Half-dozen of extreme representatives of void dwarf galaxy population were found in our study of evolutionary status of a hundred galaxies in the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. They are very gas-rich, extremely low-metallicity [7.0 < 12+log(O/H)< ~7.3] objects, with blue colours of outer parts. The colours indicate the ages of the oldest visible stellar population of one to a few Gyr. They all are intrinsically faint, mostly Low Surface Brightness dwarfs, with M_B range of -9.5 to -14 mag. Thus, their finding is a subject of the severe observational selection. The recent advancement in search for such objects in other nearby voids resulted in doubled their total number. We summarize all available data on this group of unusual void dwarf galaxies and discuss them in the general context of very low metallicity galaxies and their possible formation and evolutionary scenarios.
We construct a sample of 10,680 wall galaxies and 3,064 void galaxies with $M_R \lesssim -20$ by cross referencing a void catalog from literature with Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) CMASS and WiggleZ galaxies, where the CMASS survey targets redder galaxies and the WiggleZ survey targets bluer galaxies. Comparing the density profiles of the red and blue galaxies as a function of the void radius, we find that the number ratio of red-to-blue galaxies increases with distances from the void centers, suggesting a deficit of luminous and normal red galaxies in voids. We find a mean (g…
We measure the environmental dependence, where environment is defined by the distance to the third nearest neighbor, of multiple galaxy properties inside the Environmental COntext (ECO) catalog. We focus primarily on void galaxies, which we define as the $10 \%$ of galaxies having the lowest local density. We compare the properties of void and non-void galaxies: baryonic mass, color, fractional stellar mass growth rate (FSMGR), morphology, and gas-to-stellar-mass ratio (estimated from a combination of HI data and photometric gas fractions calibrated with the RESOLVE survey). Our void galaxies …
The lowest metallicity massive stars in the Local Universe with Z~(Zo/50-Zo/30) are the crucial objects to test the validity of assumptions in the modern models of very low-metallicity massive star evolution. These models, in turn, have major implications for our understanding of galaxy and massive star formation in the early epochs. DDO68-V1 in a void galaxy DDO68 is a unique extremely metal-poor massive star. Discovered by us in 2008 in the HII region Knot3 with Z = Zo/35 [12+log(O/H)=7.14], DDO68-V1 was identified as an LBV star. We present here the LBV lightcurve in V band, combining own n…
Galaxies in cosmic voids have been reported with properties related to a delayed evolution with respect to the Universe in general. These characteristics reflect the interaction of galaxies with the environment. However, it is not clear the degree of influence of the large-scale structure on the properties of void galaxies or, if these are only influenced by the low local density around them typical of these regions. In this article we identified cosmic voids in the SDSS-DR16 and studied various properties of galaxies, such as g-r colour, star formation rate, and concentration. To characterise…

We examine how the cosmic environment affects the chemical evolution of galaxies in the Universe by comparing the N/O ratio of dwarf galaxies in voids with dwarf galaxies in more dense regions. Ratios of the forbidden [O III] and [S II] transitions provide estimates of a region's electron temperature and number density. We estimate the abundances of oxygen and nitrogen using these temperature and density estimates and the emission line fluxes [O II] 3727, [O III] 4959, 5007, and [N II] 6548, 6584 with the direct Te method. Using spectroscopic observations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data…
The evolution of galaxies depends on their environments. In this work, active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity in different environments has been studied. The fractions of radio and optical AGN in four different environments have been compared using samples of void, isolated, group member, and the brightest group galaxies (BGGs). Galaxies in voids show significantly lower stellar ages, concentrations, colours and surface mass densities, and they experience more one-on-one interactions compared to the isolated galaxies and galaxies in groups. In order to study pure environmental effects, the bia…
