We present an approach for reconstructing the distribution of electronic internal quantum pressure in the electronic continuum of solids from the experimental electron density. Using the formalism of the density functional theory, we obtain the spatial inner-crystal map of the quantum pressure. The results are visualized via the indicator of quantum pressure focusing (IQPF) which reveals the regions where the pressure is concentrated or depleted due to the quantum effects. IQPF contains all quantum electron shell structure-forming contributions resulting from kinetic, exchange and correlation effects, and presents a clear picture of the chemical bond features in crystals with different type of bonding mechanisms.
Single-run determination of the saturation vapor pressure and enthalpy of vaporization/sublimation of a substance undergoing successive solid-solid and solid-liquid phase transitions: the case of $N$-methyl acetamide
I discuss the behaviour of Group 1 and 2 elements under pressure, describing crystallography based on diamond anvil pressure cell experiments and electronic structure calculations. In addition to these precise methods, we discuss more intuitive pictures of both the electronic driving force for the transitions, and the structural motifs which optimise the electronic energy by opening pseudogaps at the Fermi energy.
It was predicted that solid metallic hydrogen can be obtained if solid molecular hydrogen is pressured to high pressure at low temperature about 80 years ago. Furthermore, the solid metallic hydrogen was theoretically predicted to show superconductivity at room temperature. In addition, surprising prediction was made that the solid metallic hydrogen is a metastable metal with a potential barrier of 1 eV. This prediction implies that the solid metallic hydrogen remains in the metallic solid phase state even after it is released from high pressure. Shock compression synthesized liquid metallic h…
We report a study on the pressure response of the anisotropy energy of hollow and solid maghemite nanoparticles. The differences between the maghemite samples are understood in terms of size, magnetic anisotropy and shape of the particles. In particular, the differences between hollow and solid samples are due to the different shape of the nanoparticles and by comparing both pressure responses it is possible to conclude that the shell has a larger pressure response when compared to the core.
We present a theoretical study of solid carbon dioxide up to 50GPa and 1500K using first-principles calculations. In this pressure-temperature range, interpretations of recent experiments have suggested the existence of CO2 phases which are intermediate between molecular and covalent-bonded solids. We reexamine the concept of intermediate phases in the CO2 phase diagram and propose instead molecular structures, which provide an excellent agreement with measurements.
This paper deals with the analytic derivation of a complete equation of state (EOS) for solids from shock-wave data in the range of pressures and temperatures, attained by detonation of chemical explosives. The caloric, the thermal and the incomplete EOS are determined as well. An equation for the shock temperature along the Hugoniot curve is derived also.
The effect of pressure on the thermal expansion of solid CH$_4$ is calculated for the low temperature region where the contributions from phonons and librons can be neglected and only the rotational tunnelling modes are essential. The effect of pressure is shown to increase the magnitude of the peaks of the negative thermal expansion and shifts the positions of the peaks to the low-temperature region, which goes asymptotically to zero temperature with increasing pressure. The Gruneisen thermodynamical parameter for the rotational tunnelling modes is calculated. It is large, negative, and incre…
Metastable LiMeO2-ZnO (Me = Fe3+, Ti3+) solid solutions with rock salt crystal structure have been synthesized by solid state reaction of ZnO with LiMeO2 complex oxides at 7.7 GPa and 1350-1450 K. Structure, phase composition, thermal stability and thermal expansion of the recovered samples have been studied by X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation. At ambient pressure rock salt LiMeO2-ZnO solid solutions are kinetically stable up to 670-800 K depending on the composition.
We report Raman scattering and visible to near-infrared absorption spectra of solid hydrogen under static pressure up to 285 GPa at 85-140 K. We obtain pressure dependences of vibron and phonon modes in agreement with previously determined to lower pressures. The results indicate the stability of the ordered molecular phase III to the highest pressure reached and provide constraints on the insulator-to-metal transition pressure.
