For positive integers $n$ and $e$, let $κ(n,e)$ be the minimum crossing number (the standard planar crossing number) taken over all graphs with $n$ vertices and at least $e$ edges. Pach, Spencer and Tóth [Discrete and Computational Geometry 24 623--644, (2000)] showed that $κ(n,e) n^2/e^3$ tends to a positive constant (called midrange crossing constant) as $n\to \infty$ and $n \ll e \ll n^2$, proving a conjecture of Erdős and Guy. In this note, we extend their proof to show that the midrange crossing constant exists for graph classes that satisfy a certain set of graph properties. As a corollary, we show that the the midrange crossing constant exists for the family of bipartite graphs. All these results have their analogues for rectilinear crossing numbers.
We verify an upper bound of Pach and Tóth [Combinatorica 17(1997), 427-439, Discrete and Computational Geometry 36(2006), 527-552] on the midrange crossing constant. Details of their $\frac{8}{9π^2}$ upper bound have not been available. Our verification is different from their method and hinges on a result of Moon [J. Soc. Indust. Appl. Math. 13(1965), 506-510]. As Moon's result is optimal, we raise the question whether the midrange crossing constant is $\frac{8}{9π^2}$.

A graph is called 1-planar if it can be drawn in the plane so that each of its edges is crossed by at most one other edge. In this paper we decompose the set of all 1-planar graphs into three classes $\mathcal C_0, \mathcal C_1$ and $\mathcal C_2$ with respect to the types of crossings and present the decomposition of 1-planar join products. Zhang \cite{z} proved that every $n$-vertex 1-planar graph of class $\mathcal C_1$ has at most $\frac{18}{5}n-\frac{36}{5}$ edges and a $\mathcal C_1$-drawing with at most $\frac 35 n-\frac 65$ crossings. We improve these results. We show that every $\math…
Classes with bounded expansion, which generalise classes that exclude a topological minor, have recently been introduced by Nešetřil and Ossona de Mendez. These classes are defined by the fact that the maximum average degree of a shallow minor of a graph in the class is bounded by a function of the depth of the shallow minor. Several linear-time algorithms are known for bounded expansion classes (such as subgraph isomorphism testing), and they allow restricted homomorphism dualities, amongst other desirable properties. In this paper we establish two new characterisations of bounded expansion c…
For a finite set $X$, we say that a set $H\subseteq X$ crosses a partition ${\cal P}=(X_1,\dots,X_k)$ of $X$ if $H$ intersects $\min (|H|,k)$ partition classes. If $|H|\geq k$, this means that $H$ meets all classes $X_i$, whilst for $|H|\leq k$ the elements of the crossing set $H$ belong to mutually distinct classes. A set system ${\cal H}$ crosses ${\cal P}$, if so does some $H\in {\cal H}$. The minimum number of $r$-element subsets, such that every $k$-partition of an $n$-element set $X$ is crossed by at least one of them, is denoted by $f(n,k,r)$. The problem of determining these minimum va…
It is well known that the number of distinct non-crossing matchings of $n$ half-circles in the half-plane with endpoints on the x-axis equals the $n^{th}$ Catalan number $C_n$. This paper generalizes that notion of linear non-crossing matchings, as well as the circular non-crossings matchings of Goldbach and Tijdeman, to non-crossings matchings of $n$ line segments embedded within an annulus. We prove that the number of such matchings $\vert Ann(n,m) \vert$ with $n$ exterior endpoints and $m$ interior endpoints correspond to an entirely new, one-parameter generalization of the Catalan numbers …
This paper solves the combinatorics relating the intersection theory of $ψ$-classes of Hassett spaces to that of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$. A generating function for intersection numbers of $ψ$ classes on all Hassett spaces is obtained from the Gromov-Witten potential of a point via a non-invertible transformation of variables. When restricting to diagonal weights, the changes of variables are invertible and explicitly described as polynomial functions. Finally, the comparison of potentials is extended to the level of cycles: the pinwheel cycle potential, a generating function for tautolo…
We study punctual quot-schemes of torsion-free sheaves $E_Y$ on smooth projective curves, surfaces and Calabi--Yau fourfolds via their virtual geometry. Our goal is to give a complete description of the virtual fundamental classes and their tautological integrals. In the fourfold case, we first construct these classes under additional conditions. We use novel methods relying on the wall-crossing of Joyce. Our results include -the dependence of the cobordism classes on the torsion-free sheaf $E_Y$ where $Y$ is a surface, -relations to the previous results in the literature, which addressed the …
A geometric graph \G is a simple graph drawn in the plane, on points in general position, with straight-line edges. We call \G a geometric realization of the underlying abstract graph G. A geometric homomorphism from \G to \H is a vertex map that preserves adjacencies and crossings (but not necessarily non-adjacencies or non-crossings). Geometric homomorphisms can be used to define a partial order on the set of isomorphism classes of geometric realizations of an abstract graph G. In this paper, the homomorphism poset of K_{3,3} is determined.
