We explore the importance of spatial contextual information in human pose estimation. Most state-of-the-art pose networks are trained in a multi-stage manner and produce several auxiliary predictions for deep supervision. With this principle, we present two conceptually simple and yet computational efficient modules, namely Cascade Prediction Fusion (CPF) and Pose Graph Neural Network (PGNN), to exploit underlying contextual information. Cascade prediction fusion accumulates prediction maps from previous stages to extract informative signals. The resulting maps also function as a prior to guide prediction at following stages. To promote spatial correlation among joints, our PGNN learns a structured representation of human pose as a graph. Direct message passing between different joints is enabled and spatial relation is captured. These two modules require very limited computational complexity. Experimental results demonstrate that our method consistently outperforms previous methods on MPII and LSP benchmark.
In this paper, we propose an end-to-end trainable regression approach for human pose estimation from still images. We use the proposed Soft-argmax function to convert feature maps directly to joint coordinates, resulting in a fully differentiable framework. Our method is able to learn heat maps representations indirectly, without additional steps of artificial ground truth generation. Consequently, contextual information can be included to the pose predictions in a seamless way. We evaluated our method on two very challenging datasets, the Leeds Sports Poses (LSP) and the MPII Human Pose datas…

This paper studies the problem of multi-person pose estimation in a bottom-up fashion. With a new and strong observation that the localization issue of the center-offset formulation can be remedied in a local-window search scheme in an ideal situation, we propose a multi-person pose estimation approach, dubbed as LOGO-CAP, by learning the LOcal-GlObal Contextual Adaptation for human Pose. Specifically, our approach learns the keypoint attraction maps (KAMs) from the local keypoints expansion maps (KEMs) in small local windows in the first step, which are subsequently treated as dynamic convolu…

Monocular depth estimation and semantic segmentation are two fundamental goals of scene understanding. Due to the advantages of task interaction, many works study the joint task learning algorithm. However, most existing methods fail to fully leverage the semantic labels, ignoring the provided context structures and only using them to supervise the prediction of segmentation split, which limit the performance of both tasks. In this paper, we propose a network injected with contextual information (CI-Net) to solve the problem. Specifically, we introduce self-attention block in the encoder to ge…
Hourglass networks such as the U-Net and V-Net are popular neural architectures for medical image segmentation and counting problems. Typical instances of hourglass networks contain shortcut connections between mirroring layers. These shortcut connections improve the performance and it is hypothesized that this is due to mitigating effects on the vanishing gradient problem and the ability of the model to combine feature maps from earlier and later layers. We propose a method for not only combining feature maps of mirroring layers but also feature maps of layers with different spatial dimension…
We explore 3D human pose estimation from a single RGB image. While many approaches try to directly predict 3D pose from image measurements, we explore a simple architecture that reasons through intermediate 2D pose predictions. Our approach is based on two key observations (1) Deep neural nets have revolutionized 2D pose estimation, producing accurate 2D predictions even for poses with self occlusions. (2) Big-data sets of 3D mocap data are now readily available, making it tempting to lift predicted 2D poses to 3D through simple memorization (e.g., nearest neighbors). The resulting architectur…
Over the past decade, there has been a growing interest in human pose estimation. Although much work has been done on 2D pose estimation, 3D pose estimation has still been relatively studied less. In this paper, we propose a top-bottom based two-stage 3D estimation framework. GloabalNet and RefineNet in our 2D pose estimation process enable us to find occluded or invisible 2D joints while 2D-to-3D pose estimator composed of residual blocks is used to lift 2D joints to 3D joints effectively. The proposed method achieves promising results with mean per joint position error at 42.39 on the valida…
We propose a new 2D pose refinement network that learns to predict the human bias in the estimated 2D pose. There are biases in 2D pose estimations that are due to differences between annotations of 2D joint locations based on annotators' perception and those defined by motion capture (MoCap) systems. These biases are crafted into publicly available 2D pose datasets and cannot be removed with existing error reduction approaches. Our proposed pose refinement network allows us to efficiently remove the human bias in the estimated 2D poses and achieve highly accurate multi-view 3D human pose esti…
Human pose estimation in images and videos is one of key technologies for realizing a variety of human activity recognition tasks (e.g., human-computer interaction, gesture recognition, surveillance, and video summarization). This paper presents two types of human pose estimation methodologies; 1) 3D human pose tracking using motion priors and 2) 2D human pose estimation with ensemble modeling.
In this paper, we present a novel approach called KPTransfer for improving modeling performance for keypoint detection deep neural networks via domain transfer between different keypoint subsets. This approach is motivated by the notion that rich contextual knowledge can be transferred between different keypoint subsets representing separate domains. In particular, the proposed method takes into account various keypoint subsets/domains by sequentially adding and removing keypoints. Contextual knowledge is transferred between two separate domains via domain transfer. Experiments to demonstrate …

