In this paper, we consider the problem of decomposing the augmented cube $AQ_n$ into two spanning, regular, connected and pancyclic subgraphs. We prove that for $ n \geq 4$ and $ 2n - 1 = n_1 + n_2 $ with $ n_1, n_2 \geq 2,$ the augmented cube $ AQ_n$ can be decomposed into two spanning subgraphs $ H_1$ and $ H_2$ such that each $ H_i$ is $n_i$-regular and $n_i$-connected. Moreover, $H_i$ is $4$-pancyclic if $ n_i \geq 3.$
An $n$-vertex graph is called pancyclic if it contains a cycle of length $t$ for all $3 \leq t \leq n$. In this paper, we study pancyclicity of random graphs in the context of resilience, and prove that if $p \gg n^{-1/2}$, then the random graph $G(n,p)$ a.a.s. satisfies the following property: Every Hamiltonian subgraph of $G(n,p)$ with more than $(1/2 + o(1)){n \choose 2}p$ edges is pancyclic. This result is best possible in two ways. First, the range of $p$ is asymptotically tight; second, the proportion 1/2 of edges cannot be reduced. Our theorem extends a classical theorem of Bondy, and i…
A graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is Hamiltonian if it contains a spanning cycle, and pancyclic if it contains cycles of all lengths from 3 to $n$. In 1984, Fan presented a degree condition involving every pair of vertices at distance two for a 2-connected graph to be Hamiltonian. Motivated by Fan's result, we say that an induced subgraph $H$ of $G$ is $f_1$-heavy if for every pair of vertices $u,v\in V(H)$, $d_{H}(u,v)=2$ implies $\max\{d(u),d(v)\}\geq (n+1)/2$. For a given graph $R$, $G$ is called $R$-$f_1$-heavy if every induced subgraph of $G$ isomorphic to $R$ is $f_1$-heavy. In this paper we s…
A graph $G$ on $m$ vertices is pancyclic if it contains cycles of length $l$, $3\leq l \leq m$ as subgraphs in $G$. The complete graph $K_{9}$ on 9 vertices with a cycle $C_{9}$ of length 9 deleted from $K_{9}$ is denoted by $(K_{9}-C_{9})$. In this paper, we prove that $(K_{9}-C_{9})^{n}$, the Cartesian product of $(K_{9}-C_{9})$ taken $n$ times, is pancyclic.
Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex graph with $n\ge 3$. A classic result of Dirac from 1952 asserts that $G$ is hamiltonian if $δ(G)\ge n/2$. Dirac's theorem is one of the most influential results in the study of hamiltonicity and by now there are many related known results\,(see, e.g., J. A. Bondy, Basic Graph Theory: Paths and Circuits, Chapter 1 in: {\it Handbook of Combinatorics Vol.1}). A {\it Halin graph} is a planar graph consisting of two edge-disjoint subgraphs: a spanning tree of at least 4 vertices and with no vertex of degree 2, and a cycle induced on the set of the leaves of the spanning tr…
The research in the present paper was motivated by the conjecture of Ryjáček that every locally connected graph is weakly pancyclic. For a connected locally connected graph $G$ of order at least $3$, our results are as follows: If $G$ is $(K_1+(K_1\cup K_2))$-free, then $G$ is weakly pancyclic. If $G$ is $(K_1+(K_1\cup K_2))$-free, then $G$ is fully cycle extendable if and only if $2δ(G)\geq n(G)$. If $G$ is $\{ K_1+K_1+\bar{K}_3,K_1+P_4\}$-free or $\{ K_1+K_1+\bar{K}_3,K_1+(K_1\cup P_3)\}$-free, then $G$ is fully cycle extendable. If $G$ is distinct from $K_1+K_1+\bar{K}_3$ and $\{ K_1+P_4,K_…
A path in the hypercube $Q_n$ is said to be a geodesic if no two of its edges are in the same direction. Let $G$ be a subgraph of $Q_n$ with average degree $d$. How long a geodesic must $G$ contain? We show that $G$ must contain a geodesic of length $d$. This result, which is best possible, strengthens a theorem of Feder and Subi. It is also related to the `antipodal colourings' conjecture of Norine.
