This manuscript (v2) is the combinatorics-focused version of an earlier paper (v1), which combined combinatorics with biology. Biological aspects are now discussed in a separate manuscript
The generalized Fibonacci recurrence $g_n=g_{n-k}+g_{n-m}$ was recently used to demonstrate the theoretically optimal nature of limited senescence in morphologically symmetrically dividing bacteria. Here, we study this recurrence from a more abstract viewpoint, as a general model for asymmetric branching, and interpret solutions for different initial conditions in terms of branching-related quantities. We provide a compact diagrammatic representation for the evolution of this process which leads to an explicit binomial identity for the sums of elements lying on the diagonals $kx+my=n$ in Pascal's triangle $\mathbb N_0\times \mathbb N_0\ni(x,y)\mapsto {x+y\choose x}$, previously sought by Dickinson [Dic50], Raab [Raa63], and Green [Gre68].
We give a simplified presentation of some results about recurrences of certain sequences of binomial sums in terms of (generalized) Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials.
We present a natural, combinatorial problem whose solution is given by the meta-Fibonacci recurrence relation $a(n) = \sum_{i=1}^p a(n-i+1 - a(n-i))$, where $p$ is prime. This combinatorial problem is less general than those given in [3] (B. Jackson, F. Ruskey, 2006) and [4] (F. Ruskey, C. Deugau, 2009), but it has the advantage of having a simpler statement.
In this note we investigate the solutions of certain meta-Fibonacci recurrences of the form $f(n)=f(n-f(n-1))+f(n-2)$ for various sets of initial conditions. In the case when $f(n)=1$ for $n\leq 1$, we prove that the resulting integer sequence is closely related to the function counting binary partitions of a certain type.
The skew of a binary string is the difference between the number of zeroes and the number of ones, while the length of the string is the sum of these two numbers. We consider certain suffixes of the lexicographically-least de Bruijn sequence at natural breakpoints of the binary string. We show that the skew and length of these suffixes are enumerated by sequences generalizing the Fibonacci and Lucas numbers, respectively.
Let $V(k)$ denote the waiting time, the number of trials needed to get a consecutive $k$ ones. We propose recurrence algorithms for the probability distribution function (pdf) and the probability generating function (pgf) of $V(k)$ in sequences of independent and Markov dependent Bernoulli trials using generalized Fibonacci sequences of order $k$. Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) methods for the probability distributions are presented in both cases with simulation examples.
We prove a linear recurrence relation for a large family of generalized Schreier sets, which generalizes the Fibonacci recurrence proved by Bird and higher order Fibonacci recurrence proved by the second author et al. Furthermore, we show a relationship between Schreier-type sets and Turán graphs.
In this article we provide with combinatorial proofs of some recent identities due to Sury and McLaughlin. We show that, the solution of a general linear recurrence with constant coefficients can be interpreted as a determinant of a matrix. Also, we derive a determinantal expression of Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. We prove Binets formula for Fibonacci and Lucas numbers in a purely combinatorial way and in course of doing so, we find a determinantal identity, which we think to be new.
Zeckendorf's theorem states that any positive integer can be written uniquely as a sum of non-adjacent Fibonacci numbers; this result has been generalized to many recurrence relations, especially those arising from linear recurrences with leading term positive. We investigate legal decompositions arising from two new sequences: the $(s,b)$-Generacci sequence and the Fibonacci Quilt sequence. Both satisfy recurrence relations with leading term zero, and thus previous results and techniques do not apply. These sequences exhibit drastically different behavior. We show that the $(s,b)$-Generacci s…
The Fibonacci numbers satisfy the famous recurrence $F_n = F_{n - 1} + F_{n - 2}$. The theory of C-finite sequences ensures that the Fibonacci numbers whose indices are divisible by $m$, namely $F_{mn}$, satisfy a similar recurrence for every positive integer $m$, and these recurrences have an explicit, uniform representation. We will show that $a(mn)$ has a uniform recurrence over $m$ for any C-finite sequence $a(n)$ and use this to automatically derive some famous summation identities.
