Goldman parametrizes the $\mathrm{PSL}_3(\mathbb{R})$-Hitchin component of a closed oriented hyperbolic surface of genus $g$ by $16g-16$ parameters. Among them, $10g-10$ coordinates are canonical. We prove that the $\mathrm{PSL}_3(\mathbb{R})$-Hitchin component equipped with the Atiyah-Bott-Goldman symplectic form admits a global Darboux coordinate system such that the half of its coordinates are canonical Goldman coordinates. To this end, we show a version of the action-angle principle and the Zocca-type decomposition formula for the symplectic form of H. Kim and Guruprasad-Huebschmann-Jeffrey-Weinstein given to symplectic leaves of the Hitchin component.
In this paper, we study Fuchsian loci of ${\rm PSL}_n(\mathbb{R})$-Hitchin components. In particular, using the Bonahon-Dreyer parametrization of ${\rm PSL}_n(\mathbb{R})$-Hitchin components, we give an explicit parametrization of Fuchsian loci of a pair of pants.
In this paper we show some properties of triangle invariants and shearing invariants of PSL(n,R)-Fuchsian representations. Moreover, using the Bonahon-Dreyer parameterization, we show that the Fuchsian locus of Hitchin components corresponds to a slice.
The Hitchin component Hit_n(S) of a closed surface S is a preferred component of the character variety X_PSL_n(R)(S) consisting of homomorphisms from the fundamental group pi_1(S) to the Lie group PSL_n(R)(S), whose elements enjoy remarkable geometric and dynamical properties. We consider a certain type of deformations of the elements of Hit_n(S), called shearing deformations, and compute their pairing for the Atiyah-Bott-Goldman symplectic form of the character variety.
Given a Hitchin representation $ρ\colon π_1(S) \to \PSL_n(\mathbb{R})$, we construct $n$ continuous functions $\ell_i^ρ\colon \mathcal \CH(S) \to \mathbb{R}$ defined on the space of Hölder geodesic currents $\CH(S)$ such that, for a closed, oriented curve $γ$ in $S$, the $i$--th eigenvalue of the matrix $ρ(γ)\in \PSL_n(\mathbb{R})$ is of the form $\pm \mathrm{exp}\, \ell_i^ρ(γ)$: such functions generalize to higher rank Thurston's length function of Fuchsian re\presentations. Identities, diffe\rentiability properties of these lengths $\ell_i^ρ$, as well as applications to eigenvalue estimates,…
We construct a geometric, real analytic parametrization of the Hitchin component Hit_n(S) of the PSL_n(R)-character variety R_{PSL_n(R)}(S) of a closed surface S. The approach is explicit and constructive. In essence, our parametrization is an extension of Thurston's shear coordinates for the Teichmueller space of a closed surface, combined with Fock-Goncharov's coordinates for the moduli space of positive framed local systems of a punctured surface. More precisely, given a maximal geodesic lamination λin S with finitely many leaves, we introduce two types of invariants for elements of the Hit…
We prove a sharp inequality between the Blaschke and Hilbert distance on a proper convex domain: for any two points $x$ and $y$, \[d^B(x,y) < d^H(x,y) +1.\] We obtain two interesting consequences: the first one is the volume entropy rigidity for Hilbert geometries : for any proper convex domain of $\mathbb{R}\mathbf{P}^n$, the volume of a ball of radius $R$ grows at most like $e^{(n-1)R}$. The second consequence is the following fact: for any Hitchin representation of a surface group into $\mathrm{PSL}(3,\mathbb{R})$, there exists a Fuchsian representation $j$ in $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ s…
The Hitchin component is a connected component of the character variety of reductive group homomorphisms from the fundamental group of a closed surface S of genus greater than 1 to the Lie group PSL_m(R). The Teichmuller space of S naturally embeds into the Hitchin component. The limit points in the Thurston compactification of the Teichmuller space are well-understood. Our main goal is to provide non-trivial sufficient conditions on a sequence of Hitchin representations so that the limit of this sequence in the Parreau boundary can be described as an action on a tree. These non-trivial condit…
For a closed surface S, the Hitchin component Hit_n(S) is a preferred component of the character variety consisting of group homomorphisms from the fundamental group pi_1(S) to the Lie group PSL_n(R). We construct a parametrization of the Hitchin component that is well-adapted to a maximal geodesic lamination on the surface. This is a natural extension of Thurston's parametrization of the Teichmueller space of S by shear coordinates associated to a maximal geodesic lamination, corresponding to the case n=2. However, significantly new ideas are needed in this higher dimensional case. The articl…
Let $(S,g_0)$ be a hyperbolic surface, $ρ$ be a Hitchin representation for $PSL(n,\mathbb R)$, and $f$ be the unique $ρ$-equivariant harmonic map from $(\widetilde S, \widetilde g_0)$ to the corresponding symmetric space. We show its energy density satisfies $e(f)\geq 1$ and equality holds at one point only if $e(f)\equiv 1$ and $ρ$ is the base $n$-Fuchsian representation of $(S,g_0)$. In particular, we show given a Hitchin representation $ρ$ for $PSL(n,\mathbb R)$, every $ρ$-equivariant minimal immersion $f$ from a hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H^2$ into the corresponding symmetric space $X$ is d…
In this paper we complete the topological description of the space of representations of the fundamental group of a punctured surface in SL(2,R) with prescribed behavior at the punctures and nonzero Euler number, following the strategy employed by Hitchin in the unpunctured case and exploiting Hitchin-Simpson correspondence between flat bundles and Higgs bundles in the parabolic case. This extends previous results by Boden-Yokogawa and Nasatyr-Steer. A relevant portion of the paper is intended to give an overview of the subject.