Rare-gas solids (Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe) under hydrostatic pressure up to 30 kbar have been studied by path-integral Monte Carlo simulations in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble. Results of these simulations have been compared with available experimental data and with those obtained from a quasiharmonic approximation (QHA). This comparison allows us to quantify the overall anharmonicity of the lattice vibrations and its influence on several structural and thermodynamic properties of rare-gas solids. The vibrational energy increases with pressure, but this increase is slower than that of the elastic…
Different phases of solid boron under high pressure are studied by first principles calculations. The $α$-B$_{12}$ structure is found to be stable up to 270 GPa. Its semiconductor band gap (1.72 eV) decreases continuously to zero around 160 GPa, where the material transforms to a weak metal. The metallicity, as measured by the density of states at the Fermi level, enhances as the pressure is further increased. The pressure-induced metallization can be attributed to the enhanced boron-boron interactions that cause bands overlap. These results are consist with the recently observed metallization…
Here we report the systematic study of solid-state phase transformations between boron polymorphs: α-B12, β-B106, γ-B28, T-B52 and amorphous boron (am-B). It is evident that the Ostwald rule of stages plays an important role during phase transformations not only of amorphous boron, but also of crystalline forms. We have observed the crystallization of tetragonal boron T-B52 from amorphous phase of high purity (99.99%), which, however, cannot be easily distinguished from B50C2 boron compound. Many factors influence the transformations of amorphous phase, and it is possible to observe not only w…
Results of X-ray diffraction experiments on solid oxygen at low temperature and at pressures up to 10 GPa are presented.A careful sample preparation and annealing around 240 K allowed to obtain very good diffraction patterns in the orthorhombic delta-phase. This phase is stable at low temperature, in contrast to some recent data [Y. Akahama et al., Phys. Rev. B64, 054105 (2001)], and transforms with decreasing pressure into a monoclinic phase, which is identified as the low pressure alpha-phase. The discontinuous change of the lattice parameters, and the observed metastability of the alpha-pha…
The density and the elastic stiffness coefficients of fcc solid argon at high pressures from 1 GPa up to 80 GPa are computed by first-principles pseudopotential method with plane-wave basis set and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The result is in good agreement with the experimental result recently obtained with the Brillouin spectroscopy by Shimizu et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 4568 (2001)]. The Cauchy condition was found to be strongly violated as in the experimental result, indicating large contribution from non-central many-body force. The present result has made it clear that…
We investigate the van der Waals interactions in solid molecular hydrogen structures. We calculate enthalpy and the Gibbs free energy to obtain zero and finite temperature phase diagrams, respectively. We employ density functional theory (DFT) to calculate the electronic structure and Density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) with van der Waals (vdW) functionals to obtain phonon spectra. We focus on the solid molecular $C2/c$, $Cmca$-12, $P6_3/m$, $Cmca$, and $Pbcn$ structures within the pressure range of 200 $<$ P $<$ 450 GPa. We propose two structures of the $C2/c$ and $Pbcn$ for phase I…
This is a short review of the physical ideas, algorithm for the calculation of the phase transition pressure and some results of a semi-classical theory of the behaviour of materials under high pressure proposed by P.Savic and R.Kasanin.It is base on the Coulomb interaction, supplemented by a microscopic selection rule and a set of experimentally founded postulates, and it has found applications from DAC experiments to planetary structure modelling.
Identifying the atomic structure and properties of solid hydrogen under high pressures is a long-standing problem of high-pressure physics with far-reaching significance in planetary and materials science. Determining the pressure-temperature phase diagram of hydrogen is challenging for experiment and theory due to the extreme conditions and the required accuracy in the quantum mechanical treatment of the constituent electrons and nuclei, respectively. Here, we demonstrate explicitly that coupled cluster theory can serve as a computationally efficient theoretical tool to predict solid hydrogen…
X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation has been used for the first time to study chemical interaction in the FeO-ZnO system at 4.8 GPa and temperatures up to 1300 K. Above 750 K, the chemical reaction between FeO and ZnO has been observed that resulted in the formation of rock salt (rs) Fe1-xZnxO solid solutions (0.3 \leq x \leq 0.85). The lattice parameters of these solid solutions have been in situ measured as a function of temperature under pressure, and corresponding thermal expansion coefficients have been calculated.
