Using first principles calculations, the use of strain to adjust electronic transport and the resultant thermoelectric (TE) properties is discussed using 2H phase CuAlO2 as a test case. Transparent oxide materials, such as CuAlO2, a p-type transparent conducting oxide (TCO), have recently been studied for high temperature thermoelectric power generators and coolers for waste heat. Given TCO materials with relative ease of fabrication, low cost of materials, and non-toxicity, the ability to tailor them to specific temperature ranges, power needs, and size requirements, through the use of strain opens an interesting avenue. We find that strain can have a significant effect on these properties, in some cases detrimental and in others beneficial, including the potential for n-type power factors larger than the highest p-type case. The physical reasons for this behavior are explained in the terms of the thermoelectric transport distribution and the Landauer distribution of modes.
Biaxial strain effects on electronic structures and thermoelectric properties of monolayer $\mathrm{PtTe_2}$ are investigated by using generalized gradient approximation (GGA) plus spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for the electron part and GGA for the phonon part. Calculated results show that small compressive strain (about -3\%) can induce semiconductor-to-metal transition, which can easily be achieved in experiment. The conduction bands convergence is observed for unstrained $\mathrm{PtTe_2}$, which can be removed by both compressive and tensile strains. Tensile strain can give rise to valence band…
Strain engineering is a very effective method to tune electronic, optical, topological and thermoelectric properties of materials. In this work, we systematically study biaxial strain dependence of electronic structures and thermoelectric properties (both electron and phonon parts) of monolayer $\mathrm{PtSe_2}$ with generalized gradient approximation (GGA) plus spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for electron part and GGA for phonon part. Calculated results show that compressive or tensile strain can induce conduction band minimum (CBM) or valence band maximum (VBM) transition, which produces important…
Two-dimensional group IV transition-metal dichalcogenides have encouraging thermoelectric applications since their electronic and lattice properties can be manipulated with strain. In this paper, we report the thermoelectric parameters such as electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficients, electrical relaxation times, and the mode dependent contributions to the lattice thermal conductivity of ZrX$_2$ (X = S, Se, Te) from first principles methods. Our calculations indicate that due to tensile strain, the powerfactor increases while simultaneously decreasing the lattice thermal conductivity thus…
The sensitive dependence of electronic and thermoelectric properties of MoS$_2$ on the applied strain opens up a variety of applications in the emerging area of straintronics. Using first principles based density functional theory calculations, we show that the band gap of few layers of MoS$_2$ can be tuned by applying i) normal compressive (NC), ii) biaxial compressive (BC), and iii) biaxial tensile (BT) strain. A reversible semiconductor to metal transition (S-M transition) is observed under all three types of strain. In the case of NC strain, the threshold strain at which S-M transition occ…
Rare-earth monopnictides have attracted much attention due to their unusual electronic and topological properties for potential device applications. Here, we study rock-salt structured lanthanum monopnictides LaX (X = P, As) by density functional theory (DFT) simulations. We show systematically that a meta-GGA functional combined with scissor correction can efficiently and accurately compute electronic structures on a fine DFT $k$-grid, which is necessary for converging thermoelectric calculations. We also show that strain engineering can effectively improve thermoelectric performance. Under t…
We study the transport properties, in particular, the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT of armchair graphene nanoribbons, AGNR-N (for N=4-12, with widths ranging from 3.7 to 13.6~Å) through strain engineering, where N is the number of carbon dimer lines across the AGNR width. We find that the tensile strain applied to AGNR-$N$ changes the transport properties by modifying the electronic structures and phonon dispersion relations. The tensile strain increases the ZT value of the AGNR-$N$ families with N=3p and N=3p+2, where $p$ is an integer. Our analysis based on accurate density-functional th…
On the basis of detailed first-principles calculations and semi-classical Boltzmann transport, the anisotropic thermoelectric transport properties of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Sb$_2$Te$_3$ under strain were investigated. It was found that due to compensation effects of the strain dependent thermopower and electrical conductivity, the related powerfactor will decrease under applied in-plane strain for Bi$_2$Te$_3, while being stable for Sb$_2$Te$_3$. A clear preference for thermoelectric transport under hole-doping, as well as for the in-plane transport direction was found for both tellurides. In contra…