Let $st=\{st_1,\ldots,st_k\}$ be a set of $k$ statistics on permutations with $k\geq 1$. We say that two given subset of permutations $T$ and $T'$ are $st$-Wilf-equivalent if the joint distributions of all statistics in $st$ over the sets of $T$-avoiding permutations $S_n(T)$ and $T'$-avoiding permutations $S_n(T')$ are the same. The main purpose of this paper is the (cr,nes)-Wilf-equivalence classes for all single patterns in $S_3$, where cr and nes denote respectively the statistics number of crossings and nestings. One of the main tools that we use is the bijection $Θ:S_n(321)\rightarrow S_…
We prove that the exact crossing number of a graph can be efficiently computed for simple graphs having bounded vertex cover. In more precise words, Crossing Number is in FPT when parameterized by the vertex cover size. This is a notable advance since we know only very few nontrivial examples of graph classes with unbounded and yet efficiently computable crossing number. Our result can be viewed as a strengthening of a previous result of Lokshtanov [arXiv, 2015] that Optimal Linear Arrangement is in FPT when parameterized by the vertex cover size, and we use a similar approach of reducing the …
The Harary-Hill conjecture states that for every $n>0$ the complete graph on $n$ vertices $K_n$, the minimum number of crossings over all its possible drawings equals \begin{align*} H(n) := \frac{1}{4}\Big\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\Big\rfloor\Big\lfloor\frac{n-1}{2}\Big\rfloor\Big\lfloor\frac{n-2}{2}\Big\rfloor\Big\lfloor\frac{n-3}{2}\Big\rfloor\text{.} \end{align*} So far, the lower bound of the conjecture could only be verified for arbitrary drawings of $K_n$ with $n\leq 12$. In recent years, progress has been made in verifying the conjecture for certain classes of drawings, for example $2$-page-boo…
The Harary-Hill Conjecture states that for $n\geq 3$ every drawing of $K_n$ has at least \begin{align*} H(n) := \frac{1}{4}\Big\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\Big\rfloor\Big\lfloor\frac{n-1}{2}\Big\rfloor\Big\lfloor\frac{n-2}{2}\Big\rfloor\Big\lfloor\frac{n-3}{2}\Big\rfloor \end{align*} crossings. In general the problem remains unsolved, however there has been some success in proving the conjecture for restricted classes of drawings. The most recent and most general of these classes is seq-shellability. In this work, we improve these results and introduce the new class of semi-pair-shellable drawings. We p…
In 1958, Hill conjectured that the minimum number of crossings in a drawing of $K_n$ is exactly $Z(n) = \frac{1}{4} \lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor \left\lfloor\frac{n-1}{2}\right\rfloor \left\lfloor\frac{n-2}{2}\right\rfloor\left\lfloor\frac{n-3}{2}\right\rfloor$. Generalizing the result by Ábrego et al. for 2-page book drawings, we prove this conjecture for plane drawings in which edges are represented by $x$-monotone curves. In fact, our proof shows that the conjecture remains true for $x$-monotone drawings of $K_n$ in which adjacent edges may cross an even number of times, and instead of the cro…
A simple topological graph T = (V(T), E(T)) is a drawing of a graph in the plane where every two edges have at most one common point (an endpoint or a crossing) and no three edges pass through a single crossing. Topological graphs G and H are isomorphic if H can be obtained from G by a homeomorphism of the sphere, and weakly isomorphic if G and H have the same set of pairs of crossing edges. We generalize results of Pach and Toth and the author's previous results on counting different drawings of a graph under both notions of isomorphism. We prove that for every graph G with n vertices, m edge…
