This work aims at studying the $M_{BH}-M_{dyn}$ relation of a sample of $2<z<7$ quasars by constraining their host galaxy masses through full kinematical modeling of the cold gas kinematics, thus avoiding all possible biases and effects introduced by the rough virial estimates usually adopted so far. For this purpose we retrieved public observations of $72$ quasar host galaxies observed in ${\rm [CII]_{158μm}}$ or ${\rm CO}$ transitions with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). We then selected those quasars whose line emission is spatially resolved and performed a kinematic analysis on ALMA observations. We estimated the dynamical mass of the systems by modeling the gas kinematics with a rotating disc taking into account geometrical and instrumental effects. Our dynamical mass estimates, combined with $M_{BH}$ obtained from literature and our own new ${\rm CIV}\lambda1550$ observations, have allowed us to investigate the $ M_{BH}/M_{dyn}$ in the early Universe. Overall we obtained a sample of $10$ quasars at $z\sim2-7$ in which line emission is detected with high S/N ($> 5-10$) and the gas kinematics is spatially resolved and dominated by ordered rotation. The estimated dynamical masses place $6$ out of $10$ quasars above the local relation yielding to a $M_{BH}/M_{dyn}$ ratios $\sim10\times$ higher than those estimated in low-$z$ galaxies. On the other hand, we found that $4$ quasars at $z\sim 4-6$ have dynamical-to-BH mass ratios consistent with what is observed in early-type galaxies in the local Universe.
Emission line observations of circumnuclear gas disks in the ALMA era have begun to resolve molecular gas tracer kinematics near supermassive black holes (BHs), enabling highly precise mass determination in the best cases. The ngVLA is capable of extremely high spatial resolution imaging of the CO(1-0) transition at 115 GHz for nearby galaxies. Furthermore, its high (anticipated) emission line sensitivity suggests this array can produce benchmark BH mass measurements. We discuss lessons learned from gas-dynamical modeling of recent ALMA data sets and also compare ALMA and ngVLA CO simulations …
We present 0\farcs{14}-resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) CO(2$-$1) observations of the circumnuclear gas disk in UGC 2698, a local compact galaxy. The disk exhibits regular rotation with projected velocities rising to 450 km s$^{-1}$ near the galaxy center. We fit gas-dynamical models to the ALMA data cube, assuming the CO emission originates from a dynamically cold, thin disk, and measured the mass of the supermassive black hole (BH) in UGC 2698 to be $M_{\mathrm{BH}} = (2.46 \pm{0.07}$ [$1σ$ stat] $^{+0.70}_{-0.78}$ [sys])$\times 10^9$ $M_\odot$. UGC 2698 is part…
Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) can be a promising tracer of cosmic star-formation rate history (CSFRH). In order to reveal the CSFRH using GRBs, it is important to understand whether they are biased tracers or not. For this purpose, it is crucial to understand properties of GRB host galaxies, in comparison to field galaxies. In this work, we report ALMA far-infrared (FIR) observations of six $z\sim2$ IR-bright GRB host galaxies, which are selected for the brightness in IR. Among them, four host galaxies are detected for the first time in the rest-frame FIR. In addition to the ALMA data, we collected …
In the last decades several correlations between the mass of the central supermassive black hole (BH) and properties of the host galaxy - such as bulge luminosity and mass, central stellar velocity dispersion, Sérsic index, spiral pitch angle etc. - have been found and point at a coevolution scenario of BH and host galaxy. In this article, I review some of these relations for inactive galaxies and discuss the findings for galaxies that host an active galactic nucleus/quasar. I present the results of our group that finds that active galaxies at $z\lesssim 0.1$ do not follow the BH mass - bulge …
WISDOM Project -- XXV. Improving the CO-dynamical supermassive black hole mass measurement in the galaxy NGC 1574 using high spatial resolution ALMA observations
We present new ALMA band-7 data for a sample of six luminous quasars at z~4.8, powered by fast-growing supermassive black holes (SMBHs) with rather uniform properties: the typical accretion rates and black hole masses are L/L_Edd~0.7 and M_BH~10^9 M_sol. Our sample consists of three "FIR-bright" sources, which were individually detected in previous Herschel/SPIRE observations, with star formation rates of SFR>1000 M_sol/yr, and three "FIR-faint" sources for which Herschel stacking analysis implies a typical SFR of ~400 M_sol/yr. The dusty interstellar medium in the hosts of all six quasars is …
