Demazure characters, also known as key polynomials, generalize the classical Schur polynomials. In particular, when all variables are set equal to $1$, these polynomials count the number of integer points in a certain class of Gelfand--Tsetlin polytopes. This property highlights the interaction between the corresponding polyhedral and combinatorial structures via Ehrhart theory. In this paper, we give an overview of results concerning the interplay between the geometry of Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes and their Ehrhart polynomials. Motivated by strong computer evidence, we propose several conjectures about the non-negativity of the coefficients of such polynomials.
This paper studies the properties of Demazure atoms and characters using linear operators and also tableaux-combinatorics. It proves the atom-positivity property of the product of a dominating monomial and an atom, which was an open problem. Furthermore, it provides a combinatorial proof to the key-positivity property of the product of a dominating monomial and a key using skyline fillings, an algebraic proof to the key-positivity property of the product of a Schur function and a key using linear operator and verifies the first open case for the conjecture of key-positivity of the product of t…
Ehrhart discovered that the function that counts the number of lattice points in dilations of an integral polytope is a polynomial. We call the coefficients of this polynomial Ehrhart coefficients, and say a polytope is Ehrhart positive if all Ehrhart coefficients are positive (which is not true for all integral polytopes). The main purpose of this article is to survey interesting families of polytopes that are known to be Ehrhart positive and discuss the reasons from which their Ehrhart positivity follows. We also include examples of polytopes that have negative Ehrhart coefficients and polyt…
For a given lattice polytope, two fundamental problems within the field of Ehrhart theory are to (1) determine if its (Ehrhart) $h^\ast$-polynomial is unimodal and (2) to determine if its Ehrhart polynomial has only positive coefficients. The former property of a lattice polytope is known as Ehrhart unimodality and the latter property is known as Ehrhart positivity. These two properties are often simultaneously conjectured to hold for interesting families of lattice polytopes, yet they are typically studied in parallel. As to answer a question posed at the 2017 Introductory Workshop to the MSR…
Catalan functions, the graded Euler characteristics of certain vector bundles on the flag variety, are a rich class of symmetric functions which include $k$-Schur functions and parabolic Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We prove that Catalan functions indexed by partition weight are the characters of $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_\ell)$-generalized Demazure crystals as studied by Lakshmibai-Littelmann-Magyar and Naoi. We obtain Schur positive formulas for these functions, settling conjectures of Chen-Haiman and Shimozono-Weyman. Our approach more generally gives key positive formulas for graded Eul…
We say a polytope is Ehrhart positive if all the coefficients in its Ehrhart polynomial are positive. Answering an Ehrhart positivity question posed on Mathoverflow, Stanley provided an example of a non-Ehrhart-positive order polytope of dimension $21$. Stanley's example comes from a certain family of order polytopes. In this paper, we study the Ehrhart positivity question on this family of polytopes. By giving explicit formulas for the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomials of these polytopes in terms of Bernolli numbers, we determine the sign of each Ehrhart coefficient of each polytope in …
For $\ba \in \R_{\geq 0}^{n}$, the Tesler polytope $\tes_{n}(\ba)$ is the set of upper triangular matrices with non-negative entries whose hook sum vector is $\ba$. Motivated by a conjecture of Morales', we study the questions of whether the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of $\tes_n(1,1,\dots,1)$ are positive. We attack this problem by studying a certain function constructed by Berline-Vergne and its values on faces of a unimodularly equivalent copy of $\tes_n(1,1,\dots,1).$ We develop a method of obtaining the dot products appeared in formulas for computing Berline-Vergne's function d…
We study semigroup algebras arising from lattice polytopes, compute their volume polynomials (particularizing work of Hochster), and establish strong Lefschetz properties (generalizing work of the first three authors). This resolves several conjectures concerning unimodality properties of the $h^\ast$-polynomial of lattice polytopes arising within Ehrhart theory.