We compute by means of Quantum Monte Carlo simulations the equation of state of bulk solid {para}hydrogen extrapolated to zero temperature, up to a pressure of ~ 2 MBar. We compare the equation of state yielded by three different pair potentials, namely the Silvera-Goldman, Buck and one recently proposed by Moraldi, modified at short distances to include a repulsive core, missing in the originally proposed potential. The Moraldi pair potential yields an equation of state in very good agreement with experiment at megabar pressures, owing to its softer core, and is at least as accurate as the SG…
The aim of this study is to clarify the physics which governs the transition from epsilon phase to zeta phase of solid oxygen observed experimentally at 96 GPa using density functional theory (DFT). The transition was predicted at 40 GPa with PBE functional. Then the Hubbard correction was added to enhance the localization of p-orbital of oxygen. The epsilon-zeta transition pressure was significantly improved to 70 GPa. Finally, we included the non-local van der Waals correction. The transition pressure slightly increases to 80 GPa. These results demonstrate that the contribution from Hubbard …
X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation has been used for the first time to study chemical interaction in the MnO-ZnO system at 4.8 GPa and temperatures up to 1600 K. Above 750 K, the chemical reaction between MnO and ZnO has been observed that resulted in the formation of rock salt (rs) Mn1-xZnxO solid solutions (0.3 \leq x \leq 0.7). The lattice parameters of these solid solutions have been in situ measured at high pressure as a function of temperature, and corresponding thermal expansion coefficients have been calculated.
A theoretical study is reported of the molecular-to-atomic transition in solid hydrogen at high pressure. We use the diffusion quantum Monte Carlo method to calculate the static lattice energies of the competing phases and a density-functional-theory-based vibrational self-consistent field method to calculate anharmonic vibrational properties. We find a small but significant contribution to the vibrational energy from anharmonicity. A transition from the molecular Cmca-12 direct to the atomic I4_1/amd phase is found at 374 GPa. The vibrational contribution lowers the transition pressure by 91 …
We combine high-pressure x-ray diffraction, high-pressure Raman scattering, and optical microscope to investigate a series of PMN-xPT solid solutions (x=0.2, 0.3, 0.33, 0.35, 0.37, 0.4) in diamond anvil cells up to 20 GPa at 300 K. The Raman spectra show a peak centered at 380 cm-1 above 6 GPa for all samples, in agreement with previous observations. X-ray diffraction measurements are consistent with this spectral change indicating structural phase transition; we find that the triplet at the pseudo cubic (220) Bragg peak merges into a doublet above 6 GPa. Our results indicate that the morphotr…
The appropriateness of including Hg among the transition metals has been debated for a long time. Although the synthesis of HgF$_{4}$ molecules in gas phase was reported before, the molecules show strong instabilities and dissociate. Therefore, the transition metal propensity of Hg remains an open question. Here, we propose that high pressure provides a controllable method for preparing unusual oxidation states of matter. Using an advanced structure search method based on first-principles electronic structure calculations, we predict that under high pressures, Hg can transfer the electrons in …
The oxygen self-diffusion coefficient in UO${_2}$ has been recently studied [Cooper et al. Solid State Ionics 282 (2015) 26-30] over a range of pressures (0-10GPa) and temperatures (300-1900K) by combining molecular dynamics calculations with a thermodynamical model, the cBΩ model. A significant reduction in oxygen self-diffusion as a function of increasing hydrostatic pressure, and the associated increase in activation energy was identified. Here, we extend this study and find that the compressibility of the corresponding activation volume exceeds significantly the compressibility of the bulk…
Solid helium (3He and 4He) in the hcp and fcc phases has been studied by path-integral Monte Carlo. Simulations were carried out in the isothermal-isobaric (NPT) ensemble at pressures up to 52 GPa. This allows one to study the temperature and pressure dependences of isotopic effects on the crystal volume and vibrational energy in a wide parameter range. The obtained equation of state at room temperature agrees with available experimental data. The kinetic energy, E_k, of solid helium is found to be larger than the vibrational potential energy, E_p. The ratio E_k/E_p amounts to about 1.4 at low…
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, and its properties under conditions of high temperature and pressure are crucial to understand the interior of of large gaseous planets and other astrophysical bodies. At ultra high pressures solid hydrogen has been predicted to transform into a quantum fluid, because of its high zero point motion. Here we report first principles two phase coexistence and Z method determinations of the melting line of solid hydrogen in a pressure range spanning from 30 to 600 GPa. Our results suggest that the melting line of solid hydrogen, as derived from…
