Organic materials have attracted recent interest as thermoelectric (TE) converters due to their low cost and ease of fabrication. We examine the effects of disorder on the TE properties of semiconducting polymers based on the Gaussian disorder model (GDM) for site energies while employing Pauli's master equation approach to model hopping between localized sites. Our model is in good agreement with experimental results and a useful tool to study hopping transport. We show that stronger overlap between sites can improve the electrical conductivity without adversely affecting the Seebeck coefficient. We find that positional disorder aids the formation of new conduction paths with an increased probability of carriers in high energy sites leading to a simultaneous increase in electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient. On the other hand, energetic disorder leads to increased energy gap between sites, hindering transport, and adversely affects both conductivity and Seebeck. Furthermore, positional correlation primarily affects conductivity, while correlation in energy has no effect on TE properties of polymers. Our results also show that the Lorenz number increases with Seebeck coefficient, largely deviating from the Sommerfeld value, in agreement with experiments and in contrast to band conductors. We conclude that reducing energetic disorder while increasing positional disorder can lead to higher TE power factors.
Low temperature (<400 K) thermoelectric properties of semiconducting RuIn3 and metallic IrIn3 are reported. RuIn3 is a narrow band gap semiconductor with a large n-type Seebeck coefficient at room temperature (S(290K)~400 μV/K), but the thermoelectric Figure of merit (ZT(290K) = 0.007) is small because of high electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity (κ(290 K) ~ 2.0 W/m K). IrIn3 is a metal with low thermopower at room temperature (S(290K)~20 μV/K) . Iridium substitution on the ruthenium site has a dramatic effect on transport properties, which leads to a large improvement in the power …
Structural and thermoelectric properties of metallic and semiconducting Sb2Te3 are reported. X-Ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy studies reveal that semiconducting sample have higher defect density. Nature and origin of possible defects are highlighted. Semiconducting Sb2Te3 hosts larger numbers of defects, which act as scattering center and give rise to the increased value of resistivity, thermopower and power factor. Thermopower data indicates p-type nature of the synthesized samples. It is evidenced that the surface states are often mixed with the bulk state, giving rise to metallicity…
The paper describes preliminary investigations of a new effect in conducting anisotropic liquids, which leads to thermoelectric conversion of energy. Nematic liquid crystals with semiconducting dopes are used. A thermoelectric figure of merit ZT = 0.2 is obtained in experiments. The effect can be explained by assuming that the thermocurrent in semiconducting nematics, in contrast to the Seebeck effect, is a nonlinear function of the temperature gradient and of the temperature itself. Though the discovered effect has to be further investigated, the data obtained suggest that it can be effective…
We have theoretically investigated the thermoelectric properties of impurity-doped one-dimensional semiconductors, focusing on nitrogen-substituted (N-substituted) carbon nanotubes (CNTs), using the Kubo formula combined with a self-consistent $t$-matrix approximation. N-substituted CNTs exhibit extremely high thermoelectric power factor ($PF$) values originating from a characteristic of one-dimensional materials where decrease in the carrier density increase both the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient in the low-N regime. The chemical potential dependence of the $PF$ values o…
Precise determination of the solid-state microstructure of semiconducting polymers is of paramount importance for the further development of these materials in various organic electronic technologies. Yet, prior characterization of the ordering of semiconducting polymers often resulted in conundrums in which X-ray scattering and microscopy yielded seemingly contradicting results. Here, based on fast scanning calorimetry, we introduce for the first time the concept of the semi-para-crystallinity and measurement of the degree of para-crystallinity (ordered volume/mass fraction) in a set of mater…
For high efficiency thermoelectric power conversion not only improvement of materials properties but also prediction and synthesis of new thermoelectric materials is needed. Here we have carried out a systematic investigation on thermoelectric performance of newly predicted two dimensional (2D) semiconducting SiS2 and SiSe2 monolayers of group IVA-VIA family using density functional theory (DFT) and Boltzmann transport equation (BTE). Our computed values of lattice thermal conductivity (kph) are ultralow which result very high thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) value of 0.78 (0.80) at 500K in…
We report results on polarization-dependent photoinduced discharge in oriented fibers and films of ladder-type, electron-transporting polymer poly (benzimidazobenzophenanthroline), BBL. The photocarrier generation efficiency in the fiber which is indicated by the rate of discharge, is found to be distinctly higher for light polarized parallel to the fiber axis as compared to the radially perpendicular direction . Similar results, with photocarrier generation efficiency anisotropy ~ 10 are obtained for oriented films. These observations are different from previously obtained results on polypara…
We found a giant Seebeck effect in semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films, which exhibited a performance comparable to that of commercial Bi2Te3 alloys. Carrier doping of semiconducting SWCNT films further improved the thermoelectric performance. These results were reproduced well by first-principles transport simulations based on a simple SWCNT junction model. These findings suggest strategies that pave the way for emerging printed, all-carbon, flexible thermoelectric devices.