We establish a poset structure on combinatorial bases of multivariate polynomials defined by positive expansions, and study properties common to bases in this poset. Included are the well-studied bases of Schubert polynomials, Demazure characters and Demazure atoms; the quasi-key, fundamental and monomial slide bases introduced in 2017 by Assaf and the author; and a new basis we introduce completing this poset structure. We show the product of a Schur polynomial and an element of a basis in this poset expands positively in that basis; in particular, we give the first Littlewood-Richardson rule…
We characterize all signed Minkowski sums that define generalized permutahedra, extending results of Ardila-Benedetti-Doker (2010). We use this characterization to give a complete classification of all positive, translation-invariant, symmetric Minkowski linear functionals on generalized permutahedra. We show that they form a simplicial cone and explicitly describe their generators. We apply our results to prove that the linear coefficients of Ehrhart polynomials of generalized permutahedra, which include matroid polytopes, are non-negative, verifying conjectures of De Loera-Haws-Koeppe (2009)…
We provide a formula for the Ehrhart polynomial of the connected matroid of size $n$ and rank $k$ with the least number of bases, also known as a minimal matroid. We prove that their polytopes are Ehrhart positive and $h^*$-real-rooted (and hence unimodal). We prove that the operation of circuit-hyperplane relaxation relates minimal matroids and matroid polytopes subdivisions, and also preserves Ehrhart positivity. We state two conjectures: that indeed all matroids are $h^*$-real-rooted, and that the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of a connected matroid of fixed rank and cardinality ar…
In this article we disprove the conjectures asserting the positivity of the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of matroid polytopes by De Loera, Haws and Köppe (2007) and of generalized permutohedra by Castillo and Liu (2015). We prove constructively that for every $n\geq 19$ there exist connected matroids on $n$ elements that are not Ehrhart positive. Also, we prove that for every $k\geq 3$ there exist connected matroids of rank $k$ that are not Ehrhart positive. Our proofs rely on our previous results on the geometric interpretation of the operation of circuit-hyperplane relaxation and o…
We present examples of smooth lattice polytopes in dimensions 3 and higher where each coefficient of their Ehrhart polynomials that can potentially be negative is indeed negative. This answers a question by Bruns. We also discuss Berline-Vergne valuations as a useful tool in proving Ehrhart positivity results.
In earlier work in collaboration with Pavel Galashin and Thomas McConville we introduced a version of chip-firing for root systems. Our investigation of root system chip-firing led us to define certain polynomials analogous to Ehrhart polynomials of lattice polytopes, which we termed the symmetric and truncated Ehrhart-like polynomials. We conjectured that these polynomials have nonnegative integer coefficients. Here we affirm "half" of this positivity conjecture by providing a positive, combinatorial formula for the coefficients of the symmetric Ehrhart-like polynomials. This formula depends …
A Demazure crystal is the basis at $q=0$ of a Demazure module. Demazure crystals play an important role in Schubert calculus because the character of a Demazure crystal in type A is identical to a key polynomial, which is closely related to Schubert polynomials. In this paper, we study tensor products of Demazure crystals. Each connected component of a tensor product of Demazure crystals need not be isomorphic to some Demazure crystal. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for every connected component of a tensor product to be isomorphic to some Demazure crystal. Also, we obtain the…
We introduce the notion of combinatorial positivity of translation-invariant valuations on convex polytopes that extends the nonnegativity of Ehrhart h*-vectors. We give a surprisingly simple characterization of combinatorially positive valuations that implies Stanley's nonnegativity and monotonicity of h*-vectors and generalizes work of Beck et al. (2010) from solid-angle polynomials to all translation-invariant simple valuations. For general polytopes, this yields a new characterization of the volume as the unique combinatorially positive valuation up to scaling. For lattice polytopes our re…
A polynomial has saturated Newton polytope (SNP) if every lattice point of the convex hull of its exponent vectors corresponds to a monomial. We compile instances of SNP in algebraic combinatorics (some with proofs, others conjecturally): skew Schur polynomials; symmetric polynomials associated to reduced words, Redfield--Polya theory, Witt vectors, and totally nonnegative matrices; resultants; discriminants (up to quartics); Macdonald polynomials; key polynomials; Demazure atoms; Schubert polynomials; and Grothendieck polynomials, among others. Our principal construction is the Schubitope. Fo…
For a lattice polytope P, define A_P(t) as the sum of the solid angles of all the integer points in the dilate tP. Ehrhart and Macdonald proved that A_P(t) is a polynomial in the positive integer variable t. We study the numerator polynomial of the solid-angle series sum_{t >= 0} A_P(t) z^t. In particular, we examine nonnegativity of its coefficients, monotonicity and unimodality questions, and study extremal behavior of the sum of solid angles at vertices of simplices. Some of our results extend to more general valuations.
