We study the coherent dynamics of localized excitons in 100-periods of 2.5 nm thick (In,Ga)N/GaN quantum wells with 7.5% indium concentration, measured with spectroscopic resolution through two-pulse and three-pulse photon echoes at the temperature of 1.5 K. A long-lived coherent exciton dynamics is observed in the (In,Ga)N quantum wells: When the laser photon energy is tuned across the 43 meV-wide inhomogeneously broadened resonance line, the coherence time T2 varies between 45 and 255 ps, increasing with stronger exciton localization. The corresponding narrow homogeneous linewidths ranging from 5.2 to 29 μeV as well as the relatively weak exciton-phonon interaction (0.8 μeV/K) confirm a strong, quantum dot-like exciton localization in a static disordered potential inside the (In,Ga)N quantum well layers.
We investigate the demonstration and quantification of the strong coupling between excitons and guided photons in a GaN slab waveguide. The dispersions of waveguide polaritons are measured from T=6~K to 300~K through gratings. They are carefully analyzed within four models based on different assumptions, in order to assess the strong coupling regime. We prove that the guided photons and excitons are strongly coupled at all investigated temperatures, with a small $(11 \%)$ dependence on the temperature. However the values of the Rabi splitting strongly vary among the four models: the "coupled o…
The strong Coulomb forces in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides ensure that optical excitation of band electrons gives rise to Wannier-Mott excitonic states, each of which can be conceptualized as a composite of a Gaussian wavepacket corresponding to center-of-mass motion and an orbital state corresponding to the motion of the electron and hole about the center-of-mass. Here, we show that at low temperature in monolayer MoS2, given quasi-localized excitons and consequently a significant inter-exciton spacing, the excitons undergo dipole-dipole interaction and annihilate one another in …
Transition-metal dichalcogenide heterostructures exhibit moiré patterns that spatially modulate the electronic structure across the material's plane. For certain material pairs, this modulation acts as a potential landscape with deep, trigonally symmetric wells capable of localizing interlayer excitons, forming periodic arrays of quantum emitters. Here, we study these moiré localized exciton states and their optical properties. By numerically solving the two-body problem for an interacting electron-hole pair confined by a trigonal potential, we compute the localized exciton spectra for differe…
We have closely examined the emission spectrum at the heavy-hole exciton resonance in a high-quality GaAs multi-quantum well (MQW) sample using picosecond excitation-correlation photoluminescence (ECPL) spectroscopy. Dynamics of the ECPL signal at low and high energy sides of the excitonic photoluminescence (PL) peak shows complementary behavior. The ECPL signal is positive (negative) below (above) the PL peak and it changes sign within a narrow band of energy lying between excitonic absorption and emission peaks. The energy at which this sign change takes place is interpreted as the excitonic…
We study spatial photoluminescence characteristics of neutral and charged excitons across extended monolayer MoS$_2$ synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. Using two-dimensional hyperspectral photoluminescence mapping at cryogenic temperatures we identify regions with increased emission from charged excitons associated with both spin-orbit split valence subbands. Such regions are attributed to unintentional doping at defect sites with excess charge that bind neutral excitons to form defect-pinned trions. Our findings imply comparable timescales for the formation, relaxation, and radiative d…
InxGa1-xN disks in GaN nanowires (DINWs) have emerged as a viable technology for on-chip tunable visible spectrum emission without the use of a phosphor. Here we present a study of the optical emission and absorption dynamics in DINWs that incorporates the important role of background disorder states. We show that the optical emission in the system is dominated by quantum-confined excitons, however the exci-tons are coupled to a large density of background disorder states. Rapid non-radiative decay (compared to other decay rates such as spontaneous emission) from disorder states into excitons …
The Mott transition from a dipolar excitonic liquid to an electron-hole plasma is demonstrated in a wide GaN/(Al,Ga)N quantum well at $T=7$K by means of spatially-resolved magneto-photoluminescence spectroscopy. Increasing optical excitation density we drive the system from the excitonic state, characterized by a diamagnetic behavior and thus a quadratic energy dependence on the magnetic field, to the unbound electron-hole state, characterized by a linear shift of the emission energy with the magnetic field. The complexity of the system requires to take into account both the density-dependence…
