domain walls between different finite-volume states. Thus revisions of the notion of pure states cannot shield the RSB picture from the internal contradictions that rule out its physical correctness in finite dimensions at low temperature in large finite volume.
We define modulated replica symmetry breaking (RSB)-schemes which combine tree- and wave-like structures. A modulated scheme and unmodulated RSB are applied at 1-step level to a semiconductor model with antiferromagnetic Korenblit-Shender interaction. By comparison of the free energies we find evidence that a T=0 phase transition in the ferrimagnetic phase leads to a transition between the different RSB-schemes. An embedding factor of Parisi block matrices with sublattice-asymmetrical size is employed as a new variational parameter in the modulated scheme.
The role of reflection symmetry breaking for the character of the appearance of replica symmetric spin glass state is investigated. We establish the following symmetry rule for classical systems with one order parameter in the replica symmetric mean field approximation. If in the pure system the transition to the ordered phase is of the second order, then in the corresponding random system the glass regime appears as a result of a phase transition; if the transition in the pure system is of the first order, then glass and ordered regimes grow continuously in the random system on cooling.
An one-step replica-symmetry-breaking solution for finite connectivity spin-glass models with K body interaction is constructed at finite temperature using the replica method and thermodynamic constraints. In the absence of external fields, this construction provides a general extension of replica symmetric solution at finite replica number to one-step replica-symmetry-breaking solution. It is found that this result is formally equivalent to that of the one-step replica-symmetry-breaking cavity method. To confirm the validity of the obtained solution, Monte Carlo simulations are performed for …
We compute numerically small window overlaps in the three dimensional Edwards Anderson spin glass. We show that they behave in the way implied by the Replica Symmetry Breaking Ansatz, that they do not qualitatively differ from the full volume overlap and do not tend to a trivial function when increasing the lattice volume. On the contrary we show they are affected by small finite volume effects, and are interesting tools for the study of the features of the spin glass phase.
The mathematically correct computation of the spin glasses free energy in the infinite range limit crowns 25 years of mathematic efforts in solving this model. The exact solution of the model was found many years ago by using a heuristic approach; the results coming from the heuristic approach were crucial in deriving the mathematical results. The mathematical tools used in the rigorous approach are quite different from those of the heuristic approach. In this note we will review the heuristic approach to spin glasses in the light of the rigorous results; we will also discuss some conjectures …
In a finite-connectivity spin-glass at the zero-temperature limit, long-range correlations exist among the unfrozen vertices (whose spin values being non-fixed). Such long-range frustrations are partially removed through the first-step replica-symmetry-broken (1RSB) cavity theory, but residual long-range frustrations may still persist in this mean-field solution. By way of population dynamics, here we perform a perturbation-percolation analysis to calculate the magnitude of long-range frustrations in the 1RSB solution of a given spin-glass system. We study two well-studied model systems, the m…
We study the thermodynamics of discrete breathers by transforming a lattice of weakly coupled nonlinear oscillators into an effective Ising pseudospin model. We introduce a replica ensemble and investigate the effective system susceptibilities through the replica overlap distribution. We find that a transition occurs at a given temperature to a new phase characterized by a slow decay of the relevant correlation functions. Comparison of long time pseudospin correlation functions to maximal replica overlap demonstrates that the high temperature phase has glassy-like properties induced by short r…
We comment on recent numerical experiments by G.Hed and E.Domany [cond-mat/0608535v2] on the quenched equilibrium state of the Edwards-Anderson spin glass model. The rigorous proof of overlap identities related to replica equivalence shows that the observed violations of those identities on finite size systems must vanish in the thermodynamic limit. See also the successive version cond-mat/0608535v4
Using an effective potential approach, we present a replica instanton theory for the dynamics of entropic droplets in glassy systems. Replica symmetry breaking in the droplet interface leads to a length scale dependent reduction of the droplet surface tension and changes the character of the dynamical heterogeneity and activated dynamics in glasses.
Expansion for the free energy functionals of the Potts spin glass models with 3, 4 and 5 states up to the fourth order in $δq_{αβ}$ around the replica symmetric solution (RS) is investigated using a special quadrupole-like representation. The temperature dependence of the 1RSB order parameters is obtained in the vicinity of the point $T=T_c$ where the RS solution becomes unstable. The crossover from continuous to jumpwise behavior with increasing of number of states is derived analytically. The comparison is made of the free energy expansion for the Potts spin glass with that for other models.