We present 0".035 resolution (~200 pc) imaging of the 158 um [CII] line and the underlying dust continuum of the z=6.9 quasar J234833.34-305410.0. The 18 h ALMA observations reveal extremely compact emission (diameter ~1 kpc) that is consistent with a simple, almost face-on, rotation-supported disk with a significant velocity dispersion of ~160 km/s. The gas mass in just the central 200 pc is ~4x10^9 M_sun, about a factor two higher than that of the central supermassive black hole. Consequently we do not resolve the black hole's sphere of influence, and find no kinematic signature of the centr…
We present rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) and optical observations of the host galaxy of GRB090423 at z=8.23 from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and the Spitzer Space Telescope, respectively. The host remains undetected to 3-sigma limits of Fnu(222 GHz)<33 microJy and Fnu(3.6 micron)<81 nJy. The FIR limit is about 20 times fainter than the luminosity of the local ULIRG Arp220, and comparable to the local starburst M82. Comparing to model spectral energy distributions we place a limit on the IR luminosity of L_IR(8-1000 micron)<3e10 Lsun, corresponding to a limit on the obscured star …
We report the multi-wavelength properties of millimeter galaxies hosting X-ray detected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS). ALCS is an extensive survey of well-studied lensing clusters with ALMA, covering an area of 133 arcmin$^2$ over 33 clusters with a 1.2 mm flux-density limit of ${\sim}$60 $\mathrm{μJy}$ ($1σ$). Utilizing the archival data of Chandra, we identify three AGNs at $z=$1.06, 2.09, and 2.84 among the 180 millimeter sources securely detected in the ALCS (of which 155 are inside the coverage of Chandra). The X-ray spectral analysis shows that…
As part of the mm-Wave Interferometric Survey of Dark Object Masses (WISDOM) project, we present an estimate of the mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in the nearby fast-rotating early-type galaxy NGC4697. This estimate is based on Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) cycle-3 observations of the 12CO(2-1) emission line with a linear resolution of 29 pc (0.53"). We find that NGC4697 hosts a small relaxed central molecular gas disc with a mass of 1.6x10^7 Msun, co-spatial with the obscuring dust disc visible in optical Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging. We also resolve …
We study the correlations between Supermassive Black Holes (BH) and their host galaxies, using a sample of 83 BH masses collected from the most recent and reliable spatially resolved estimates available from the literature. We confirm the mono- and bivariate correlations between SMBHs and the bulges of their host galaxies, confirming that the correlation with the effective velocity dispersion is not significantly improved by higher dimensionality. Instead, pseudobulges do not seem to correlate with their SMBHs, probably because their secular evolution is often unable to trigger accretion onto …
Event rate of long Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) is expected to be an useful tracer of the cosmic star-formation history. For this purpose, it is necessary to understand what kind of star formations/galaxies are traced by GRBs. Here we report rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) continuum detections of GRB 070521 and 080207 host galaxies at $z\sim2$ with ALMA band 8 and 9. The FIR photometries provide the reliable star-formation rates (SFRs), because FIR emission is free from dust extinction and possible radio contamination from long-lived afterglows of GRBs. The spectral energy distribution fittings indic…
We present high resolution (0.3") Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) 870um imaging of five z~1.5-4.5 X-ray detected AGN with luminosities of L(2-8keV)>10^42 erg/s. These data provide a >~20x improvement in spatial resolution over single-dish rest-frame FIR measurements. The sub-millimetre emission is extended on scales of FWHM~0.2"-0.5", corresponding to physical sizes of 1-3 kpc (median value of 1.8 kpc). These sizes are comparable to the majority of z=1-5 sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs) with equivalent ALMA measurements. In combination with spectral energy distribution analyses, we attribu…

This paper reports a re-analysis of archival ALMA data of the high velocity (-width) compact cloud (HVCC) CO-0.40-0.22, which has recently been hypothesized to host an intermediate-mass black Hole (IMBH). If beam-smearing effects, difference in beam sizes among frequency bands, and Doppler shift due to the motion of the Earth are considered accurately, none of the features reported as evidence for an IMBH in previous studies are confirmed in the re-analyzed ALMA images. Instead, through analysis of the position--velocity structure of the HCN J=3-2 data cube, we have found kinematics typical of…