Semiconductor heterostructures based on layered two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) interfaced to gallium nitride (GaN) are excellent material systems to realize broadband light emitters and absorbers. The surface properties of the polar semiconductor, such as GaN are dominated by interface phonons, thus the optical properties of the vertical heterostructure depend strongly on the interface exciton-phonon coupling. The origin and activation of different Raman modes in the heterostructure due to coupling between interfacial phonons and optically generated carriers in a monola…
We propose a way to directly excite compact localized condensates in a nearly flat band of the exciton-polariton Lieb lattice by short Laguerre-Gaussian pulses and investigate the dynamics of these condensates in the presence of repulsive polariton-polariton interaction and distributed losses in the lattice. The evolution of a low-density compact polariton condensate shows fast Rabi oscillations between its excitonic and photonic components, with slow beatings of the Rabi oscillation amplitude. Both oscillations and beatings are suppressed at higher condensate densities due to polariton-polari…
We demonstrate a new localized excitonic state in patterned monolayer 2D semiconductors. This state is not associated with lattice disorder but is extrinsic, i.e. results from external molecules on the material surface. The signature of an exciton associated with that state is observed in the photoluminescence spectrum after electron beam exposure of several 2D semiconductors. The localized state, which is distinguished by non-linear power dependence, survives up to room temperature and is patternable down to 20 nm resolution. We probe the response of the new exciton to the changes of electron…
We study optically the coherent evolution of trions and excitons in a $δ$-doped 3.5 nm-thick ZnO/Zn$_{0.91}$Mg$_{0.09}$O multiple quantum well by means of time-resolved four-wave mixing at temperature of 1.5~K. Employing spectrally narrow picosecond laser pulses in the $χ^{(3)}$ regime allows us to address differently localized trion and exciton states, thereby avoiding many-body interactions and excitation-induced dephasing. The signal in the form of photon echoes from the negatively charged A excitons (T$_\text{A}$, trions) decays with coherence times varying from 8 up to 60~ps, depending on…
We analyze the potential of the $c$-plane InGaN/GaN quantum dots for polarization entangled photon emission by means of an atomistic many-body framework. Special attention is paid to the impact of random alloy fluctuations on the excitonic fine structure and the excitonic binding energy. Our calculations show that $c$-plane InGaN/GaN quantum dots are ideal candidates for high temperature entangled photon emission as long as the underlying $C_{3v}$-symmetry is preserved. However, when assuming random alloy fluctuations in the dot, our atomistic calculations reveal that while the large excitonic…
Covalent functionalization of semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes (CNT) introduces new photoluminescent emitting states. Theses states are spatially localized at around functionalization sites and strongly red-shifted relative to the emission commonly observed from the nanotube band-edge exciton state. A particularly important feature of these localized exciton states is that, because the exciton is no longer free to diffusively sample photoluminescent quenching sites along the CNT length, its lifetime is significantly extended. We have recently demonstrated that an important relaxatio…
Disorder derived from defects or strain in monolayer TMDs can lead to a dramatic change in the physical behavior of the interband excitations, producing inhomogeneous spectral broadening and localization; leading to radiative lifetime increase. In this study, we have modeled the disorder in the surface of the sample through a randomized potential in monolayer WSe2. We show that this model allows us to simulate the spectra of localized exciton states as well as their radiative lifetime. In this context, we give an in depth study of the influence of the disorder potential parameters on the optic…
Localized excitons play a vital role in the optical response of monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides and can be exploited as single photon sources for quantum information technology. While the optical properties of such localized excitons are vastly studied, the ultrafast capture process of delocalized excitons into localized potentials is largely unexplored. We perform quantum kinetic calculations of exciton capture via acoustic and optical phonons showing that efficient capture takes place on an ultrafast time scale. The polaron formation in the low-temperature limit leads to highe…
Single-photon emitters play a key role in present and emerging quantum technologies. Several recent measurements have established monolayer WSe$_2$ as a promising candidate for a reliable single photon source. The origin and underlying microscopic processes have remained, however, largely elusive. We present a multi-scale tight-binding simulation for the optical spectra of WSe$_2$ under non-uniform strain and in the presence of point defects employing the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Strain locally shifts excitonic energy levels into the band gap where they overlap with localized intra-gap defect …
