We study the geometry and holonomy of semi-Riemannian, time-like metric cones that are indecomposable, i.e., which do not admit a local decomposition into a semi-Riemannian product. This includes irreducible cones, for which the holonomy can be classified, as well as non irreducible cones. The latter admit a parallel distribution of null $k$-planes, and we study the cases $k=1$ and $k=2$ in detail. In these cases, i.e., when the cone admits a distribution of parallel null tangent lines or planes, we give structure theorems about the base manifold. Moreover, in the case $k=1$ and when the base manifold is Lorentzian, we derive a description of the cone holonomy. This result is obtained by a computation of certain cocycles of indecomposable subalgebras in $\mathfrak{so}(1,n-1)$.
We consider a class of $S^{1}$-bundles whose total space admits a nowhere vanishing recurrent lightlike vector field with respect to a Lorentzian metric. This metric can be modified such that its restricted holonomy group is indecomposable and reducible. We apply Hodge theory to construct examples with Hermitian screen holonomy. Finally, we construct complete pp-waves.
We classify the holonomy algebras of manifolds admitting an indecomposable torsion free $G_2^*$-structure, i.e. for which the holonomy representation does not leave invariant any proper non-degenerate subspace. We realize some of these Lie algebras as holonomy algebras of left-invariant metrics on Lie groups.
By a classical theorem of Gallot (1979), a Riemannian cone over a complete Riemannian manifold is either flat or has irreducible holonomy. We consider metric cones with reducible holonomy over pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. First we describe the local structure of the base of the cone when the holonomy of the cone is decomposable. For instance, we find that the holonomy algebra of the base is always the full pseudo-orthogonal Lie algebra. One of the global results is that a cone over a compact and complete pseudo-Riemannian manifold is either flat or has indecomposable holonomy. Then we analyse …
We investigate geometric properties of indecomposable but non-irreducible Lorentzian manifolds, which are total spaces of circle bundles. We investigate under which conditions these manifolds are complete and give examples which fulfill the obtained conditions. In particular we investigate the Einstein equation for these spaces yielding examples for complete compact Ricci flat Lorentzian manifolds and manifolds with timelike Killing vector fields. Finally we study their holonomy and obtain in particular complete examples for Lorentzian manifolds with holonomy of so called type 4.
The aim of this paper and its prequel is to introduce and classify the irreducible holonomy algebras of the projective Tractor connection. This is achieved through the construction of a `projective cone', a Ricci-flat manifold one dimension higher whose affine holonomy is equal to the Tractor holonomy of the underlying manifold. This paper uses the result to enable the construction of manifolds with each possible holonomy algebra.
Manifolds with exceptional holonomy play an important role in string theory, supergravity and M-theory. It is explained how one can find the holonomy algebra of an arbitrary Riemannian or Lorentzian manifold. Using the de~Rham and Wu decompositions, this problem is reduced to the case of locally indecomposable manifolds. In the case of locally indecomposable Riemannian manifolds, it is known that the holonomy algebra can be found from the analysis of special geometric structures on the manifold. If the holonomy algebra $\mathfrak{g}\subset\mathfrak{so}(1,n-1)$ of a locally indecomposable Loren…
Due to a result by Gallot a Riemannian cone over a complete Riemannian manifold is either flat or has an irreducible holonomy representation. This is false in general for indefinite cones but the structures induced on the cone by holonomy invariant subspaces can be used to study the geometry on the base of the cone. The purpose of this paper is twofold: first we will give a survey of general results about semi-Riemannian cones with non irreducible holonomy representation and then, as the main result, we will derive improved versions of these general statements in the case when the cone admits …
We show that the extended principal bundle of a Cartan geometry of type $(A(m,\mathbb{R}),GL(m,\mathbb{R}))$, endowed with its extended connection $\hatω$, is isomorphic to the principal $A(m,\mathbb{R})$-bundle of affine frames endowed with the affine connection as defined in classical Kobayashi-Nomizu volume I. Then we classify the local holonomy groups of the Cartan geometry canonically associated to a Riemannian manifold. It follows that if the holonomy group of the Cartan geometry canonically associated to a Riemannian manifold is compact then the Riemannian manifold is locally a product …
We completely explore the system of ODE's which is equivalent to the existence of a parallel $Spin(7)$-structure on the cone over a 7-dimensional 3-Sasakian manifold. The one-dimensional family of solutions of this system is constructed. The solutions of this family correspond to metrics with holonomy SU(4) which generalize the Calabi metrics.