We investigated the radio properties of the host galaxy of X-ray flash, XRF020903, which is the best example for investigating of the off-axis origin of gamma-ray bursts(GRBs). Dust continuum at 233 GHz and CO are observed using the Atacama Large millimeter/submillimeter array. The molecular gas mass derived by applying the metalicity-dependent CO-to-H$_{2}$ conversion factor matches the global trend along the redshift and stellar mass of the GRB host galaxies. The estimated gas depletion timescale (pertaining to the potential critical characteristics of GRB host galaxies) is equivalent to tho…
We report ALMA observations of the dust continuum and {\cii} emission of the host galaxy of J0439+1634, a gravitationally lensed quasar at $z=6.5$. Gravitational lensing boosts the source-plane resolution to $\sim0\farcs15$ $(\sim0.8\text{ kpc})$. The lensing model derived from the ALMA data is consistent with the fiducial model in \citet{fan19} based on {\it HST} imaging. The host galaxy of J0439+1634 can be well-fitted by a Sérsic profile consistent with an exponential disk, both in the far-infrared (FIR) continuum and the {\cii} emission. The overall magnification is $4.53\pm0.05$ for the c…
We present ALMA band-7 data of the [CII] $\lambda157.74\,μ{\rm m}$ emission line and underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum for twelve luminous quasars at $z \simeq 4.8$, powered by fast-growing supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Our total sample consists of eighteen quasars, twelve of which are presented here for the first time. The new sources consists of six Herschel/SPIRE detected systems, which we define as "FIR-bright" sources, and six Herschel/SPIRE undetected systems, which we define as "FIR-faint" sources. We determine dust masses for the quasars hosts of $M_{dust} \le 0.2-25.0\times …
The oral version of this paper summarized Kormendy & Ho 2013, ARA&A, 51, 511. However, earlier speakers at this Symposium worried that selection effects bias the derivation of black hole scaling relations. I therefore added -- and this proceedings paper emphasizes -- a discussion of why we can be confident that selection effects do not bias the observed correlations between BH mass M_BH and the luminosity, stellar mass, and velocity dispersion of host ellipticals and classical bulges. These are the only galaxy components that show tight BH-host correlations. The scatter plots of M_BH with host…
We present a multi-line survey of the interstellar medium (ISM) in two $z>6$ quasar (QSO) host galaxies, PJ231-20 ($z=6.59$) and PJ308-21 ($z=6.23$), and their two companion galaxies. Observations were carried out using the Atacama Large (sub-)Millimeter Array (ALMA). We targeted eleven transitions including atomic fine structure lines (FSLs) and molecular lines: [NII]$_{\rm 205μm}$, [CI]$_{\rm 369μm}$, CO ($J_{\rm up} = 7, 10, 15, 16$), H$_2$O $3_{12}-2_{21}$, $3_{21}-3_{12}$, $3_{03}-2_{12}$, and the OH$_{\rm 163μm}$ doublet. The underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum samples the Rayleigh-J…
We investigate the correlation between the mass of a central supermassive black hole and the total gravitational mass of the host galaxy (M_tot). The results are based on 43 galaxy-scale strong gravitational lenses from the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) Survey whose black hole masses were estimated through two scaling relations: the relation between black hole mass and Sersic index (M_bh - n) and the relation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion (M_bh - sigma). We use the enclosed mass within R_200, the radius within which the density profile of the early type galaxy exceeds the cr…
We present ALMA observations at 107.291 GHz (band 3) and 214.532 GHz (band 6) of GMASS 0953, a star-forming galaxy at z=2.226 hosting an obscured AGN that has been proposed as a progenitor of compact quiescent galaxies (QG). We measure for the first time the size of the dust and molecular gas emission of GMASS 0953 that we find to be extremely compact ($\sim$1 kpc). This result, coupled with a very high ISM density (n$\sim$10$^{5.5}$ cm$^{-3}$), a low gas mass fraction ($\sim$0.2) and a short gas depletion timescale ($\sim$150 Myr) imply that GMASS 0953 is experiencing an episode of intense st…
