We discuss the flavor asymmetry of the nucleon in an unquenched quark model for baryons in which the effects of quark-antiquark pairs (u anti-u, d anti-d and s anti-s) are taken into account in an explicit form. It is shown that the inclusion of q anti-q pairs leads to an excess of anti-d over anti-u quarks in the proton.
We present an unquenched quark model for baryons in which the effects of quark-antiquark pairs (light flavors, u, d and s) are taken into account in an explicit form. The method is illustrated with an application to the flavor asymmetry of the nucleon sea.
We present the last applications of the unquenched quark model (UQM) to the description of flavour asymmetry and strangeness in the proton when baryon-meson components are included. In the meson sector, the UQM is used to calculate the charmonium and bottomonium spectra with self-energy corrections due to the coupling to the meson-meson continuum.
In this contribution, we present the unquenched quark model as an extension of the constituent quark model that includes the effects of sea quarks via a $^{3}P_{0}$ quark-antiquark pair-creation mechanism. Particular attention is paid to the spin and flavor content of the proton, magnetic moments and $β$ decays of octet baryons.
The flavor asymmetry of the nucleon sea is discussed in an unquenched quark model for baryons in which the effects of quark-antiquark pairs (u anti-u, d anti-d and s anti-s) are taken into account in an explicit form. The inclusion of q anti-q pairs leads automatically to an excess of anti-d over anti-u quarks in the proton, in agreement with experimental data.
We discuss some applications of the unquenched quark model which is an extension of the CQM that includes the effects of sea quarks via a 3P0 quark-antiquark pair-creation mechanism. Particular attention is paid to the electromagnetic couplings and beta decays of baryons. It is shown that the observed discrepancies between the experimental data and the predictions of the CQM can be accounted for in large part by the effects of sea quarks in the unquenched quark model.
In this contribution, we briefly analyze the formalism of the unquenched quark model (UQM) and its application to the description of several observables of hadrons. In the UQM, the effects of $q \bar q$ sea pairs are introduced explicitly into the quark model through a QCD-inspired $^{3}P_0$ pair-creation mechanism. We present our description of flavour asymmetry and strangeness in the proton when baryon-meson components are included. In the meson sector, the charmonium and bottomonium spectra with self-energy corrections due to the coupling to the meson-meson components .
In this contribution, we discuss the electromagnetic and weak decays of baryons in the unquenched quark model and show that the observed discrepancies between the experimental data and the predictions of the constituent quark model can be accounted for in large part by the effects of sea quarks. Finally, the obtained results are discussed in terms of flavor-symmetry breaking.
In this contribution, we discuss the spin and flavor content of the proton in the framework of the unquenched quark model, and address the role of valence and sea quarks in the nucleon.
A critical appraisal is given of a recent analysis of the quark-mass and finite-size dependence of unquenched lattice QCD data for the nucleon mass. We use this forum to estimate the boundary of the chiral regime for nucleon properties.
In this study, the proton is taken as an ensemble of quark-gluon Fock states. Using the principle of detailed balance, the probabilities of finding every Fock states of the proton are obtained without any parameter. A new origin of the light flavor sea quark asymmetry, i.e., $\bar{u} \not= \bar{d}$, is given as a pure statistical effect. It is found that $\bar{d}-\bar{u} \approx 0.124$, which is in surprisingly agreement with the experimental observation.

We perform a global QCD analysis of unpolarized parton distributions within a Bayesian Monte Carlo framework, including the new $W$-lepton production data from the STAR Collaboration at RHIC and Drell-Yan di-muon data from the SeaQuest experiment at Fermilab. We assess the impact of these two new measurements on the light antiquark sea in the proton, and the $\bar{d}-\bar{u}$ asymmetry in particular. The SeaQuest data are found to significantly reduce the uncertainty on the $\bar{d}/\bar{u}$ ratio at large parton momentum fractions $x$, strongly favoring an enhanced $\bar{d}$ sea up to $x \app…
We analyze the non-perturbative structure of the strange sea of the nucleon within a meson cloud picture. In a low $Q^2$ approach in which the nucleon is viewed as a three valon bound state, we evaluate the probability distribution of an in-nucleon Kaon-Hyperon pair in terms of splitting functions and recombination. The resulting kaon and hyperon probability densities are convoluted with suitable strange distributions inside the meson and baryon in order to obtain non-perturbative contributions to the strange sea of the nucleon. We find a structured strange/anti-strange asymmetry, displaying a…
Based on the finite-temperature field theory, we evaluate the medium effects in nucleon which can induce an asymmetry between quarks and antiquarks of the strange sea. The short-distance effects determined by the weak interaction can give rise to $δm\equiv Δm_s-Δm_{\bar s}$ where $Δm_{s(\bar s)}$ is the medium-induced mass of strange quark by a few KeV at most, but the long-distance effects by strong interaction are sizable. Our numerical results show that there exists an obvious mass difference between strange and anti-strange quarks, as large as 10-100 MeV.
