Key flow regions linked to jet noise sources are investigated through comparison of convection velocity and turbulence measurements in high speed three-stream nozzles. A time-resolved Doppler global velocimetry (DGV) instrument was applied in the Nozzle Acoustic Test Rig (NATR) at NASA's Aero-Acoustic Propulsion Lab to measure 250 kHz repetition laser scattering signals arising from seeding particles at 32 points in high speed flow. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements previously reported by NASA provided mean velocity and turbulence intensity. Results for convection velocity of the particle concentration field were obtained from the DGV data for three-stream nozzle configurations using a cross-correlation approach. The three-stream cases included an axisymmetric and an asymmetric, offset nozzle configuration. For the axisymmetric case, areas of high convection velocity and turbulence intensity were found to occur 4 to 6 area-equivalent nozzle diameters downstream from the nozzle exit. Comparison of convection velocity between the axisymmetric and offset cases show this same region as having the greatest reduction in convection velocity due to the offset, up to 20% reduction for the offset case compared to the axisymmetric case. These findings suggest this region along the centerline near the end of the potential core is an important area for noise generation with jets and contributes to the noise reductions seen from three-stream offset nozzles.
We report here some intriguing properties of fingering double diffusive convection turbulence, i.e. convection flow driven simultaneously by an unstable salinity gradient and a stable temperature gradient. Multiple equilibria can be established in such flow for the same control parameters, either by setting different initial scalar distribution or different evolution history. Transition between a single finger layer and multi-layer staircase can be abrupt and hysteresis. Unlike a deep finger layer, a model widely used in literature, finger interfaces within staircases show totally different tr…
The transition from deterministic to distributed chaos/turbulence at the increase of Rayleigh number (from $10^4$ to $10^8$) in Rayleigh-Bénard convection, controlled by generalized Birkhoff-Saffman invariant, has been studied using the results of direct numerical simulations. The applications of this approach to rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection, to stably stratified flows, and to observations in the atmosphere and in the solar photosphere have been briefly discussed.
Turbulence in the ionic migration and in the microfluidic electro-hydrodynamic convection (mixing) under constant and low-frequency external electric field has been studied using distributed chaos approach and notion of effective (turbulent) diffusivity. Results of corresponding laboratory experiments have been also used for this purpose. It is shown that for the migration and convection (mixing) under constant and low-frequency external electric field the turbulent power spectra have stretched exponential form $E(k) \propto \exp-(k/k_β)^{2/3}$. In the case of the microfluidic convection the d…
Natural convection is usually complicated by additional factors such as rotation, shear, radiative transfer, compressibility and electromagnetic fields (in the case of electro-conductive fluids). It is shown, using results of numerical simulations and measurements in atmospheric boundary layer and solar photosphere that strong stratification can transform turbulence into deterministic chaos with exponential spectral decay of kinetic energy. When the stratification becomes weaker the deterministic chaos is replaced by the distributed chaos with stretched exponential spectral decay controlled by…
Temporal and spatio-temporal (turbulence) distributed chaos in Bénard-Marangoni and Rayleigh-Bénard convection have been studied using results of laboratory experiments and direct numerical simulations in the terms of effective chaotic diffusivity (viscosity) and action. It is shown that for the both cases decaying part of the power spectra has stretched exponential form - for temporal spectrum $E(f) \propto \exp-(f/f_β)^{1/2}$ and for spatial spectrum $E(k) \propto \exp-(k/k_β)^{2/3}$, where the $f_β$ and $k_β$ represent low-frequency (large-scale) coherent oscillations.