The crystal structure of solid oxygen at low temperatures and at pressures up to 7 GPa is studied by theoretical calculations. In the calculations, the adiabatic potential of the crystal is approximated by a superposition of pair-potentials between oxygen molecules calculated by an ab-initio method. The monoclinic alpha structure is stable up to 6 GPa and calculated lattice parameters agree well with experiments. The origin of a distortion and that of an anisotropic lattice compressibility of the basal plane of alpha-O2 are clearly demonstrated. In the pressure range from 6 to 7 GPa, two kinds…
A simple model based on atom-atom potential has been used to calculate various bulk, structural and thermodynamic properties of pure C_{60} solid by including implicit anharmonicity. The pressure and temperature dependent properties such as bulk modulus, lattice and orientational structure, thermal expansion, phonon frequency shift, Gruneisen parameters, heat capacity and entropy have been calculated and compared with available data. Though results for some of these properties have been calculated earlier, using improved potential models to suit C60 solid, this paper ascertains the extent of v…
The thermal expansion at constant pressure of solid CD$_4$ III is calculated for the low temperature region where only the rotational tunneling modes are essential and the effect of phonons and librons can be neglected. It is found that in mK region there is a giant peak of the negative thermal expansion. The height of this peak is comparable or even exceeds the thermal expansion of solid N$_2$, CO, O$_2$ or CH$_4$ in their triple points. It is shown that like in the case of light methane, the effect of pressure is quite unusual: as evidenced from the pressure dependence of the thermodynamic G…
The Ehrenfest equation is derived rigorously for the case when an 'effective' volume V* = AV of the strained solids is a continuous function of the temperature. The Ehrenfest equation for strained solids is generalized to an arbitrary temperature. Far from 0 K (in contrast to the situation near 0 K) the phase transition temperature derivative with respect to uniaxial pressure depends on the temperature expansion coefficient of an ' effective' volume. For Rochelle salt strained by a uniaxial pressure at room temperature the predominant contribution into this dependence is made by the coefficien…
We present results of lattice dynamics calculations of Poisson's ratio (PR) for solid hydrogen and rare gas solids (He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe) under pressure. Using two complementary approaches - the semi-empirical many-body calculations and the first-principle density-functional theory calculations we found three different types of pressure dependencies of PR. While for solid helium PR monotonically decreases with rising pressure, for Ar, Kr, and Xe it monotonically increases with pressure. For solid hydrogen and Ne the pressure dependencies of PR are non-monotonic displaying rather deep minimums…
All-solid-state batteries are expected to enable batteries with high energy density with the use of lithium metal anodes. Although solid electrolytes are believed to be mechanically strong enough to prevent lithium dendrites from propagating, various reports today still show cell failure due to lithium dendritic growth at room temperature. While cell parameters such as current density, electrolyte porosity and interfacial properties have been investigated, mechanical properties of lithium metal and the role of applied stack pressure on the shorting behavior is still poorly understood. Here, we…
We have produced and observed metastable solid helium-4 below its melting pressure between 1.1 K and 1.4 K. This is achieved by an intense pressure wave carefully focused inside a crystal of known orientation. An accurate density map of the focal zone is provided by an optical interferometric technique. Depending on the sample, minimum density achieved at focus corresponds to pressures between 2 and 4 bar below the static melting pressure. Beyond, the crystal undergoes an unexpected instability much earlier than the predicted spinodal limit. This opens a novel opportunity to study this quantum…
Dimer C60 solids are monoclinic crystals with molecular longer axis aligned along the c-axis. A simple model based on atom-atom potential used to calculate various bulk, structural and thermodynamic properties of this fullerite, has also been used to investigate the pressure and temperature dependent properties such as bulk modulus, lattice and orientational structure, phonon dispersion relations, Gruneisen parameters, heat capacity and entropy. An important feature of this solid evidently concerns its anisotropic pressure compression. We calculate these directional compressibilities and find …
We present a first-principles computational study of solid 4He at T=0K and pressures up to 160GPa. Our computational strategy consists in using van der Waals density functional theory (DFT-vdW) to describe the electronic degrees of freedom in this material, and the diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) method to solve the Schrodinger equation describing the behavior of the quantum nuclei. For this, we construct an analytical interaction function based on the pairwise Aziz potential that closely matches the volume variation of the cohesive energy calculated with DFT-vdW in dense helium. Interestingly, we…