We deposited thin layers of CdS and ZnS nanoparticles embedded in a thermoplastic cyclo-olephin copolymer (COC) with elevated optical transparency and highly bio-compatible. The nanoparticles were obtained by thiolate precursors previously dispersed in the polymer upon thermal treatment at temperatures ranging between 200 and 300 Celsius degrees depending on the desired size. The precursor/polymer solutions were spin coated in order to get thin films. The samples were mainly characterised by X-ray reflectivity (XRR) and by High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) analyses. The …
We investigate the thermoelectric properties of some semiconducting Chevrel phases. Band structure calculations are used to compute thermopowers and to estimate of the effects of alloying and disorder on carrier mobility. Alloying on the Mo site with transition metals like Re, Ru or Tc to reach a semiconducting composition causes large changes in the electronic structure at the Fermi level. Such alloys are expected to have low carrier mobilities. Filling with transition metals was also found to be incompatible with high thermoelectric performance based on the calculated electronic structures. …
We present here a brief overview of our work in developing a convolutionless quantum master equation approach suitable for mesoscopic sized systems. Our final equation can be used in the regimes where the golden rule approach is not applicable. Here we apply the approach to study the electronic relaxation in several models with the finite number of normal modes. For such mesoscopic systems the relaxation behavior differs substantially from the simple exponential relaxation. In particular, the equation shows the appearance of the recurrence phenomena on a time-scale determined by the slowest mo…
The nature of the primary photoexcitations in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (S-SWCNTs) is of strong current interest. We have studied the emission spectra of S-SWCNTs and two different $π$-conjugated polymers in solutions and films, and have also performed ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy on these systems. The emission spectra relative to the absorption bands are very similar in S-SWCNTs and polymers, with redshifted photoluminescence in films showing exciton migration. The transient photoinduced absorptions (PAs) in SWCNTs and $π$-conjugated polymers are also remarkably simil…
Simultaneously optimizing performances, processability and fabrication cost of organic electronic materials is the continual source of compromise hindering the development of disruptive applications. In this work, we identified a strategy to achieve record conductivity values of one of the most benchmarked semiconducting polymers by doping with an entirely solution-processed, water-free and cost-effective technique. High electrical conductivity for poly(3-hexylthiophene) up to 21 S/cm has been achieved, using a commercially available electron acceptor as both a Lewis acid and an oxidizing agen…
We theoretically investigate the thermoelectric properties of semiconducting (gapped) materials by varying the degrees of polynomials in their energy dispersion relations, in which either the valence or conduction energy dispersion depends on the wave vector raised to the power of two, four, and six. The thermoelectric transport coefficients such as the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity are calculated within the linearized Boltzmann transport theory combined with the relaxation time approximation. We consider various effects such as band gaps, dimensionalit…
The exceptional interest in improving the limitations of data storage, molecular electronics, and optoelectronics has promoted the development of an ever increasing number of techniques used to pattern polymers at micro and nanoscale. Most of them rely on Atomic Force Microscopy to thermally or electrostatically induce mass transport, thereby creating topographic features. Here we show that the mechanical interaction of the tip of the Atomic Force Microscope with the surface of a class of conjugate polymers produces a local increase of molecular disorder, inducing a localized lowering of the s…
We discuss implications of a recent experimental breakthrough which uses a fluorescence-doped flexible semiconducting polymer to construct a single-molecule sensor which can detect ultra-weak forces in the molecular environment, with a grey scale down to 300 femtonewtons.
