The 3d spin-3 gravity theory is holographically dual to a 2d ${\cal W}_3$-extended CFT. In a large-c limit the symmetry algebra of the CFT reduces to $SU(1,2) \times SU(1,2)$. On the ground of symmetry the dual bulk space-time will be given by an 8d group manifold $SU(1,2)$. Hence we need to introduce five extra coordinates in addition to three ordinary ones. The 3d space-time is a 3d hyper-surface $Σ$ embedded at constant values of the extra variables. Operators in the CFT at the boundary of $Σ$ are expressed in terms of ${\cal W}$ descendants of the operators at the boundary of $Σ_0$, where the extra variables vanish. In this paper it is shown that AdS/CFT correspondence for a scalar field coupled to 3d spin-3 gravity is realized in this auxiliary 8d space. A bulk-to-boundary propagator of a scalar field is found and a generating functional of boundary two-point functions of scalar ${\cal W}$-descendant operators is obtained by using the classical action for the scalar field. Classically, the scalar field must satisfy both Klein-Gordon equation and a third-order differential equation, which are related to the quadratic and cubic Casimir operators of $su(1,2)$. It is found that the coefficient function of the derivatives of the scalar field in the latter equation is the spin-3 gauge field, when restricted to the hypersurface. An action integral in the 8d auxiliary space for the 3d spin-3 gravity coupled to a scalar field is presented. An 8d local frame is introduced and the equations of motion for the 8d connections $A_μ$, $\overline{A}_μ$ are solved. By restricting those solutions onto $Σ$, flat connections in 3d $SL(3,\mathbb{R}) \times SL(3,\mathbb{R})$ Chern-Simons theory are obtained and new 3d black hole solutions with and without spin-3 charge are found by this method.
In this paper we propose a space-time random tensor network approach for understanding holographic duality. Using tensor networks with random link projections, we define boundary theories with interesting holographic properties, such as the Renyi entropies satisfying the covariant Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi formula, and operator correspondence with local reconstruction properties. We also investigate the unitarity of boundary theory in spacetime geometries with Lorenzian signature. Compared with the spatial random tensor networks, the space-time generalization does not require a particular ti…
We consider the generalization of the S-duality transformation previously investigated in the context of the FQHE and s-wave superconductivity to p-wave superconductivity in 2+1 dimensions in the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The vector Cooper condensate transforms under the S-duality action to the pseudovector condensate at the dual side. The 3+1-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills theory, the holographic dual to p-wave superconductivity, is used to investigate the S-duality action via the AdS/CFT correspondence. It is shown that in order to implement the duality transformation, chemic…
We introduce the gauge/gravity, or AdS/CFT, correspondence with an eye towards its application to strongly coupled systems. We provide an overview of the duality, including the AdS/CFT dictionary and holographic renormalization. We then discuss simple correlation functions in the context of renormalization group flow geometries, holographic thermodynamics and an application to the phase diagram of QCD, real-time correlators and the shear viscosity of strongly coupled field theories, holographic superconductors, and the application of holographic fermionic response to strange metals. These lect…
We show that the quantum entanglement can be transmuted to a force using the holographic duality. First, we prove that there is an open string in the spectrum of the holographic fermion coupled with scalar. The string ends at two fermions and its tension vanishes in the limit of zero scalar condensation. We associate such string with a dimer and identify the scalar condensation as the degree of the dimerization. Together with divergently large entanglement entropy, the model is expected to describe the Spin Liquid. As a consistency check, we show that there is a Mott transition as the dimeriza…
We study minimal co-dimension-2 surfaces in the asymptotically flat background of extremal 3-brane solutions in ten-dimensional type IIB supergravity. A conjectured open-closed string duality combined with the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription implies that the area of the surfaces we consider could be interpreted as the entanglement entropy of a dual (3+1)-dimensional large-N, strongly-coupled open string field theory on D3-branes. As the size of the surface is varied we observe a transition from a volume law to an area law in agreement with expectations from non-locality in an open string field the…