In the framework of an ongoing project aimed at searching for and studying eXtremely Metal-Poor (XMP) very gas-rich blue dwarfs in nearby voids, we conducted spectroscopy with the 11-m Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) of 26 candidates, preselected in the first paper of this series (PEPK19). For 23 of them, we detected Oxygen lines, allowing us to estimate the gas O/H ratio. For ten of them, the oxygen abundance is found to be very low, in the range of 12+log(O/H)=6.95-7.30 dex. Of those, four void dwarfs have 12+log(O/H) < 7.19, or Z < Zo/30. For the majority of observed galaxies, the f…
Properties of dwarf galaxies formed and evolved in the lowest density environment remain largely unexplored and poorly understood. Especially this concerns the low-mass end (M_bar < 10^9 Mo). We overview the results of systematic study of a hundred void dwarfs from the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. We describe the ongoing project aiming to form Nearby Void galaxy sample (R < 25 Mpc) over the whole sky. 1354 objects with distances less than 25 Mpc fall within 25 voids delineated by 460 luminous galaxies/groups. The void major sizes range from 13 to 37 Mpc. 1088 of 1354 void galaxies reside deeply in…
We introduce a project aimed at systematically searching for eXtremely Metal-Poor (XMP) very gas-rich blue dwarfs in voids in the nearby Universe. Several such galaxies were first identified in the course of an unbiased study of the galaxy population in the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. These very rare and unusual galaxies appear to be the best proxies for the so-called Very Young Galaxies (VYGs) defined recently in the model simulations by Tweed et al. (2018). We discuss the main properties of ten prototype objects residing in nearby voids and formulate criteria to search for similar dwarfs in oth…
Using hydrodynamical $N$-body simulations, we show that the observed structure and kinematics of the extremely metal-poor, dwarf irregular galaxy DDO 68 is compatible with a merger event with at least two smaller satellite galaxies. We were able to obtain a self-consistent model that simultaneously reproduces several of its observed features, including: the very asymmetric and disturbed shape of the stellar component, the overall HI distribution and its velocity field, the arc-like stellar structure to the west, the low-surface brightness stellar stream to the north. The model implies the inte…
We study how the cosmic environment affects galaxy evolution in the Universe by comparing the metallicities of dwarf galaxies in voids with dwarf galaxies in more dense regions. Ratios of the fluxes of emission lines, particularly those of the forbidden [O III] and [S II] transitions, provide estimates of a region's electron temperature and number density. From these two quantities and the emission line fluxes [O II] 3727, [O III] 4363, and [O III] 4959,5007, we estimate the abundance of oxygen with the Direct Te method. We estimate the metallicity of 42 blue, star-forming void dwarf galaxies …
The intermediate results of the ongoing study of deep samples of ~200 galaxies residing in nearby voids, are presented. Their properties are probed via optical spectroscopy, ugri surface photometry, and HI 21-cm line measurements, with emphasis on their evolutionary status. We derive directly the hydrogen mass M(HI), the ratio M(HI)/L_B and the evolutionary parameter gas-phase O/H. Their luminosities and integrated colours are used to derive stellar mass M(*) and the second evolutionary parameter -- gas mass-fraction f_g. The colours of the outer parts, typically representative of the galaxy o…
Voids occupy about 3/4 of the volume of the Universe and contain about 15% of its mass. Due to various observational selection effects, these structure elements and galaxies populating voids, are highly under-explored. This especially relates to the lowest mass galaxies which comprise the main void population. Studying the nearby voids allows us to improve our understanding of the most elusive void objects. We present the brief overview of the current status and the prospects of the study of the nearest voids and their galaxies. First, we summarize the pioneer study of a hundred galaxies resid…

We present a deep far and near-ultraviolet (FUV and NUV) wide-field imaging survey of galaxies in the Bootes Void using Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope onboard {\em AstroSat}. Our data reach $5σ$ limiting magnitudes for point sources at 23.0 and 24.0 AB mag in FUV and NUV respectively. We report a total of six star-forming galaxies residing in the Bootes Void alongside the full catalog, and of these, three are newly detected in our FUV observation. Our void galaxy sample spans a range of UV colors $(-0.35\, \leq$ FUV$-$NUV $\leq\, 0.68)$ and absolute magnitudes $(-14.16\, \leq\, \mathrm{M_{NUV}…

