In this contribution, we discuss the electromagnetic and weak decays of baryons in the unquenched quark model and show that the observed discrepancies between the experimental data and the predictions of the constituent quark model can be accounted for in large part by the effects of sea quarks. Finally, the obtained results are discussed in terms of flavor-symmetry breaking.
We discuss some applications of the unquenched quark model which is an extension of the CQM that includes the effects of sea quarks via a 3P0 quark-antiquark pair-creation mechanism. Particular attention is paid to the electromagnetic couplings and beta decays of baryons. It is shown that the observed discrepancies between the experimental data and the predictions of the CQM can be accounted for in large part by the effects of sea quarks in the unquenched quark model.
We have analyzed the chiral expansion of the baryon masses to second order in the quark masses, including strong isospin violation. The calculations are performed in Lorentz-invariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. Chiral extrapolation functions for three-flavor unquenched lattice simulations are derived. The matching to the two-flavor case and the sigma terms are also considered.
In this contribution, we present the unquenched quark model as an extension of the constituent quark model that includes the effects of sea quarks via a $^{3}P_{0}$ quark-antiquark pair-creation mechanism. Particular attention is paid to the spin and flavor content of the proton, magnetic moments and $β$ decays of octet baryons.
We present an unquenched quark model for baryons in which the effects of the quark-antiquark pairs (up, down and strange) are taken into account in an explicit form via a microscopic, QCD-inspired, quark-antiquark creation mechanism. In the present approach, the contribution of the quark-antiquark pairs can be studied for any inital baryon and for any flavor of the pairs. It is shown that, while the inclusion of quark-antiquark pairs does not affect the baryon magnetic moments, it leads to a sizeable contribution of the orbital angular momentum to the spin of the proton and the Lambda hyperon.
We present an unquenched quark model for baryons in which the effects of quark-antiquark pairs (light flavors, u, d and s) are taken into account in an explicit form. The method is illustrated with an application to the flavor asymmetry of the nucleon sea.
We present the last applications of the unquenched quark model (UQM) to the description of flavour asymmetry and strangeness in the proton when baryon-meson components are included. In the meson sector, the UQM is used to calculate the charmonium and bottomonium spectra with self-energy corrections due to the coupling to the meson-meson continuum.
Once upon a time, the picture of hadrons was of mesons made of a quark and an antiquark, and baryons of three quarks. Though hadrons heavier than the ground states inevitably decay by the strong interaction, the successes of the quark model might suggest their decays are a mere perturbation. However, Eef van Beveren, whose career we celebrate here, recognised that decays are an integral part of the life of a hadron. The channels into which they decay are often essential for their very existence. These hold the secrets of strong coupling QCD and teach us the way quarks really build hadrons.
We discuss the flavor asymmetry of the nucleon in an unquenched quark model for baryons in which the effects of quark-antiquark pairs (u anti-u, d anti-d and s anti-s) are taken into account in an explicit form. It is shown that the inclusion of q anti-q pairs leads to an excess of anti-d over anti-u quarks in the proton.
In this contribution, we briefly analyze the formalism of the unquenched quark model (UQM) and its application to the description of several observables of hadrons. In the UQM, the effects of $q \bar q$ sea pairs are introduced explicitly into the quark model through a QCD-inspired $^{3}P_0$ pair-creation mechanism. We present our description of flavour asymmetry and strangeness in the proton when baryon-meson components are included. In the meson sector, the charmonium and bottomonium spectra with self-energy corrections due to the coupling to the meson-meson components .
We present an unquenched quark model calculation of the mass shifts of ground-state octet and decuplet baryons due to the coupling to the meson-baryon continuum. The $q\bar{q}$ pair-creation effects are taken explicitly into account through a microscopic, QCD-inspired, quark-antiquark pair- creation mechanism.
We consider the role played by hyperfine mixing in electromagnetic and semileptonic decays of doubly heavy baryons, which give rise to large corrections to the decay widths in both cases.
Nucleon elastic and transition form factors are analyzed in the framework of a collective model of baryons. Effects of meson cloud couplings and relativistic corrections are considered.
We obtain the QCD quark condensate from consideration of unquenched quark dynamics in Dyson-Schwinger gluon vacuum. We consider the non-local extension of the condensate and determine the quark virtuality. We also obtain the condensate-driven contribution of the non-perturbative QCD to Euler--Heisenberg Lagrangian of QED in external electromagnetic fields.
