We make a complete analysis of the controllability properties from the exterior of the (possible) strong damping wave equation with the fractional Laplace operator subject to the nonhomogeneous Dirichlet type exterior condition. In the first part, we show that if $0<s<1$, $Ω\subset\RR^N$ ($N\ge 1$) is a bounded Lipschitz domain and the parameter $δ> 0$, then there is no control function $g$ such that the following system \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_{tt} + (-Δ)^{s} u + δ(-Δ)^{s} u_{t}=0 & \mbox{ in }\; Ω\times(0,T),\\ u=gχ_{\mathcal O\times (0,T)} &\mbox{ in }\; (\Omc)\times (0,T) ,\\ u(\cdot,0) = u_0, u_t(\cdot,0) = u_1 &\mbox{ in }\; Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} is exact or null controllable at time $T>0$. In the second part, we prove that for every $δ\ge 0$ and $0<s<1$, the system is indeed approximately controllable for any $T>0$ and $g\in \mathcal D(\mathcal O\times(0,T))$, where $\mathcal O\subset\Omc$ is any non-empty open set.
The three concepts of exact, null and approximate controllabilities are analyzed from the exterior of the Moore--Gibson--Thompson equation associated with the fractional Laplace operator subject to the nonhomogeneous Dirichlet type exterior condition.
We consider the null controllability problem from the exterior for the one dimensional heat equation on the interval $(0,1)$ associated with the fractional Laplace operator $(-\partial_x^2)^s$, where $0<s<1$. We show that there is a control function which is localized in a non-empty open set $\mathcal{O}\subset \left(\mathbb{R}\setminus(0,1)\right)$, that is, at the exterior of the interval $(0,1)$, such that the system is null controllable at any time $T>0$ if and only if $\frac 12<s<1$.
We consider the initial boundary value problem in exterior domain for strongly damped wave equations with power type nonlinearity |u|^p. We will establish blow-up results under some conditions on the initial data and the exponent p.
We consider the initial boundary value problem in exterior domain for semilinear wave equations with power-type nonlinearity |u| p. We will establish blow-up results when p is less than or equal to Strauss' exponent which is the same one for the whole space case R n .
In this paper, we consider the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the wave equation with space-dependent damping in an exterior domain. We prove that when the damping is effective, the solution is approximated by that of the corresponding heat equation as time tends to infinity. Our proof is based on semigroup estimates for the corresponding heat equation and weighted energy estimates for the damped wave equation. The optimality of the decay late for solutions is also established.
This paper is concerned with weighted energy estimates and diffusion phenomena for the initial-boundary problem of the wave equation with space-dependent damping term in an exterior domain. In this analysis, an elliptic problem was introduced by Todorova and Yordanov. This attempt was quite useful when the coefficient of the damping term is radially symmetric. In this paper, by modifying their elliptic problem, we establish weighted energy estimates and diffusion phenomena even when the coefficient of the damping term is not radially symmetric.
The purpose of this work is to investigate the exponential stability of a second order coupled wave equations by laplacian with one locally internal viscous damping. Firstly, using a unique continuation theorem combined with a Carleman estimate, we prove that our system is strongly stable without any geometric condition. Secondly, using a combination of the multiplier techniques and the frequency domain approach, we show that our system is exponentially stable under \textbf{(PMGC)} condition on the damping region without any restriction on wave propagation speed (i.e whether the two wave equat…
Blow-up and lifespan estimate for the generalized tricomi equation with the scale-invariant damping and time derivative nonlinearity on exterior domain
We study the controllability to trajectories, under positivity constraints on the control or the state, of a one-dimensional heat equation involving the fractional Laplace operator $ (-\partial_x^2)^s$ (with $0<s<1$) on the interval $(-1,1)$. Our control function is localized in an open set $\mathcal O$ in the exterior of $(-1,1)$, that is, $\mathcal O\subset (\mathbb{R} \setminus (-1,1))$. We show that there exists a minimal (strictly positive) time $T_{\rm min}$ such that the fractional heat dynamics can be controlled from any initial datum in $L^2(-1,1)$ to a positive trajectory through the…
In this paper we study the behavior of the total energy and the $L^2$-norm of solutions of two coupled hyperbolic equations by velocities in exterior domains. Only one of the two equations is directly damped by a localized damping term. We show that, when the damping set contains the coupling one and the coupling term is effective at infinity and on captive region, then the total energy decays uniformly and the $L^2$-norm of smooth solutions is bounded. In the case of two Klein-Gordon equations with equal speeds we deduce an exponential decay of the energy.

