Observations of high-redshift quasars provide information on the massive black holes (MBHs) powering them and the galaxies hosting them. Current observations of $z \gtrsim 6$ hosts, at sub-mm wavelengths, trace the properties of cold gas, and these are used to compare with the correlations between MBHs and galaxies characterising the $z=0$ population. The relations at $z=0$, however, rely on stellar-based tracers of the galaxy properties. We perform a very-high resolution cosmological zoom-in simulation of a $z=7$ quasar including state-of-the-art non-equilibrium chemistry, MBH formation, growth and feedback, to assess the evolution of the galaxy host and the central MBH, and compare the results with recent ALMA observations of high-redshift quasars. We measure both the stellar-based quantities used to establish the $z=0$ correlations, as well as the gas-based quantities available in $z \gtrsim 6$ observations, adopting the same assumptions and techniques used in observational studies. The high-redshift studies argued that MBHs at high redshift deviate from the local MBH-galaxy correlations. In our analysis of the single galaxy we evolve, we find that the high-redshift population sits on the same correlations as the local one, when using the same tracers used at $z=0$. When using the gas-based tracers, however, MBHs appear to be over-massive. The discrepancy between local and high-redshift MBHs seems caused by the different tracers employed, and necessary assumptions, and not by an intrinsic difference. Better calibration of the tracers, higher resolution data and availability of facilities that can probe the stellar population will be crucial to assess precisely and accurately high-redshift quasar hosts.
We study the dependence of the number density and properties of quasars on the background galaxy density using the currently largest spectroscopic datasets of quasars and galaxies. We construct a galaxy number density field smoothed over the variable smoothing scale of between approximately 10 and $20\,h^{-1}$Mpc over the redshift range of $0.46<z<0.59$ using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 12 (DR12) Constant MASS (CMASS) galaxies. The quasar sample is prepared from the SDSS I/II DR7. We examine the correlation of incidence of quasars with the large-scale background density an…
Quasars, as the most luminous persistent sources in the Universe, have broad applications for cosmological studies. In particular, they can be employed to directly measure the expansion history of the Universe, similarly to SNe Ia. The advantage of quasars is that they are numerous, cover a broad range of redshifts, up to $z = 7$, and do not show significant evolution of metallicity with redshift. The idea is based on the relation between the time delay of an emission line and the continuum, and the absolute monochromatic luminosity of a quasar. For intermediate redshift quasars, the suitable …
Context: We present COSTA (COld STream finder Algorithm), a novel algorithm to search for cold kinematical substructures in the phase space of planetary nebulae (PNe) and globular clusters (GCs) in the halo of massive galaxies and intracluster regions. Aims: COSTA aims at detecting small sized, low velocity dispersion streams, as the ones produced in recent interactions of dwarf galaxies with the halo of more massive galaxies, including the ones sitting in the central region of rich galaxy clusters. Methods: COSTA is based on a deep friend-of-friend procedure that isolates groups of N particle…
We report on the discovery of a rare case of spatially and kinematically resolved galactic scale outflow at intermediate redshift, based on VLT/MUSE optical integral field spectroscopic observation of the quasar HE 0238$-$1904. This classical non-broad absorption line (non-BAL) quasar at $z=0.631$ remains underexplored in its optical emission lines, though its UV absorption lines are well-studied. We identify a superbubble driven by HE 0238$-$1904 from the emission line morphology, line ratio diagnostics and kinematics, showing a one-sided outflow reaching a projected distance of $R \sim 55$ k…
In the near future, new surveys promise a significant increase in the number of quasars (QSO) at large redshifts. This will help to constrain the dark energy models using quasars. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will cover over 10 million QSO in six photometric bands during its 10-year run. QSO will be monitored and subsequently analyzed using the photometric reverberation mapping (RM) technique. In low-redshift quasars, the combination of reverberation-mapped and spectroscopic results have provided important progress. However, there are still some facts which have to be taken into …

The Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) scale in the clustering of galaxies is a powerful standard ruler to measure cosmological distances and determine the geometry of the Universe. Past surveys have detected the BAO feature in the clustering of different galaxy samples, most of them composed of redder, quiescent galaxies and bluer, star-forming ones out to redshift $z\sim1$. Besides these targets, new upcoming surveys will observe high-redshift galaxies with bright nebular emission lines out to $z\sim2$, quasars and Lyman-$α$ quasars at $z\gt 2$. All these different galaxy targets will be used…