The structural stability, electronic structure, and thermal transport properties of one to six quintuple layers (QLs) of Bi2Se3 are investigated by van der Waals density functional theory and semi-classical Boltzmann theory. The bandgap amounts to 0.41 eV for a single QL and reduces to 0.23 eV when the number of QLs increases to six. A single QL has a significantly higher thermoelectric figure of merit (0.27) than the bulk material (0.10), which can be further enhanced to 0.30 by introducing 2.5% compressive strain. Positive phonon frequencies under strain indicate that the structural stabilit…
The strain effect on electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of Higher Manganese Silicides (HMSs) Mn4Si7 was studied using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and through solving Boltzman Transport Equation (BTE). We found that the tensile strain attempts to reduce the band gap while the compressive strain not much affect to band gap. The Seebeck coeficient was found to be increased with increasing temperature, which is very consistent to experiments. The electrical conductivity and power factor show highly degree of anisotropy, where in-plane direction is more dominant. The different b…
By combining first-principles simulations including an on-site Coulomb repulsion term and Boltzmann theory, we demonstrate how the interplay of quantum confinement and epitaxial strain allows to selectively design $n$- and $p$-type thermoelectric response in (LaNiO$_3$)$_3$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_1(001)$ superlattices. In particular, varying strain from $-4.9$ to $+2.9\%$ tunes the Ni orbital polarization at the interfaces from $-6$ to $+3\%$. This is caused by an electron redistribution among Ni $3d_{x^2-y^2}$- and $3d_{z^2}$-derived quantum well states which respond differently to strain. Owing to thi…
The anisotropic thermoelectric transport properties of bulk silicon strained in [111]-direction were studied by detailed first-principles calculations focussing on a possible enhancement of the power factor. Electron as well as hole doping were examined in a broad doping and temperature range. At low temperature and low doping an enhancement of the power factor was obtained for compressive and tensile strain in the electron-doped case and for compressive strain in the hole-doped case. For the thermoelectrically more important high temperature and high doping regime a slight enhancement of the …
By a combination of first-principles calculations and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory, we investigate the effect of epitaxial strain on the electronic structure and transport properties of PtCoO$_2$ and PdCoO$_2$. In contrast to the rather uniform elastic response of both systems, we predict for PtCoO$_2$ a high sensitivity of the out-of-plane transport properties to strain, which is not present in PdCoO$_2$. At ambient temperature, we identify a considerable absolute change in the thermopower from $-107\,μ$V/K at $-5\,$\% compressive strain to $-303\,μ$V/K at $+5\,$\% tensile strain…
Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides show great potential as promising thermoelectric materials due to their lower dimensionality, the unique density of states and quantum confinement of carriers. The effect of mechanical strain on the thermoelectric performances of monolayer WS 2 has been investigated using density functional theory associated with semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory. The variation of Seebeck coefficient and band gap with applied strain has followed the same type of trend. For n-type material the relaxation time scaled power factor(S 2 σ/τ) increases by the a…
By combining ab initio simulations including an on-site Coulomb repulsion term and Boltzmann theory, we explore the thermoelectric properties of (LaNiO$_3$)$_n$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_n$(001) superlattices ($n=1,3$) and identify a strong dependence on confinement, spacer thickness, and epitaxial strain. While the system with $n=3$ shows modest values of the Seebeck coefficient and power factor, the simultaneous reduction of the LaNiO$_3$ region and the LaAlO$_3$ spacer thickness to single layers results in a strong enhancement, in particular of the in-plane values. This effect can be further tuned by us…

The newly emerging monolayer phosphorene was recently predicted to be a promising thermoelectric material. In this work, we propose to further enhance the thermoelectric performance of phosphorene by the strain-induced band convergence. The effect of the uniaxial strain on the thermoelectric properties of phosphorene was investigated by using the first-principles calculations combined with the semi-classical Boltzmann theory. When the zigzag-direction strain is applied, the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity in zigzag direction can be greatly enhanced simultaneously at the critica…
Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3 are layered compounds of technological importance, being excellent thermoelectric materials as well as topological insulators. We report density functional theory calculations of the atomic, electronic and thermoelectric properties of strained bulk and thin film Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3, focusing on an appropriate description of van der Waals interactions. The calculations show that the van der Waals Density functional with Cooper's exchange can reproduce closely the experimental interlayer distances in unstrained Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3. Interestingly, we predict atomic structures that a…
