The perovskite ruthenate has attracted considerable interest due to reports of possible non-Fermi-liquid behavior and its proximity to a magnetic quantum critical point, yet its ground state and electronic structure remain enigmatic. Here we report the first measurements of the Fermi surface and quasiparticle dispersion in CaRuO3 through a combination of oxide molecular beam epitaxy and in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our results reveal a complex and anisotropic Fermi surface consisting of small electron pockets and straight segments, consistent with the bulk orthorhombic crystal structure with large octahedral rotations. We observe a strongly band-dependent mass renormalization, with prominent heavy quasiparticle bands which lie close to the Fermi energy and exhibit strong temperature dependence. These results are consistent with a heavy Fermi liquid with a complex Fermiology and small hybridization gaps near the Fermi energy. Our results provide a unified framework for explaining previous experimental results on CaRuO3, such as its unusual optical conductivity, and demonstrate the importance of octahedral rotations in determining the quasiparticle band structure, and electron correlations in complex transition metal oxides.
In this article we present high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) spectra of the heavy-fermion superconductor URu$_2$Si$_2$. Measurements as a function of both excitation energy and temperature allow us to disentangle a variety of spectral features, revealing the evolution of the low energy electronic structure across the hidden order transition. Already above the hidden order transition our measurements reveal the existence of weakly dispersive states below the Fermi level that exhibit a large scattering rate. Upon entering the hidden order phase, these states transform into a c…
Magneto-electric multipoles, which are odd under both space-inversion $\cal I$ and time-reversal $\cal T$ symmetries, are fundamental in understanding and characterizing magneto-electric materials. However, the detection of these magneto-electric multipoles is often not straightforward as they remain "hidden" in conventional experiments in part since many magneto-electrics exhibit combined $\cal IT$ symmetry. In the present work, we show that the anti-symmetric Compton profile is a unique signature for all the magneto-electric multipoles, since the asymmetric magnetization density of the magne…
Shubnikov-de Haas measurements of high quality URu2Si2 single crystals reveal two previously unobserved Fermi surface branches in the so-called hidden order phase. Therefore about 55% of the enhanced mass is now detected. Under pressure in the antiferromagnetic state, the Shubnikov-de Haas frequencies for magnetic fields applied along the crystalline c axis show little change compared with the zero pressure data. This implies a similar Fermi surface in both the hidden order and antiferromagnetic states, which strongly suggests that the lattice doubling in the antiferromagnetic phase due to the…
Solids with strong electron correlations generally develop exotic phases of electron matter at low temperatures. Among such systems, the heavy-fermion semi-metal URu2Si2 presents an enigmatic transition at To = 17.5 K to a `hidden order' state whose order parameter remains unknown after 23 years of intense research. Various experiments point to the reconstruction and partial gapping of the Fermi surface when the hidden-order establishes. However, up to now, the question of how this transition affects the electronic spectrum at the Fermi surface has not been directly addressed by a spectroscopi…
This paper reports recent progress of ultrasonic measurements on URu$_2$Si$_2$, including ultrasonic measurements under hydrostatic pressure, in pulsed-magnetic fields, and the effect of Rh-substitution. The observed changes of the elastic responses shed light on the orthorhombic-lattice instability with $Γ_3$-symmetry existing within the hidden order and the hybridized 5$f$-electron states of URu$_2$Si$_2$.
