Using Arakelov geometry, we compute the partition function of the noncompact free boson at genus two. We begin by compiling a list of modular invariants which appear in the Arakelov theory of Riemann surfaces. Using these quantities, we express the genus two partition function as a product of modular forms, as in the well-known genus one case. We check that our result has the expected obstruction to holomorphic factorization and behavior under degeneration.
The concept and the construction of modular graph functions are generalized from genus-one to higher genus surfaces. The integrand of the four-graviton superstring amplitude at genus-two provides a generating function for a special class of such functions. A general method is developed for analyzing the behavior of modular graph functions under non-separating degenerations in terms of a natural real parameter $t$. For arbitrary genus, the Arakelov Green function and the Kawazumi-Zhang invariant degenerate to a Laurent polynomial in $t$ of degree $(1,1)$ in the limit $t\to\infty$. For genus two…
We study bosons interacting with an abelian Chern-Simons field on Riemann surfaces of genus $g>0$. It is shown that a singular gauge transformation brings the hamiltonian to free form. The transformed wave functions furnish a multi-component representation of the braid group studied by Imbo and March-Russell. The construction constitutes a proof of the equivalence of bosons coupled to a Chern-Simons field and anyons and generalizes the well known equivalence of the two pictures on the plane.
Symplectic modular invariance of the bosonic string partition function has been verified at genus 2 and 3 using the period matrix coordinatization of moduli space. A calculation of the transformation of the holomorphic part of the differential volume element shows that an extra phase arises together with the factor associated with a specific modular weight; the phase is cancelled in the transformation of the entire volume element including the complex conjugate. An argument is given for modular invariance of the reggeon measure at genus twelve.
We define the partition and $n$-point functions for a vertex operator algebra on a genus two Riemann surface formed by sewing two tori together. We obtain closed formulas for the genus two partition function for the Heisenberg free bosonic string and for any pair of simple Heisenberg modules. We prove that the partition function is holomorphic in the sewing parameters on a given suitable domain and describe its modular properties for the Heisenberg and lattice vertex operator algebras and a continuous orbifolding of the rank two fermion vertex operator super algebra. We compute the genus two H…
We define the $n$-point function for a vertex operator algebra on a genus two Riemann surface in two separate sewing schemes where either two tori are sewn together or a handle is sewn to one torus. We explicitly obtain closed formulas for the genus two partition function for the Heisenberg free bosonic string and lattice vertex operator algebras in both sewing schemes. We prove that the partition functions are holomorphic in the sewing parameters on given suitable domains and describe their modular properties. Finally, we show that the partition functions cannot be equal in the neighborhood o…
A main issue in superstring theory are the superstring measures. D'Hoker and Phong showed that for genus two these reduce to measures on the moduli space of curves which are determined by modular forms of weight eight and the bosonic measure. They also suggested a generalisation to higher genus. We showed that their approach works, with a minor modification, in genus three and we announced a positive result also in genus four. Here we give the modular form in genus four explicitly. Recently S. Grushevsky published this result as part of a more general approach.
The Mellin-Barnes representation for the free energy of the genus-$g$ string is constructed. It is shown that the interactions of the open bosonic string do not modify the critical (Hagedorn) temperature. However, for the sectors having a spinor structure, the critical temperature exists also for all $g$ and depends on the windings. The appearance of a periodic structure is briefly discussed.