The competition between turbulent convection and global rotation in planetary and stellar interiors governs the transport of heat and tracers, as well as magnetic-field generation. These objects operate in dynamical regimes ranging from weakly rotating convection to the `geostrophic turbulence' regime of rapidly rotating convection. However, the latter regime has remained elusive in the laboratory, despite a worldwide effort to design ever-taller rotating convection cells over the last decade. Building on a recent experimental approach where convection is driven radiatively, we report heat tra…
In this paper, we analyze the scaling of velocity structure functions of turbulent thermal convection. Using high-resolution numerical simulations, we show that the structure functions scale similar to those of hydrodynamic turbulence, with the scaling exponents in agreement with She and Leveque's predictions [Phys. Rev. Lett. 72, 336-339 (1994)]. The probability distribution functions of velocity increments are non-Gaussian with wide tails in the dissipative scales and become close to Gaussian in the inertial range. The tails of the probability distribution follow a stretched exponential. We …
The role of the moments of helicity distribution in rotating turbulence has been studied using the notion of helical distributed chaos. Results of the direct numerical simulations, laboratory experiments and geophysical observations have been used in this investigation. It is shown, in particular, that even for the cases when the global helicity is equal to zero at least even moments are usually non-zero (due to the appearance of the local spatial regions with strong negative and positive helicity) and can play a significant role in the rotating turbulence as adiabatic invariants. Rotating buo…
Double diffusive convection (DDC), which is the buoyancy driven flow with fluid density depending on two scalar components, is ubiquitous in many natural and engineering enviroments. Of great interests are scalers transfer rate and flow structures. Here we systematically investigate DDC flow between two horizontal plates, driven by an unstable salinity gradient and stabilized by a temperature gradient. Counterintuitively, when increasing the stabilizing temperature gradient, the salinity flux first increases, even though the velocity monotonically decreases, before it finally breaks down to th…
The mechanisms governing the transition to turbulence in natural convection boundary layers along strongly heated vertical walls remain neither very clear nor well understood, because of the lack of experiments and the difficulties of physical modelling. Our measurements bring experimental data focusing on this transition in quiescent air along radiating and conducting plates in the whole range of 2000 to 8000 W/m\^2 heating rate. The analysis of the time series obtained by sliding window cross-correlation thermoanemometry leads us to point out coherent turbulent structures on short heights th…
Turbulent convection plays a crucial role in many natural environments, ranging from Earth ocean, mantle and outer core, to various astrophysical systems. For such flows with extremely strong thermal driving, an ultimate scaling was proposed for the heat flux and velocity. Despite numerous experimental and numerical studies, a conclusive observation of the ultimate regime has not been reached yet. Here we show that the ultimate scaling can be perfectly realized once the thermal boundary layer is fully decoupled from the viscous boundary layer and locates inside the turbulent bulk. The heat flu…
We test the ability of a general low-dimensional model for turbulence to predict geometry-dependent dynamics of large-scale coherent structures, such as convection rolls. The model consists of stochastic ordinary differential equations, which are derived as a function of boundary geometry from the Navier-Stokes equations (Brown and Ahlers 2008). We test the model using Rayleigh-Bénard convection experiments in a cubic container. The model predicts a new mode in which the alignment of a convection roll switches between diagonals. We observe this mode with a measured switching rate within 30% of…
Numerical simulations of turbulent round jets, using explicit-filtered LES technique, are performed, for three different Reynolds numbers(Re = 3600, 88000, 400000), to understand the Reynolds number effect on subsonic jets with Mach number 0.9. Eigth-order compact schemes are used for spatial derivative estimation. Second order Runge-Kutta method is used for Time evolution of flow. One-parameter fourth-order compact filter is used for low-pass explicit filtering of transported variables. Decreased centreline axial velocity decay rate and reduced turbulence intensities are observed as jet Reyno…
We study the effects of polymer additives on turbulence generated by the ubiquitous Rayleigh-Taylor instability. Numerical simulations of complete viscoelastic models provide clear evidence that the heat transport is enhanced up to 50% with respect to the Newtonian case. This phenomenon is accompanied by a speed up of the mixing layer growth. We give a phenomenological interpretation of these results based on small-scale turbulent reduction induced by polymers.