The coevolution between supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and their host galaxies has been proposed for more than a decade, albeit with little direct evidence about black hole accretion activities regulating galaxy star formation at $z>1$. In this paper, we study the lifetimes of X-ray active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in $UV$-selected red sequence (RS), blue cloud (BC) and green valley (GV) galaxies, finding that AGN accretion activities are most prominent in GV galaxies at $z\sim1.5-2$, compared with RS and BC galaxies. We also compare AGN accretion timescales with typical color transition timesc…
We report a detailed modeling of a mass profile of a $z = 0.2999$ massive elliptical galaxy using 30 milli-arcsecond resolution 1-mm Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) images of the galaxy-galaxy lensing system SDP.81. The detailed morphology of the lensed multiple images of the $z = 3.042$ infrared-luminous galaxy, which is found to consist of tens of $\lesssim 100$-pc-sized star-forming clumps embedded in a $\sim 2$ kpc disk, are well reproduced by a lensing galaxy modeled by an isothermal ellipsoid with a 400 pc core. The core radius is consistent with that of the visible s…
We present rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) and optical size measurements of AGN hosts and star-forming galaxies in the COSMOS field, enabled by high-resolution ALMA/1 mm (0.1 arcsec - 0.4 arcsec) and HST/F814W imaging (~ 0.1 arcsec). Our sample includes 27 galaxies at z<2.5, classified as infrared-selected AGN (3 sources), X-ray selected AGN (4 sources), and non-AGN star-forming galaxies (20 sources), for which high-resolution Band 6/7 ALMA images are available at 1 mm from our own observing program as well as archival observations. The sizes and SFR surface densities measured from both ALMA/1 m…
The realization of fundamental relations between supermassive black holes and their host galaxies would have profound implications in astrophysics. To add further context to studies of their co-evolution, an investigation is carried out to gain insight as to whether quasars and their hosts at earlier epochs follow the local relation between black hole (BH) mass and stellar velocity dispersion. We use 584 SDSS quasars at 0.2 < z < 0.8 with black hole measurements, and properties of their hosts from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program. An inference of the stellar velocity dispersion i…
We present ALMA observations of the [CII] 158 $μ$m fine structure line and dust continuum emission from two quasars, SDSS J104433.04-012502.2 and SDSS J012958.51-003539.7, at z=5.78. The ALMA observations at 0.2'' resolution map the dust and gas on kpc scales. The spatially resolved emission shows a similar trend of decreasing [CII]-FIR ratios with increasing FIR surface brightnesses as was found in the infrared luminous galaxies with intense star formation. We confirm the velocity gradients of [CII] emission found previously in SDSS J0129-0035. No clear evidence of order motion is detected in…
We present the results of CO observations toward 14 host galaxies of long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) at z = 0.1-2.5 by using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. We successfully detected CO(3-2) or CO(4-3) emission in eight hosts (z = 0.3-2), which more than doubles the sample size of GRB hosts with CO detection. The derived molecular gas mass is $M_{\rm gas} = (0.2-6) \times 10^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$ assuming metallicity-dependent CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factors. By using the largest sample of GRB hosts with molecular gas estimates (25 in total, of which 14 are CO-detected) inclu…
With projects such as Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and Pulsar Timing Arrays expected to detect gravitational waves from supermassive black hole mergers in the near future, it is key that we understand what we expect those detections to be, and maximize what we can learn from them. To address this, we study the mergers of supermassive black holes in the Illustris simulation, the overall rate of mergers, and the correlation between merging black holes and their host galaxies. We find that these mergers occur in typical galaxies along the $M_{\rm{BH}}-M_*$ relation, and that between …
We present ALMA observations of the CO(1-0) line and 3-mm continuum emission in eight ultraluminous infrared (IR) quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) at z = 0.06-0.19. All eight IR QSO hosts are clearly resolved in their CO molecular gas emission with a median source size of 3.2 kpc, and seven out of eight sources are detected in 3-mm continuum, which is found to be more centrally concentrated with respect to molecular gas with sizes of 0.4-1.0 kpc. Our observations reveal a diversity of CO morphology and kinematics for the IR QSO systems which can be roughly classified into three categories, rotatin…