In this thesis we review some results on the generalization of the gauge/gravity duality to new cases by using T-duality and by including fundamental matter, finding applications to condensed matter physics. First, we construct new supersymmetric solutions of type IIA/B and eleven-dimensional supergravity by using non-abelian T-duality. Second, we construct a type IIA supergravity solution with D6-brane sources, dual to an unquenched massive flavored version of the ABJM theory. Third, we study a probe D6-brane with worldvolume gauge fields in the ABJM background, obtaining the dual description…
The unusual magnetic materials are significant in both science and technology. However, because of the strongly correlated effects, it is difficult to understand their novel properties from theoretical aspects. Holographic duality offers a new approach to understanding such systems from gravity side. This paper will give a brief review of our recent works on the applications of holographic duality in understanding unusual magnetic materials. Some quantitative compare between holographic results and experimental data will be shown and some predictions from holographic duality models will be dis…
We study the holographic duality between boundary OPE blocks and geodesic integrated bulk fields in quotients of AdS$_3$ dual to excited CFT states. The quotient geometries exhibit non-minimal geodesics between pairs of spacelike separated boundary points which modify the OPE block duality. We decompose OPE blocks into quotient invariant operators and propose a duality with bulk fields integrated over individual geodesics, minimal or non-minimal. We provide evidence for this relationship by studying the monodromy of asymptotic maps that implement the quotients.
These are notes from my lectures at TASI 2015. The goal is to provide context for the study of strongly-correlated quantum many-body systems using quantum field theory, and possibly string theory.
We study the torus partition functions of free bosonic CFTs in two dimensions. Integrating over Narain moduli defines an ensemble-averaged free CFT. We calculate the averaged partition function and show that it can be reinterpreted as a sum over topologies in three dimensions. This result leads us to conjecture that an averaged free CFT in two dimensions is holographically dual to an exotic theory of three-dimensional gravity with $U(1)^c \times U(1)^c$ symmetry and a composite boundary graviton. Additionally, for small central charge $c$, we obtain general constraints on the spectral gap of f…
Holographic Duality for three-dimensional Super-conformal Field Theories
We give a pedagogical review of how concepts from quantum information theory build up the gravitational side of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The review is self-contained in that it only presupposes knowledge of quantum mechanics and general relativity; other tools--including holographic duality itself--are introduced in the text. We have aimed to give researchers interested in entering this field a working knowledge sufficient for initiating original projects. The review begins with the laws of black hole thermodynamics, which form the basis of this subject, then introduces the Ryu-Takayanagi p…
In this paper, we obtain a holographic model of dark energy using the fluid/gravity duality. This model will be dual to a higher dimensional Schwarzschild black hole, and we would use fluid/gravity duality to relate to the parameters of this black hole to such a cosmological model. We will also analyze the thermodynamics of such a solution, and discuss the stability model. Finally, we use cosmological data to constraint the parametric space of this dark energy model. Thus, we will use observational data to perform cosmography for this holographic model based on fluid/gravity duality.
Topological phases of matter are often described using auxiliary systems in one extra dimension. I review the one-dimensional cluster state--the simplest quantum state with Symmetry-Protected Topological (SPT) order--as a toy model of holographic duality, and inspect it for clues about defining holographic complexity. Group cohomology, which classifies SPT orders, is a viable candidate for a robust definition of complexity in gauge/gravity duality.
We study the holographic dual to $c$-extremization for 2d $(0,2)$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) that have an AdS$_3$ dual realized in Type IIB with varying axio-dilaton, i.e. F-theory. M/F-duality implies that such AdS$_3$ solutions can be mapped to AdS$_2$ solutions in M-theory, which are holographically dual to superconformal quantum mechanics (SCQM), obtained by dimensional reduction of the 2d SCFTs. We analyze the corresponding map between holographic $c$-extremization in F-theory and $\mathcal{I}$-extremization in M-theory, where in general the latter receives corrections relative…
We review warped compactifications of superstring theory with some attention to the limit in which these resemble "bottom-up" phenomenological models. In addition to some discussion of the original Klebanov-Witten and Klebanov-Strassler set-ups, we also touch on various generalizations of the geometry that have been considered. Various other systems with a holographic duality are also briefly reviewed. The point of this latter exploration is to illustrate how far beyond the standard AdS(5) x S(5) set-up things have moved over the years.
