The current state of knowledge of genus g orientable crossing numbers of complete graphs through K11 is reviewed. It is shown that cr3(K10)=3, cr3(K11)<=14, and cr4(K11)=4. It is established with the aid of an algorithm that there are precisely two non-isomorphic embeddings of K9 with a hexagon with all its vertices distinct on a surface of genus 3.
In this work for the first time we enumerate unlabelled maps on orientable genus $g$ surfaces with respect to all homeomorphisms, including both orientation-preserving and orientation-reversing. We show that in the latter case as an intermediate step one has to enumerate rooted maps of a special kind (quotient maps) on orientable and non-orientable surfaces possibly having a boundary and a certain number of branch points. In this work we develop a special technique for enumerating such maps.
The Carrell-Chapuy recurrence formulas dramatically improve the efficiency of counting orientable rooted maps by genus, either by number of edges alone or by number of edges and vertices. This paper presents an implementation of these formulas with three applications: the computation of an explicit rational expression for the ordinary generating functions of rooted map numbers with a given positive genus, the construction of large tables of rooted map numbers, and the use of these tables, together with the method of A. Mednykh and R. Nedela, to count unrooted maps by genus and number of edges …
Gross, Mansour and Tucker introduced the partial-dual orientable genus polynomial and the partial-dual Euler genus polynomial. They showed that the partial-dual genus polynomial for an orientable ribbon graph is interpolating and gave an analogous conjecture: The partial-dual Euler-genus polynomial for any non-orientable ribbon graph is interpolating. In this paper, we first give some counterexamples to the conjecture. Then motivated by these counterexamples, we further find two infinite classes of counterexamples.
Gross, Mansour and Tucker introduced the partial-dual orientable genus polynomial and the partial-dual Euler genus polynomial. They computed these two partial-dual genus polynomials of four families of ribbon graphs, posed some research problems and made some conjectures. In this paper, we introduce the notion of signed sequences of bouquets and obtain the partial-dual Euler genus polynomials for all ribbon graphs with the number of edges less than 4 and the partial-dual orientable genus polynomials for all orientable ribbon graphs with the number of edges less than 5 in terms of signed sequen…
Gay and Kirby recently introduced the concept of a trisection for arbitrary smooth, oriented closed 4-manifolds, and with it a new topological invariant, called the trisection genus. This paper improves and implements an algorithm due to Bell, Hass, Rubinstein and Tillmann to compute trisections using triangulations, and extends it to non-orientable 4-manifolds. Lower bounds on trisection genus are given in terms of Betti numbers and used to determine the trisection genus of all standard simply connected PL 4-manifolds. In addition, we construct trisections of small genus directly from the sim…
The power graph $Γ_G$ of a finite group $G$ is the graph whose vertex set is the group, two distinct elements being adjacent if one is a power of the other. In this paper, we classify the finite groups whose power graphs have (non)orientable genus two.
We examine connections between the gonality, treewidth, and orientable genus of a graph. Especially, we find that hyperelliptic graphs in the sense of Baker and Norine are planar. We give a notion of a bielliptic graph and show that each of these must embed into a closed orientable surface of genus one. We also find, for all $g\ge 0$, trigonal graphs of treewidth 3 and orientable genus $g$, and give analogues for graphs of higher gonality.
We present a fast enumeration algorithm for combinatorial 2- and 3-manifolds. In particular, we enumerate all triangulated surfaces with 11 and 12 vertices and all triangulated 3-manifolds with 11 vertices. We further determine all equivelar polyhedral maps on the non-orientable surface of genus 4 as well as all equivelar triangulations of the orientable surface of genus 3 and the non-orientable surfaces of genus 5 and 6.
It is well known that any triangulation of a marked surface produces a quiver. In this paper we will provide a triangulation for orientable surfaces of genus $n$ with an arbitrary number interior marked points (called punctures) whose corresponding quiver has a maximal green sequence.
Recently, Gross, Mansour and Tucker introduced the partial-dual genus polynomial of a ribbon graph as a generating function that enumerates the partial duals of the ribbon graph by genus. It is analogous to the extensively-studied polynomial in topological graph theory that enumerates by genus all embeddings of a given graph. To investigate the partial-dual genus polynomial one only needs to focus on bouquets, i.e. ribbon graphs with only one vertex. In this paper, we shall further show that the partial-dual genus polynomial of a bouquet essentially depends on the signed intersection graph of …
Topological triangulations of orientable and non-orientable surfaces with arbitrary genus have important applications in quantum geometry, graph theory and statistical physics. However, until now only the asymptotics for 2-spheres are known analytically, and exact counts of triangulations are only available for both small genus and small triangulations. We apply the Wang-Landau algorithm to calculate the number $N(m,h)$ of triangulations for several order of magnitudes in system size $m$ and genus $h$. We verify that the limit of the entropy density of triangulations is independent of genus an…
We perform the asymptotic enumeration of two classes of rooted maps on orientable surfaces of genus g: m-hypermaps and m-constellations. For m=2, they correspond respectively to maps with even face degrees and bipartite maps. We obtain explicit asymptotic formulas for the number of such maps with any finite set of allowed face degrees. Our proofs rely on the generalisation to orientable surfaces of the Bouttier-Di Francesco-Guitter bijection, and on generating series methods. We show that each of the 2g fondamental cycles of the surface contributes a factor m between the numbers of m-hypermaps…
Let $\mathbb{S}_g$ be the orientable surface of genus $g$. We show that the number of vertex-labelled cubic multigraphs embeddable on $\mathbb{S}_g$ with $2n$ vertices is asymptotically $c_g n^{5(g-1)/2-1}γ^{2n}(2n)!$, where $γ$ is an algebraic constant and $c_g$ is a constant depending only on the genus $g$. We also derive an analogous result for simple cubic graphs and weighted cubic multigraphs. Additionally we prove that a typical cubic multigraph embeddable on $\mathbb{S}_g$, $g\ge 1$, has exactly one non-planar component.