An overview on photon echo spectroscopy under resonant excitation of the exciton complexes in semiconductor nanostructures is presented. The use of four-wave-mixing technique with the pulsed excitation and heterodyne detection allowed us to measure the coherent response of the system with the picosecond time resolution. It is shown that, for resonant selective pulsed excitation of the localized exciton complexes, the coherent signal is represented by the photon echoes due to the inhomogeneous broadening of the optical transitions. In case of resonant excitation of the trions or donor-bound exc…
Point defects, local strain or impurities can crucially impact the optical response of atomically thin two-dimensional materials as they offer trapping potentials for excitons. These trapped excitons appear in photoluminescence spectra as new resonances below the bright exciton that can even be exploited for single photon emission. While large progress has been made in deterministically introducing defects, only little is known about their impact on the optical fingerprint of 2D materials. Here, based on a microscopic approach we reveal direct signatures of localized bright excitonic states as…
Indirect excitons (IX) in semiconductor heterostructures are bosons, which can cool below the temperature of quantum degeneracy and can be effectively controlled by voltage and light. IX quantum Bose gases and IX devices were explored in GaAs heterostructures where an IX range of existence is limited to low temperatures due to low IX binding energies. IXs in van der Waals transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterostructures are characterized by large binding energies giving the opportunity for exploring excitonic quantum gases and for creating excitonic devices at high temperatures. TMD hete…
We report on experimental studies of the effects induced by surface acoustic waves on the optical emission dynamics of GaN/InGaN nanowire quantum dots. We employ stroboscopic optical excitation with either time-integrated or time-resolved photoluminescence detection. In the absence of the acoustic wave, the emission spectra reveal signatures originated from the recombination of neutral exciton and biexciton confined in the probed nanowire quantum dot. When the nanowire is perturbed by the propagating acoustic wave, the embedded quantum dot is periodically strained and its excitonic transitions…

Manipulating and reserving the valley pseudospin of excitons is one core aim in the two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). However, due to the strong electron-hole exchange and spin-orbit coupling interactions, the exciton recombination lifetime is subject to picosecond timescale intrinsically, and the valley polarization is hardly modulated by a moderate magnetic field. It is fortunate that interlayer and defect-localized excitons promise to overcome these difficulties by suppressing the above interactions. Here we clearly reveal that the valley polarization can be reversed …
While photons in free space barely interact, matter can mediate interactions between them resulting in optical nonlinearities. Such interactions at the single-quantum level result in an on-site photon repulsion, crucial for photon-based quantum information processing and for realizing strongly interacting many-body states of light. Here, we report repulsive dipole-dipole interactions between electric field tuneable, localized interlayer excitons in MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterobilayer. The presence of a single, localized exciton with an out-of-plane, non-oscillating dipole moment increases the energ…
Quantum dots (QDs) based on III-nitride semiconductors are promising for single photon emission at non-cryogenic temperatures due to their large exciton binding energies. Here, we demonstrate GaN QD single photon emitters operating at 300 K with $g^{(2)}(0) = 0.17 \pm 0.08$ under continuous wave excitation. At this temperature, single photon emission rates up to $6\times10^6 \, \text{s}^{-1}$ are reached while $g^{(2)}(0) \leq 0.5$ is maintained. Our results are achieved for GaN QDs embedded in a planar AlN layer grown on silicon, representing a promising pathway for future interlinkage with o…
Excitonic emission from atomically precise graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) synthesised on a metal surface is probed with atomic-scale spatial resolution using a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) approach. A STM-based strategy to transfer the GNRs to a partially insulating surface is used to prevent light emission quenching of the ribbons by the metal substrate. Sub-nanometer resolved STM-induced fluorescence spectra reveal emission from localized dark excitons build upon the topological end states of the GNRs. A low frequency vibronic emission comb whose characteristics change with the GNR lengt…
In monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, quantum emitters are associated with localized strain that can be deterministically applied to create designer nano-arrays of single photon sources. Despite an overwhelming empirical correlation with local strain, the nanoscale interplay between strain, excitons, defects and local crystalline structure that gives rise to these quantum emitters is poorly understood. Here, we combine room-temperature nano-optical imaging and spectroscopy of excitons in nanobubbles of localized strain in monolayer WSe2 with atomistic structural models to elucidate ho…