We investigate the role of hyperfine mixing in the electromagnetic decay of ground state doubly heavy $bc$ baryons. As in the case of a previous calculation on $b\to c$ semileptonic decays of doubly heavy baryons, we find large corrections to the electromagnetic decay widths due to this mixing. Contrary to the weak case just mentioned, we find here that one can not use electromagnetic width relations obtained in the infinite heavy quark mass limit to experimentally extract information on the admixtures in a model independent way.
The electromagnetic properties of baryon octet are studied in the perturbative chiral quark model (PCQM). The relativistic quark wave function is extracted by fitting the theoretical results of the proton charge form factor to experimental data and the predetermined quark wave function is applied to study the electromagnetic form factors of other octet baryons as well as magnetic moments, charge and magnetic radii. The PCQM results are found, based on the predetermined quark wave function, in good agreement with experimental data.
Baryons are treated as three-quark systems using QCD degrees of freedom in Poincare-covariant bound-state equations. The quark self-energy as well as the interaction between quarks are approximated by a vector-vector interaction via a single dressed-gluon exchange (rainbow-ladder truncation), thereby allowing a unified study of quark, meson and baryon properties. Here we will focus on the calculation of electromagnetic properties of spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 ground state baryons.
The parameter-free predictions for the $N - P_{11}(1440)$ and $N - P_{33}(1232)$ electromagnetic transition form factors, obtained within our light-front constituent quark model using eigenfunctions of a baryon mass operator which includes a large amount of configuration mixing, are reported. The effects due to small components in the baryon wave functions, such as S'- and D-wave, are also investigated.
We present a simultaneous analysis of elastic and transition form factors of the nucleon. The calculations are performed in the framework of an algebraic model of baryons. Effects of meson cloud couplings are considered.
We explore the electromagnetic contribution to the charge symmetry breaking in the octet baryon masses using a subtracted dispersion relation based on the Cottingham formula. For the proton-neutron mass splitting we report a minor revision of the recent analysis of Walker-Loud, Carlson and Miller. For the electromagnetic structure of the hyperons we constrain our analysis, where possible, by a combination of lattice QCD and SU(3) symmetry breaking estimates. The results for the baryon mass splittings are found to be compatible with recent lattice QCD+QED determinations. The uncertainties in th…
We consider the electromagnetic transition form factors of the Roper resonance in the framework of an effective field theory of pions, nucleons and delta and Roper resonances as explicit degrees of freedom. Due to the lack experimental data in the region of applicability of low energy effective field theory we fit available free coupling constants and compare obtained results compare to the predictions of a theoretical model.
We study electromagnetic transitions of excited baryons in a deformed oscillator quark model, where baryon excited states are described as rotational bands of deformed intrinsic states. We describe all necessary tools to compute transition amplitudes in multipole basis, which are then related to the commonly used helicity amplitudes. We pay a special attention on the sign of the amplitudes as well as their absolute values by computing the photon and pion couplings simultaneously. We have found that the effect of deformation on the transition amplitudes is rather weak. The difficulty in reprodu…
We briefly describe our relativistic quark-diquark model, developed within the framework of point form dynamics, which is the relativistic extension of the interacting quark-diquark model. In order to do that we have to show the main properties and quantum numbers of the effective degree of freedom of constituent diquark. Our results for the nonstrange baryon spectrum and for the nucleon electromagnetic form factors are discussed.
We investigate the electromagnetic mass differences of SU(3) baryons, using an "model-independent approach" within a chiral soliton model. The electromagnetic self-energy corrections to the masses of the baryon are expressed as the baryonic two-point correlation function of the electromagnetic currents. Using the fact that the electromagnetic current can be treated as an octet operator, and considering possible irreducible representations of the correlation function, we are able to construct a general collective operator for the electromagnetic self-energies, which consists of three unknown pa…
We calculate the charge quadrupole and magnetic octupole moments of baryons using a group theoretical approach based on broken SU(6) spin-flavor symmetry. The latter is an approximate symmetry of the QCD Lagrangian which becomes exact in the large color N_c limit. Spin-flavor symmetry breaking is induced by one-, two-, and three-quark terms in the electromagnetic current operator. Two- and three-quark currents provide the leading contributions for higher multipole moments, despite being of higher order in an 1/N_c expansion. Our formalism leads to relations between N --> N* transition multipol…
We calculate baryon decuplet to octet electromagnetic transition form factors in quenched and partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. We work in the isospin limit of SU(3) flavor, up to next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion, and to leading order in the heavy baryon expansion. Our results are necessary for proper extrapolation of lattice calculations of these transitions. We also derive expressions for the case of SU(2) flavor away from the isospin limit.