The sample-to-sample fluctuations of the free energy in finite-dimensional Ising spin glasses are calculated, using the replica method, from higher order terms in the replica number $n$. It is shown that the Parisi symmetry breaking scheme does not give the correct answers for these higher order terms. A modified symmetry breaking scheme with the same stability is shown to resolve the problem.
We study the violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem in the three and four dimensional Gaussian Ising spin glasses using on and off equilibrium simulations. We have characterized numerically the function X(C) that determine the violation and we have studied its scaling properties. Moreover we have computed the function x(C) which characterize the breaking of the replica symmetry directly from equilibrium simulations. The two functions are numerically equal and in this way we have established that the conjectured connection between the violation of fluctuation dissipation theorem in th…
We address the question of geometrical as well as energetic properties of local excitations in mean field Ising spin glasses. We study analytically the Random Energy Model and numerically a dilute mean field model, first on tree-like graphs, equivalent to a replica symmetric computation, and then directly on finite connectivity random lattices. In the first model, characterized by a discontinuous replica symmetry breaking, we found that the energy of finite volume excitation is infinite whereas in the dilute mean field model, described by a continuous replica symmetry breaking, it slowly decre…

Symmetry considerations and a direct, Hubbard-Stratonovich type, derivation are used to construct a replica field-theory relevant to the study of the spin glass transition of short range models in a magnetic field. A mean-field treatment reveals that two different types of transitions exist, whenever the replica number n is kept larger than zero. The Sherrington-Kirkpatrick critical point in zero magnetic field between the paramagnet and replica magnet (a replica symmetric phase with a nonzero spin glass order parameter) separates from the de Almeida-Thouless line, along which replica symmetry…
We study a three-dimensional plaquette spin model whose low temperature dynamics is glassy, due to localised defects and effective kinetic constraints. While the thermodynamics of this system is smooth at all temperatures, we show that coupling it to a second system with a fixed (quenched) configuration can lead to a phase transition, at finite coupling. The order parameter is the overlap between the copies, and the transition is between phases of low and high overlap. We find critical points whose properties are consistent with random-field Ising universality. We analyse the interfacial free …
We present a first principle scheme to compute the rigidity, i. e. the shear-modulus of structural glasses at finite temperatures using the cloned liquid theory, which combines the replica theory and the liquid theory. With the aid of the replica method which enables disentanglement of thermal fluctuations in liquids into intra-state and inter-state fluctuations, we extract the rigidity of metastable amorphous solid states in the supercooled liquid and glass phases. The result can be understood intuitively without replicas. As a test case, we apply the scheme to the supercooled and glassy stat…
We compute the shear modulus of amorphous hard and soft spheres, using the exact solution in infinite spatial dimensions that has been developed recently. We characterize the behavior of this observable in the whole phase diagram, and in particular around the glass and jamming transitions. Our results are consistent with other theoretical approaches, that are unified within this general picture, and they are also consistent with numerical and experimental results. Furthermore, we discuss some properties of the out-of-equilibrium dynamics after a deep quench close to the jamming transition, and…
We analyze thermodynamic behavior of general $n$-component mean-field spin glass models in order to identify origin of the hierarchical structure of the order parameters from the replica-symmetry breaking solution. We derive a configurationally dependent free energy with local magnetizations and averaged local susceptibilities as order parameters. On an example of the replicated Ising spin glass we demonstrate that the hierarchy of order parameters in mean-field models results from the structure of inter-replica susceptibilities. These susceptibilities serve for lifting the degeneracy due to t…
We discuss a phase transition in spin glass models which have been rarely considered in the past, namely the phase transition that may take place when two real replicas are forced to be at a larger distance (i.e. at a smaller overlap) than the typical one. In the first part of the work, by solving analytically the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model in a field close to its critical point, we show that even in a paramagnetic phase the forcing of two real replicas to an overlap small enough leads the model to a phase transition where the symmetry between replicas is spontaneously broken. More importan…
We study spin glasses on random lattices with finite connectivity. In the infinite connectivity limit they reduce to the Sherrington Kirkpatrick model. In this paper we investigate the expansion around the high connectivity limit. Within the replica symmetry breaking scheme at two steps, we compute the free energy at the first order in the expansion in inverse powers of the average connectivity (z), both for the fixed connectivity and for the fluctuating connectivity random lattices. It is well known that the coefficient of the 1/z correction for the free energy is divergent at low temperature…

Short-time dynamic scaling behavior of the 3D $\pm J$ Ising spin glass is studied by Monte Carlo methods. Starting the replicas with independent initial configurations with a small pseudo magnetization, the dynamic evolution of the overlap q(t) between two replicas is measured. The initial increase of the overlap q(t) is observed and the corresponding exponent $θ'$ is obtained. From the scaling relation $λ=d/z-θ'$, the dynamic exponent z is estimated.