Highly oriented polymer films can show considerable anisotropy in the thermoelectric properties leading to power factors beyond those predicted by the widely obeyed power law linking the thermopower $S$ and the electrical conductivity $σ$ as $S\proptoσ^{-1/4}$. This has led to encouraging practical results with respect to the electrical conductivity, notwithstanding that the conditions necessary to enhance $σ$ and $S$ simultaneously are less clear. Here, kinetic Monte Carlo simulations are used to study the impact of structural anisotropy on the thermoelectric properties of disordered organic …
We report here metal to insulator transition, colossal Seebeck coefficient and ultralow thermal conductivity (0.0057th of its bulk value, significantly smaller than many well-known thermoelectric materials and silicon, showing potential applications in thermoelectrics, electronics and photonics for heat dissipation) in monodispersed well characterized Ni nanoparticles. As a consequence, thermoelectric power factor and figure of merit are significantly enhanced compared to their bulk counterpart. Interestingly, a systematic crossover from metallic to semiconducting to finally electrically insul…
Mechanical stability of the ZnIn2X4 monolayers. The ZnIn2S4 and ZnIn2Se4 are semiconductors with direct band gaps of 3.94 and 2.77 eV, respectively whereas the ZnIn2Te4 shows an indirect band gap of 1.84 eV at the G0W0 level. The optical properties achieved from the solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation predict the exciton binding energy of the ZnIn2S4, ZnIn2Se4, and ZnIn2Te4 monolayers to be 0.51, 0.41, and 0.34 eV, respectively, suggesting the high stability of the excitonic states against thermal dissociation. Using the iterative solutions of the Boltzmann transport equation accelerated b…
Research on conjugated polymers for thermoelectric applications has made tremendous progress in recent years, which is accompanied by surging interest in molecular doping as a means to achieve the high electrical conductivities that are required. A detailed understanding of the complex relationship between the doping process, the structural as well as energetic properties of the polymer films, and the resulting thermoelectric behavior is slowly emerging. This review summarizes recent developments and strategies that permit enhancing the electrical conductivity of p- and n-type conjugated polym…
Hybrid (organic-inorganic) materials have emerged as a promising class of thermoelectric materials, achieving power factors exceeding those of either constituent. The mechanism of this enhancement is still under debate, and pinpointing the underlying physics has proven difficult. In this work, we combine transport measurements with theoretical simulations and first principles calculations on a prototypical PEDOT:PSS-Te(Cux) nanowire hybrid material system to understand the effect of templating and charge redistribution on the thermoelectric performance. Further, we apply the recently developed…
The thermoelectric properties and electronic band structures for Se-doped Co3SnInS2 were examined. The parent compound of this material (Co3Sn2S2) has two kinds of Sn sites (Sn1 and Sn2 sites). The density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the indium substitution at the Sn2 site induces a metallic band structure, on the other hand, a semiconducting band structure is obtained from substitution at the Sn1 site. However, according to the previous reports, since the indium atom prefers to replace the tin atom at the Sn1 site rather than the Sn2 site, the resistivity of Co3SnInS2 shows…
We report on the high-temperature (350 K <T< 1000 K) thermoelectric properties of the ternary compounds LuNiSb (cubic) and LuNiSn (orthorhombic) and a composite material (LuNiSb)$_{0.5}$(LuNiSn)$_{0.5}$. The electrical conductivity in LuNiSn is metallic, while it is semiconducting-like in LuNiSb. The Seebeck coefficient reaches -5.5 $μ$V/K at 700 K for the former compound and 66 $μ$V/K at 607 K for the latter one. The composite sample (LuNiSb)$_{0.5}$(LuNiSn)$_{0.5}$ constructed from orthorhombic matrix with cubic inclusions combines the electrical conductivity of LuNiSn with the thermoelectri…
On the quest for efficient thermoelectrics, semiconducting behavior is a targeted property. Yet, this is often difficult to achieve due to the complex interplay between electronic structure, temperature, and disorder. We find this to be the case for the thermoelectric clathrate Ba$_8$Al$_{16}$Si$_{30}$: Although this material exhibits a band gap in its groundstate, a temperature-driven partial order-disorder transition leads to its effective closing. This finding is enabled by a novel approach to calculate the temperature-dependent effective band structure of alloys. Our method fully accounts …
Recently, we reported [M. Wagner et al., J. Mater. Res. 26, 1886 (2011)] transport measurements on the semiconducting intermetallic system RuIn3 and its substitution derivatives RuIn_{3-x}A_{x} (A = Sn, Zn). Higher values of the thermoelectric figure of merit (zT = 0.45) compared to the parent compound were achieved by chemical substitution. Here, using density functional theory based calculations, we report on the microscopic picture behind the measured phenomenon. We show in detail that the electronic structure of the substitution variants of the intermetallic system RuIn_{3-x}A_{x} (A = Sn,…