Understanding the properties of molecular solids at high pressure is a key element in the development of new solid-state theories. However, the most commonly used generalized-gradient approximation (GGA) of the density functional theory (DFT) often fails to correctly describe the behavior of these systems at high pressure. Here we utilize the hybrid DFT approach to model the properties of elemental bromine at high pressure. The calculations reproduce in very good agreement with experiment the properties of the molecular phase I (Cmca symmetry) and its pressure-induced transition into the non-m…
The phase diagram of oxygen is investigated for pressures from 50 to 130~GPa and temperatures up 1200 K using first principles theory. A metallic molecular structure with the $P6_3/mmc$ symmetry ($η^{'}$ phase) is determined to be thermodynamically stable in this pressure range at elevated temperatures above the $ε$(${O_8}$) phase. Long-standing disagreements between theory and experiment for the stability of $ε$(${O_8}$), its metallic character, and the transition pressure to the $ζ$ oxygen phase are resolved. Crucial for obtaining these results are the inclusion of anharmonic lattice dynamic…
A phase-field crystal model based on the density-field approach incorporating high-order interparticle direct correlations is developed to study vapor-liquid-solid coexistence and transitions within a single continuum description. Conditions for the realization of the phase coexistence and transition sequence are systematically analyzed and shown to be satisfied by a broad range of model parameters, demonstrating the high flexibility and applicability of the model. Both temperature-density and temperature-pressure phase diagrams are identified, while structural evolution and coexistence among …
We propose a novel solid-phase epitaxy technique applicable to high annealing temperatures up to 1000 C without re-vaporization of alkali metal elements with high vapor pressures. This technique is demonstrated through the successful growth of high-quality KFe2As2 epitaxial films. The key factors are employing a custom-designed alumina vessel/cover and sealing it in a stainless tube with a large amount of atmospheric KFe2As2 powder in tightly closed sample spaces. This technique can also be effective for other materials composed of elements with very high vapor pressures, such as alkali metals…
Solid He is studied in the pressure and temperature ranges 1-40 TPa and 0-10,000 K using first-principles methods. Anharmonic vibrational properties are calculated within a self-consistent field framework, including the internal and free energies, density-pressure relation, stress tensor, thermal expansion, and the electron-phonon coupling renormalization of the electronic band gap. We find that an accurate description of electron-phonon coupling requires us to use a non-perturbative approach. The metalization pressure of 32.9 TPa at 0 K is larger than found previously. The vibrational effects…
Series of metastable Me1-xZnxO solid solutions (Me = Ni2+, Co2+, Fe2+, Mn2+) with the rocksalt (rs) crystal structure have been synthesized from the binary oxides by quenching from 7.7 GPa and 1450-1650 K. Phase composition of the samples, as well as structural properties and stoichiometry of synthesized solid solutions have been studied by X-ray powder diffraction, both conventional and with synchrotron radiation. The widest (0.3 \leq x \leq 0.8) composition range of the existence of individual rock-salt solid solution has been established for the NiO-ZnO system. The bulk rs-Co1-xZnxO, rs-Fe1…
Solid hydrogen sulfide is well known as a typical molecular crystal but its stability under pressure is still under debate. Particularly, Eremets et al. found the high pressure superconductivity with $T_{c}\approx$ 190 K in a H$_{2}$S sample [arXiv: 1412.0460 (2014)] which is associates with the elemental decomposition into H$_{3}$S [Sci. Rep. 4, 6968 (2014)]. Therefore, on what pressure H$_{2}$S can decompose and which kind of the products of decomposition urgent need to be solved. In this paper, we have performed an extensive structural study on different stoichiometries H$_{n}$S with ${n> 1…
In the Cu Cr system, the formation of supersaturated solid solutions can be obtained by severe plastic deformation. Energy dispersive synchrotron diffraction measurements on as deformed Cu Cr samples as a function of the applied strain during deformation confirm the formation of supersaturated solid solutions in this usually immiscible system. Due to evaluation of the diffraction data by a newly developed energy dispersive Rietveld program, lattice parameter and microstructural parameters such as domain size and microstrain are determined for as deformed as well as annealed samples. The obtain…
By employing first-principles metadynamics simulations, we explore the 300 K structures of solid hydrogen over the pressure range 150-300 GPa. At 200 GPa, we find the ambient-pressure disordered hexagonal close-packed (hcp) phase transited into an insulating partially ordered hcp phase (po-hcp), a mixture of ordered graphene-like H2 layers and the other layers of weakly coupled, disordered H2 molecules. Within this phase, hydrogen remains in paired states with creation of shorter intra-molecular bonds, which are responsible for the very high experimental Raman peak above 4000 cm-1. At 275 GPa,…