In this paper, new families of generalized Fibonacci and Lucas numbers are introduced. In addition, we present the recurrence relations and the generating functions of the new families for $k=2$.
We study determinants of matrices whose entries are powers of Fibonacci numbers. We then extend the results to include entries that are powers of generalized Fibonacci numbers defined as a second-order linear recurrence relation. These studies have led us to discover a fundamental identity of determinant involving powers of linear polynomials. Finally, we discuss the determinants of matrices whose entries are products of the generalized Fibonacci numbers.
Zeckendorf proved that every positive integer can be expressed as the sum of non-consecutive Fibonacci numbers. This theorem inspired a beautiful game, the Zeckendorf Game. Two players begin with $n \ 1$'s and take turns applying rules inspired by the Fibonacci recurrence, $F_{n+1} = F_n + F_{n-1}$, until a decomposition without consecutive terms is reached; whoever makes the last move wins. We look at a game resulting from a generalization of the Fibonacci numbers, the Fibonacci Quilt sequence. These arise from the two-dimensional geometric property of tiling the plane through the Fibonacci s…
We establish several recurrence relations and an explicit formula for V(n), the number of factorizations of the length-n prefix of the Fibonacci word into a (not necessarily strictly) decreasing sequence of standard Fibonacci words. In particular, we show that the sequence V(n) is the shuffle of the ceilings of two linear functions of n.
In this paper we determine some properties of Fibonacci octonions. Also, we introduce the generalized Fibonacci-Lucas octonions and we investigate some properties of these elements.
We present here some new identities for generalizations of Fibonacci and Lucas numbers by combinatorially interpreting these numbers in terms of numbers of certain tilings of a $1 \times m$ board. As a consequence, some new interesting identities involving the ordinaries Fibonacci and Lucas numbers are derived.
In this paper we consider particular generalized compositions of a natural number with a given number of parts. Its number is a weighted polynomial coefficient. The number of all generalized compositions of a natural number is a weighted $r$-generalized Fibonacci number. A relationship between these two numbers will be derived. We shall thus obtain a generalization of the well-known formula connecting Fibonacci numbers with the binomial coefficients.
One of the most interesting results of the last century was the proof completed by Matijasevich that computably enumerable sets are precisely the diophantine sets [MRDP Theorem, 9], thus settling, based on previously developed machinery, Hilbert's question whether there exists a general algorithm for checking the solvability in integers of any diophantine equation. In this paper we describe techniques to prove the nonexistence of polynomials in two variables for some simple generalizations of the Fibonacci sequence (explicit diophantine representation of Fibonacci numbers were known from Jones…
We define generalized bivariate polynomials, from which upon specification of initial conditions the bivariate Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials are obtained. Using essentially a matrix approach we derive identities and inequalities that in most cases generalize known results.
In this paper, we give upper and lower bounds for the spectral norms of r-circulant matrices with the generalized bi-periodic Fibonacci numbers. Moreover, we investigate the eigenvalues and determinants of these matrices.
In \cite{Ka}, the authors obtained a method for deriving special matrices, whose powers are related to Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. In the study, it has been developed a method for deriving special matrices of $3\times 3$ dimensions, whose powers are related to Horadam and generalized Fibonacci numbers, and some special matrices have been found via the method developed.
Two new generalized Fibonacci number summation identities are stated and proved, and two other new generalized Fibonacci number summation identities are derived from these, of which two special cases are already known in literature.
It's the age-old recurrence with a twist: sum the last two terms and if the result is composite, divide by its smallest prime divisor to get the next term (e.g., 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 4, 3, 7, ...). These sequences exhibit pseudo-random behaviour and generally terminate in a handful of cycles, properties reminiscent of 3x+1 and related sequences. We examine the elementary properties of these 'subprime' Fibonacci sequences.