We report on the discovery of a large, room temperature magnetoresistance (MR) effect in polyfluorene sandwich devices in weak magnetic fields. We characterize this effect and discuss its dependence on voltage, temperature, film thickness, electrode materials, and (unintentional) impurity concentration. We usually observed negative MR, but positive MR can also be achieved under high applied electric fields. The MR effect reaches up to 10% at fields of 10mT at room temperature. The effect shows only a weak temperature dependence and is independent of the sign and direction of the magnetic field…
The electronic structures and thermoelectric properties of semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers $\mathrm{MX_2}$ (M=Zr, Hf, Mo, W and Pt; X=S, Se and Te) are investigated by combining first-principles and Boltzmann transport theory, including spin-orbital coupling (SOC). It is found that the gap decrease increases from S to Te in each cation group, when the SOC is opened. The spin-orbital splitting has the same trend with gap reducing. Calculated results show that SOC has noteworthy detrimental effect on p-type power factor, while has a negligible influence in n-type doping…
We present an analysis of the thermoelectric properties of of $n$-type GeTe and SnTe in relation to the lead chalcogenides PbTe and PbSe. We find that the singly degenerate conduction bands of semiconducting GeTe and SnTe are highly non-ellipsoidal, even very close to the band edges. This leads to isoenergy surfaces with a strongly corrugated shape that is clearly evident at carrier concentrations well below 0.005 $e$ per formula unit (7 - 9 $\times$ 10$^{19}$cm$^{-3}$ depending on material) Analysis within Boltzmann theory suggests that this corrugation may be favorable for the thermoelectric…
As narrow optical bandgap materials, semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are rarely regarded as charge donors in photoinduced charge-transfer (PCT) reactions. However, the unique band structure and unusual exciton dynamics of SWCNTs add more possibilities to the classical PCT mechanism. In this work, we demonstrate PCT from photoexcited semiconducting (6,5) SWCNTs to a wide-bandgap wrapping poly-[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-alt-(6,6')-(2,2'-bipyridine)] (PFO-BPy) via femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. By monitoring the spectral dynamics of the SWCNT polaron, w…
Thermoelectric semiconducting materials are often evaluated by their figure-of-merit, zT. However, by using zT as the metric for showing improvements, it is not immediately clear whether the improvement is from an enhancement of the inherent material property or from optimization of the carrier concentration. Here, we review the quality factor approach which allows one to separate these two contributions even without Hall measurements. We introduce practical methods that can be used without numerical integration. We discuss the underlying effective mass model behind this method and show how it…
Temperature dependent electrical resistivity, crystal structure and heat capacity measurements reveal a resistivity drop and metal to semiconductor transition corresponding to first order structural phase transition near 400 K in Ca3Co4O9. The lattice parameter c varies smoothly with increasing temperature, while anomalies in the a, b1 and b2 lattice parameters occur at ~ 400 K. Both Ca2CoO3 and CoO2 layers become distorted above ~ 400 K associated with the metal to semiconductor transport behavior change. Resistivity and heat capacity measurements as a function of temperature under magnetic f…
We performed direct calculations of carrier hopping rates in strongly disordered conjugated polymers based on the atomic structure of the system, the corresponding electronic states and their coupling to all phonon modes. We found that the dependence of hopping rates on distance and the dependence of the mobility on temperature are significantly different than the ones stemming from the simple Miller-Abrahams model, regardless of the choice of the parameters in the model. A new model that satisfactorily describes the hopping rates in the system and avoids the explicit calculation of electron-p…
The advent of new-class of high-mobility semiconducting polymers opens up a window to address fundamental issues in electrical transport mechanism such as hopping between localized states versus extended state conduction. Here, we investigate the origin of ultra-low degree of disorder (~ 16 meV) and band-like negative temperature (T) coefficient of the field effect electron mobility in a high performance diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based semiconducting polymer. Models based on the framework of mobility edge (ME) with exponential density of states are invoked to explain the trends in transport. …
Semiconducting half- and, to a lesser extent, full-Heusler compounds are promising thermoelectric materials due to their compelling electronic properties with large power factors. However, intrinsically high thermal conductivity resulting in a limited thermoelectric efficiency has so far impeded their widespread use in practical applications. Here, we report the computational discovery of a class of hitherto unknown stable semiconducting full-Heusler compounds with ten valence electrons ($X_2YZ$, $X$=Ca, Sr, and Ba; $Y$= Au and Hg; $Z$=Sn, Pb, As, Sb, and Bi) through high-throughput $ab-initio…
Using Coulomb correlation parameters appropriate for $π$-conjugated polymers (PCPs), and a nearest neighbor hopping integral that is arrived at by fitting the energy spectra of three zigzag semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (S-SWCNTs), we are able to determine quantitatively the exciton energies and exciton binding energies of 29 S-SWCNTs within a semiempirical $π$-electron Hamiltonian that has been widely used for PCPs. Our work establishes the existence of a deep and fundamental relationship between PCPs and S-SWCNTs.