We look into the $AdS$ black holes from two-dimensional gravity perspective. In this work, we extend the previous results of holographic renormalization group flows to dimensions two. By introducing a superpotential, we derive the flow equations in two-dimensional dilaton gravity. We find a quantity which monotonically decreases along flows and give some comments on holographic $c$-theorem. As examples, we show that recently studied supersymmetric $AdS$ black hole solutions generically dimensionally reduce to two-dimensional dilaton gravity, and obtain the flow equations for black hole solutio…
We study the holographic phase transition of superconductor dual to a Lifshitz black brane probed by an anisotropic scalar field in the probe limit in Hourava-Lifshitz gravity. With the use of numerical and analytical method, we investigate how the critical temperature of the condensation is affected by the Lifshitz exponent $z$, $α-$correction term in the action as well as the dimensions of the gravity. We also numerically explore the condensation of the dual operator and optical conductivity of the holographic system. Various interesting properties of the holographic condensation affected by…
We consider type-A higher-spin gravity in AdS_4, holographically dual to a free U(N) vector model on the boundary. We study the linearized version of the Didenko-Vasiliev "BPS black hole", which we view as this theory's equivalent of the fundamental string. The Didenko-Vasiliev solution consists of gauge fields of all spins generated by a particle-like source along a bulk geodesic, and is holographically dual to a bilocal boundary operator at the geodesic's endpoints. Our first main result is a new gauge for this solution, which makes manifest its behavior under the boundary field equation. It…
In this work, a clear connection is made between E. Verlinde's recent theory of emergent gravity in de Sitter space and the earlier work that described emergent gravity using holographic screens. A modified (non)holographic screen scenario is presented, wherein the screen fails to encode an emergent mass in the bulk "unemerged" part of space for sufficiently large length-scales, where the volume-law of the non-holographic bulk degrees of freedom overtakes the area-law scaling of the entropy of the screen. Within this framework, we can describe both an emergent dark gravitational force, which s…
The AdS/CFT correspondence realises the holographic principle where information in the bulk of a space is encoded at its border. We are yet a long way from a full mathematical construction of AdS/CFT, but toy models in the form of holographic quantum error correcting codes (HQECC) have replicated some interesting features of the correspondence. In this work we construct new HQECCs built from random stabilizer tensors that describe a duality between models encompassing local Hamiltonians whilst exactly obeying the Ryu-Takayanagi entropy formula for all boundary regions. We also obtain complemen…
We investigate the duality conjecture "Complexity=Action" (CA) for Born-Infeld (BI) gravity model and derive the growth rate of its action within the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) patch, which is believed to be dual to the growth rate of quantum complexity of holographic boundary state. In order to find the correct on-shell action, we use direct variational procedure to find proper boundary and corner terms. We find out that the late-time behavior of holographic complexity is the well-known two times of energy, as expected.
We revisit the late-time growth rate of various holographic complexity conjectures for neutral and charged AdS black holes with single or multiple horizons in two dimensional (2D) gravity like Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity and JT-like gravity. For complexity-action conjecture, we propose an alternative resolution to the vanishing growth rate at late-time for 2D neutral black hole with multiple horizons as found in the previous studies for JT gravity. For complexity-volume conjectures, we obtain the generic forms of late-time growth rates in the context of extremal volume and Wheeler-DeWitt vo…
We investigate a holographic realization in Type-IIB string theory of pure Chern-Simons theories, and focus on the level/rank dualities that they enjoy. The level/rank duality is established between the boundary theory, engineered utilizing D3-branes compactified on a $S^1$, and the theory on probe D7-branes located at a specific bulk location. Paying attention to the boundary conditions imposed on the Ramond-Ramond (RR) two- and six-forms, we show that holography precisely reproduces several different level/rank dual pairs. The $SL(2,\mathbf{Z})$ action relating all these theories is realized…