We extend the modular orbits method of constructing a two-dimensional orbifold conformal field theory to higher genus Riemann surfaces. We find that partition functions on surfaces of arbitrary genus can be constructed by a straightforward generalization of the rules that one would apply to the torus. We demonstrate how one can use these higher genus objects to compute correlation functions and OPE coefficients in the underlying theory. In the case of orbifolds of free bosonic theories by subgroups of continuous symmetries, we can give the explicit results of our procedure for symmetric and as…
Higher genus partition functions of string world sheets with boundaries are relevant, e.g. for computation of quantum corrections to Wilson loop expectation values. As a preparation for a possible study of strings in curved space like AdS here we consider examples of genus one partition functions of string world-sheets ending on a circle in the bosonic string theory in flat space. We begin with the partition function for annular topology, writing it as an integral over the modulus of the annulus. In the process, we compute the determinant of the Laplacian on the annulus for Dirichlet-Dirichlet…
We give a detailed path integral derivation of the elliptic genus of a supersymmetric coset conformal field theory, further twisted by a global U(1) symmetry. It gives rise to a Jacobi form in three variables, which is the modular completion of a mock modular form. The derivation provides a physical interpretation to the non-holomorphic part as arising from a difference in spectral densities for the continuous part of the right-moving bosonic and fermionic spectrum. The spectral asymmetry can also be read off directly from the reflection amplitudes of the theory. By performing an orbifold, we …
The four-point function arising in the scattering of closed bosonic strings in their tachyonic ground state is evaluated on a surface of infinite genus. The amplitude has poles corresponding to physical intermediate states and divergences at the boundary of moduli space, but no new types of divergences result from the infinite number of handles. The implications for the universal moduli space approach are briefly discussed.
The symmetries associated with the closed bosonic string partition function are examined so that the integration region in Teichmuller space can be determined. The conditions on the period matrix defining the fundamental region can be translated to relations on the parameters of the uniformizing Schottky group. The growth of the lower bound for the regularized partition function is derived through integration over a subset of the fundamental region.
We consider the free field approach or bosonization technique for the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model with arbitrary Kac-Moody algebra on Riemann surface of genus zero. This subject was much studied previously, and the paper can be partially taken as a brief survey. The way to obtain well-known Schechtman-Varchenko solutions of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations as certain correlators in free chiral theory is revisited. This gives rise to simple description of space of the WZNW conformal blocks. The general $N$-point correlators of the model are constructed from the conformal blocks using n…
We construct the genus two (or two loop) partition function for meromorphic bosonic conformal field theories. We use a sewing procedure involving two genus one tori by exploiting an explicit relationship between the genus two period matrix and pinching modular parameters. We obtain expressions for the partition function for the chiral bosonic string, even rank lattice theories and self-dual meromorphic conformal field theories including the Moonshine Module. In particular, we find that for self-dual theories with central charge 24, the genus two partition function multiplied by a universal hol…
We obtain explicit expressions for all genus one chiral n-point functions for free bosonic and lattice vertex operator algebras. We also consider the elliptic properties of these functions.
We compute the $N=2$ Rényi entanglement entropy of two intervals at equal time in a circle, for the theory of a 2d compact complex free scalar at finite temperature. This is carried out by performing functional integral on a genus 3 ramified cover of the torus, wherein the quantum part of the integral is captured by the four point function of twist fields on the worldsheet torus, and the classical piece is given by summing over winding modes of the genus 3 surface onto the target space torus. The final result is given in terms of a product of theta function and certain multi-dimensional theta …
We develop a method for computing correlation functions of twist operators in the bosonic 2-d CFT arising from orbifolds M^N/S_N, where M is an arbitrary manifold. The path integral with twist operators is replaced by a path integral on a covering space with no operator insertions. Thus, even though the CFT is defined on the sphere, the correlators are expressed in terms of partition functions on Riemann surfaces with a finite range of genus g. For large N, this genus expansion coincides with a 1/N expansion. The contribution from the covering space of genus zero is `universal' in the sense th…
We consider a deformation of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions, which we call the C-deformation, where the gluino field satisfies a Clifford-like algebra dictated by a self-dual two-form, instead of the standard Grassmannian algebra. The superpotential of the deformed gauge theory is computed by the full partition function of an associated matrix model (or more generally a bosonic gauge theory), including non-planar diagrams. In this identification, the strength of the two-form controls the genus expansion of the matrix model partition function. For the case of pure N=1 Yang…
We obtain the topological expansion of the hermitian matrix model using its representation as a CFT on a hyperelliptic Riemann surface. To each branch point of the Riemann surface we associate an operator which represents a twist field dressed by the modes of the twisted boson. The partition function of the matrix model is computed as a correlation function of such dressed twist fields. The perturbative construction of the dressing operators yields a set of Feynman rules for evaluating the free energy and the loop observables at any genus.