For two-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection, classes of unstable, steady solutions were previously computed using numerical continuation (Waleffe, 2015; Sondak, 2015). The `primary' steady solution bifurcates from the conduction state at $Ra \approx 1708$, and has a characteristic aspect ratio (length/height) of approximately $2$. The primary solution corresponds to one pair of counterclockwise-clockwise convection rolls with a temperature updraft in between and an adjacent downdraft on the sides. By adjusting the horizontal length of the domain, (Waleffe, 2015; Sondak, 2015) also found ste…
In this paper, the properties of stably stratified turbulence (SST) and turbulent thermal convection are contrasted. A key difference between these flows is the sign of the kinetic energy feed by buoyancy, $\mathcal{F}_B$. For SST, $\mathcal{F}_B < 0$ due to its stable nature; consequently, the kinetic energy flux $Π_u(k)$ decreases with wavenumber $k$ that leads to a steep kinetic energy spectrum, $E_u(k) \sim k^{-11/5}$. Turbulent convection is unstable, hence $\mathcal{F}_B > 0$ that leads to an increase of $Π_u(k)$ with $k$; this increase however is marginal due to relatively weak buoyancy…
Due to large scale flow inhomogeneities and the effects of temperature, turbulence small-scale structure in thermal convection is still an active field of investigation, especially considering sophisticated Lagrangian statistics. Here we experimentally study Lagrangian pair dispersion (one of the canonical problems of Lagrangian turbulence) in a Rayleigh-Bénard convection cell. A sufficiently high temperature difference is imposed on a horizontal layer of fluid to observe a turbulent flow. We perform Lagrangian tracking of sub-millimetric particles on a large measurement volume including part …
If a fluid flow is driven by a weak Gaussian random force, the nonlinearity in the Navier-Stokes equations is negligibly small and the resulting velocity field obeys Gaussian statistics. Nonlinear effects become important as the driving becomes stronger and a transition occurs to turbulence with anomalous scaling of velocity increments and derivatives. This process has been described by V. Yakhot and D. A. Donzis, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 044501 (2017) for homogeneous and isotropic turbulence (HIT). In more realistic flows driven by complex physical phenomena, such as instabilities and nonlocal f…
We investigate the statistical properties of Rayleigh-Taylor turbulence in a convective cell of high aspect ratio, in which one transverse side is much smaller that the others. We show that the scale of confinement determines the Bolgiano scale of the system, which in the late stage of the evolution is characterized by the Kolmogorov-Obukhov and the Bolgiano-Obukhov phenomenology at small and large scales, respectively. The coexistence of these regimes is associated to a three to two-dimensional transition of the system which occurs when the width of the turbulent mixing layer becomes larger t…
It is shown that correlation function of the mean wind velocity generated by a turbulent thermal convection (Rayleigh number $Ra \sim 10^{11}$) exhibits exponential decay with a very long correlation time, while corresponding largest Lyapunov exponent is certainly positive. These results together with the reconstructed phase portrait indicate presence of chaotic component in the examined mean wind. Telegraph approximation is also used to study relative contribution of the chaotic and stochastic components to the mean wind fluctuations and an equilibrium between these components has been studie…
We report heat transfer and temperature profile measurements in laboratory experiments of rapidly rotating convection in water under intense thermal forcing (Rayleigh number $Ra$ as high as $\sim 10^{13}$) and unprecedentedly strong rotational influence (Ekman numbers $E$ as low as $10^{-8}$). Measurements of the mid-height vertical temperature gradient connect quantitatively to predictions from numerical models of asymptotically rapidly rotating convection, separating various flow phenomenologies. Past the limit of validity of the asymptotically-reduced models, we find novel behaviors in a re…
The effect of domain anisotropy on the inverse cascade occurring within the geostrophic turbulence regime of rapidly rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RRBC) is investigated. In periodic domains with square cross-section in the horizontal a domain-filling dipole state is present. For rectangular periodic domains a Kolmogorov-like flow consisting of a periodic array of alternating unidirectional jets with embedded vortices is observed, together with an underlying weak meandering transverse jet. Similar transitions occurring in weakly dissipative two-dimensional flows driven by externally impo…
Many geophysical and astrophysical phenomena are driven by turbulent fluid dynamics, containing behaviors separated by tens of orders of magnitude in scale. While direct simulations have made large strides toward understanding geophysical systems, such models still inhabit modest ranges of the governing parameters that are difficult to extrapolate to planetary settings. The canonical problem of rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection provides an alternate approach - isolating the fundamental physics in a reduced setting. Theoretical studies and asymptotically-reduced simulations in rotating convec…
We explore the laminar to turbulence transition of round jets at low Reynolds number (Re < 1000) using a novel experimental setup and linear stability theory (LST). The setup has a large domain and a low disturbance environment which increases the critical Re to approximately 500, permitting the appearance of a hitherto unknown puff-like instability (PFI). The instability is identified in the self-similar region of the jet through clean flow visualizations (FV) and further corroborated by particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. For 400< Re <700, the flow exhibits PFI embedded in a puff-…
In this paper we describe the design and implementation of TARANG, a pseudospectral code to simulate turbulent flows in fluids, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), convection, passive scalar, etc. We use the object-oriented features of C++ to abstract operations involved in the simulation. TARANG has been validated and used for solving problems in convection and MHD.