Establishing the phase diagram of hydrogen is a major challenge for experimental and theoretical physics. Experiment alone cannot establish the atomic structure of solid hydrogen at high pressure, because hydrogen scatters X-rays only weakly. Instead our understanding of the atomic structure is largely based on density functional theory (DFT). By comparing Raman spectra for low-energy structures found in DFT searches with experimental spectra, candidate atomic structures have been identified for each experimentally observed phase. Unfortunately, DFT predicts a metallic structure to be energeti…
Solid rigidity and liquid-scale mobility are thought incompatible in elemental substances. One cannot have an elemental solid that is long-range positionally ordered wherein the atoms flow like in a liquid simultaneously. The only exception might be the hypothetical supersolid state of 4He. In this work, we demonstrate that such exotic state could exist even in the classical regime. Using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and ab initio path integral molecular dynamics (AI-PIMD), a novel state of dense hydrogen which simultaneously has both long-range spatial ordering and liquid-scale atomic …
This article is a continuation of the past three papers, arXiv:1711.04976 (2017), arXiv:1809.04291 (2018), and arXiv:2006.09673v2 (2020), in which configurations of the molecules around a vacancy in solid CO2 with the Pa3 structure (phase I) were calculated by the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation technique at T < 200 K and at a nominal pressure of P = 1 atm using lattice constants determined in reference to experimental data. For the intermolecular potential, the Kihara model of a rod-shape core with zero diameter was used. For theoretical consistency, however, the lattice constant should be determ…

We report first-principles calculations of the frequency dependent linear and second-order optical properties of the two probable extended-solid phases of CO$_2$--V, i.e. $I\bar42d$ and $P2_12_12_1$. Compared to the parent $Cmca$ phase the linear optical susceptibility of both phases is much smaller. We find that $I\bar42d$ and $P2_12_12_1$ differ substantially in their linear optical response in the higher energy regime. The nonlinear optical responses of the two possible crystal structures differ by roughly a factor of five. Since the differences in the nonlinear optical spectra are pronounc…
The high-pressure phases of solid hydrogen are of fundamental interest and relevant to the interior of giant planets; however, knowledge of these phases is far from complete. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) techniques were applied to a structural search, yielding hitherto unexpected high-pressure phases of solid hydrogen at pressures up to 5 TPa. An exotic quasi-molecular mC24 structure (space group C2/c, stable at 0.47-0.59 TPa) with two types of intramolecular bonds was predicted, providing a deeper understanding of molecular dissociation in solid hydrogen, which has been a mystery for dec…
We present an accurate study of the static-nucleus electronic energy band gap of solid molecular hydrogen at high pressure. The excitonic and quasiparticle gaps of the $C2/c$, $Pc$, $Pbcn$, and $P6_3/m$ structures at pressures of 250, 300, and 350~GPa are calculated using the fixed-node diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) method. The difference between the mean-field and many-body band gaps at the same density is found to be almost independent of system size and can therefore be applied as a scissor correction to the mean-field gap of an infinite system to obtain an estimate of the many-body g…
The description of the molecular solid phase of O$_2$, especially its ground-state antiferromagnetic insulating phase, is known to be quite unsatisfactory within the conventional local and semilocal density functional approximations used in the Kohn-Sham formalism of density functional theory. The recently-developed van der Waals functionals that take into account nonlocal correlations have also shown subpar performance in this regard. The difficulty lies in the subtle balance between the van der Waals interactions and the exchange coupling between the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic molec…
High pressure behavior of potassium chlorate (KClO$_3$) has been investigated from 0-10 GPa by means of first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The calculated ground state parameters, transition pressure and phonon frequencies using semiempirical dispersion correction scheme are in excellent agreement with experiment. It is found that KClO$_3$ undergoes a pressure induced first order phase transition with an associated volume collapse of 6.4$\%$ from monoclinic (\emph{P2$_1$/m}) $\rightarrow$ rhombohedral (\emph{R3m}) structure at 2.26 GPa, which is in good accord with e…
This paper investigates some of the successes and failures of density functional theory in the study of high-pressure solid hydrogen at low temperature. We calculate the phase diagram, metallization pressure, phonon spectrum, and proton zero-point energy using three popular exchange-correlation functionals: the local density approximation (LDA), the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) generalized gradient approximation, and the semi-local Becke-Lee-Yang-Parr (BLYP) functional. We focus on the solid molecular P$6_3$/m, C2/c, Cmca-12, and Cmca structures in the pressure range from $100<P<500$ GPa over …