We study the approximate and mean approximate controllability properties of fractional partial differential equations associated with the so-called Hilfer type time-fractional derivative and a non-negative selfadjoint operator $A_B$ with a compact resolvent on $L^2(Ω)$, where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ ($N\ge 1$) is a bounded open set. More precisely, we show that if $0\leν\le 1$, $0<μ\le 1$ and $Ω\subset\mathbb R^N$ is a bounded open set, then the system $$\mathbb D_t^{μ,ν} u+A_Bu=f|_ω\;\; \mbox{ in }\; Ω\times (0,T),\,\, (\mathbb I_t^{(1-ν)(1-μ)}u)(\cdot,0)=u_0 \mbox{ in }\;Ω,$$ is approximately…
We investigate the internal controllability of the wave equation with structural damping on the one dimensional torus. We assume that the control is acting on a moving point or on a moving small interval with a constant velocity. We prove that the null controllability holds in some suitable Sobolev space and after a fixed positive time independent of the initial conditions.
We prove the semi-global controllability and stabilization of the $(1+1)$-dimensional wave maps equation with spatial domain $\mathbb{S}^1$ and target $\mathbb{S}^k$. First we show that damping stabilizes the system when the energy is strictly below the threshold $2π$, where harmonic maps appear as obstruction for global stabilization. Then, we adapt an iterative control procedure to get low-energy exact controllability of the wave maps equation. This result is optimal in the case $k=1$.
This paper is concerned with weighted energy estimates for solutions to wave equation $\partial_t^2u-Δu + a(x)\partial_tu=0$ with space-dependent damping term $a(x)=|x|^{-α}$ $(α\in [0,1))$ in an exterior domain $Ω$ having a smooth boundary. The main result asserts that the weighted energy estimates with weight function like polymonials are given and these decay rate are almost sharp, even when the initial data do not have compact support in $Ω$. The crucial idea is to use special solution of $\partial_t u=|x|^αΔu$ including Kummer's confluent hypergeometric functions.
This paper addresses a wave equation on a exterior domain in R^{d}(d odd) with nonlinear time dependent dissipation. Under a microlocal geometric condition we prove that the decay rates of the local energy functional are obtained by solving a nonlinear non-autonomous differential equation.
Let $\Om\subset\RR^N$ a bounded domain with a Lipschitz continuous boundary. We study the controllability of the space-time fractional diffusion equation \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \mathbb D_t^αu+(-Δ)^su=0\;\;&\mbox{ in }\;(0,T)\timesΩ\\ u=g &\mbox{ in }\;(0,T)\times(\RR^N\setminusΩ)\\ u(0,\cdot)=u_0&\mbox{ in }\;Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $u=u(t,x)$ is the state to be controlled and $g=g(t,x)$ is the control function which is localized in a subset $\mathcal O$ of $\Omc$. Here, $0<α\le 1$, $0<s<1$ and $T>0$ be real numbers. After giving an explicit representation of solutions, w…
We consider the observability problem for non-autonomous evolution systems (i.e., the operators governing the system depend on time). We introduce an averaged Hautus condition and prove that for skew-adjoint operators it characterizes exact observability. Next, we extend this to more general class of operators under a growth condition on the associated evolution family. We give an application to the Schrödinger equation with time dependent potential and the damped wave equation with a time dependent damping coefficient.