We construct propose an anzatz for Spin(7) metrics as an R-bundle over closed G2 structures. These G2 structures are R3 bundles over 4-dimensional compact quaternion Kahler spaces. The inspiration for the anzatz metric comes from the Bryant-Salamon construction of G2 holonomy metrics and from the fact that the twistor space of any compact quaternion Kahler space is Kahler-Einstein. The reduction of the holonomy to a subgroup of Spin(7) gives non linear system relating three unknown functions of one variable. We obtain a particular solution and we find that the resulting metric is a Calabi-Yau …
There is a rich theory of so-called (strict) nearly Kaehler manifolds, almost-Hermitian manifolds generalising the famous almost complex structure on the 6-sphere induced by octonionic multiplication. Nearly Kaehler 6-manifolds play a distinguished role both in the general structure theory and also because of their connection with singular spaces with holonomy group the compact exceptional Lie group G2: the metric cone over a Riemannian 6-manifold M has holonomy contained in G2 if and only if M is a nearly Kaehler 6-manifold. A central problem in the field has been the absence of any complete …
We consider cones over manifolds admitting real Killing spinors and instanton equations on connections on vector bundles over these manifolds. Such cones are manifolds with special (reduced) holonomy. We generalize the scalar ansatz for a connection proposed by Harland and Nolle in such a way that instantons are parameterized by constrained matrix-valued functions. Our ansatz reduces instanton equations to a matrix model equations which can be further reduced to Newtonian mechanics with particle trajectories obeying first-order gradient flow equations. Generalizations to Kaehler-Einstein manif…
We develop methods to study the singularities of certain $G_2$ cones related to toric hyperkahler spaces and Einstein selfdual orbifolds. This allows us to determine the low energy gauge groups of chiral N=1 compactifications of M-theory on a large family of such backgrounds, which includes the models recently studied by Acharya and Witten. All M-theory compactifications belonging to our family admit a $T^2$ of isometries, and therefore T-dual IIA and IIB descriptions. We argue that reduction through such an isometry leads generically to systems of weakly and strongly coupled IIA 6-branes, T-d…
In this paper, a metric with G$_2$ holonomy and slow rate of convergence to the cone metric is constructed on a ball inside the cone over the flag manifold.
This paper aims to classify the holonomy of the conformal Tractor connection, and relate these holonomies to the geometry of the underlying manifold. The conformally Einstein case is dealt with through the construction of metric cones, whose Riemmanian holonomy is the same as the Tractor holonomy of the underlying manifold. Direct calculations in the Ricci-flat case and an important decomposition theorem complete the classification for definitive signature.
We study the geometric structure of Lorentzian spin manifolds, which admit imaginary Killing spinors. The discussion is based on the cone construction and a normal form classification of skew-adjoint operators in signature $(2,n-2)$. Derived geometries include Brinkmann spaces, Lorentzian Einstein-Sasaki spaces and certain warped product structures. Exceptional cases with decomposable holonomy of the cone are possible.
A study is made of $R^6$ as a singular quotient of the conical space $R^+\times CP^3$ with holonomy $G_2$ with respect to an obvious action by $U(1)$ on $CP^3$ with fixed points. Closed expressions are found for the induced metric, and for both the curvature and symplectic 2-forms characterizing the reduction. All these tensors are invariant by a diagonal action of $SO(3)$ on $R^6$, which can be used effectively to describe the resulting geometrical features.
In this paper, we investigate the geometry of asymptotically flat manifolds with controlled holonomy. We show that any end of such manifold admits a torus fibration over an ALE end. In addition, we prove a Hitchin-Thorpe inequality for oriented Ricci-flat $4$-manifolds with curvature decay and controlled holonomy. As an application, we show that any complete asymptotically flat Ricci-flat metric on a $4$-manifold which is homeomorphic to $\mathbb R^4$ must be isometric to the Euclidean or the Taub-NUT metric, provided that the tangent cone at infinity is not $\mathbb R \times \mathbb R_+$.