For $S$ a closed surface of genus $g\geq2$, we construct a canonical diffeomorphism from the degree $3$ Fock-Thomas space $\mathcal{T}^3(S)$ of higher complex structures to the $\text{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$ Hitchin component. Our construction is equivariant with respect to natural actions of the mapping class group $\text{Mod}(S)$. For all $n \geq 3$, we show that the Fock-Thomas space $\mathcal{T}^n(S)$ has a canonical vector bundle structure over Teichmüller space. We then construct a $\text{Mod}(S)$-equivariant bundle isomorphism from $\mathcal{T}^n(S)$ to a sub-bundle of the restriction of the…
We introduce a new approach for computing the monodromy of the Hitchin map and use this to completely determine the monodromy for the moduli spaces of $L$-twisted $G$-Higgs bundles, for the groups $G = GL(2,\mathbb{C})$, $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ and $PSL(2,\mathbb{C})$. We also determine the twisted Chern class of the regular locus, which obstructs the existence of a section of the moduli space of $L$-twisted Higgs bundles of rank $2$ and degree $deg(L)+1$. By counting orbits of the monodromy action with $\mathbb{Z}_2$-coefficients, we obtain in a unified manner the number of components of the chara…
Using the work of Bonahon-Dreyer and Fock-Goncharov, one can construct a real-analytic parameterization for the PSL(n,R) Hitchin component of a surface S, that is explicitly analogous to the Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates on the Teichmuller space of S. Given a Hitchin representation, we give a lower bound on the "length" of any closed curve on S in terms of the parameters describing this representation. We then show that this lower bound is good enough to produce large families of sequences in the Hitchin component along which the topological entropy converges to 0.
In this article we define new flows on the Hitchin components for PGL(V). Special examples of these flows are associated to simple closed curves on the surface and give generalized twist flows. Other examples, so called eruption flows, are associated to pair of pants in S and capture new phenomena which are not present in the case when n = 2. Using these flows, we construct a global coordinate system on the Hitchin component. In a companion paper to this article two of the authors develop new tools to compute the Goldman symplectic form on the Hitchin component, and prove that this global coor…

Given two Fuchsian representations $ρ_l$ and $ρ_r$ of the fundamental group of a closed oriented surface $S$ of genus $\geq 2$, we study the relation between Lagrangian submanifolds of $M_ρ=(\mathbb{H}^2/ρ_l(π_1(S)))\times (\mathbb{H}^2/ρ_r(π_1(S)))$ and $ρ$-equivariant embeddings $σ$ of $\widetilde S$ into Anti-de Sitter space, where $ρ=(ρ_l,ρ_r)$ is the corresponding representation into $\mathrm{PSL}_2\mathbb R\times \mathrm{PSL}_2\mathbb R$. It is known that, if $σ$ is a maximal embedding, then its Gauss map takes values in the unique minimal Lagrangian submanifold $Λ_{\mathrm{ML}}$ of $M_ρ…
In this article we prove that iterated renormalisations of $\mathcal{C}^r$ circle diffeomorphisms with $d$ breaks, $r>2$, with given size of breaks, converge to an invariant family of piecewise Moebius maps, of dimension $2d$. We prove that this invariant family identifies with a \textit{relative character variety} $χ(π_1 Σ, \mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R}), \mathbf{h})$ where $Σ$ is a $d$-holed torus, and that the renormalisation operator identifies with a sub-action of the mapping class group $\mathrm{MCG}(Σ)$. This action is known to preserves a symplectic form, thanks to the work of Guruprasad-H…
We study a particular class of representations from the fundamental groups of punctured spheres $Σ_{0,n}$ to the group $\text{PSL} (2,\mathbb R)$ (and their moduli spaces), that we call \emph{super-maximal}. Super-maximal representations are shown to be \emph{totally non hyperbolic}, in the sense that every simple closed curve is mapped to a non hyperbolic element. They are also shown to be \emph{geometrizable} (appart from the reducible super-maximal ones) in the following very strong sense : for any element of the Teichmüller space $\mathcal T_{0,n}$, there is a unique holomorphic equivarian…