Almost all galaxies along the Hubble sequence host a compact massive object (CMO) in their center. The CMO can be either a supermassive black hole (SMBH) or a very dense stellar cluster, also known as nuclear star cluster (NSC). Generally, heavier galaxies (mass $\gtrsim 10^{11}\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ ) host a central SMBH while lighter show a central NSC. Intermediate mass hosts, instead, contain both a NSC and a SMBH. One possible formation mechanisms of a NSC relies on the dry-merger (migratory) scenario, in which globular clusters (GCs) decay toward the center of the host galaxy and merge. In …
One of the main challenges in using high redshift active galactic nuclei to study the correlations between the mass of the supermassive Black Hole (MBH) and the properties of their active host galaxies is instrumental resolution. Strong lensing magnification effectively increases instrumental resolution and thus helps to address this challenge. In this work, we study eight strongly lensed active galactic nuclei (AGN) with deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging, using the lens modelling code Lenstronomy to reconstruct the image of the source. Using the reconstructed brightness of the host galaxy, …
Observations have shown that supermassive black holes in nearby elliptical galaxies correlate tightly with the stellar velocity dispersion (the $\MBH - σ$ relation) and the stellar mass (the $\MBH - \Mhost$ relation) of their host spheroids. However, the origin of these correlations remains ambiguous. In a previous paper by Zhu et al., we proposed a model which links the M-$σ$ relation to the the dynamical state of the system and the $\MBH - \Mhost$ relation to the self-regulation of galaxy growth. To test this model, we compile a sample of observed galaxies with different properties and exami…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Cycle 3 observations of CO(2-1) emission from the circumnuclear disk in the E/S0 galaxy NGC 1332 at 0.044" resolution. The disk exhibits regular rotational kinematics and central high-velocity emission (+/-500 km/s) consistent with the presence of a compact central mass. We construct models for a thin, dynamically cold disk in the gravitational potential of the host galaxy and black hole, and fit the beam-smeared model line profiles directly to the ALMA data cube. Model fits successfully reproduce the disk kinematics out to r=200 p…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Cycle 2 observations of CO(2-1) emission from the circumnuclear disks in two early-type galaxies, NGC 1380 and NGC 6861. The disk in each galaxy is highly inclined ($i\,{\sim}\,75^{\circ}$), and the projected velocities of the molecular gas near the galaxy centers are ${\sim}300\,\mathrm{km \, s^{-1}}$ in NGC 1380 and ${\sim}500\,\mathrm{km \, s^{-1}}$ in NGC 6861. We fit thin disk dynamical models to the ALMA data cubes to constrain the masses of the central black holes (BHs). We created host galaxy models using Hubble Space Teles…
We present an estimate of the mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in the nearby type-1 Seyfert galaxy \object{NGC 1097} using Atacamma Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of dense gas kinematics. Dense molecular gas dynamics are traced with ${\rm HCN} (J=1-0)$ and ${\rm HCO^{+}} (J=1-0)$ emission lines. Assuming a host galaxy inclination of $46^{\circ}$, we derive a SMBH mass, $M_{\rm BH}=1.40^{+0.27}_{-0.32} \times 10^{8}M_{\odot}$, and an I-band mass to light ratio to be $5.14^{+0.03}_{-0.04}$, using ${\rm HCN} (J=1-0)$. The estimated parameters are consistent bet…
Galaxies often contain large reservoirs of molecular gas which shape their evolution. This can be through cooling of the gas -- which leads to star formation, or accretion onto the central supermassive black hole -- which fuels AGN activity and produces powerful feedback. Molecular gas has been detected in early-type galaxies on scales of just a few tens to hundreds of solar masses by searching for absorption against their compact radio cores. Using this technique, ALMA has found absorption in several brightest cluster galaxies, some of which show molecular gas moving towards their galaxy's co…
The formation mechanism of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in general, and of $\sim 10^9\,{\rm M}_{\odot}$ SMBHs observed as luminous quasars at redshifts $z> 6$ in particular, remains an open fundamental question. The presence of such massive BHs at such early times, when the Universe was less than a billion years old, implies that they grew via either super-Eddington accretion, or nearly uninterrupted gas accretion near the Eddington limit; the latter, at first glance, is at odds with empirical trends at lower redshifts, where quasar episodes associated with rapid BH growth are rare and bri…