We have searched the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12 for ghostly Damped Ly$α$ (DLA) systems. These systems, located at the redshift of the quasars, show strong absorption from low-ionization atomic species but reveal no HI Ly$α$ absorption. Our search has, for the first time, resulted in a sample of 30 homogeneously selected ghostly DLAs with $z_{\rm QSO}$$>$2.0. Thirteen of the ghostly DLAs exhibit absorption from other HI Lyman series lines. The lack of Ly$α$ absorption in these absorbers is consistent with them being dense and compact with projected sizes smaller than the broad lin…

We study the dependence of quasar clustering on quasar luminosity and black hole mass by measuring the angular overdensity of photometrically selected galaxies imaged by WISE about z $\sim$ 0.8 quasars from SDSS. By measuring the quasar-galaxy cross-correlation function and using photometrically selected galaxies, we achieve a higher density of tracer objects and a more sensitive detection of clustering than measurements of the quasar autocorrelation function. We test models of quasar formation and evolution by measuring the luminosity dependence of clustering amplitude. We find a significant …
The chemo-dynamics of galaxy halos beyond the Local Group may now be mapped out through the use of globular clusters and planetary nebulae as bright tracer objects, along with deep multi-slit spectroscopy of the integrated stellar light. We present results from surveying nearby early-type galaxies, including evidence for kinematically distinct halos that may reflect two-phase galaxy assembly. We also demonstrate the utility of the tracer approach in measuring the kinematics of stellar substructures around the Umbrella Galaxy, which allow us to reconstruct the progenitor properties and stream o…
We investigate the metallicity of the broad line region (BLR) of a sample of 30 quasars in the redshift range 4<z<6.4, by using near-IR and optical spectra. We focus on the ratio of the broad lines (SiIV1397+OIV]1402)/CIV1549, which is a good metallicity tracer of the BLR. We find that the metallicity of the BLR is very high even in QSOs at z~6. The inferred metallicity of the BLR gas is so high (several times solar) that metal ejection or mixing with lower metallicity gas in the host galaxy is required to match the metallicities observed in local massive galaxies. On average, the observed met…
High-redshift quasars are currently the only probes of the growth of supermassive black holes and potential tracers of structure evolution at early cosmic time. Here we present our candidate selection criteria from the Panoramic Survey Telescope & Rapid Response System 1 and follow-up strategy to discover quasars in the redshift range 5.7<z<6.2. With this strategy we discovered eight new 5.7<z<6.0 quasars, increasing the number of known quasars at z>5.7 by more than 10%. We additionally recovered 18 previously known quasars. The eight quasars presented here span a large range of luminosities (…
A family of spherical halo models with flat circular velocity curves is presented. This includes models in which the rotation curve has a finite central value but declines outwards (like the Jaffe model). It includes models in which the rotation curve is rising in the inner parts, but flattens asymptotically (like the Binney model). The family encompasses models with both finite and singular (cuspy) density profiles. The self-consistent distribution function depending on binding energy $E$ and angular momentum $L$ is derived and the kinematical properties of the models discussed. These really …
Although the radio emission from most quasars appears to be associated with star forming activity in the host galaxy, about ten percent of optically selected quasars have very luminous relativistic jets apparently powered by a SMBH which is located at the base of the jet. When these jets are pointed close to the line of sight their apparent luminosity is enhanced by Doppler boosting and appears highly variable. High resolution radio interferometry shows directly the outflow of relativistic plasma jets from the SMBH. Apparent transverse velocities in these so called blazars are typically about …
Observations of $z \gtrsim 6$ quasars provide information on the early phases of the most massive black holes (MBHs) and galaxies. Current observations at sub-mm wavelengths trace cold and warm gas, and future observations will extend information to other gas phases and the stellar properties. The goal of this study is to examine the gas life cycle in a $z \gtrsim 6$ quasar: from accretion from the halo to the galaxy and all the way into the MBH, to how star formation and the MBH itself affect the gas properties. Using a very-high resolution cosmological zoom-in simulation of a $z=7$ quasar in…