URu$_2$Si$_2$ is surely one of the most mysterious of the heavy-fermion compounds. Despite more than twenty years of experimental and theoretical works, the order parameter of the transition at $T_0 = 17.5$ K is still unknown. The state below $T_0$ remains called "hidden-order phase" and the stakes are still to identify the energy scales driving the system to this phase. We present new magnetoresistivity and magnetization measurements performed on very-high-quality single crystals in pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T. We show that the transition to the hidden-order state in URu$_2$Si$_2$ is in…
We show that a two-dimensional (2D) isotropic Fermi liquid harbors two new types of collective modes, driven by quantum fluctuations, in addition to conventional zero sound: "hidden" and "mirage" modes. The hidden modes occur for relatively weak attractive interaction both in the charge and spin channels with any angular momentum $l$. Instead of being conventional damped resonances within the particle-hole continuum, the hidden modes propagate at velocities larger than the Fermi velocity and have infinitesimally small damping in the clean limit, but are invisible to spectroscopic probes. The m…
We report thermoelectric measurements of the low carrier heavy fermion compound URu2Si2 at high fields up to 34T and at low temperatures down to 500mK. The field dependence of the thermoelectric power (TEP) and the Nernst signal shows successive anomalies deep inside the hidden order (HO) phase. The field position of these anomalies correspond to different changes in the Shubnikov-de Haas frequencies and effective masses around 12 T, 17 T, 23 T and 30 T. These results indicate successive reconstructions of the Fermi surface, which imply electronic phase transitions well within the HO phase.
An intense investigation of possible non-Fermi liquid states of matter has been inspired by two of the most intriguing phenomena discovered in the past quarter century, namely high temperature superconductivity and the fractional quantum Hall effect. Despite enormous conceptual strides, these two fields have developed largely along separate paths. Two widely employed theories are the resonating valence bond theory for high temperature superconductivity and the composite fermion theory for the fractional quantum Hall effect. The goal of this "perspective" article is to note that they subscribe …
We report soft point-contact spectroscopy studies of URu2Si2 both in the hidder order (HO) and the large-moment antiferromagnetic (LMAF) states accessed by pressure. In the HO state at ambient pressure, the spectroscopy shows two asymmetric peaks around the Fermi energy that emerge below the hidden order temperature T_{HO}. In the LMAF state at higher pressures, the spectra are remarkably similar to those in the HO state, indicating a similar Fermi surface gapping in the HO and LMAF states and providing a new clue to unraveling the puzzling HO state.

We report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments probing deep into the hidden order (HO) state of URu2Si2, utilizing tunable photon energies with sufficient energy and momentum resolution to detect the near Fermi surface (FS) behavior. Our results reveal: (i) the full itinerancy of the 5f electrons; (ii) the crucial three-dimensional (3D) k-space nature of the FS and its critical nesting vectors, in good comparison with density-functional theory calculations, and (iii) the existence of hot-spot lines and pairing of states at the FS, leading to FS gapping in the HO phase.
We investigate the transport properties of a correlated metal within dynamical mean field theory. Canonical Fermi liquid behavior emerges only below a very low temperature scale $T_{FL}$. Surprisingly the quasiparticle scattering rate follows a quadratic temperature dependence up to much higher temperatures and crosses over to saturated behavior around a temperature scale $T_{sat}$. We identify these quasiparticles as constituents of the hidden Fermi liquid. The non-Fermi liquid transport above $T_{FL}$, in particular the linear-in-$T$ resistivity, is shown to be a result of a strongly tempera…
Spontaneous, collective ordering of electronic degrees of freedom leads to second-order phase transitions that are characterized by an order parameter. The notion "hidden order" (HO) has recently been used for a variety of materials where a clear phase transition occurs to a phase without a known order parameter. The prototype example is the heavy-fermion compound URu2Si2 where a mysterious HO transition occurs at 17.5K. For more than twenty years this system has been studied theoretically and experimentally without a firm grasp of the underlying physics. Using state-of-the-art density-functio…
In this paper we provide theoretical LDA+DMFT support of recent ARPES experimental observation of the so called hidden hole like band and corresponding hidden Fermi surface sheet near $Γ$-point in the K$_{0.62}$Fe$_{1.7}$Se$_2$ compound. To some extent this is a solution to the long-standing riddle of Fermi surface absence around $Γ$-point in the K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ class of iron chalcogenide superconductors. In accordance with the experimental data Fermi surface was found near the $Γ$-point within LDA+DMFT calculations. Based on the LDA+DMFT analysis in this paper it is shown that the large…
Separating between ordinary (OHE) and anomalous (AHE) Hall effect in the paramagnetic phase of Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Si reveals OHE sign inversion associated with the hidden quantum critical (QC) point $x^*\sim0.11$. The semimetallic behavior at intermediate Fe content leads to verifiable predictions in the field of fermiology, magnetic interactions and QC in Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Si. The change of electron and hole concentrations is considered as a driving force for tuning the QC regime in Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Si via modifying of RKKY exchange interaction within the Heisenberg model of magnetism.