The global existence for semilinear wave equations with space-dependent critical damping $\partial_t^2u-Δu+\frac{V_0}{|x|}\partial_t u=f(u)$ in an exterior domain is dealt with, where $f(u)=|u|^{p-1}u$ and $f(u)=|u|^p$ are in mind. Existence and non-existence of global-in-time solutions are discussed. To obtain global existence, a weighted energy estimate for the linear problem is crucial. The proof of such a weighted energy estimate contains an alternative proof of energy estimates established by Ikehata--Todorova--Yordanov [J.\ Math.\ Soc.\ Japan (2013), 183--236] but this clarifies the prec…
We investigate the initial-value problem for the semilinear plate equation containing localized strong damping, localized weak damping and nonlocal nonlinearity. We prove that if nonnegative damping coefficients are strictly positive almost everywhere in the exterior of some ball and the sum of these coefficients is positive a.e. in $% \mathbb{R} ^{n}$, then the semigroup generated by the considered problem possesses a global attractor in $H^{2}\left( \mathbb{R} ^{n}\right) \times L^{2}\left( \mathbb{R} ^{n}\right) $. We also establish boundedness of this attractor in $ H^{3}\left( \mathbb{R} …
We give a short proof of the existence of a small piece of null infinity for $(3+1)$-dimensional spacetimes evolving from asymptotically flat initial data as solutions of the Einstein vacuum equations. We introduce a modification of the standard wave coordinate gauge in which all non-physical metric degrees of freedom have strong decay at null infinity. Using a formulation of the gauge-fixed Einstein vacuum equations which implements constraint damping, we establish this strong decay regardless of the validity of the constraint equations. On a technical level, we use notions from geometric sin…
We consider damped wave (resp. Schr{ö}dinger and plate) equations driven by a hypoelliptic "sum of squares" operator L on a compact manifold and a damping function b(x). We assume the Chow-Rashevski-H{ö}rmander condition at rank k (at most k Lie brackets needed to span the tangent space) together with analyticity of M and the coefficients of L. We prove decay of the energy at rate $log(t)^{-1/k}$ (resp. $log(t)^{-2/k}$ ) for data in the domain of the generator of the associated group. We show that this decay is optimal on a family of Grushin-type operators. This result follows from a perturbat…
We address the decay rates of the energy for the damped wave equation when the damping coefficient $b$ does not satisfy the Geometric Control Condition (GCC). First, we give a link with the controllability of the associated Schrödinger equation. We prove in an abstract setting that the observability of the Schrödinger group implies that the semigroup associated to the damped wave equation decays at rate $1/\sqrt{t}$ (which is a stronger rate than the general logarithmic one predicted by the Lebeau Theorem). Second, we focus on the 2-dimensional torus. We prove that the best decay one can expec…
We consider the total energy decay together with L^2-bound of the solution itself of the Cauchy problem for wave equations with a localized damping and a short-range potential. We treat it in the one dimensional Euclidean space R. We adopt a simple multiplier method to study them. In this case, it is essential that the compactness of the support of the initial data is not assumed. Since this problem is treated in the whole space, the Poincare and Hardy inequalities are not available as is developed in the exterior domain case. For compensating such a lack of useful tools, the potential plays a…
In this paper, we study the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a locally distributed damping on a smooth bounded domain as well as on the whole space and on an exterior domain. We first construct approximate solutions using the theory of monotone operators. We show that approximate solutions decay exponentially fast in the $L^2$-sense by using the multiplier technique and a unique continuation property. Then, we prove the global existence as well as the $L^2$-decay of solutions for the original model by passing to the limit and using a weak lower semicontinuity argument, respective…

In this article, we prove the exponential stabilization of the semilinear wave equation with a damping effective in a zone satisfying the geometric control condition only. The nonlinearity is assumed to be subcritical, defocusing and analytic. The main novelty compared to previous results, is the proof of a unique continuation result in large time for some undamped equation. The idea is to use an asymptotic smoothing effect proved by Hale and Raugel in the context of dynamical systems. Then, once the analyticity in time is proved, we apply a unique continuation result with partial analyticity …