We investigate partition-function zeros of the many-body interacting spherical spin glass, the so-called $p$-spin spherical model, with respect to the complex temperature in the thermodynamic limit. We use the replica method and extend the procedure of the replica symmetry breaking ansatz to be applicable in the complex-parameter case. We derive the phase diagrams in the complex-temperature plane and calculate the density of zeros in each phase. Near the imaginary axis away from the origin, there is a replica symmetric phase having a large density. On the other hand, we observe no density in t…
In 1986, Swendsen and Wang proposed a replica Monte Carlo algorithm for spin glasses [Phys. Rev. Lett. 57 (1986) 2607]. Two important ingredients are present, (1) the use of a collection of systems (replicas) at different of temperatures, but with the same random couplings, (2) defining and flipping clusters. Exchange of information between the systems is facilitated by fixing the tau spin (tau=sigma^1σ^2) and flipping the two neighboring systems simultaneously. In this talk, we discuss this algorithm and its relationship to replica exchange (also known as parallel tempering) and Houdayer's cl…

We provide a compact derivation of the static and dynamic equations for infinite-dimensional particle systems in the liquid and glass phases. The static derivation is based on the introduction of an "auxiliary" disorder and the use of the replica method. The dynamic derivation is based on the general analogy between replicas and the supersymmetric formulation of dynamics. We show that static and dynamic results are consistent, and follow the Random First Order Transition scenario of mean field disordered glassy systems.

Statistical learning theory provides bounds of the generalization gap, using in particular the Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension and the Rademacher complexity. An alternative approach, mainly studied in the statistical physics literature, is the study of generalization in simple synthetic-data models. Here we discuss the connections between these approaches and focus on the link between the Rademacher complexity in statistical learning and the theories of generalization for typical-case synthetic models from statistical physics, involving quantities known as Gardner capacity and ground state energ…
We use the negative replica method, which was originally developed for the study of overfrustation in disordered system, to investigate the statistical behaviour of the cost function of minimax games. These games are treated as hierarchical statistical mechanical systems, in which one of the components is at negative temperature.
This paper gives an introduction and brief overview of some of our recent work on the equilibrium thermodynamics of glasses. We have focused onto first principle computations in simple fragile glasses, starting from the two body interatomic potential. A replica formulation translates this problem into that of a gas of interacting molecules, each molecule being built of $m$ atoms, and having a gyration radius (related to the cage size) which vanishes at zero temperature. We use a small cage expansion, valid at low temperatures, which allows to compute the cage size, the specific heat (which fol…
We introduce a new parameter to investigate replica symmetry breaking transitions using finite-size scaling methods. Based on exact equalities initially derived by F. Guerra this parameter is a direct check of the self-averaging character of the spin-glass order parameter. This new parameter can be used to study models with time reversal symmetry but its greatest interest concerns models where this symmetry is absent. We apply the method to long-range and short-range Ising spin glasses with and without magnetic field as well as short-range multispin interaction spin glasses.
The low-temperature phase of discontinuous mean-field spin glasses is generally described by a one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) Ansatz. The Gardner transition, i.e. a very-low-temperature phase transition to a full replica symmetry breaking (FRSB) phase, is often regarded as an inessential, and somehow exotic phenomenon. In this paper we show that the metastable states which are relevant for the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of such systems are always in a FRSB phase. The only exceptions are (to the best of our knowledge) the p-spin spherical model and the random energy model (REM). We …
We compute and analyze couples of ground states of 3D spin glasses before and after applying a volume perturbation which adds to the Hamiltonian a repulsion from the true ground state. The physical picture based on Replica Symmetry Breaking is in excellent agreement with the observed behavior.