We study a realistic Kondo model for crystal field quartet ground states having magnetic and non-magnetic (quadrupolar) exchange couplings with conduction electrons, using the numerical renormalization group method. We focus on a local effect dependent on singlet excited states coupled to the quartet, which reduces the non-magnetic coupling significantly and drives non-Fermi liquid behavior observed in the calculated quadrupolar susceptibility. A crossover from the non-Fermi liquid state to the Fermi liquid state is characterized by a small energy scale very sensitive to the non-magnetic coupl…
In low-dimensional metallic systems, lattice distortion is usually coupled to a density-wave-like electronic instability due to Fermi surface nesting (FSN) and strong electron-phonon coupling. However, the ordering of other electronic degrees of freedom can also occur simultaneously with the lattice distortion thus challenges the aforementioned prevailing scenario. Recently, a hidden electronic reconstruction beyond FSN was revealed in a layered metallic compound BaTi2As2O below the structural transition temperature Ts ~ 200 K. The nature of this hidden electronic instability is under strong d…
We investigate the low energy properties of a correlated metal in the proximity of a Mott insulator within the Hubbard model in two dimensions. We introduce a new version of the Cellular Dynamical Mean Field Theory using cumulants as the basic irreducible objects. These are used for re-constructing the lattice quantities from their cluster counterparts. The zero temperature one particle Green's function is characterized by the appearance of lines of zeros, in addition to a Fermi surface which changes topology as a function of doping. We show that these features are intimately connected to the …
The fate of exotic spin liquid states with fractionalized excitations at finite temperature ($T$) is of great interest, since signatures of fractionalization manifest in finite-temperature ($T$) dynamics in real systems, above the tiny magnetic ordering scales. Here, we study a Jordan-Wigner fermionized Kitaev spin liquid at finite $T$ employing combined Exact diagonalization and Monte Carlo simulation methods. We uncover $(i)$ checkerboard or stripy-ordered flux crystals depending on density of flux, and $(ii)$ establish, surprisingly, that: $(a)$ the finite-$T$ version of the $T=0$ transitio…
The strange metal phase of optimally and overdoped cuprates exhibits a number of anomalous transport properties: unsaturating linear T resistivity, distinct relaxation times for Hall angle and resistivity, temperature dependent anisotropic relaxation times, and a characteristic crossover from supposed Fermi Liquid to linear T behavior. All receive natural explanations and quantitative fits in terms of the Hidden Fermi Liquid theory.