The enumeration of maps and the study of uniform random maps have been classical topics of combinatorics and statistical physics ever since the seminal work of Tutte in the sixties. Following the bijective approach initiated by Cori and Vauquelin in the eighties, we describe a bijection between rooted maps, or rooted bipartite quadrangulations, on a surface of genus g and some simpler objects that generalize plane trees. Thanks to a rerooting argument, our bijection allows to compute the generating series of rooted maps on a surface of genus g with respect to the number of edges, and to recove…
We present a family of index 1 abelian current graphs whose derived embeddings can be modified into triangulations of $K_{12s}$ for $s \geq 4$. Our construction is significantly simpler than previous methods for finding genus embeddings of $K_{12s}$, which utilized either large index or nonabelian groups.
The complete sets of irreducible triangulations are known for the orientable surfaces with genus of 0, 1, or 2 and for the nonorientable surfaces with genus of 1, 2, 3, or 4. By examining these sets we determine some of the properties of these irreducible triangulations.
We study edge-maximal, non-complete graphs on surfaces that do not triangulate the surface. We prove that there is no such graph on the projective plane $\mathbb{N}_1$, $K_7-e$ is the unique such graph on the Klein bottle $\mathbb{N}_2$ and $K_8-E(C_5)$ is the unique such graph on the torus $\mathbb{S}_1$. In contrast to this for each $g\ge 2$ we construct an infinite family of such graphs on the orientable surface $\mathbb{S}_g$ of genus $g$, that are $\lfloor \frac{g}{2} \rfloor$ edges short of a triangulation.
In 1968, Ringel and Youngs confirmed the last open case of the Heawood Conjecture by determining the genus of every complete graph $K_n$. In this paper, we investigate the minimum genus embeddings of the complete $3$-uniform hypergraphs $K_n^3$. Embeddings of a hypergraph $H$ are defined as the embeddings of its associated Levi graph $L_H$ with vertex set $V(H)\sqcup E(H)$, in which $v\in V(H)$ and $e\in E(H)$ are adjacent if and only if $v$ and $e$ are incident in $H$. We determine both the orientable and the non-orientable genus of $K_n^3$ when $n$ is even. Moreover, it is shown that the num…
It is shown that the number of labelled graphs with n vertices that can be embedded in the orientable surface S_g of genus g grows asymptotically like $c^{(g)}n^{5(g-1)/2-1}γ^n n!$ where $c^{(g)}>0$, and $γ\approx 27.23$ is the exponential growth rate of planar graphs. This generalizes the result for the planar case g=0, obtained by Gimenez and Noy. An analogous result for non-orientable surfaces is obtained. In addition, it is proved that several parameters of interest behave asymptotically as in the planar case. It follows, in particular, that a random graph embeddable in S_g has a unique 2-…
The total embedding distributions of a graph is consisted of the orientable embeddings and non- orientable embeddings and have been know for few classes of graphs. The genus distribution of Ringel ladders is determined in [Discrete Mathematics 216 (2000) 235-252] by E.H. Tesar. In this paper, the explicit formula for non-orientable embeddings of Ringel ladders is obtained.
We find a graph of genus $5$ and its drawing on the orientable surface of genus $4$ with every pair of independent edges crossing an even number of times. This shows that the strong Hanani-Tutte theorem cannot be extended to the orientable surface of genus $4$. As a base step in the construction we use a counterexample to an extension of the unified Hanani-Tutte theorem on the torus.