To better understand and enhance the thermoelectric efficiency of a new class of Mg-based thermoelectrics, using hybrid density-functional theory, we study the microscopic origins of valley degeneracies in the conduction band of the solid solution Mg2Si1-xSnx and its constituent components - namely, Mg2Si and Mg2Sn. In the solid solution of Mg2Si1-xSnx, the Mg sublattice and Si/Sn sublattice are expected to undergo either tensile or compressive strain. Interestingly, both tensile strain of Mg2Si and compressive strain of Mg2Sn enhance the conduction band valley degeneracy or band convergence, …
A caloritronic device setup is proposed that harnesses the intrinsic spin-valley locking of two-dimensional honeycomb lattices with graphene-like valleys, for instance, silicene and stanene. Combining first-principles and analytic calculations, we quantitatively show that when sheets of such materials are placed on a ferromagnetic substrate and held between two contacts at different temperatures, an interplay between the electron degrees-of-freedom of charge, spin, and valley arises. A manifestation of this interplay are finite charge, spin, and valley currents. Uniaxial strain that adjusts th…
We study role of site substitutions at In and Te site in In2Te5 on the thermoelectric behavior. Single crystals with compositions In2(Te1-xSex)5 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10) and Fe0.05In1.95(Te0.90Se0.10)5 were prepared using modified Bridgman-Stockbarger technique. Electrical and thermal transport properties of these single crystals were measured in the temperature range 6 - 395 K. A substantial decrease in thermal conductivity is observed in Fe substituted samples attributed to the enhanced phonon point-defect scattering. Marked enhancement in Seebeck coefficient S along with a concomitant suppressio…

Thermoelectric properties of the system La$_2$NiO$_{4+δ}$ have been recently discussed [Phys. Rev. B 86, 165114 (2012)] via ab initio calculations. An optimum hole-doping value was obtained with reasonable thermopower and thermoelectric figure of merit being calculated. Here, a large increase in the thermoelectric performance through lattice strain and the corresponding atomic relaxations is predicted. This increase would be experimentally attainable via growth in thin films of the material on top of different substrates. A small tensile strain would produce large thermoelectric figures of mer…
Recent studies indicated the interesting metal-to-semiconductor transition when layered bulk GeP3 and SnP3 are restricted to the monolayer or bilayer, and SnP3 monolayer has been predicted to possess high carrier mobility and promising thermoelectric performance. Here, we investigate the biaxial strain effect on the electronic and thermoelectric properties of SnP3 monolayer. Our first-principles calculations combined with Boltzmann transport theory indicate that SnP3 monolayer has the pudding-mold-type valence band structure, giving rise to a large p-type Seebeck coefficient and a high p-type …
Band convergence is an effective strategy to improve the thermoelectric performance of complex bandstructure thermoelectric materials. Half-Heuslers are good candidates for band convergence studies because they have multiple bands near the valence bad edge that can be converged through various band engineering approaches providing power factor improvement opportunities. Theoretical calculations to identify the outcome of band convergence employ various approximations for the carrier scattering relaxation times (the most common being the constant relaxation time approximation) due to the high c…
Interest in the application of thermoelectric devices for renewable energy has risen over the past decade. In this paper, we calculate the transport properties of various configurations of the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) MSe$_2$ (M = Hf, Zr, Ti) in search of promising thermoelectric materials at low/high temperatures. We explore the properties of the pure monolayer at discrete levels of biaxial tensile strain (epsilon = 0%, 2%, 4%, 8%), as well as those of the van der Waals heterobilayers MSe$_2$/MSe$_2$ using first-principles calculations combined with semi-classical Boltzmann trans…
The impact of epitaxial strain on the structural, electronic, and thermoelectric properties of p-type transparent Sr-doped LaCrO3 thin films has been investigated. For this purpose, high-quality fully strained La0.75Sr0.25CrO3 (LSCO) epitaxial thin films were grown by molecular beam epitaxy on three different (pseudo)cubic (001)-oriented perovskite oxide substrates: LaAlO3, (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7, and DyScO3. The lattice mismatch between the LSCO films and the substrates induces in-plane strain ranging from -2.06% (compressive) to +1.75% (tensile). The electric conductivity can be controlle…