We show that the phase space of stratified turbulence mainly consists of two slow invariant manifolds with rich physics, embedded on a larger basin with fast evolution. A local invariant manifold in the vicinity of the fluid at equilibrium corresponds to waves, while a global invariant manifold corresponds to the onset of local convection. Using a reduced model derived from the Boussinesq equations, we propose that waves accumulate energy nonlinearly up to a point such that fluid elements escape from the local manifold and evolve fast to the global manifold, where kinetic energy can be more ef…
We find an instability resulting in generation of large-scale vorticity in a fast rotating small-scale turbulence or turbulent convection with inhomogeneous fluid density along the rotational axis in anelastic approximation. The large-scale instability causes excitation of two modes: (i) the mode with dominant vertical vorticity and with the mean velocity being independent of the vertical coordinate; (ii) the mode with dominant horizontal vorticity and with the mean momentum being independent of the vertical coordinate. The mode with the dominant vertical vorticity can be excited in a fast rot…
One of the most prominent dynamical features of turbulent, rapidly-rotating convection is the formation of large-scale coherent structures, driven by Reynolds stresses resulting from the small-scale convective flows. In spherical geometry, such structures consist of intense zonal flows that are invariant along the rotation axis. In planar geometry, long-lived, depth-invariant structures also form at large scales, but, in the absence of horizontal anisotropy, they consist of vortices that grow to the domain size. In this work, through the introduction of horizontal anisotropy into a numerical m…
We study the self-similarity and dissipation scalings of a turbulent planar jet and the theoretically implied mean flow scalings. Unlike turbulent wakes where such studies have already been carried out (Dairay et al. 2015; Obligado et al. 2016), this is a boundary- free turbulent shear flow where the local Reynolds number increases with distance from inlet. The Townsend-George theory revised by Dairay et al. (2015) is applied to turbulent planar jets. Only a few profiles need to be self-similar in this theory. The self- similarity of mean flow, turbulence dissipation, turbulent kinetic energy …
Turbulent and internal wave motions are important for the exchange of momentum, heat and suspended matter in the deep-sea which is generally stably stratified in density. Turbulence-generation models involve shear of vertical current differences that deforms the stratified waters, and convection that is drive by (unstable) buoyancy. Shear-generation is found more general in the well-stratified ocean-interior, while convection is known to occur near the sea-surface, e.g. via nighttime cooling. Far below the surface, the Western-Mediterranean Sea is very weakly stratified and offers opportunity …

Horizontally extended turbulent convection, termed mesoscale convection in natural systems, remains a challenge to investigate in both experiments and simulations. This is particularly so for very low molecular Prandtl numbers as in stellar convection and in Earth's outer core. The present study reports three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in square boxes of side length $L$ and height $H$ with the aspect ratio $Γ=L/H$ of 25, for Prandtl numbers that span almost 4 orders of magnitude, $10^{-3}\le Pr \le 7$, and Rayleigh numbers $10^5 \le Ra \le …
We investigate the large-scale influence of numerical noises as tiny artificial stochastic disturbances on a sustained turbulence. Using the two-dimensional (2D) turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection as an example, we numerically solve the NS equations, separately, by means of a traditional algorithm with double precision (marked by RKwD) and the so-called clean numerical simulation (CNS). The numerical simulation given by the RKwD is a mixture of the "true" physical solution and the "false" numerical noises that is random and can be regarded as a kind of artificial stochastic disturbances…
Hot luminous stars show a variety of phenomena in their photospheres and in their winds which still lack clear physical explanations at this time. Among these phenomena are non-thermal line broadening, line profile variability (LPVs), discrete absorption components (DACs), wind clumping and stochastically excited pulsations. Cantiello et al. (2009) argued that a convection zone close to the surface of hot, massive stars, could be responsible for some of these phenomena. This convective zone is caused by a peak in the opacity due to iron recombination and for this reason is referred as the "iro…