The Harary-Hill Conjecture States that the number of crossings in any drawing of the complete graph $ K_n $ in the plane is at least $Z(n):=\frac{1}{4}\left\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\right\rfloor \left\lfloor\frac{n-1}{2}\right\rfloor \left\lfloor \frac{n-2}{2}\right\rfloor\left\lfloor \frac{n-3}{2}\right\rfloor$. In this paper, we settle the Harary-Hill conjecture for {\em shellable drawings}. We say that a drawing $D$ of $ K_n $ is {\em $ s $-shellable} if there exist a subset $ S = \{v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_ s\}$ of the vertices and a region $R$ of $D$ with the following property: For all $1 \leq i < j \…
A permutation may be represented by a collection of paths in the plane. We consider a natural class of such representations, which we call tangles, in which the paths consist of straight segments at 45 degree angles, and the permutation is decomposed into nearest-neighbour transpositions. We address the problem of minimizing the number of crossings together with the number of corners of the paths, focusing on classes of permutations in which both can be minimized simultaneously. We give algorithms for computing such tangles for several classes of permutations.
Let $X_{2k}$ be a set of $2k$ labeled points in convex position in the plane. We consider geometric non-intersecting straight-line perfect matchings of $X_{2k}$. Two such matchings, $M$ and $M'$, are disjoint compatible if they do not have common edges, and no edge of $M$ crosses an edge of $M'$. Denote by $\mathrm{DCM}_k$ the graph whose vertices correspond to such matchings, and two vertices are adjacent if and only if the corresponding matchings are disjoint compatible. We show that for each $k \geq 9$, the connected components of $\mathrm{DCM}_k$ form exactly three isomorphism classes -- n…
For a class $\mathcal{D}$ of drawings of loopless (multi-)graphs in the plane, a drawing $D \in \mathcal{D}$ is \emph{saturated} when the addition of any edge to $D$ results in $D' \notin \mathcal{D}$ - this is analogous to saturated graphs in a graph class as introduced by Turán (1941) and Erdős, Hajnal, and Moon (1964). We focus on $k$-planar drawings, that is, graphs drawn in the plane where each edge is crossed at most $k$ times, and the classes $\mathcal{D}$ of all $k$-planar drawings obeying a number of restrictions, such as having no crossing incident edges, no pair of edges crossing mo…
\noindent By a seminal result of Valiant, computing the permanent of $(0,1)$-matrices is, in general, $\#\mathsf{P}$-hard. In 1913 Pólya asked for which $(0,1)$-matrices $A$ it is possible to change some signs such that the permanent of $A$ equals the determinant of the resulting matrix. In 1975, Little showed these matrices to be exactly the biadjacency matrices of bipartite graphs excluding $K_{3,3}$ as a \{matching minor}. This was turned into a polynomial time algorithm by McCuaig, Robertson, Seymour, and Thomas in 1999. However, the relation between the exclusion of some matching minor in…
The k-domination number of a graph is the minimum size of a set X such that every vertex of G is in distance at most k from X. We give a linear time constant-factor approximation algorithm for k-domination number in classes of graphs with bounded expansion, which include e.g. proper minor-closed graph classes, classes closed on topological minors or classes of graphs that can be drawn on a fixed surface with bounded number of crossings on each edge. The algorithm is based on the following approximate min-max characterization. A subset A of vertices of a graph G is d-independent if the distance…