We present the second part of results of the on-going project of searching for and studying eXtremely Metal-Poor (XMP, adopted as those with Z(gas) <~ Zo/30, or with 12+log(O/H) <~ 7.21~dex) very gas-rich blue dwarfs in voids. They were first identified in course of the 'unbiased' study of galaxy population in the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. These very rare and unusual galaxies seem to be the best proxies of so-called Very Young Galaxies (VYGs) defined recently in model simulations by Tweed et al. To date, for 16 preselected void XMP candidates, we obtained with the SAO 6-m telescope (BTA) spectra…
The influence of under-dense environments on the formation and evolution of galaxies is studied by analysing the photometric properties of ~200 galaxies residing in voids, taken from our SDSS DR10 void catalogue up to z ~0.055. We split void galaxies into two subsamples based on the luminosity density contrast of their host voids: 'sparse void' δ_s = δ < -0.95 and 'populous void' δ_p = δ > -0.87. We find that galaxies in sparse voids are less massive than galaxies in populous voids. The luminosity distribution of galaxies in populous voids follows the same distribution observed across the SDSS…

Does the void environment have a sizable effect on the evolution of dwarf galaxies? If yes, the best probes should be the most fragile least massive dwarfs. We compiled a sample of about one hundred dwarfs with M_B in the range -12 to -18 mag, falling within the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. The goal is to study their evolutionary parameters -- gas metallicity and gas mass-fraction, and to address the epoch of the first substantial episode of Star Formation. Here we present and discuss the results of O/H measurements in 38 void galaxies, among which several the most metal-poor galaxies are found wi…
We have analyzed bibliographical observational data and theoretical predictions, in order to probe the environment in which extremely metal-poor dwarf galaxies (XMPs) reside. We have assessed the HI component and its relation to the optical galaxy, the cosmic web type (voids, sheets, filaments and knots), the overdensity parameter and analyzed the nearest galaxy neighbours. The aim is to understand the role of interactions and cosmological accretion flows in the XMP observational properties, particularly the triggering and feeding of the star formation. We find that XMPs behave similarly to Bl…
We present a new method of tracking and characterizing the environment in which galaxies and their associated circumgalactic medium evolve. We use a structure finding algorithm we developed to self-consistently parse and follow the evolution of poor clusters, filaments and voids in large scale simulations. We trace the complete evolution of the baryons in the gas phase and the star formation history within each structure in our simulated volume. We vary the structure measure threshold to probe the complex inner structure of star forming regions in poor clusters, filaments and voids. We find th…
We have analyzed new HST/ACS and HST/WFC3 imaging in F475W and F814W of two previously-unobserved fields along the M31 minor axis to confirm our previous constraints on the shape of M31's inner stellar halo. Both of these new datasets reach a depth of at least F814W$<$27 and clearly detect the blue horizontal branch (BHB) of the field as a distinct feature of the color-magnitude diagram. We measure the density of BHB stars and the ratio of BHB to red giant branch stars in each field using identical techniques to our previous work. We find excellent agreement with our previous measurement of a …
Voids represent a unique environment for the study of galaxy evolution, as the lower density environment is expected to result in shorter merger histories and slower evolution of galaxies. This provides an ideal opportunity to test theories of galaxy formation and evolution. Imaging of the neutral hydrogen, central in both driving and regulating star formation, directly traces the gas reservoir and can reveal interactions and signs of cold gas accretion. For a new Void Galaxy Survey (VGS), we have carefully selected a sample of 59 galaxies that reside in the deepest underdensities of geometric…