The electromagnetic properties of baryons containing a heavy quark are calculated at next-to-leading order in partially quenched heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory. Calculations are performed for three light flavors in the isospin limit and additionally for two light non-degenerate flavors. We use partially-quenched charge matrices that are easy to implement on the lattice. The results presented are necessary for the light quark mass extrapolation and zero-momentum extrapolation of lattice QCD and partially quenched lattice QCD calculations of heavy hadron electromagnetic properties. Addi…
We calculate electromagnetic properties of the decuplet baryons in quenched and partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. We work at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion, leading order in the heavy baryon expansion, and obtain expressions for the magnetic moments, charge radii, and electric quadrupole moments. The quenched calculation is shown to be pathological since only quenched chiral singularities are present at this order. We present the partially quenched results for both the SU(2) and SU(3) flavor groups and use the isospin limit in the latter. These results are necessary…
We point out a source of ambiguities in the measurements of the electromagnetic moments of spin-3/2 baryons which rely on relativistic Lagrangian models. An anambiguous relation between the parameters of the spin-3/2 electromagnetic Lagrangian and the electromagnetic moments of the spin-3/2 particle exits in general only for on-shell situation, while the measurements are done on ``virtual'' baryons.
In the holographic model of QCD suggested by Sakai and Sugimoto, baryons are chiral solitons sourced by D4 instantons in bulk of size 1/\sqrtλ with λ=g^2N_c. We quantize the D4 instanton semiclassically using \hbar=1/(N_cλ) and non-rigid constraints on the vector mesons. The holographic baryon is a small chiral bag in the holographic direction with a Cheshire cat smile. The vector-baryon interactions occur at the core boundary of the instanton in D4. They are strong and of order 1/\sqrt{\hbar}. To order \hbar^0 the electromagnetic current is entirely encoded on the core boundary and vector-mes…
The momentum distributions of the constituent quarks inside the nucleon and the prominent electroproduced nucleon resonances are investigated in the two most sophisticated, available quark potential models, based respectively on the assumption of the valence + gluon dominance and on the exchange of the pseudoscalar Goldstone-bosons arising from the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. It is shown that both models predict a large, similar content of high-momentum components, due to the short-range part of the interquark interaction, which affect the behaviour of both elastic and transition …
We construct the general Lagrangian for relativistic and heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory with virtual photons to fourth order. We work out the electromagnetic and strong isospin violating contributions to the nucleon self-energy, the nucleon mass and the scalar form factor of the nucleon. Electromagnetic effects for the shift to the Cheng-Dashen point can be as large as 2 MeV. We also discuss the corrections to Weinberg's prediction for the scattering length difference $a(π^0 p) - a(π^0 n)$ and show that they are small.
I briefly summarize the application of the Dyson-Schwinger/Faddeev approach to baryon form factors. Recent results for nucleon electromagnetic and axial form factors as well as N-Delta-Gamma electromagnetic transition form factors are discussed. The calculation of the current diagrams from the quark-gluon level enables an analysis of common features, such as the implications of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and quark orbital angular momentum, the timelike structure of the form factors, and their interpretation in terms of missing pion-cloud effects.