We demonstrate that the volume of the Fermi surface, measured very precisely using de Haas-van Alphen oscillations, can be used to probe changes in the nature and occupancy of localized electronic states. In systems with unconventional ordered states, this allows an underlying electronic order parameter to be followed to very low temperatures. We describe this effect in the field-induced antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) ordered phase of PrOs4Sb12, a heavy fermion intermetallic compound. We find that the phase of de Haas-van Alphen oscillations is sensitively coupled, through the Fermi volume, to the…
The temperature-dependent evolution pattern of 5f electrons helps to elucidate the long-standing itinerant-localized dual nature in plutonium-based compounds. In this work, we investigate the correlated electronic states of PuIn3 dependence on temperature by using a combination of the density functional theory and the dynamical mean-field theory. Not only the experimental photoemission spectroscopy is correctly reproduced, but also a possible hidden 5f itinerant-localized crossover is identified. Moreover, it is found that the quasiparticle multiplets from the many-body transitions gradually e…
We have observed the superfluid phase transition in a strongly interacting Fermi gas via high-precision measurements of the local compressibility, density and pressure down to near-zero entropy. Our data completely determine the universal thermodynamics of strongly interacting fermions without any fit or external thermometer. The onset of superfluidity is observed in the compressibility, the chemical potential, the entropy, and the heat capacity. In particular, the heat capacity displays a characteristic lambda-like feature at the critical temperature of $T_c/T_F = 0.167(13)$. This is the firs…
We report angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) spectra of $η$-Mo$_4$O$_{11}$, a layered metal that undergoes two charge density wave (CDW) transitions at 109 K and 30 K. We have directly observed the ``hidden one-dimensional (hidden-1d)'' Fermi surface and an anisotropic gap opening associated with the 109 K transition, in agreement with the band theoretical description of the CDW transition. In addition, as in other hidden-1d materials such as NaMo$_6$O$_{17}$, the ARPES line shapes show certain anomalies, which we discuss in terms of non-Fermi liquid physics and possible roles of disorder.
The superconducting order parameter of the first heavy-fermion superconductor CeCu2Si2 is currently under debate. A key ingredient to understand its superconductivity and physical properties is the quasiparticle dispersion and Fermi surface, which remains elusive experimentally. Here we present measurements from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our results emphasize the key role played by the Ce 4f electrons for the low-temperature Fermi surface, highlighting a band-dependent conduction-f electron hybridization. In particular, we find a very heavy quasi-two-dimensional electron band …
A topology-intrinsic connection between the stabilities of Fermi surfaces (FSs) and topological insulators/superconductors (TIs/TSCs) is revealed. In particular, a one-to-one relation between the topological types of FSs and TIs/TSCs is rigorously derived; combining it with a well-established topological theory of FSs, we produce a complete table illustrating precisely topological types of all TIs/TSCs, while a valid part of it was postulated before. Moreover, we propose and prove a general index theorem that relates the topological charge of FSs on the natural boundary of a strong TI/TSC to i…
Hidden Fermi liquid theory explicitly accounts for the effects of Gutzwiller projection in the t-J Hamiltonian, widely believed to contain the essential physics of the high-Tc superconductors. We derive expressions for the entire "strange metal", normal state relating angle-resolved photoemission, resistivity, Hall angle, and by generalizing the formalism to include the Fermi surface topology - angle-dependent magnetoresistance. We show this theory to be the first self-consistent description for the normal state of the cuprates based on transparent, fundamental assumptions. Our well-defined fo…
General scaling arguments, and the behavior of the thermal entropy density, are shown to lead to an infrared metric holographically representing a compressible state with hidden Fermi surfaces. This metric is characterized by a general dynamic critical exponent, z, and a specific hyperscaling violation exponent, θ. The same metric exhibits a logarithmic violation of the area law of entanglement entropy, as shown recently by Ogawa et al. (arXiv:1111.1023). We study the dependence of the entanglement entropy on the shape of the entangling region(s), on the total charge density, on temperature, a…
I present a formalism for dealing directly with the effects of the Gutzwiller projection, which is implicit in the t-J model widely believed to underly the phenomenology of the high-Tc cuprates. I suggest that a true BCS condensation from a Fermi liquid state takes place, but in the unphysical space prior to projection. The theory which results upon projection does not follow conventional rules of diagram theory and in fact in the normal state is a Z=0 non-Fermi liquid. Anomalous properties of this strange metal normal state are predicted and compared to experiments.