Modelling the sudden depressurisation of superheated liquids through nozzles is a challenge because the pressure drop causes rapid flash boiling of the liquid. The resulting jet usually demonstrates a wide range of structures, including ligaments and droplets, due to both mechanical and thermodynamic effects. As the simulation comprises increasingly numerous phenomena, the computational cost begins to increase. One way to moderate the additional cost is to use machine learning surrogacy for specific elements of the calculations. The present study presents a machine learning-assisted computatio…
What is the final state of turbulence when the driving parameter approaches to infinity? For thermal turbulence, in 1962, Kraichnan proposed a so-called ultimate scaling dependence of the heat transport (quantified by the Nusselt number $\text{Nu}$) on the Rayleigh number ($\text{Ra}$), which can be extrapolated to arbitrarily high $\text{Ra}$. The existence of Kraichnan ultimate scaling has been intensively debated in the past decades. In this work, using a supergravitational thermal convection system, with an effective gravity up to 100 times the Earth's gravity, both Rayleigh number and she…
We have developed a small, neutrally buoyant, wireless temperature sensor. Using a camera for optical tracking, we obtain simultaneous measurements of position and temperature of the sensor as it is carried along by the flow in Rayleigh-Bénard convection, at $Ra \sim 10^{10}$. We report on statistics of temperature, velocity, and heat transport in turbulent thermal convection. The motion of the sensor particle exhibits dynamics close to that of Lagrangian tracers in hydrodynamic turbulence. We also quantify heat transport in plumes, revealing self-similarity and extreme variations from plume t…
Vertically banded zonal jets are frequently observed in weakly or non-rotating stratified turbulence, with the quasi-biennial oscillation in the equatorial stratosphere and the ocean's equatorial deep jets being two examples. Explaining the formation of jets in stratified turbulence is a fundamental problem in geophysical fluid dynamics. Statistical state dynamics (SSD) provides powerful methods for analyzing turbulent systems exhibiting emergent organization, such as banded jets. In SSD, dynamical equations are written directly for the evolution of the turbulence statistics, enabling direct a…
Global spectral analysis (GSA) is used as a tool to test the accuracy of numerical methods with the help of canonical problems of convection and convection-diffusion equation which admit exact solutions. Similarly, events in turbulent flows computed by direct numerical simulation (DNS) are often calibrated with theoretical results of homogeneous isotropic turbulence due to Kolmogorov, as given in Turbulence -U. Frisch, Cambridge Univ. Press, UK (1995). However, numerical methods for the simulation of this problem are not calibrated, as by using GSA of convection and/or convection-diffusion equ…
Transition to hyperchaotic regimes in Rayleigh-Benard convection in a square periodicity cell is studied by three-dimensional numerical simulations. By fixing the Prandtl number at P=0.3 and varying the Rayleigh number as a control parameter, a bifurcation diagram is constructed where a route to hyperchaos involving quasiperiodic regimes with two and three incommensurate frequencies, multistability, chaotic intermittent attractors and a sequence of boundary and interior crises is shown. The three largest Lyapunov exponents exhibit a linear scaling with the Rayleigh number and are positive in t…
The Boussinesq model of convection in a flat layer with heating from below is considered. We analyze the effects of anisotropy caused by rapid rotation in physical and wave spaces and demonstrate the suppression of energy transfer by rotation. We also examine the structure of the wave triangle in nonlinear interaction. The range of parameters is adapted to the models of convection in the geodynamo.
Combined measurements of velocity components and temperature in a turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection flow at a low Prandtl number of $\mathit{Pr}= 0.029$ and Rayleigh numbers between $10^6 \le \mathit{Ra} \le 6 \times 10^7$ are conducted in a series of experiments with durations of more than a thousand free-fall time units. Multiple crossing ultrasound beam lines and an array of thermocouples at mid-height allow for a detailed analysis and characterization of the complex three-dimensional dynamics of the single large-scale circulation (LSC) roll in the cylindrical convection cell of unit asp…
We present results from a numerical study of particle dispersion in the weakly nonlinear regime of Rayleigh-Bénard convection of a fluid with Prandtl number around unity, where bi-stability between ideal straight convection rolls and weak turbulence in the form of Spiral Defect Chaos exists. While Lagrangian pair statistics has become a common tool for studying fully developed turbulent flows at high Reynolds numbers, we show that key characteristics of mass transport can also be found in convection systems that show no or weak turbulence. Specifically, for short times, we find Richardson-like…