We evaluate a determinant of generalized Fibonacci numbers, thus providing a common generalization of several determinant evaluation results that have previously appeared in the literature, all of them extending Cassini's identity for Fibonacci numbers.
We focus on a family of equalities pioneered by Zhang and generalized by Zao and Wang and hence by Mansour which involves self convolution of generalized Fibonacci numbers. We show that all these formulas are nicely stated in only one equation involving a bivariate ordinary generating function and we give also a formula for the coefficients appearing in that context. As a consequence, we give the general forms for the equalities of Zhang, Zao-Wang and Mansour.
The Fibonacci number is the residue of a rational function, from which follows that Fibonacci number summation identities can be derived with the integral representation method, a method also used to derive combinatorial identities. A number of weighted generalized Fibonacci number summation identities are derived this way. From these identities some infinite series, generating functions and convolution identities are obtained. In addition, some weighted generalized Fibonacci number summation identities with binomial coefficients are derived. Many examples of both types of summation identities…
In this paper, we give two new coding algorithms by means of right circulant matrices with elements generalized Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials. For this purpose, we study basic properties of right circulant matrices using generalized Fibonacci polynomials $F_{p,q,n}\left( x\right) $, generalized Lucas polynomials $L_{p,q,n}\left( x\right) $ and geometric sequences.
Starting with some determinants of binomial coefficients which are related to Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials we study similar determinants for some generalizations of these polynomials and their q-analogues.
In this paper, we establish several formulae for sums and alternating sums of products of generalized Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. In particular, we recover and extend all results of Z. Cerin and Z. Cerin & G. M. Gianella, more easily.
A permutation $π\in S_n$ is said to {\it avoid} a permutation $σ\in S_k$ whenever $π$ contains no subsequence with all of the same pairwise comparisons as $σ$. For any set $R$ of permutations, we write $S_n(R)$ to denote the set of permutations in $S_n$ which avoid every permutation in $R$. In 1985 Simion and Schmidt showed that $|S_n(132, 213, 123)|$ is equal to the Fibonacci number $F_{n+1}$. In this paper we generalize this result in several ways. We first use a result of Mansour to show that for any permutation $τ$ in a certain infinite family of permutations, $|S_n(132, 213, τ)|$ is given…
This paper is concerned with developing some new connection formulae between two generalized classes of Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials. All the connection coefficients involve hypergeometric functions of the type $_2F_{1}(z)$, for certain $z$. Several new connection formulae between some famous polynomials such as Fibonacci, Lucas, Pell, Fermat, Pell-Lucas, and Fermat-Lucas polynomials are deduced as special cases of the derived connection formulae. Some of the introduced formulae generalize some of those existing in the literature. As two applications of the derived connection formulae, some…
Using an explicit computable expression of ordinary multinomials, we establish three remarkable connections, with the q-generalized Fibonacci sequence, the exponential partial Bell partition polynomials and the density of convolution powers of the discrete uniform distribution. Identities and various combinatorial relations are derived.
In this second paper, we look at the following question: are the properties of the trees associated to the tilings $\{p,4\}$ and $\{p$+$2,3\}$ of the hyperbolic plane still true if we consider a finitely generated tree by the same rules but rooted at a black node? The direct answer is no, but new properties arise, no more complex than in the case of a tree rooted at a white node, and worth of interest. The present paper is an extension of the previous paper: arXiv:1904.12135.
We provide a trace partitioned Gray code for the set of q-ary strings avoiding a pattern constituted by k consecutive equal symbols. The definition of this Gray code is based on two different constructions, according to the parity of q. This result generalizes, and is based on, a Gray code for binary strings avoiding k consecutive 0's.
We study matrices which transform the sequence of Fibonacci or Lucas polynomials with even index to those with odd index and vice versa. They turn out to be intimately related to generalized Stirling numbers and to Bernoulli, Genocchi and tangent numbers and give rise to various identities between these numbers. There is also a close connection with the Akiyama-Tanigawa algorithm.