Estimating human pose is an important yet challenging task in multimedia applications. Existing pose estimation libraries target reproducing standard pose estimation algorithms. When it comes to customising these algorithms for real-world applications, none of the existing libraries can offer both the flexibility of developing custom pose estimation algorithms and the high-performance of executing these algorithms on commodity devices. In this paper, we introduce Hyperpose, a novel flexible and high-performance pose estimation library. Hyperpose provides expressive Python APIs that enable deve…
While there has been a success in 2D human pose estimation with convolutional neural networks (CNNs), 3D human pose estimation has not been thoroughly studied. In this paper, we tackle the 3D human pose estimation task with end-to-end learning using CNNs. Relative 3D positions between one joint and the other joints are learned via CNNs. The proposed method improves the performance of CNN with two novel ideas. First, we added 2D pose information to estimate a 3D pose from an image by concatenating 2D pose estimation result with the features from an image. Second, we have found that more accurat…

The effectiveness of the approaches to predict 3D poses from 2D poses estimated in each frame of a video has been demonstrated for 3D human pose estimation. However, 2D poses without appearance information of persons have much ambiguity with respect to the joint depths. In this paper, we propose to estimate a 3D pose in each frame of a video and refine it considering temporal information. The proposed approach reduces the ambiguity of the joint depths and improves the 3D pose estimation accuracy.

The 3D pose estimation from a single image is a challenging problem due to depth ambiguity. One type of the previous methods lifts 2D joints, obtained by resorting to external 2D pose detectors, to the 3D space. However, this type of approaches discards the contextual information of images which are strong cues for 3D pose estimation. Meanwhile, some other methods predict the joints directly from monocular images but adopt a 2.5D output representation $P^{2.5D} = (u,v,z^{r}) $ where both $u$ and $v$ are in the image space but $z^{r}$ in root-relative 3D space. Thus, the ground-truth informatio…
Video annotation is expensive and time consuming. Consequently, datasets for multi-person pose estimation and tracking are less diverse and have more sparse annotations compared to large scale image datasets for human pose estimation. This makes it challenging to learn deep learning based models for associating keypoints across frames that are robust to nuisance factors such as motion blur and occlusions for the task of multi-person pose tracking. To address this issue, we propose an approach that relies on keypoint correspondences for associating persons in videos. Instead of training the net…

Image segmentation and 3D pose estimation are two key cogs in any algorithm for scene understanding. However, state-of-the-art CRF-based models for image segmentation rely mostly on 2D object models to construct top-down high-order potentials. We show that these complex top-down potentials can be easily decomposed into standard forms for efficient inference in both the segmentation and pose estimation tasks. Despite the large improvements in human pose estimation enabled by the development of convolutional neural networks, there still exist a lot of difficult cases where even the state-of-the-art models fail to correctly localize all body joints. This motivates the need for an additional refinement step that addresses these challenging cases and can be easily applied on top of any existing method. The phenomenon of Human Pose Estimation (HPE) is a problem that has been explored over the years, particularly in computer vision. But what exactly is it? To answer this, the concept of a pose must first be understood. Pose can be defined as the arrangement of human joints in a specific manner. Therefore, we can define the problem of Human Pose Estimation as the localization of human joints or predefined landmarks in images and videos. There are several types of pose estimation, including body, face, and hand, as well as many aspects to it. This paper will cover them, starting with the classic…

Most existing 3D pose estimation algorithms train on data that has either been collected in carefully controlled studio settings or has been generated synthetically. Instead, we take a different approach, and propose a 3D human pose estimation …

Human pose estimation is a key step to action recognition. We propose a method of estimating 3D human poses from a single image, which works in conjunction with an existing 2D pose/joint detector. 3D pose estimation is challenging because multiple 3D poses may correspond to the same 2D pose after projection due to the lack of depth information. Moreover, current 2D pose estimators are usually inaccurate which may cause errors in the 3D estimation. We address the challenges in three ways: (i) We represent a 3D pose as a linear combination of a sparse set of bases learned from 3D human skeletons…