Thermal radiation of photons and dileptons from hadronic matter plays an essential role in understanding electromagnetic emission spectra in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. In particular, baryons and anti-baryons have been found to be strong catalysts for electromagnetic radiation, even at collider energies where the baryon chemical potential is small. Here, we conduct a systematic analysis of $π$- and $ω$-meson-induced reactions off a large set of baryon states. The interactions are based on effective hadronic Lagrangians where the parameters are quantitatively constrained by empirical info…
We study the effects of the | qqq q\bar{q} > component of the hadronic wave function on the description of the electromagnetic structure of the nucleon. Starting with a qqq baryonic wave function which describes the baryonic and mesonic low energy spectrum, the extra q\bar{q} pair is generated through a relativistic version of the 3P_0 model. It is shown that this model leads to a renormalization of the quark mass that allows one to construct a conserved electromagnetic current. We conclude that these dynamical relativistic corrections play an important role in reproducing the Q2 dependence of…
The electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon are calculated at order $q^4$ in the relativistic formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory. In order to obtain a consistent power counting for the renormalized diagrams we make use of the extended on-mass-shell renormalization scheme which we have discussed in a recent paper. We analyze the Dirac and Pauli form factors, $F_1$ and $F_2$, as well as the electric and magnetic Sachs form factors, $G_E$ and $G_M$. Our results are compared with those obtained in the heavy-baryon approach and in the (relativistic) infrared regularization. In add…
We construct analytic (3+1)-dimensional inhomogeneous and topologically non-trivial pion systems using chiral perturbation theory. We discuss the effect of isospin asymmetry with vanishing electromagnetic interactions as well as some particular configurations with non-vanishing electromagnetic interactions. The inhomogeneous configurations of the pion fields are characterized by a non-vanishing topological charge that can be identified with baryons surrounded by a cloud of pions. This system supports a topologically protected persistent superflow. When the electromagnetic field is turned on th…
We study the octet baryon electromagnetic properties by applying the covariant spectator quark model, and provide covariant parametrization that can be used to study baryon electromagnetic reactions. While we use the lattice QCD data in the large pion mass regime (small pion cloud effects) to determine the parameters of the model in the valence quark sector, we use the nucleon physical and octet baryon magnetic moment data to parameterize the pion cloud contributions. The valence quark contributions for the octet baryon electromagnetic form factors are estimated by extrapolating the lattice pa…
We study baryons as three-body systems using the QCD degrees of freedom in the framework of covariant Bethe-Salpeter equations. The interaction among quarks is reduced to a vector-vector interaction via a single dressed-gluon exchange (Rainbow-Ladder truncation). The formalism allows for the study of the hadron spectrum as well as their internal properties. We will present the calculation of electromagnetic properties of spin-3/2 baryons. The model independent features of our results are assessed using two different models for the dressings.
Using dispersion theory the low-energy electromagnetic form factors for the transition of a Sigma to a Lambda hyperon are related to the pion vector form factor. The additionally required input, i.e. the two-pion--Sigma--Lambda amplitudes are determined from relativistic next-to-leading-order (NLO) baryon chiral perturbation theory including the baryons from the octet and optionally from the decuplet. Pion rescattering is again taken into account by dispersion theory. It turns out that the inclusion of decuplet baryons is not an option but a necessity to obtain reasonable results. The electric…
Using baryon chiral perturbation theory including vector mesons, we analyse various continuum contributions to the isoscalar electromagnetic spectral functions of the nucleon induced by the leading order couplings.
We report on a calculation of higher electromagnetic multipole moments of baryons in a non-covariant quark model approach. The employed method is based on the underlying spin-flavor symmetry of the strong interaction and its breaking. We present results on magnetic octupole moments of decuplet baryons and discuss their implications.
We have systematically investigated the magnetic moments and magnetic form factors of the decuplet baryons to the next-to-next-leading order in the framework of the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. Our calculation includes the contributions from both the intermediate decuplet and octet baryon states in the loops. We also calculate the charge and magnetic dipole form factors of the decuplet baryons. Our results may be useful to the chiral extrapolation of the lattice simulations of the decuplet electromagnetic properties.
The electromagnetic form factors are the most fundamental quantities to describe the internal structure of the nucleon and are related to the charge radii of the baryons. We have calculated the charge radii of octet baryons in the framework of chiral constituent quark model with the inclusion of the spin-spin generated configuration mixing. This model is quite successful in predicting the low energy hadron matrix elements. The results obtained in the case of charge radii are also comparable to the latest experimental studies and show improvement over some theoretical interpretations.