We define the partition and $n$-point correlation functions for a vertex operator superalgebra on a genus two Riemann surface formed by sewing two tori together. For the free fermion vertex operator superalgebra we obtain a closed formula for the genus two continuous orbifold partition function in terms of an infinite dimensional determinant with entries arising from torus Szegö kernels. We prove that the partition function is holomorphic in the sewing parameters on a given suitable domain and describe its modular properties. Using the bosonized formalism, a new genus two Jacobi product identi…
The divergences that arise in the regularized partition function for closed bosonic string theory in flat space lead to three types of perturbation series expansions, distinguished by their genus dependence. This classification of infinities can be traced to geometrical characteristics of the string worldsheet. Some categories of divergences may be eliminated in string theories formulated on compact manifolds.
Structures of the disconnected part of higher genus superstring amplitudes restricted to the hyper elliptic cases are investigated in the NSR formalism, based on the DHoker Phong and recent results. A set of equations, which we can regard as a basic tool to sum over the spin structures of any of g loop, M point amplitudes systematically, is shown by using a classical result of Abelian functions. We discuss structures of g loop, M point massless external boson superstring amplitudes by assuming that the spin structure dependence of any of the disconnected amplitudes is only on one kind of const…
We present the multiloop partition function of open bosonic string theory in the presence of a constant gauge field strength, and discuss its low-energy limit. The result is written in terms of twisted determinants and differentials on higher-genus Riemann surfaces, for which we provide an explicit representation in the Schottky parametrization. In the field theory limit, we recover from the string formula the two-loop Euler-Heisenberg effective action for adjoint scalars minimally coupled to the background gauge field.
We study the discrete light-cone quantization (DLCQ) of closed strings in the background of Minkowski space-time and a constant Neveu-Schwarz $B$-field. For the Bosonic string, we identify the $B$-dependent part of the thermodynamic free energy to all orders in string perturbation theory. For every genus, $B$ appears in a constraint in the path integral which restricts the world-sheet geometries to those which are branched covers of a certain torus. This is the extension of a previous result where the $B$-field was absent \cite{Grignani:2000zm}. We then discuss the coupling of a $B$-field to t…
We calculate the generating functions of BPS indices using their modular properties in Type II and M-theory compactifications on compact genus one fibered CY 3-folds with singular fibers and additional rational sections or just $N$-sections, in order to study string dualities in four and five dimensions as well as rigid limits in which gravity decouples. The generating functions are Jacobi-forms of $Γ_1(N)$ with the complexified fiber volume as modular parameter. The string coupling $λ$, or the $ε_\pm$ parameters in the rigid limit, as well as the masses of charged hypermultiplets and non-Abel…
The relation between superholomorphicity and holomorphicity of chiral superstring N-point amplitudes for NS bosons on a genus 2 Riemann surface is shown to be encoded in a hybrid cohomology theory, incorporating elements of both de Rham and Dolbeault cohomologies. A constructive algorithm is provided which shows that, for arbitrary N and for each fixed even spin structure, the hybrid cohomology classes of the chiral amplitudes of the N-point function on a surface of genus 2 always admit a holomorphic representative. Three key ingredients in the derivation are a classification of all kinematic …
We revisit the proposal that the ensemble average over free boson CFTs in two dimensions - parameterized by Narain's moduli space - is dual to an exotic theory of gravity in three dimensions dubbed $U(1)$ gravity. We consider flavored partition functions, where the usual genus $g$ partition function is weighted by Wilson lines coupled to the conserved $U(1)$ currents of these theories. These flavored partition functions obey a heat equation which relates deformations of the Riemann surface moduli to those of the chemical potentials which measure these $U(1)$ charges. This allows us to derive a…
We introduce two-types of topologically twisted Chern-Simons-matter theories on the direct product of circle and genus-h Riemann surface (S^1 \times Σ_h). The partition functions of first model agrees with the partition functions of a generalizations of G/G gauged WZW model. We also find that correlation functions of Wilson loops in first type Chern-Simons-matter theory coincide with correlation functions of G elements in the generalization of G/G gauged WZW model. The partition function of this model also has nice interpretations as norms of eigen states of Hamiltonian in the quantum integrab…
We analytically evaluate the Renyi entropies for the two dimensional free boson CFT. The CFT is considered to be compactified on a circle and at finite temperature. The Renyi entropies S_n are evaluated for a single interval using the two point function of bosonic twist fields on a torus. For the case of the compact boson, the sum over the classical saddle points results in the Riemann-Siegel theta function associated with the A_{n-1} lattice. We then study the Renyi entropies in the decompactification regime. We show that in the limit when the size of the interval becomes the size of the spat…
We consider genus one n-point functions for a vertex operator superalgebra with a real grading. We compute all n-point functions for rank one and rank two fermion vertex operator superalgebras. In the rank two fermion case, we obtain all orbifold n-point functions for a twisted module associated with a continuous automorphism generated by a Heisenberg bosonic state. The modular properties of these orbifold n-point functions are given and we describe a generalization of Fay's trisecant identity for elliptic functions.