We present X-ray and multiwavelength analyses of 32 weak emission-line quasars (WLQs) selected in a consistent and unbiased manner. New $Chandra$ 3.1-4.8 ks observations were obtained for 14 of these WLQs with C IV rest-frame equivalent widths (REWs) of 5-15 Å, and these serve as an X-ray observational "bridge" between previously studied WLQs with C IV REW $\lesssim$ 5 Å and more-typical quasars with C IV REW $\approx$ 15-100 Å. We have identified and quantified a strong dependence of the fraction of X-ray weak quasars upon C IV REW; this fraction declines by a factor of $\approx 13$ (from $\a…
There is growing observational evidence of high-redshift quasars launching energetic, fast outflows, but the effects that these have on their host galaxies is poorly understood. We employ the moving-mesh code AREPO to study the feedback from a quasar that has grown to $\sim 10^9 M_\odot$ by $z \sim 5$ and the impact that this has on its host galaxy. Our simulations use a super-Lagrangian refinement technique to increase the accuracy with which the interface of the quasar-driven wind and the surrounding gas is resolved. We find that the feedback injected in these simulations is less efficient a…

We present the first luminous, spatially resolved binary quasar that clearly inhabits an ongoing galaxy merger. SDSS J125455.09+084653.9 and SDSS J125454.87+084652.1 (SDSS J1254+0846 hereafter) are two luminous z=0.44 radio quiet quasars, with a radial velocity difference of just 215 km/s, separated on the sky by 21 kpc in a disturbed host galaxy merger showing obvious tidal tails. The pair was targeted as part of a complete sample of binary quasar candidates with small transverse separations drawn from SDSS DR6 photometry. We present follow-up optical imaging which shows broad, symmetrical ti…
We report the discovery of six spatially extended (10-100 kpc) line-emitting nebulae in the z=0.57 galaxy group hosting PKS0405-123, one of the most luminous quasars at z<1. The discovery is enabled by the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) and provides tantalizing evidence connecting large-scale gas streams with nuclear activity on scales of <10 proper kpc (pkpc). One of the nebulae exhibits a narrow, filamentary morphology extending over 50 pkpc toward the quasar with narrow internal velocity dispersion (50 km/s) and is not associated with any detected galaxies, consistent with a cool …
We use 666 blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars from the 2Qz redshift survey to map the Galactic halo in four dimensions (position, distance and velocity). We find that the halo extends to at least 100 kpc in Galactocentric distance, and obeys a single power-law density profile of index ~-2.5 in two different directions separated by 150 degrees on the sky. This suggests that the halo is spherical. Our map shows no large kinematically coherent structures (streams, clouds or plumes) and appears homogeneous. However, we find that at least 20% of the stars in the halo reside in substructures and tha…

High-redshift quasars are important tracers of structure and evolution in the early universe. However, they are very rare and difficult to find when using color selection because of contamination from late-type dwarfs. High-redshift quasar surveys based on only optical colors suffer from incompleteness and low identification efficiency, especially at $z\gtrsim4.5$. We have developed a new method to select $4.7\lesssim z \lesssim 5.4$ quasars with both high efficiency and completeness by combining optical and mid-IR Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) photometric data, and are conducting…
Distant quasars are unique tracers to study the formation of the earliest supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the history of cosmic reionization. Despite extensive efforts, only two quasars have been found at $z\ge7.5$, due to a combination of their low spatial density and the high contamination rate in quasar selection. We report the discovery of a luminous quasar at $z=7.642$, J0313$-$1806, the most distant quasar yet known. This quasar has a bolometric luminosity of $3.6\times10^{13} L_\odot$. Deep spectroscopic observations reveal a SMBH with a mass of $(1.6\pm0.4) \times10^9M_\odot$ in t…
Quasar feedback in the form of powerful outflows is invoked as a key mechanism to quench star formation in galaxies, preventing massive galaxies to over-grow and producing the red colors of ellipticals. On the other hand, some models are also requiring `positive' AGN feedback, inducing star formation in the host galaxy through enhanced gas pressure in the interstellar medium. However, finding observational evidence of the effects of both types of feedback is still one of the main challenges of extragalactic astronomy, as few observations of energetic and extended radiatively-driven winds are a…