We search for high-redshift (z>4.5) X-ray AGNs in the deep central (off-axis angle <5.7') region of the 7 Ms Chandra Deep Field-South X-ray image. We compile an initial candidate sample from direct X-ray detections. We then probe more deeply in the X-ray data by using pre-selected samples with high spatial resolution NIR/MIR (HST 1.6 micron and Spitzer 4.5 micron) and submillimeter (ALMA 850 micron) observations. The combination of the NIR/MIR and submillimeter pre-selections allows us to find X-ray sources with a wide range of dust properties and spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We use t…
The star formation efficiency (SFE) has been shown to vary across different environments, particularly within galactic starbursts and deep within the bulges of galaxies. Various quenching mechanisms may be responsible, ranging from galactic dynamics to feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN). Here, we use spatially-resolved observations of warm ionised gas emission lines from the imaging Fourier transform spectrograph SITELLE at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) and cold molecular gas (CO(2-1)) from the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) to study the SFE in the bul…
We use ALMA observations of the host galaxy of the quasar ULAS-J1342+0928 at z=7.54 to study the dust continuum and far infrared lines emitted from its interstellar medium. The Rayleigh-Jeans tail of the dust continuum is well sampled with eight different spectral setups, and from a modified black body fit we obtain an emissivity coefficient of beta=1.85+-0.3. Assuming a standard dust temperature of 47 K we derive a dust mass of Mdust=0.35x10^8 Msol and a star formation rate of 150+-30 Msol/yr. We have >4sigma detections of the [CII]_158, [OIII]_88 and [NII]_122 atomic fine structure lines and…
Supermassive black hole (BH) binaries would comprise the strongest sources of gravitational waves (GW) once they reach <<1 pc separations, for both pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) and space based (SB) detectors. While BH binaries coalescences constitute a natural outcome of the cosmological standard model and galaxy mergers, their dynamical evolution is still poorly understood and therefore their abundances at different stages. We use a dynamical model for the decay of BH binaries coupled with a cosmological simulation and semi-empirical approaches to the occupation of haloes by galaxies and BHs, …
We present a self-consistent prediction from a large-scale cosmological simulation for the population of `wandering' supermassive black holes (SMBHs) of mass greater than $10^6$ M$_{\odot}$ on long-lived, kpc-scale orbits within Milky Way (MW)-mass galaxies. We extract a sample of MW-mass halos from the Romulus25 cosmological simulation (Tremmel et al. 2017), which is uniquely able to capture the orbital evolution of SMBHs during and following galaxy mergers. We predict that such halos, regardless of recent merger history or morphology, host an average of $5.1 \pm 3.3$ SMBHs, including their c…
We estimate the amount of negative feedback energy injected into the ISM of the host galaxy of 3C273, a prototypical radio loud quasar. We obtained 93, 233 and 343 GHz continuum images with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Sub-millimeter Array (ALMA). After self calibration and point source subtraction, we reach an image dynamic range of $\sim 85000$ at 93\ GHz, $\sim 39000$ at 233\ GHz and $\sim 2500$ at 343\ GHz. These are currently the highest image dynamic range obtained using ALMA. We detect spatially extended millimeter emission associated with the host galaxy, cospatial with the Extended Em…
We present sub-arcsecond resolution ALMA imaging of the CO(3-2) emission in two $z\sim2.5$ heavily reddened quasars (HRQs) - ULASJ1234+0907 and ULASJ2315+0143 - and their companion galaxies. Dynamical modeling of the resolved velocity fields enables us to constrain the molecular gas morphologies and host galaxy masses. Combining the new data with extensive multi-wavelength observations, we are able to study the relative kinematics of different molecular emission lines, the molecular gas fractions and the locations of the quasars on the M$_{\rm{BH}}$-M$_{\rm{gal}}$ relation. Despite having simi…