Doped films of organic small molecules are investigated with respect to their thermoelectric properties. A variety of hosts and dopants, for both n and p-doping, are compared. C$_{60}$ n-doped by Cr$_2$(hpp)$_4$ or o-MeO-DMBI-I are found to be the most promising material systems with a maximum of ZT$_\text{M}$ = 0.069 at T$_\text{M}$ = 40°C, assuming a doping-independent thermal conductivity due to phonon-based heat transport. This value is 16% of the current record reported for optimized devices employing the doped polymer PEDOT:PSS.
Typical device architectures in polymer-based optoelectronic devices, such as field effect transistors organic light emitting diodes and photovoltaic cells include sub-100 nm semiconducting polymer thin-film active layers, whose microstructure is likely to be subject to finite-size effects. The aim of this study was to investigate effect of the two-dimensional spatial confinement on the internal structure of the semiconducting polymer poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO). PFO melts were confined inside the cylindrical nanopores of anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) templates and crystallized via two crys…
We report a combined theoretical and experimental search for thermoelectric materials based on semiconducting zinc antimony. Influence of three new doping elements (sodium, potassium and boron) on the electronic properties is investigated as well as the carrier concentration and temperature dependence of the thermoelectric coefficients obtained through density-functional calculations and Boltzmann transport theory. Distortion of the electron arrangement caused by the doping elements is displayed as a deformation charge density around the atoms. Based on the band structures, the density of stat…
The incorporation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) within polymer hosts offers a great platform for the development of advanced thermoelectric (TE) composite materials. Over the years, several CNT/polymer composite formulations have been investigated on an effort to maximize the TE performance. Meanwhile, several studies focused on the decay dynamics of the charged excitons within CNTs itself and therefrom derived structures, aiming to investigate the lifetimes and the corresponding recombination processes of free charge carriers. The latter physical phenomena play a crucial role in the performance …
While charge carrier dynamics and thermal management are both keys to the operational efficiency and stability for energy-related devices, experimental techniques that can simultaneously characterize both properties are still lacking. In this paper, we use laser-induced transient grating (TG) spectroscopy to characterize thin films of the archetypal organic semiconductor regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and its blends with the electron acceptor [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) on glass substrates. While the thermal response is determined to be dominated by the substr…
The structures and thermoelectric properties of the (Bi2)m(Bi2Te3)n homologous series, derived from stacking hexagonal Bi2 and Bi2Te3 blocks, are reported. The end-members of this series are metallic Bi and semiconducting Bi2Te3; nine members of the series have been studied. The structures form an infinitely adaptive series and a unified structural description based on a modulated structure approach is presented. The as-synthesized samples have thermopowers (S) that vary from n-type for Bi2Te3 to p-type for phases rich in Bi2 blocks but with some Bi2Te3 blocks present, to n-type again for Bi m…
We report the structural, mechanical, electronic, optical, thermoelectric properties and spectroscopic limited maximum efficiency (SLME) of oxide double perovskite structure Ba2SbNbO6 and Ba2SbTaO6 compounds. All the investigations were performed through the first-principles density functional theory (DFT). The obtained values for the elastic constants reveal the mechanical stability of the studied compounds. The calculated data of bulk modulus (B), shear modulus (G), and Young's modulus (E) for Ba2SbTaO6 are found to be greater than those of Ba2SbNbO6. The ratio of Bulk to shear ratio (B/G) s…

Thermoelectric properties of a nanocontact made of two capped single wall nanotubes (SWNT) are calculated within the tight-binding approximation and Green's function method. It is found that semiconducting nanotubes can have high Seebeck coefficient very near the actual Fermi energy. This in turn leads to very high figures of merit easily exceeding one. Modifying the properties by shifting the chemical potential can be achieved by doping or application of a (nano-)gate voltage. The presence of impurities near the contact also strongly modify the properties and this can be taken advantage of, i…