We investigate a deformed matrix model of type 0A theory related to supersymmetric Witten's black hole in two-dimensions, generalization of bosonic model suggested by Kazakov et. al. We find a free field realization of the partition function of the matrix model, which includes Ramond-Ramond perturbations in the type 0A theory. In a simple case, the partition function is factorized into two determinants, which are given by $τ$ function of an integrable system. We work out the genus expansion of the partition function. Holographic relation with the supersymmetric Witten's black hole is checked b…
We study families of quantum field theories of free bosons on a compact Riemann surface of genus g. For the case g > 0 these theories are parameterized by holomorphic line bundles of degree g-1, and for the case g=0 - by smooth closed Jordan curves on the complex plane. In both cases we define a notion of tau-function as a partition function of the theory and evaluate it explicitly. For the case g > 0 the tau-function is an analytic torsion [3], and for the case g=0 - the regularized energy of a certain natural pseudo-measure on the interior domain of a closed curve. For these cases we rigorou…
We investigate some aspects of the relationship between matrix string theory and light-cone string field theory by analysing the correspondence between the two-loop thermal partition function of DLCQ strings in flat space and the integrated two-point correlator of twist fields in a symmetric product orbifold conformal field theory at one-loop order. This is carried out by deriving combinatorial expressions for generic twist field correlation functions in permutation orbifolds using the covering surface method, by deriving the one-loop modification of the twist field interaction vertex, and by …
Since any string theory involves a path integration on the world-sheet metric, their partition functions are volume forms on the moduli space of genus g Riemann surfaces M_g, or on its super analog. It is well known that modular invariance fixes strong constraints that in some cases appear only at higher genus. Here we classify all the Weyl and modular invariant partition functions given by the path integral on the world-sheet metric, together with space-time coordinates, b-c and/or beta-gamma systems, that correspond to volume forms on M_g. This was a long standing question, advocated by Bela…
The type IIA superstring partition function Z_IIA on the euclidean attractor geometry AdS_2 x S^2 x CY_3, computes the modified elliptic genus Z_BH of the associated black hole. The hybrid formalism of superstrings defined as a conformally invariant sigma model on the coset supermanifold PSU(1,1|2)/U(1)xU(1), together with Calabi-Yau and chiral boson CFTs, is used to calculate Z_IIA. The sigma model action on AdS_2 x S^2 is explicitly written in U(1)xU(1) invariant variables. The N=2 generators of AdS_2 x S^2 x CY_3 are enlarged and embedded in an N=4 topological algebra. The world sheet super…
We continue the development of the topological membrane approach to open and unoriented string theories. We study orbifolds of topologically massive gauge theory defined on the geometry $[0,1]\timesΣ$, where $Σ$ is a generic compact Riemann surface. The orbifold operations are constructed by gauging the discrete symmetries of the bulk three-dimensional field theory. Multi-loop bosonic string vacuum amplitudes are thereby computed as bulk correlation functions of the gauge theory. It is shown that the three-dimensional correlators naturally reproduce twisted and untwisted sectors in the case of…