Powerful quasars can be seen out to large distances. As they reside in massive dark matter haloes, they provide a useful tracer of large scale structure. We stack Herschel-SPIRE images at 250, 350 and 500 microns at the location of 11,235 quasars in ten redshift bins spanning $0.5 \leq z \leq 3.5$. The unresolved dust emission of the quasar and its host galaxy dominate on instrumental beam scales, while extended emission is spatially resolved on physical scales of order a megaparsec. This emission is due to dusty star-forming galaxies clustered around the dark matter haloes hosting quasars. We…
We present 13 new 2175 Å dust absorbers at z_abs = 1.0 - 2.2 towards background quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These absorbers are examined in detail using data from the Echelle Spectrograph and Imager (ESI) on the Keck II telescope. Many low-ionization lines including Fe II, Zn II, Mg II, Si II, Al II, Ni II, Mn II, Cr II, Ti II, and Ca II are present in the same absorber which gives rise to the 2175 Å bump. The relative metal abundances (with respect to Zn) demonstrate that the depletion patterns of our 2175 Å dust absorbers resemble that of the Milky Way clouds although some are…
Since the discovery of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their subclasses, a unification scheme of AGN has been long sought. Orientation-based unified models predict that some of the diversity within AGN subclasses can be explained by the different viewing angles of the observer. Several orientation categorisations have been suggested, but a widely applicable measure has yet to be found. Using the properties of the ultraviolet and optical broad emission lines of quasars, in particular the velocity offsets and line widths of high-ionisation CIV and low-ionisation MgII lines, a correlation has be…
We examine the properties of the host galaxies of $z=7$ quasars using the large volume, cosmological hydrodynamical simulation BlueTides. We find that the 10 most massive black holes and the 191 quasars in the simulation (with $M_{\textrm{UV,AGN}}<M_{\textrm{UV,host}}$) are hosted by massive galaxies with stellar masses $\log(M_\ast/M_\odot)=10.8\pm0.2$, and $10.2\pm0.4$, which have large star formation rates, of $513\substack{+1225 \\ -351}M_\odot/\rm{yr}$ and $191\substack{+288 \\ -120}M_\odot/\rm{yr}$, respectively. The hosts of the most massive black holes and quasars in BlueTides are gene…
The flux ratios of high-ionization lines are commonly assumed to indicate the metallicity of the broad emission line region in luminous quasars. When accounting for the variation in their kinematic profiles, we show that the NV/CIV, (SiIV+OIV])/CIV and NV/Lya line ratios do not vary as a function of the quasar continuum luminosity, black hole mass, or accretion rate. Using photoionization models from CLOUDY , we further show that the observed changes in these line ratios can be explained by emission from gas with solar abundances, if the physical conditions of the emitting gas are allowed to v…
We present a study of the kinematical properties of a small sample of nearby near-infrared bright massive and intermediate mass young stellar objects using emission lines sensitive to discs and winds. We show for the first time that the broad ($\sim500$kms$^{-1}$) symmetric line wings on the HI Brackett series lines are due to Stark broadening or electron scattering, rather than pure Doppler broadening due to high speed motion. The results are consistent with the presence of a very dense circumstellar environment. In addition, many of these lines show evidence for weak line self-absorption, su…
This work aims at studying the $M_{BH}-M_{dyn}$ relation of a sample of $2<z<7$ quasars by constraining their host galaxy masses through full kinematical modeling of the cold gas kinematics, thus avoiding all possible biases and effects introduced by the rough virial estimates usually adopted so far. For this purpose we retrieved public observations of $72$ quasar host galaxies observed in ${\rm [CII]_{158μm}}$ or ${\rm CO}$ transitions with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). We then selected those quasars whose line emission is spatially resolved and performed a kinematic analysis on …
\emph{Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer} all-sky survey has discovered a new population of hot dust-obscured galaxies (Hot DOGs), which has been confirmed to be dusty quasars. Previous statistical studies have found significant overdensities of sub-millimeter and mid-IR selected galaxies around Hot DOGs, indicating they may reside in dense regions. Here we present the near-infrared ($J$ and $K_s$ bands) observations over a $7.5'\times 7.5'$ field centered on a Hot DOG W1835$+$4355 at $z \sim 2.3$ using the wide-field infrared camera on the Palomar 200-inch telescope. We use the color criteri…
Obscuration of quasars by accreted gas and dust, or dusty intervening galaxies, can cause active galactic nuclei (AGN) to be missed in optically-selected surveys. Radio observations can overcome this dust bias. In particular, radio surveys searching for HI absorption inform us on how the AGN can impact on the cold neutral gas medium within the host galaxy, or the population of intervening galaxies through the observed line of sight gas kinematics. We present the results of a HI absorption line survey at $0.4 < z < 1$ towards 34 obscured quasars with the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) commis…