We study the spiral arm morphology of a sample of the local spiral galaxies in the Illustris simulation and explore the supermassive black hole - galaxy connection beyond the bulge (e.g., spiral arm pitch angle, total stellar mass, dark matter mass, and total halo mass), finding good agreement with other theoretical studies and observational constraints. It is important to study the properties of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies through both observations and simulations and compare their results in order to understand their physics and formative histories. We find that Illustris…
As part of the mm-Wave Interferometric Survey of Dark Object Masses (WISDOM) project we present an estimate of the mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in the nearby fast-rotating early-type galaxy NGC4429, that is barred and has a boxy/peanut-shaped bulge. This estimate is based on Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) cycle-2 observations of the 12CO(3-2) emission line with a linear resolution of ~13 pc (0"18x0"14). NGC4429 has a relaxed, flocculent nuclear disc of molecular gas that is truncated at small radii, likely due to the combined effects of gas stability and tida…
The outstanding mass growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the Reionisation Epoch and how it is related to the concurrent growth of their host galaxies, poses challenges to theoretical models aimed at explaining how these systems formed in short timescales (<1 Gyr). To trace the average evolutionary paths of quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) and their host galaxies in the BH mass-host mass ($M_{\rm dyn}$) plane, we compare the star formation rate (SFR), derived from the accurate estimate of the dust temperature and the dust mass ($T_{\rm dust}, M_{\rm dust}$), with the BH accretion rate. To…
We present a study of the [CII] 158micron line and underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission of 27 quasar host galaxies at z~6, traced by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array at a spatial resolution of ~1 physical kpc. The [CII] emission in the bright, central regions of the quasars have sizes of 1.0-4.8kpc. The dust continuum emission is typically more compact than [CII]. We find that 13/27 quasars (approximately one-half) have companion galaxies in the field, at projected separations of 3-90kpc. The position of dust emission and the Gaia-corrected positions of the central …
We report ALMA Cycle 0 observations at 1.3mm of LESS J033229.4-275619 (XID403), an Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxy at $z=4.75$ in the Chandra Deep Field South hosting a Compton-thick QSO. The source is not resolved in our data at a resolution of $\sim$0.75 arcsec, placing an upper-limit of 2.5 kpc to the half-light radius of the continuum emission from heated-dust. After deconvolving for the beam size, however, we found a $\sim3σ$ indication of an intrinsic source size of $0.27\pm0.08$ arcsec (Gaussian FWHM), which would correspond to $r_{half}\sim0.9\pm0.3$ kpc. We build the far-IR SED of XID40…
We present the first observational constraint on the Br-gamma recombination line emission associated with the supermassive black hole at the center of our Galaxy, known as Sgr A*. By combining 13 years of data with the Adaptive Optics fed integral field spectrograph OSIRIS at the W. M. Keck Observatory obtained as part of the Galactic Center Orbits Initiative, we extract the near-infrared spectrum within ~0.2'' of the black hole and we derive an upper limit on the Br-gamma flux. The aperture was set to match the size of the disk-like structure that was recently reported based on millimeter-wav…
We present our ALMA Cycle 4 measurements of the [CII] emission line and the underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission from four optically low-luminosity ($M_{\rm 1450} > -25$) quasars at $z \gtrsim 6$ discovered by the Subaru Hyper Suprime Cam (HSC) survey. The [CII] line and FIR continuum luminosities lie in the ranges $L_{\rm [CII]} = (3.8-10.2) \times 10^8~L_\odot$ and $L_{\rm FIR} = (1.2-2.0) \times 10^{11}~L_\odot$, which are at least one order of magnitude smaller than those of optically-luminous quasars at $z \gtrsim 6$. We estimate the star formation rates (SFR) of our targets a…
Similarly to the cosmic star formation history, the black hole accretion rate density of the Universe peaked at 1<z<3. This cosmic epoch is hence best suited for investigating the effects of radiative feedback from AGN. Observational efforts are underway to quantify the impact of AGN feedback, if any, on their host galaxies. Here we present a study of the molecular gas content of AGN hosts at z~1.5 using CO[2-1] line emission observed with ALMA for a sample of 10 AGNs. We compare this with a sample of galaxies without an AGN matched in redshift, stellar mass, and star formation rate. We detect…