The low-mass low-surface brightness (LSB) disc galaxy Arakelian 18 (Ark 18) resides in the Eridanus void and because of its isolation represents an ideal case to study the formation and evolution mechanisms of such a galaxy type. Its complex structure consists of an extended blue LSB disc and a bright central elliptically-shaped part hosting a massive off-centered star-forming clump. We present the in-depth study of Ark 18 based on observations with the SCORPIO-2 long-slit spectrograph and a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer at the Russian 6-m telescope complemented by archival multi-wavelen…
Globular clusters have been recognized to host multiple stellar populations. A spectacular example of this is the massive cluster NGC2808, where multiple populations have been found along the horizontal branch (HB) and the main sequence (MS). Studies of red giants showed that this cluster appears homogeneous insofar Fe abundance is concerned, but it shows an extended anticorrelation between Na and O abundances. The Na-poor, O-rich population can be identified with the red MS, and the Na-rich, O-poor one with the blue one. This may be understood in terms of different He content, He being correl…
In this study we present high-resolution VIsible Multi-Object Spectrograph integral field unit spectroscopy (VIMOS-IFU) of the extremely metal-poor HII/blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy Tol 65. The optical appearance of this galaxy shows clearly a cometary morphology with a bright main body and an extended and diffuse stellar tail. We focus on the detection of metallicity gradients or inhomogeneities as expected if the ongoing star-formation activity is sustained by the infall/accretion of metal-poor gas. No evidences of significant spatial variations of abundances were found within our uncertai…

Extremely metal poor (XMP) galaxies are known to be very rare, despite the large numbers of low-mass galaxies predicted by the local galaxy luminosity function. This paper presents a sub-sample of galaxies that were selected via a morphology-based search on SDSS images with the aim of finding these elusive XMP galaxies. By using the recently discovered extremely metal-poor galaxy, Leo P, as a guide, we obtained a collection of faint, blue systems, each with isolated HII regions embedded in a diffuse continuum, that have remained optically undetected until now. Here we show the first results fr…
DDO68 (UGC5340) is an unusual dwarf galaxy with extremely low gas metallicity (12+log(O/H) = 7.14) residing in the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. Despite its apparent isolation, it shows both optical and HI morphological evidence for strong tidal disturbance. Here, we study the resolved stellar populations of DDO68 using deep images from the HST archive. We determined a distance of 12.75+-0.41 Mpc using the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB). The star formation history reconstruction reveals that about 60 per cent of stars formed during the initial period of star formation, about 12-14 Gyr ago. Duri…
The main goal of this study is to carry out a spatially resolved investigation of the warm interstellar medium (ISM) in the extremely metal-poor Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxy HS 2236+1344. Special emphasis is laid on the analysis of the spatial distribution of chemical abundances, emission-line ratios and kinematics of the ISM, and to the recent star-forming activity in this galaxy. This study is based on optical integral field unit spectroscopy data from Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph at the Gemini North telescope and archival Sloan Digital Sky Survey images. The data were obtained in two…
The metal-poor sub-population of globular cluster (GC) systems exhibits a correlation between the GC average colour and luminosity, especially in those systems associated with massive elliptical galaxies. More luminous (more massive) GCs are typically redder and hence more metal-rich. This 'blue tilt' is often interpreted as a mass-metallicity relation stemming from GC self-enrichment, whereby more massive GCs retain a greater fraction of the enriched gas ejected by their evolving stars, fostering the formation of more metal-rich secondary generations. We examine the E-MOSAICS simulations of t…
Metal-poor globular clusters (GCs) are our local link to the earliest epochs of star formation and galaxy building. Studies of extragalactic GC systems using deep, high-quality imaging have revealed a small but significant slope to the color-magnitude relation for metal-poor GCs in a number of galaxies. We present a study of the M87 GC system using deep, archival HST/ACS imaging with the F606W and F814W filters, in which we find a significant color-magnitude relation for the metal-poor GCs. The slope of this relation in the I vs. V-I color-magnitude diagram ($γ_I=-0.024\pm0.006$) is perfectly …