The phonon and electron transport in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) are investigated using the nonequilibrium Green's function approach. In zigzag SWCNT ($n$, 0) with $mod(n,3)\not=0$, the thermal conductance is mainly attributed to the phonon transport, while the electron only has few percentage contribution. The maximum value of the figure of merit ($ZT$) is about 0.2 in this type of SWCNT. The $ZT$ is considerably larger in narrower SWCNT because of enhanced Seebeck coefficient. $ZT$ is smaller in the armchair SWCNT, where Seebeck coefficient is small due to zero band gap. It is fou…
The layered misfit cobaltate Ca$_3$Co$_4$O$_9$, also known as Ca$_2$CoO$_3$[CoO$_2$]$_{1.62}$, is a promising p-type thermoelectric oxide. Employing density functional theory, we study its electronic structure and determine, on the basis of Boltzmann theory within the constant-relaxation-time approximation, the thermoelectric transport coefficients. The dependence on strain and temperature is determined. In particular, we find that the $xx$-component of the thermopower is strongly enhanced, while the $yy$-component is strongly reduced, when applying 2% tensile strain. A similar anisotropy is a…

The superposition of flexoelectronic doping and topological phonons give rise to topological electronic magnetism of phonon in an inhomogeneously strained Si in the bilayer structure with metal. In case of ferromagnetic metal and Si bilayer structure, the flexoelectronic doping will also give rise to larger spin current, which will lead to large spin to charge conversion due to topological electronic magnetism of phonon. By applying a temperature difference to ferromagnetic metal/Si bilayer structure under an applied strain gradient, a large thermoelectric response can be generated. In this ex…
Biaxial strain dependence of electronic structures and thermoelectric properties of monolayer $\mathrm{MoS_2}$, including compressive and tensile strain, are investigated by using local-density approximation (LDA) plus spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Both LDA and LDA+SOC results show that $\mathrm{MoS_2}$ is a direct gap semiconductor with optimized lattice constants. It is found that SOC has important effect on power factor, which can enhance one in n-type doping, but has a obvious detrimental influence for p-type. Both compressive and tensile strain can induce direct-indirect gap transition, whic…
Solid-state precipitation can be used to tailor materials properties, ranging from ferromagnets and catalysts to mechanical strengthening and energy storage. Thermoelectric properties can be modified by precipitation to enhance phonon scattering while retaining charge-carrier transmission. Here, we uncover unconventional dual Janus-type nanoprecipitates in Mg3Sb1.5Bi0.5 formed by side-by-side Bi- and Ge-rich appendages, in contrast to separate nanoprecipitate formation. These Janus nanoprecipitates result from local co-melting of Bi and Ge during sintering, enabling an amorphous-like lattice t…
We systematically investigated the geometric, electronic and thermoelectric (TE) properties of bulk black phosphorus (BP) under strain. The hinge-like structure of BP brings unusual mechanical responses such as anisotropic Young's modulus and negative Poisson's ratio. A sensitive electronic structure of BP makes it transform among metal, direct and indirect semiconductors under strain. The maximal figure of merit $ZT$ of BP is found to be 0.72 at $800\,\mathrm{K}$ that could be enhanced to 0.87 by exerting an appropriate strain, revealing BP could be a potential medium-high temperature TE mate…
Strain engineering is a very effective method to continuously tune the electronic, topological, optical and thermoelectric properties of materials. In this work, strain-dependent phonon transport of recently-fabricated antimonene (Sb monolayer) under biaxial strain is investigated from a combination of first-principles calculations and the linearized phonon Boltzmann equation. It is found that the ZA dispersion of antimonene with strain less than -1\% gives imaginary frequencies, which suggests that compressive strain can induce structural instability. Experimentally, it is possible to enhance…
Half-Heuslers, an emerging thermoelectric material group, has complex bandstructures with multiple bands that can be aligned through band engineering approaches, giving us an opportunity to improve their power factor. In this work, going beyond the constant relaxation time approximation, we perform an investigation of the benefits of band alignment in improving the thermoelectric power factor under different density of states dependent scattering scenarios. As a test case we consider the Co-based p-type half-Heuslers TiCoSb, NbCoSn and ZrCoSb. First, using simplified effective mass models comb…
To assess the potential of polycrystalline MnBi as a transverse thermoelectric material, we have experimentally investigated its anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) by means of the heat flux method. We prepared MnBi samples by powder metallurgy; this technique allows the preparation of samples in arbitrary shapes with the possibility to tailor their magnetic properties. In the material exhibiting the highest remanent magnetization, we found a value of the ANE thermopower of -1.1 $μ$V/K at 1 T, after the compensation of the ordinary Nernst effect from pure bismuth present inside the polycrystalline s…