We consider the problem of maximising the largest eigenvalue of subgraphs of the hypercube $Q_d$ of a given order. We believe that in most cases, Hamming balls are maximisers, and our results support this belief. We show that the Hamming balls of radius $o(d)$ have largest eigenvalue that is within $1 + o(1)$ of the maximum value. We also prove that Hamming balls with fixed radius maximise the largest eigenvalue exactly, rather than asymptotically, when $d$ is sufficiently large. Our proofs rely on the method of compressions.
Let $Q_n$ denote the graph of the $n$-dimensional cube with vertex set $\{0,1\}^n$ in which two vertices are adjacent if they differ in exactly one coordinate. Suppose $G$ is a subgraph of $Q_n$ with average degree at least $d$. How long a path can we guarantee to find in $G$? Our aim in this paper is to show that $G$ must contain an exponentially long path. In fact, we show that if $G$ has minimum degree at least $d$ then $G$ must contain a path of length $2^d-1$. Note that this bound is tight, as shown by a $d$-dimensional subcube of $Q_n$. We also obtain the slightly stronger result that $G…
The Fibonacci cube of dimension n, denoted as $Γ$ n , is the subgraph of n-cube Q n induced by vertices with no consecutive 1's. In this short note we prove that asymptotically all vertices of $Γ$ n are covered by a maximum set of disjoint subgraphs isomorphic to Q k , answering an open problem proposed in [2].
A binary string $f$ is a factor of string $u$ if $f$ appears as a sequence of $|f|$ consecutive bits of $u$, where $|f|$ denotes the length of $f$. Generalized Fibonacci cube $Q_{d}(f)$ is the graph obtained from the $d$-cube $Q_{d}$ by removing all vertices that contain a given binary string $f$ as a factor. A binary string $f$ is called good if $Q_{d}(f)$ is an isometric subgraph of $Q_{d}$ for all $d\geq1$, it is called bad otherwise. The index of a binary string $f$, denoted by $B(f)$, is the smallest integer $d$ such that $Q_{d}(f)$ is not an isometric subgraph of $Q_{d}$. Ilić, Klavžar a…
We give another version of Huang's proof that an induced subgraph of the n-dimensional cube graph containing over half the vertices has maximal degree at least $\sqrt{n}$, which implies the Sensitivity Conjecture. This argument uses Clifford algebras of positive definite signature in a natural way. We also prove a weighted version of the result.
The {\em Fibonacci cube} of dimension $n$, denoted as $Γ\_n$, is the subgraph of $n$-cube $Q\_n$ induced by vertices with no consecutive 1's. We study the maximum number of disjoint subgraphs in $Γ\_n$ isomorphic to $Q\_k$, and denote this number by $q\_k(n)$. We prove several recursive results for $q\_k(n)$, in particular we prove that $q\_{k}(n) = q\_{k-1}(n-2) + q\_{k}(n-3)$. We also prove a closed formula in which $q\_k(n)$ is given in terms of Fibonacci numbers, and finally we give the generating function for the sequence $\{q\_{k}(n)\}\_{n=0}^{ \infty}$.