We show that the Bose-Fermi Kondo model (BFKM), which may find applicability both to certain dissipative mesoscopic qubit devices and to heavy fermion systems described by the Kondo lattice model, can be mapped exactly onto the Caldeira-Leggett model. This mapping requires an ohmic bosonic bath and an Ising-type coupling between the latter and the impurity spin. This allows us to conclude unambiguously that there is an emergent Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transition in the BFKM with an ohmic bosonic bath. By applying a bosonic numerical renormalization group approach, we thoroughly probe…
Systematic analysis of the planar resistivity, Hall effect and cotangent of the Hall angle for the electron-doped cuprates reveals underlying Fermi-liquid behavior even deep in the antiferromagnetic part of the phase diagram. The transport scattering rate exhibits a quadratic temperature dependence, and is nearly independent of doping, compound and carrier type (electrons vs. holes), and hence universal. Our analysis moreover indicates that the material-specific resistivity upturn at low temperatures and low doping has the same origin in both electron- and hole-doped cuprates.
The temperature-dependent electronic structures of heavy fermion compound CeB$_{6}$ are investigated thoroughly by means of the combination of density functional theory and single-site dynamical mean-field theory. The band structure, density of states, and 4$f$ valence state fluctuation of CeB$_{6}$ are calculated in a broad temperature range of 10 $\sim$ 120 K. Overall, the 4$f$ electrons remain incoherent, approximately irrespective of the temperature. However, we find that these observables exhibit some unusual features near 20 K. In addition, the evolution of 4$f$ orbital occupancy, total …
Berg, Metlitski and Sachdev, Science 338, 1606 (2012), have shown that the exchange of hidden spin fluctuations by conduction electrons with two orbitals can result in high-temperature superconductivity in copper-oxide materials. We introduce a similar model for high-temperature iron-selenide superconductors that are electron doped. Conduction electrons carry the minimal 3d xz and 3d yz iron-atom orbitals. Low-energy hidden spin fluctuations at the checkerboard wavevector Q_AF result from nested Fermi surfaces at the center and at the corner of the unfolded (one-iron) Brillouin zone. Magnetic …
We scrutinize the real-frequency structure of the self-energy in the superconducting state of the attractive Hubbard model within the dynamical mean-field theory. Within the strong-coupling superconducting phase which has been understood in terms of the Bose-Einstein condensation in the literature, we find two qualitatively different regions crossing over each other. In one region close to zero temperature, the self-energy depends on the frequency only weakly at low energy. On the other hand, in the region close to the critical temperature, the self-energy shows a pole structure. The latter re…
For interacting 2D electrons in the presence of magnetic field at half filling, the system forms a `composite Fermi liquid(CFL)' with emergent Fermi surface and exhibits metallic behavior, based on the standard Halperin, Lee, and Read(HLR) field theory. Recently, Son introduces a composite Dirac theory as the low energy effective description of Half-filled Landau Level. Such theory exhibits particle-hole symmetry and the underlying composite Fermi surface displays a robust $π$ Berry phase. In this paper, we start from the bilayer Half-filled Landau Level system where the two composite Fermi su…
An unconventional pairing mechanism in the heavy-fermion material $\mathrm{URu_{2}Si_{2}}$ is studied. We propose a mixed singlet-triplet $d$-density wave to be the hidden-order state in $\mathrm{URu_{2}Si_{2}}$. The exotic order is topologically nontrivial and supports a charge $2e$ skyrmionic spin texture, which is assumed to fractionalize into merons and antimerons at the deconfined quantum critical point. The interaction between these fractional particles results in a (pseudo)spin-singlet chiral $d$-wave superconducting state, which breaks time reversal symmetry. Therefore, it is highly li…

We studied two BaFe2-xNixAs2 (Ni-doped Ba-122) single crystals at two dfferent doping levels (underdoped and optimally doped) using an optical spectroscopic technique. The underdoped sample shows a magnetic phase transition around 80 K. We analyze the data with a Drude-Lorentz model with two Drude components (D1 and D2). It is known that the narrow D1 component originates from electron carriers in the electron-pockets and the broad D2 mode is from hole carriers in the hole-pockets. While the plasma frequencies of both Drude components and the static scattering rate of the broad D2 component sh…