Using first-principles pseudopotential method and Boltzmann transport theory, we give a comprehensive understanding of the electronic and phonon transport properties of thermoelectric material BiCuSeO. By choosing proper hybrid functional for the exchange-correlation energy, we find that the system is semiconducting with a direct band gap of ~0.8 eV, which is quite different from those obtained previously using standard functionals. Detailed analysis of a three-dimensional energy band structure indicates that there is a valley degeneracy of eight around the valence band maximum, which leads to…
Strain engineering is a very effective method to tune electronic, optical, topological and thermoelectric properties of materials. In this work, we systematically study biaxial strain dependence of electronic structures and thermoelectric properties (both electron and phonon parts) of monolayer $\mathrm{PtSe_2}$ with generalized gradient approximation (GGA) plus spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for electron part and GGA for phonon part. Calculated results show that compressive or tensile strain can induce conduction band minimum (CBM) or valence band maximum (VBM) transition, which produces important…
We report first principles calculations of the structural, electronic, elastic and vibrational properties of the semiconducting orthorhombic ZnSb compound. We study also the intrinsic point defects in order to eventually improve the thermoelectric properties of this already very promising thermoelectric material. Concerning the electronic properties, in addition to the band structure, we show that the Zn (Sb) crystallographically equivalent atoms are not exactly equivalent from the electronic point of view. Lattice dynamics, elastic and thermodynamic properties are found to be in good agreemen…
The effects of Ir doping on the thermoelectric properties of Pt1-xIrxSb2 (x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, and 0.1) with pyrite structure were studied. Measurements of electrical resistivity rho, Seebeck coefficient S, and thermal conductivity kappa were conducted. The results showed an abrupt change from semiconducting behavior without Ir (x = 0) to metallic behavior at x = 0.01. The sample with x = 0.01 exhibited large S and low rho, resulting in a maximum power factor (S^2/rho) of 43 muW/cmK^2 at 400 K. The peculiar "pudding mold"-type electronic band dispersion could explain the enhanced thermoelectric …
We report 45% enhancement in the thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT of Sr3SnO via Ca substitution. First-principles calculations have been performed to study the electronic and thermoelectric transport properties of Ca substituted Sr3SnO (Sr3-xCaxSnO). The effects of Ca subtitution on bandgap are studied and detailed mechanisms are proposed to explain the obtained results. We have found that effective mass and thermopower of Sr3SnO redueces with the increase of hole concentration. The optimum hole concentration has been obtained for Sr2CaSnO and the corresponding Seebeck coefficient is 219 μV/…
We study the organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) performance of the ladder polymer, poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL) in an attempt to better understand how an apparently hydrophobic side-chain-free polymer is able to operate as an OECT with favorable redox kinetics in an aqueous environment. We examine two BBLs of different molecular masses from different sources. Both BBLs show significant film swelling during the initial reduction step. By combining electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (eQCM) gravimetry, in-operando atomic force microscopy (AFM), and both ex-situ and…
Thermoelectric materials enables the harvest of waste heat and directly conversion into electricity. In search of high efficient thermoelectric materials, low thermal conductivity of a material is essential and critical. Here, we have theoretically investigated the lattice thermal conductivity and thermoelectric properties of layered intermetallic Na$_2$MgSn and Na$_2$MgPb based on the density functional theory and linearized Boltzmann equation with the single-mode relaxation-time approximation. It is found that both materials exhibit very low and anisotropic intrinsic lattice thermal conducti…