In this paper, the quadrangular genus (4-genus) of the complete graph $K_p$ is shown to be $γ_4 (K_p) = \lceil {p(p-5)}/{8} \rceil +1$ for orientable surfaces. This means that $K_p$ is minimally embeddable in the closed orientable surface of genus $γ_4 (K_p)$ under the constraint that each face has length at least 4. In the most general setting, the genus of the complete graph was established by Ringel and Youngs and was mainly concerned with triangulations of surfaces. Nonetheless, since then a great deal of interest has also been generated in quadrangulations of surfaces. Hartsfield and Ring…
Huggett and Moffatt characterized all bipartite partial duals of a plane graph in terms of all-crossing directions of its medial graph. Then Metsidik and Jin characterized all Eulerian partial duals of a plane graph in terms of semi-crossing directions of its medial graph. Plane graphs are ribbon graphs with genus 0. In this paper, we shall first extend Huggett and Moffatt's result to any orientable ribbon graph and provide an example to show that it is not true for non-orientable ribbon graphs. Then we characterize all Eulerian partial duals of any ribbon graph in terms of crossing-total dire…
We establish a simple recurrence formula for the number $Q_g^n$ of rooted orientable maps counted by edges and genus. We also give a weighted variant for the generating polynomial $Q_g^n(x)$ where $x$ is a parameter taking the number of faces of the map into account, or equivalently a simple recurrence formula for the refined numbers $M_g^{i,j}$ that count maps by genus, vertices, and faces. These formulas give by far the fastest known way of computing these numbers, or the fixed-genus generating functions, especially for large $g$. In the very particular case of one-face maps, we recover the …
We show that for loopless $6$-regular triangulations on the torus the gap between the choice number and chromatic number is at most $2$. We also show that the largest gap for graphs embeddable in an orientable surface of genus $g$ is of the order $Θ(\sqrt{g})$, and moreover for graphs with chromatic number of the order $o(\sqrt{g}/\log_{2}(g))$ the largest gap is of the order $o(\sqrt{g})$.
We consider the thickness $θ(G))$ and outerthickness $θ_o(G)$ of a graph G in terms of its orientable and nonorientable genus. Dean and Hutchinson provided upper bounds for thickness of graphs in terms of their orientable genus. More recently, Concalves proved that the outerthickness of any planar graph is at most 2. In this paper, we apply the method of deleting spanning disks of embeddings to approximate the thickness and outerthickness of graphs. We first obtain better upper bounds for thickness. We then use a similar approach to provide upper bounds for outerthickness of graphs in terms of…
The n-th crossing number of a graph G, denoted cr_n(G), is the minimum number of crossings in a drawing of G on an orientable surface of genus n. We prove that for every a>b>0, there exists a graph G for which cr_0(G) = a, cr_1(G) = b, and cr_2(G) = 0. This provides support for a conjecture of Archdeacon et al. and resolves a problem of Salazar.
In this article, we investigate short topological decompositions of non-orientable surfaces and provide algorithms to compute them. Our main result is a polynomial-time algorithm that for any graph embedded in a non-orientable surface computes a canonical non-orientable system of loops so that any loop from the canonical system intersects any edge of the graph in at most 30 points. The existence of such short canonical systems of loops was well known in the orientable case and an open problem in the non-orientable case. Our proof techniques combine recent work of Schaefer-Štefankovič with idea…
A drawing of a graph on a surface is independently even if every pair of nonadjacent edges in the drawing crosses an even number of times. The $\mathbb{Z}_2$-genus of a graph $G$ is the minimum $g$ such that $G$ has an independently even drawing on the orientable surface of genus $g$. An unpublished result by Robertson and Seymour implies that for every $t$, every graph of sufficiently large genus contains as a minor a projective $t\times t$ grid or one of the following so-called $t$-Kuratowski graphs: $K_{3,t}$, or $t$ copies of $K_5$ or $K_{3,3}$ sharing at most two common vertices. We show …
Given a surface with boundary and some points on its boundary, a polygon diagram is a way to connect those points as vertices of non-overlapping polygons on the surface. Such polygon diagrams represent non-crossing permutations on a surface with any genus and number of boundary components. If only bigons are allowed, then it becomes an arc diagram. The count of arc diagrams is known to have a rich structure. We show that the count of polygon diagrams exhibits the same interesting behaviours, in particular it is almost polynomial in the number of points on the boundary components, and the leadi…
Higher chromatic numbers $χ_s$ of simplicial complexes naturally generalize the chromatic number $χ_1$ of a graph. In any fixed dimension $d$, the $s$-chromatic number $χ_s$ of $d$-complexes can become arbitrarily large for $s\leq\lceil d/2\rceil$ [6,18]. In contrast, $χ_{d+1}=1$, and only little is known on $χ_s$ for $\lceil d/2\rceil<s\leq d$. A particular class of $d$-complexes are triangulations of $d$-manifolds. As a consequence of the Map Color Theorem for surfaces [29], the 2-chromatic number of any fixed surface is finite. However, by combining results from the literature, we will see …
Consider the family of graphs without $ k $ node-disjoint odd cycles, where $ k $ is a constant. Determining the complexity of the stable set problem for such graphs $ G $ is a long-standing problem. We give a polynomial-time algorithm for the case that $ G $ can be further embedded in a (possibly non-orientable) surface of bounded genus. Moreover, we obtain polynomial-size extended formulations for the respective stable set polytopes. To this end, we show that $2$-sided odd cycles satisfy the Erdős-Pósa property in graphs embedded in a fixed surface. This extends the fact that odd cycles sati…