We develop a methodology that enables us to extract accurately the electromagnetic Delta form factors and their momentum dependence. We test our approach in the quenched approximation as a preparation for a study using dynamical fermions. Our calculation of the four form factors covers pion masses between about 410 MeV and 560 MeV on lattices with a size of 2.9 fm and a lattice spacing 0.09 fm. From the form factors we are able to obtain estimates of the magnetic moment and the charge radius of the Delta, which we compare to existing experimental and theoretical results. Our non-zero result for…
We study the octet baryon electromagnetic form factors in nuclear matter using the covariant spectator quark model extended to the nuclear matter regime. The parameters of the model in vacuum are fixed by the study of the octet baryon electromagnetic form factors. In nuclear matter the changes in hadron properties are calculated by including the relevant hadron masses and the modification of the pion-baryon coupling constants calculated in the quark-meson coupling model. In nuclear matter the magnetic form factors of the octet baryons are enhanced in the low $Q^2$ region, while the electric fo…
Longitudinal and transverse transition form factors for most of the four-star nucleon resonances have been obtained from high-quality cross section data and polarization observables measured at MAMI, ELSA, BATES, GRAAL and CEBAF. As an application, we further show how the transition form factors can be used to obtain empirical transverse charge densities. Contour plots of the thus derived densities are shown and compared for the Roper and S11 nucleon resonances.
The electromagnetic structure of the baryons is modified in the nuclear medium. The modifications can be inferred from the comparison between the electromagnetic form factors in medium with the respective form factor in vacuum. Of particular interest is the ratio between the electric and magnetic form factors in medium ($G_E^*/G_M^*$) and vacuum ($G_E/G_M$) of the octet baryon. The deviation of the double ratios ($G_E^*/G_M^*)/(G_E/G_M)$ from unity measures the impact of the medium modification of the electromagnetic structure in a nuclear medium. Measurements of the double ratios $(G_E^*/G_M^…
Electromagnetic form factors of the baryon octet are studied using a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model which utilizes the proper-time regularization scheme to simulate aspects of colour confinement. In addition, the model also incorporates corrections to the dressed quarks from vector meson correlations in the t-channel and the pion cloud. Comparison with recent chiral extrapolations of lattice QCD results shows a remarkable level of consistency. For the charge radii we find the surprising result $r_{E}^p < r_{E}^{Σ^+}$ and $|r_{E}^n| < |r_{E}^{Ξ^0}|$, whereas the magnetic radii have a pattern largely…
Electromagnetic mean squared radii of Lambda(1405) are evaluated in chiral unitary approach. In this approach we regard Lambda(1405) as dynamically generated resonances in the octet meson and octet baryon scattering, and also as KbarN bound state. Especially for the Lambda(1405) as KbarN bound state we obtain negative electric mean squared radius. With the small binding energy of Lambda(1405) in the chiral unitary approach, our results imply that Lambda(1405) has structure that K^- is widely spread around p.
We present a calculation of the electric and magnetic form factors of ground-state octet and decuplet baryons including strange quarks. We work with a combination of Dyson-Schwinger equations for the quark propagator and covariant Bethe-Salpeter equations describing baryons as bound states of three (non-perturbative) quarks. Our form factors for the octet baryons are in good agreement with corresponding lattice data at finite $Q^2$; deviations in some isospin channels for the magnetic moments can be explained by missing meson cloud effects. At larger $Q^2$ our quark core calculation has predic…
The ratios of the baryon electric ($G_E$) to magnetic ($G_M$) form factors, $G_E/G_M$, can provide us with important information on the structure of baryons in vacuum as demonstrated in recent studies for the proton and neutron systems. It has been argued that the corresponding in-medium ratios, $G_E^\ast/G_M^\ast$, can also provide useful information on the electromagnetic structure of baryons in a nuclear medium. Although the ratios may not be measured directly in experiments except for the proton at present, the double ratios $(G_E^\ast/G_M^\ast)/(G_E/G_M)$ can be directly related to the po…
The self-consistent chiral quark-soliton model is a relativistic pion mean-field approach in the large $N_c$ limit, which describes both light and heavy baryons on an equal footing. In the limit of the infinitely heavy mass of the heavy quark, a heavy baryon can be regarded as $N_c-1$ valence quarks bound by the pion mean fields, leaving the heavy quark as a color static source. The structure of the heavy baryon in this scheme is mainly governed by the light-quark degrees of freedom. Based on this framework, we evaluate the electromagnetic form factors of the lowest-lying heavy baryons. The ro…