The {\em Fibonacci cube} of dimension $n$, denoted as $Γ\_n$, is the subgraph of the $n$-cube $Q\_n$ induced by vertices with no consecutive 1's. In an article of 2016 Ashrafi and his co-authors proved the non-existence of perfect codes in $Γ\_n$ for $n\geq 4$. As an open problem the authors suggest to consider the existence of perfect codes in generalization of Fibonacci cubes. The most direct generalization is the family $Γ\_n(1^s)$ of subgraphs induced by strings without $1^s$ as a substring where $s\geq 2$ is a given integer. We prove the existence of a perfect code in $Γ\_n(1^s)$ for $n=2…
The Fibonacci cube $Γ_n$ is the subgraph of the hypercube induced by the binary strings that contain no two consecutive 1's. The Lucas cube $Λ_n$ is obtained from $Γ_n$ by removing vertices that start and end with 1. We characterize maximal induced hypercubes in $Γ_n$ and $Λ_n$ and deduce for any $p\leq n$ the number of maximal $p$-dimensional hypercubes in these graphs.
The Fibonacci cube of dimension n, denoted as $Γ$ n , is the subgraph of the n-cube 5 Q n induced by vertices with no consecutive 1's. Ashrafi and his co-authors proved the non-existence of perfect codes in $Γ$ n for n $\ge$ 4. As an open problem the authors suggest to consider the existence of perfect codes in generalizations of Fibonacci cubes. The most direct generalization is the family $Γ$ n (1 s) of subgraphs induced by strings without 1 s as a substring where s $\ge$ 2 is a given integer. In a precedent work 10 we proved the existence of a perfect code in $Γ$ n (1 s) for n = 2 p -- 1 an…
Let Q_n be the graph of n times n times n cube with all non-decreasing diagonals (including the facial ones) in its constituent unit cubes. Suppose that a subset S of V(Q_n) separates the left side of the cube from the right side. We show that S induces a subgraph of tree-width at least n/sqrt{18}-1. We use a generalization of this claim to prove that the vertex set of Q_n cannot be partitioned to two parts, each of them inducing a subgraph of bounded tree-width.
We prove that a connected bipartite graph G is a partial cube if and only if the set of attaching points of any copoint of G is convex. A consequence of this result is that any connected bipartite graph with pre-hull number at most 1 is a partial cube. We show that the class of partial cubes with pre-hull number at most 1 is closed under gated subgraphs, gated amalgams and cartesian products.
Let $\mathcal S$ be a family of subsets of a set $X$ of cardinality $m$ and $\text{VC-dim}(\mathcal S)$ be the Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension of $\mathcal S$. Haussler, Littlestone, and Warmuth (Inf. Comput., 1994) proved that if $G_1(\mathcal S)=(V,E)$ is the subgraph of the hypercube $Q_m$ induced by $\mathcal S$ (called the 1-inclusion graph of $\mathcal S$), then $\frac{|E|}{|V|}\le \text{VC-dim}({\mathcal S})$. Haussler (J. Combin. Th. A, 1995) presented an elegant proof of this inequality using the shifting operation. In this note, we adapt the shifting technique to prove that if $\mathca…
We study a family of graphs related to the $n$-cube. The middle cube graph of parameter $k$ is the subgraph of $Q_{2k-1}$ induced by the set of vertices whose binary representation has either $k-1$ or $k$ number of ones. The middle cube graphs can be obtained from the well-known odd graphs by doubling their vertex set. Here we study some of the properties of the middle cube graphs in the light of the theory of distance-regular graphs. In particular, we completely determine their spectra (eigenvalues and their multiplicities, and associated eigenvectors).
Let $p ,r $ and $n $ be positive integers. Then the O-Fibonacci $(p,r)$-cube $OΓ^{(p,r)}_{n}$ is the subgraph of $Q_{n}$ induced on the binary words in which there is at least $p-1$ zeros between any two $1$s and there is at most $r$ consecutive $10^{p-1}$. These cubes include a wide range of cubes as their special cases, such as hypercubes, Fibonacci cubes, and postal networks. In this note it is proved that $OΓ^{(p,r)}_{n}$ is a non-trivial Cartesian product if and only if $p=1$ and $r\geq n\geq2$.