The paper deals with some generalizations of Fibonacci and Lucas sequences, arising from powers of paths and cycles, respectively. In the first part of the work we provide a formula for the number of edges of the Hasse diagram of the independent sets of the h-th power of a path ordered by inclusion. For h=1 such a diagram is called a Fibonacci cube, and for h>1 we obtain a generalization of the Fibonacci cube. Consequently, we derive a generalized notion of Fibonacci sequence, called h-Fibonacci sequence. Then, we show that the number of edges of a generalized Fibonacci cube is obtained by con…
We establish new product identities involving the $q$-analogue of the Fibonacci numbers. We show that the identities lead to alternate expressions of generating functions for close-packed dimers on non-orientable surfaces.
The {\em Fibonacci cube} of dimension $n$, denoted as $Γ\_n$, is the subgraph of the $n$-cube $Q\_n$ induced by vertices with no consecutive 1's. In an article of 2016 Ashrafi and his co-authors proved the non-existence of perfect codes in $Γ\_n$ for $n\geq 4$. As an open problem the authors suggest to consider the existence of perfect codes in generalization of Fibonacci cubes. The most direct generalization is the family $Γ\_n(1^s)$ of subgraphs induced by strings without $1^s$ as a substring where $s\geq 2$ is a given integer. We prove the existence of a perfect code in $Γ\_n(1^s)$ for $n=2…
We explore the sums of $k$ consecutive terms in the generalized Fibonacci sequence $\left(G_n\right)_{n \geq 0}$ given by the recurrence $G_n = G_{n-1} + G_{n-2}$ for all $n \geq 2$ with integral initial conditions $G_0$ and $G_1$. In particular, we give precise values for the greatest common divisor (GCD) of all sums of $k$ consecutive terms of $\left(G_n\right)_{n \geq 0}$. When $G_0 = 0$ and $G_1 = 1$, we yield the GCD of all sums of $k$ consecutive Fibonacci numbers, and when $G_0 = 2$ and $G_1 = 1$, we yield the GCD of all sums of $k$ consecutive Lucas numbers. Denoting the GCD of all sum…
We present a quite curious generalization of multi-step Fibonacci numbers. For any positive rational $q$, we enumerate binary words of length $n$ whose maximal factors of the form $0^a1^b$ satisfy $a = 0$ or $aq > b$. When $q$ is an integer we rediscover classical multi-step Fibonacci numbers: Fibonacci, Tribonacci, Tetranacci, etc. When $q$ is not an integer, obtained recurrence relations are connected to certain restricted integer compositions. We also discuss Gray codes for these words, and a possibly novel generalization of the golden ratio.
In this article, we have proposed a public key cryptography using Affine-Hill cipher with a generalized Fibonacci matrix(called multinacci matrix). Also proposed a key establishment(exchange of key matrix $K=Q_λ^{k}$ of order $λ\timesλ$ for encryption-decryption) scheme with the help of multinacci sequences under prime modulo. In this scheme, instead of exchanging key matrix, we need to exchange the only pair of numbers $(λ, k)$, which reduces the time complexity as well as space complexity and comes with a large key-space.
In 2021, Guyer and Mbirika gave two equivalent formulas that computed the greatest common divisor (GCD) of all sums of $k$ consecutive terms in the generalized Fibonacci sequence $\left(G_n\right)_{n \geq 0}$ given by the recurrence $G_n = G_{n-1} + G_{n-2}$ for all $n \geq 2$ with integral initial conditions $G_0$ and $G_1$. In this current paper, we extend their results to the GCD of all sums of $k$ consecutive squares of these numbers. Denoting these GCD values by the symbol $\mathcal{G}_{G_0, G_1}^2\!(k)$, we prove $\mathcal{G}_{G_0, G_1}^2\!(k) = \gcd\left(G_k G_{k+1} - G_0 G_1,\; G_{k+1}…