We study the control system of a Riemannian manifold $M$ of dimension $n$ rolling on the sphere $S^n$. The controllability of this system is described in terms of the holonomy of a vector bundle connection which, we prove, is isomorphic to the Riemannian holonomy group of the cone $C(M)$ of $M$. Using Berger's list, we reduce the possible holonomies to a few families. In particular, we focus on the cases where the holonomy is the unitary and the symplectic group. In the first case, using the rolling formalism, we construct explicitly a Sasakian structure on $M$; and in the second case, we cons…
A recent theorem of Foscolo-Haskins-Nordström which constructs complete $G_2$-holonomy orbifolds from circle bundles over Calabi-Yau cones can be utilised to construct and investigate a large class of generalisations of the $M$-theory flop transition. We see that in many cases a UV perturbative gauge theory appears to have an infrared dual described by a smooth $G_2$-holonomy background in $M$-theory. Various physical checks of this proposal are carried out affirmatively.
Associative submanifolds $A$ in nearly parallel $G_2$-manifolds $Y$ are minimal 3-submanifolds in spin 7-manifolds with a real Killing spinor. The Riemannian cone over $Y$ has the holonomy group contained in ${\rm Spin(7)}$ and the Riemannian cone over $A$ is a Cayley submanifold. Infinitesimal deformations of associative submanifolds were considered by the author. This paper is a continuation of the work. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for an infinitesimal associative deformation to be integrable (unobstructed) to second order explicitly. As an application, we show that the infi…
We use twistor methods to promote Namikawa's universal Poisson deformations of conic affine symplectic singularities to families of hyperkähler structures deforming hyperkähler cone metrics. The metrics we produce are generally incomplete, but for specific classes of hyperkähler cones, even these incomplete metrics have some interest and applications: we study in detail the case of the nilpotent cone of a simple complex Lie algebra, with applications to hyperkähler metrics with symmetries and hyperkähler quotients, and the case of Kleinian singularities, with applications to codimension-4 sing…
Bryant-Salamon constructed three 1-parameter families of complete manifolds with holonomy $\mathrm{G}_2$ which are asymptotically conical to a holonomy $\mathrm{G}_2$ cone. For each of these families, including their asymptotic cone, we construct a fibration by asymptotically conical and conically singular coassociative 4-folds. We show that these fibrations are natural generalizations of the following three well-known coassociative fibrations on $\mathbb R^7$: the trivial fibration by 4-planes, the product of the standard Lefschetz fibration of $\mathbb C^3$ with a line, and the Harvey-Lawson…
We consider sub-Riemannian spaces admitting an isometry group that is maximal in the sense that any linear isometry between the horizontal tangent spaces is realized by a global isometry. We will show that these spaces have a canonical choice of partial connection on their horizontal bundle, which is determined by isometries and generalizes the Levi-Civita connection for the special case of Riemannian model spaces. The number of invariants needed to describe model spaces with the same tangent cone is in general greater than one, and these invariants are not necessarily related to the holonomy …
Let $M$ be a compact hyperkahler manifold with maximal holonomy (IHS). The group $H^2(M, R)$ is equipped with a quadratic form of signature $(3, b_2-3)$, called Bogomolov-Beauville-Fujiki (BBF) form. This form restricted to the rational Hodge lattice $H^{1,1}(M,Q)$, has signature $(1,k)$. This gives a hyperbolic Riemannian metric on the projectivisation of the positive cone in $H^{1,1}(M,Q)$, denoted by $H$. Torelli theorem implies that the Hodge monodromy group $Γ$ acts on $H$ with finite covolume, giving a hyperbolic orbifold $X=H/Γ$. We show that there are finitely many geodesic hypersurfac…
The purpose of this paper is to study the Sasakian geometry on odd dimensional sphere bundles over a smooth projective algebraic variety $N$ with the ultimate, but probably unachievable goal of understanding the existence and non-existence of extremal and constant scalar curvature Sasaki metrics. We apply the fiber join construction of Yamazaki \cite{Yam99} for K-contact manifolds to the Sasaki case. This construction depends on the choice of $d+1$ integral Kähler classes $[ω_j]$ on $N$ that are not necessarily colinear in the Kähler cone. We show that the colinear case is equivalent to a subc…