In this paper we study random induced subgraphs of the binary $n$-cube, $Q_2^n$. This random graph is obtained by selecting each $Q_2^n$-vertex with independent probability $λ_n$. Using a novel construction of subcomponents we study the largest component for $λ_n=\frac{1+χ_n}{n}$, where $ε\ge χ_n\ge n^{-{1/3}+ δ}$, $δ>0$. We prove that there exists a.s. a unique largest component $C_n^{(1)}$. We furthermore show that $χ_n=ε$, $| C_n^{(1)}|\sim α(ε) \frac{1+χ_n}{n} 2^n$ and for $o(1)=χ_n\ge n^{-{1/3}+δ}$, $| C_n^{(1)}| \sim 2 χ_n \frac{1+χ_n}{n} 2^n$ holds. This improves the result of \cite{Bol…
The connectivity is an important parameter to evaluate the robustness of a network. As a generalization, structure connectivity and substructure connectivity of graphs were proposed. For connected graphs $G$ and $H$, the $H$-structure connectivity $κ(G; H)$ (resp. $H$-substructure connectivity $κ^{s}(G; H)$) of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a set of subgraphs $F$ of $G$ that each is isomorphic to $H$ (resp. to a connected subgraph of $H$) so that $G-F$ is disconnected or the singleton. As popular variants of hypercubes, the $n$-dimensional folded hypercubes $FQ_{n}$ and augmented cubes $AQ…
We study random subgraphs of the $n$-cube $\{0,1\}^n$, where nearest-neighbor edges are occupied with probability $p$. Let $p_c(n)$ be the value of $p$ for which the expected cluster size of a fixed vertex attains the value $λ2^{n/3}$, where $λ$ is a small positive constant. Let $ε=n(p-p_c(n))$. In two previous papers, we showed that the largest cluster inside a scaling window given by $|ε|=Θ(2^{-n/3})$ is of size $Θ(2^{2n/3})$, below this scaling window it is at most $2(\log2) nε^{-2}$, and above this scaling window it is at most $O(ε2^n)$. In this paper, we prove that for $p - p_c(n) \geq e^…
A middle-cube is an induced subgraph consisting of nodes at the middle two layers of a hypercube. The middle-cubes are related to the well-known Revolving Door (Middle Levels) conjecture. We study the middle-cube graph by completely characterizing its spectrum. Specifically, we first present a simple proof of its spectrum utilizing the fact that the graph is related to Johnson graphs which are distance-regular graphs and whose eigenvalues can be computed using the association schemes. We then give a second proof from a pure graph theory point of view without using its distance regular property…
We investigate the structure of isometric subgraphs of hypercubes (i.e., partial cubes) which do not contain finite convex subgraphs contractible to the 3-cube minus one vertex $Q^-_3$ (here contraction means contracting the edges corresponding to the same coordinate of the hypercube). Extending similar results for median and cellular graphs, we show that the convex hull of an isometric cycle of such a graph is gated and isomorphic to the Cartesian product of edges and even cycles. Furthermore, we show that our graphs are exactly the class of partial cubes in which any finite convex subgraph c…

The Fibonacci cube of dimension n, denoted as $Γ\_n$, is the subgraph of the hypercube induced by vertices with no consecutive 1's. The irregularity of a graph G is the sum of |d(x)-d(y)| over all edges {x,y} of G. In two recent paper based on the recursive structure of $Γ\_n$ it is proved that the irregularity of $Γ\_n$ and $Λ\_n$ are two times the number of edges of $Γ\_{n-1}$ and $2n$ times the number of vertices of $Γ\_{n-4}$, respectively. Using an interpretation of the irregularity in terms of couples of incident edges of a special kind (Figure 2) we give a bijective proof of both result…