At redshifts beyond $z{\sim}1$ measuring the black hole galaxy relations proves to be a difficult task. The bright light of the AGN aggravates deconvolution of black hole and galaxy properties. On the other hand high redshift data on these relations is vital to understand in what ways galaxies and black holes co-evolve and in what ways they don't. In this work we use black hole (BHMDs) and stellar mass densities (SMDs) to constrain the possible co-evolution of black holes with their host galaxies since $z{\sim}5$. The BHMDs are calculated from quasar luminosity functions (QLF) using the Soltan…
Line profile distortions are commonly observed in gravitationally lensed quasar spectra. These distortions are caused by microlensing from the stars in the lensing galaxy, which produce differential magnification of spatially and kinematically separated parts of the broad line region (BLR). The quasi-simultaneous visible and near-infrared spectroscopy of the lensed quasar Q2237+0305 reveals strong microlensing-induced line deformations in the high-ionization CIV $λ$ 1549 Åand the low-ionization H$α$ emission lines. We use this effect to constrain the BLR size, geometry, and kinematics in Q2237…
We have identified ionized outflows in the narrow line region of all but one SDSS type 2 quasars (QSO2) at z<~0.1 (20/21, detection rate 95%), implying that this is a ubiquitous phenomenon in this object class also at the lowest z. The outflowing gas has high densities (n_e>1000 cm-3) and covers a region the size of a few kpc. This implies ionized outflow masses M~(0.3-2.4)x1e6 Msun and mass outflow rates M(dot)<few Msun yr-1. The triggering mechanism of the outflows is related to the nuclear activity. The QSO2 can be classified in two groups according to the behavior and properties of the out…
We present the cold neutral content (H I and C I gas) of 13 quasar 2175 Å$ $ dust absorbers (2DAs) at $z$ = 1.6 - 2.5 to investigate the correlation between the presence of the UV extinction bump with other physical characteristics. These 2DAs were initially selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys I - III and followed up with the Keck-II telescope and the Multiple Mirror Telescope as detailed in our Paper I. We perform a correlation analysis between metallicity, redshift, depletion level, velocity width, and explore relationships between 2DAs and other absorption line systems. The 2DAs on …
Every star-forming galaxy has a halo of metal-enriched gas extending out to at least 100 kpc, as revealed by the absorption lines this gas imprints on the spectra of background quasars. However, quasars are sparse and typically probe only one narrow pencil beam through the intervening galaxy. Close quasar pairs and gravitationally lensed quasars have been used to circumvent this inherently one-dimensional technique, but these objects are rare and the structure of the circum-galactic medium remains poorly constrained. As a result, our understanding of the physical processes that drive the re-cy…
The circumgalactic medium (CGM) traced by OVI $λλ1031, 1037$ doublet absorption has been found to concentrate along the projected major and minor axes of the host galaxies. This suggests that OVI traces accreting and outflowing gas, respectively, which are key components of the baryon cycle of galaxies. We investigate this further by examining the kinematics of 29 OVI absorbers associated with galaxies at $0.13 < z_{\rm gal} < 0.66$ as a function of galaxy color, inclination, and azimuthal angle. Each galaxy was imaged with HST and the absorption was detected in COS/HST spectra of nearby ($D<2…

The properties of globular cluster systems (GCSs) in the core of the nearby galaxy clusters Fornax and Hydra I are presented. In the Fornax cluster we have gathered the largest radial velocity sample of a GCS system so far, which enables us to identify photometric and kinematic sub-populations around the central galaxy NGC 1399. Moreover, ages, metallicities and [alpha/Fe] abundances of a sub-sample of 60 bright globular clusters (GCs) with high S/N spectroscopy show a multi-modal distribution in the correlation space of these three parameters, confirming heterogeneous stellar populations in t…
Deriving the Faraday rotation measure (RM) of quasar absorption line systems, which are tracers of high-redshift galaxies intervening background quasars, is a powerful tool for probing magnetic fields in distant galaxies. Statistically comparing the RM distributions of two quasar samples, with and without absorption line systems, allows one to infer magnetic field properties of the intervening galaxy population. Here, we have derived the analytical form of the probability distribution function (PDF) of RM produced by a single galaxy with an axisymmetric large-scale magnetic field. We then furt…