Motivated by the recently observed unconventional Hall effect in ultra-thin films of ferromagnetic SrRuO$_3$ (SRO) we investigate the effect of strain-induced oxygen octahedral distortion in the electronic structure and anomalous Hall response of the SRO ultra-thin films by virtue of density functional theory calculations. Our findings reveal that the ferromagnetic SRO films grown on SrTiO$_3$ (in-plane strain of $-$0.47$\%$) have an orthorhombic (both tilting and rotation) distorted structure and with an increasing amount of substrate-induced compressive strain the octahedral tilting angle is…
The crystal structure of the thermoelectric material tin selenide has been investigated with angle-dispersive synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction under hydrostatic pressure up to 27 GPa. With increasing pressure, a continuous evolution of the crystal structure from the GeS type to the higher-symmetry TlI type was observed, with a critical pressure of 10.5(3) GPa. The orthorhombic high-pressure modification, beta'-SnSe, is closely related to the pseudo-tetragonal high-temperature modification at ambient pressure. The similarity between the changes of the crystal structure at elevated temperatu…
Improving the figure of merit $zT$ of thermoelectric materials requires simultaneously a high power factor and low thermal conductivity. An effective approach for increasing the power factor is to align the band extremum and achieve high band degeneracy ($\geq$ 12) near the Fermi level as realized in PbTe [\textcolor{blue}{Pei et. al. \textit{Nature} 473, 66 (2010)}], which usually relies on band structure engineering, e.g., chemical doping and strain. However, very few materials could achieve such a high band degeneracy without heavy doping or suffering impractical strain. By employing state-…
Recently a metallic state was discovered at the interface between insulating oxides, most notably LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. Properties of this two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) have attracted significant interest due to its potential applications in nanoelectronics. Control over this carrier density and mobility of the 2DEG is essential for applications of these novel systems, and may be achieved by epitaxial strain. However, despite the rich nature of strain effects on oxide materials properties, such as ferroelectricity, magnetism, and superconductivity, the relationship between the strain and el…
Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dinitride (HfN2) has been studied for their optoelectronic, piezoelectric, and thermoelectric properties. Both monolayer and bilayer of HfN2 were studied using density functional theory (DFT) and Boltzmann transport equation (BTE). The bilayer of HfN2 with different stacking layers (AA and AB) showed different electronic properties. The optical property of the material suggests that it is a very good absorber in the ultraviolet (UV) region thus, can be used as a UV-photodetector and as an absorber layer in photovoltaic devices. The piezoelectric properties…
Transition-metal oxides with an ABO$_3$ perovskite structure exhibit strongly entangled structural and electronic degrees of freedom and thus, one expects to unveil exotic phases and properties by acting on the lattice through various external stimuli. Using the Jahn-Teller active praseodymium vanadate Pr$^{3+}$V$^{3+}$O$_3$ compound as a model system, we show that PrVO$_3$ Néel temperature T$_N$ can be raised by 40 K with respect to the bulk when grown as thin films. Using advanced experimental techniques, this enhancement is unambiguously ascribed to a tetragonality resulting from the epitax…
Transparent oxide materials, such as $CuAlO_{2}$, a p-type transparent conducting oxide (TCO), have recently been studied for high temperature thermoelectric power generators and coolers for waste heat. TCO materials are generally low cost and non-toxic. The potential to engineer them through strain and nano-structuring are two promising avenues toward continuously tuning the electronic and thermal properties to achieve high zT values and low cost/kW-hr devices. In this work, the strain-dependent lattice thermal conductivity of 2H $CuAlO_{2}$ is computed by solving the phonon Boltzmann transpo…
Identifying and understanding the mechanisms behind strong phonon-phonon scattering in condensed matter systems is critical to maximizing the efficiency of thermoelectric devices. To date, the leading method to address this has been to meticulously survey the full phonon dispersion of the material in order to isolate modes with anomalously large linewidth and temperature-dependence. Here we combine quantitative MeV ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) analysis with Monte Carlo based dynamic diffraction simulation and first-principles calculations to directly unveil the soft, anharmonic lattice…
In scaling of transistor dimensions with low source-to-drain currents, 1D semiconductors with certain electronic properties are highly desired. We discover three new 1D materials, SbSeI, SbSI and SbSBr with high stability and novel electronic properties based on first principles calculations. Both dynamical and thermal stability of these 1D materials are examined. The bulk-to-1D transition results in dramatic changes in band gap, effective mass and static dielectric constant due to quantum confinement, making 1D SbSeI a highly promising channel material for transistors with gate length shorter…