The generalized Fibonacci cube $Q_d(f)$ is the subgraph of the $d$-cube $Q_d$ induced on the set of all strings of length $d$ that do not contain $f$ as a substring. It is proved that if $Q_d(f) \cong Q_d(f')$ then $|f|=|f'|$. The key tool to prove this result is a result of Guibas and Odlyzko about the autocorrelation polynomial associated to a binary string. It is also proved that there exist pairs of strings $f, f'$ such that $Q_d(f) \cong Q_d(f')$, where $|f| \ge \frac{2}{3}(d+1)$ and $f'$ cannot be obtained from $f$ by its reversal or binary complementation. Strings $f$ and $f'$ with $|f|…
Fibonacci cubes are induced subgraphs of hypercube graphs obtained by restricting the vertex set to those binary strings which do not contain consecutive 1s. This class of graphs has been studied extensively and generalized in many different directions. Induced subgraphs of the hypercube on binary strings with restricted runlengths as vertices define Fibonacci-run graphs. These graphs have the same number of vertices as Fibonacci cubes, but fewer edges and different graph theoretical properties. Basic properties of Fibonacci-run graphs are presented in a companion paper, while in this paper we…
In this paper, we show that every $(2^{n-1}+1)$-vertex induced subgraph of the $n$-dimensional cube graph has maximum degree at least $\sqrt{n}$. This result is best possible, and improves a logarithmic lower bound shown by Chung, Füredi, Graham and Seymour in 1988. As a direct consequence, we prove that the sensitivity and degree of a boolean function are polynomially related, solving an outstanding foundational problem in theoretical computer science, the Sensitivity Conjecture of Nisan and Szegedy.
Let G be a random subgraph of the n-cube where each edge appears randomly and independently with probability p. We prove that the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of G is almost surely λ_1(G)= (1+o(1)) max(Δ^{1/2}(G),np), where Δ(G) is the maximum degree of G and o(1) term tends to zero as max (Δ^{1/2}(G), np) tends to infinity.
We investigate the structure of two-dimensional partial cubes, i.e., of isometric subgraphs of hypercubes whose vertex set defines a set family of VC-dimension at most 2. Equivalently, those are the partial cubes which are not contractible to the 3-cube $Q_3$ (here contraction means contracting the edges corresponding to the same coordinate of the hypercube). We show that our graphs can be obtained from two types of combinatorial cells (gated cycles and gated full subdivisions of complete graphs) via amalgams. The cell structure of two-dimensional partial cubes enables us to establish a variet…
We consider a sparse random subraph of the $n$-cube where each edge appears independently with small probability $p(n) =O(n^{-1+o(1)})$. In the most interesting regime when $p(n)$ is not exponentially small we prove that the largest eigenvalue of the graph is asymtotically equal to the square root of the maximum degree.
The signature of a spanning tree $T$ of the $n$-cube $Q_n$ is the $n$-tuple $\mathrm{sig}(T)=(a_1,a_2,\dots,a_n)$ such that $a_i$ is the number of edges of $T$ in the $i$th direction. We characterise the $n$-tuples that can occur as the signature of a spanning tree, and classify a signature $\mathcal{S}$ as reducible or irreducible according to whether or not there is a proper nonempty subset $R$ of $[n]$ such that restricting $\mathcal{S}$ to the indices in $R$ gives a signature of $Q_{|R|}$. If so, we say moreover that $\mathcal{S}$ and $T$ reduce over $R$. We show that reducibility places s…
Let $k\geq\ell\geq1$ and $n\geq 1$ be integers. Let $G(k,n)$ be the complete $k$-partite graph with $n$ vertices in each colour class. An $\ell$-decomposition of $G(k,n)$ is a set $X$ of copies of $K_k$ in $G(k,n)$ such that each copy of $K_\ell$ in $G(k,n)$ is a subgraph of exactly one copy of $K_k$ in $X$. This paper asks: when does $G(k,n)$ have an $\ell$-decomposition? The answer is well known for the $\ell=2$ case. In particular, $G(k,n)$ has a 2-decomposition if and only if there exists $k-2$ mutually orthogonal Latin squares of order $n$. For general $\ell$, we prove that $G(k,n)$ has a…