We present a study of nearby dwarf galaxies selected from the ALFALFA blind HI survey. A primary goal of the project was to utilize a non-standard selection method with the hope of detecting previously unrecognized extremely metal-poor (XMP) galaxies. The study was motivated by the recent discovery of two XMP galaxies $-$ Leo P and Leoncino $-$ which were both originally found via the ALFALFA survey. We have obtained narrowband H$α$ images for 42 dwarf systems, many of which are located in the local void in front of the Pisces-Perseus Supercluster. Spectra for eleven of the best candidates res…
Witnessing a Transformation to Blue-cored Dwarf Early-type Galaxies in Filaments and the Cluster Outskirts: Gas-phase Abundances and Internal Kinematics Perspectives
We present a quantitative analysis of the low-resolution (4.5 A) spectra of 12 late-B and early-A blue supergiants (BSGs) in the metal-poor dwarf galaxy NGC 3109. A modified method of analysis is presented which does not require use of the Balmer jump as an independent temperature indicator, as used in previous studies. We determine stellar effective temperatures, gravities, metallicities, reddening, and luminosities, and combine our sample with the early-B type BSGs analyzed by Evans et al. (2007) to derive the distance to NGC 3109 using the Flux-weighted Gravity-Luminosity Relation (FGLR). U…
Context: Outflows from low-mass star-forming galaxies are a fundamental ingredient for models of galaxy evolution and cosmology. Aims: The onset of kpc-scale ionised filaments in the halo of the metal-poor compact dwarf SBS 0335-052E was previously not linked to an outflow. We here we investigate whether these filaments provide evidence for an outflow. Methods: We obtained new VLT/MUSE WFM and deep NRAO/VLA B-configuration 21cm data of the galaxy. The MUSE data provide morphology, kinematics, and emission line ratios H$β$/H$α$ and [\ion{O}{iii}]$\lambda5007$/H$α$ of the low surface-brightness …
Blue (metal-poor) globular clusters are observed to have half-light radii that are ~20% larger than their red (metal-rich) counterparts. The origin of this enhancement is not clear and differences in either the luminosity function or in the actual size of the clusters have been proposed. I analyze a set of dynamically self-consistent Monte Carlo globular cluster simulations to determine the origin of this enhancement. I find that my simulated blue clusters have larger half-light radii due to differences in the luminosity functions of metal-poor and metal-rich stars. I find that the blue cluste…
He has been proposed as a key element to interpret the observed multiple MS, SGB, and RGB, as well as the complex horizontal branch (HB) morphology. Stars belonging to the bluer part of the HB, are thought to be more He rich (ΔY=0.03 or more) and more Na-rich/O-poor than those located in the redder part. This hypothesis was only partially confirmed in NGC 6752, where stars of the redder zero-age HB showed a He content of Y=0.25+-0.01, fully compatible with the primordial He content of the Universe, and were all Na-poor/O-rich. Here we study hot blue HB (BHB) stars in the GC NGC 6121 (M4) to me…
We present the results of a photometric study of 85 objects from the updated sample of galaxies residing in the nearby Lynx--Cancer void. We perform our photometry on u, g, r, and i-band images of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We determine model-independent galaxy parameters such as the integrated magnitudes and colors, effective radii and the corresponding surface brightness values, optical radii and Holmberg radii. We analyze the radial surface brightness profiles to determine the central brightness values and scale lengths of the model discs. We analyze the colors of the outer parts of the …
Searching for extreme emission line galaxies allows us to find low-mass metal-poor galaxies that are good analogs of high redshift Ly$α$ emitting galaxies. These low-mass extreme emission line galaxies are also potential Lyman-continuum leakers. Finding them at very low redshifts ($z\lesssim0.05$) allows us to be sensitive to even lower stellar masses and metallicities. We report on a sample of extreme emission line galaxies at $z\lesssim0.05$ (blueberry galaxies). We selected them from SDSS broadband images on the basis of their broad band colors, and studied their properties with MMT spectro…