We show that the chiral $SU(n)\otimes SU(n)$ flavor symmetry on the null-plane severely restricts the sea quarks in the baryon octet. It predicts large asymmetry for the light sea quarks $(u,d,s)$, and universality and abundance for the heavy sea quarks. Further it is shown that existence of the heavy sea quarks constrained by the same symmetry reduces the theoretical value of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule substantially.
We propose a flavor asymmetry in the light quark sea of $Σ^{\pm}$, which can be measured in Drell-Yan experiments using charged hyperon beams on proton and deuteron targets. Such a measurement would help to reinforce the presence of pseudoscalar mesons in a quark model of baryons.
We predict a nonvanishing baryon asymmetry of the proton sea at low $x$. It is expected to be about $7\%$ and nearly $x$-independent at $x < 0.5 \times 10^{-3}$. The asymmetry arises from the baryon-antibaryon component of the Pomeron, rather than from the valence quarks of the proton, which are wide believed carriers of baryon number. Experimental study of $x$-distribution of the baryon asymmetry of the proton sea can be performed in $ep$ or $γp$ interactions at HERA, where $x\sim 10^{-5}$ are reachable, smaller than at any of existing or planned proton colliders.

We present a general analysis of the spin transfer for $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ production in deep-inelastic scattering of polarized charged leptons on the nucleon, and find that the pattern of different behaviors of $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ production observed by the E665 Collaboration suggests the possibility of quark-antiquark asymmetries either in the quark to $Λ$ fragmentation functions and/or in the quark and antiquark distributions of the target proton. We also point out that the strange-antistrange asymmetry of the nucleon sea may produce an observable contribution to the different behaviors of $Λ$ and …
We re-examine the effects of anti-symmetry on the anti-quarks in the nucleon sea arising from gluon exchange and pion exchange between confined quarks. While the effect is primarily to suppress anti-down relative to anti-up quarks, this is numerically insignificant for the pion terms.
By using the soft pion theorem in the inclusive reactions, soft pions' contribution to the structure function $F_2$ in the nucleon is estimated. It is shown that this contribution produces such a large flavor asymmetry in the light sea quark distributions that it gives about $30\sim 50 %$ of the NMC deficit in the Gottfried sum.
We give predictions for the nonperturbative (intrinsic) contribution to the $s(x) - \bar{s}(x)$ asymmetry of the nucleon sea. For this purpose we use different light-front wave functions inspired by the AdS/QCD formalism, together with a model of the nucleon in terms of meson-baryon fluctuations. The holographic wave functions for an arbitrary number of constituents, recently derived by us, give results quite close to known parametrizations that appear in the literature.
The existence of the five-quark Fock states for the intrinsic charm quark in the nucleons was suggested some time ago, but conclusive evidence is still lacking. We generalize the previous theoretical approach to the light-quark sector and study possible experimental signatures for such five-quark states. In particular, we compare the $\bar d - \bar u$ and $\bar u + \bar d - s -\bar s$ data with the calculations based on the five-quark Fock states. The qualitative agreement between the data and the calculations is interpreted as evidence for the existence of the intrinsic light-quark sea in the…
Parton distributions derived from a chiral quark model that generates an excess of down quarks and antiquarks in the proton's sea satisfactorily describe the measured yields of muon pairs produced in proton-nucleus collisions. Comparison of dilepton yields from hydrogen and deuterium targets promises greater sensitivity to the predicted flavor asymmetry.
The light flavor antiquark distributions of the nucleon sea are calculated in the effective chiral quark model and compared with experimental results. The contributions of the flavor-symmetric sea-quark distributions and the nuclear EMC effect are taken into account to obtain the ratio of Drell-Yan cross sections $σ^{\mathrm{pD}}/2σ^{\mathrm{pp}}$, which can match well with the results measured in the FermiLab E866/NuSea experiment. The calculated results also match the measured $\bar{d}(x)-\bar{u}(x)$ from different experiments, but unmatch the behavior of $\bar{d}(x)/\bar{u}(x)$ derived indi…
The Gottfried sum rule violation reported by the New Muon Collaboration(NMC) was interpreted as indication for a flavour asymmetry of the sea quark in the nucleons. We investigate the alternative possibility that isospin symmetry between the proton and the neutron is breaking. We examine systematically the consequences of this possibility for several processes, namely, neutrino deep inelastic scattering, charged pion Drell-Yan process, proton Drell-Yan process, and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, and conclude that a decision between the two alternative explanations is possible.
Using the soft pion theorem in the inclusive reactions, we estimate the soft pion contribution to the structure functions $F_2$ and $g_1$ in the nucleon, and show that it is an indispensable part in these structure functions in the small $x$ region. This contribution is asymmetric for the soft $π^+$ and $π^-$ due to pole terms in the soft pion limit, hence it is a remnant of the spontaneous chiral symmetry breakings. Then we show that the modified strange sea quark where the soft pion contribution is added to the distribution determined by the ansatz (strange-sea)=(up-sea + down-sea)/4 satisfi…
We calculate the strange quark and antiquark distributions of the nucleon by using the effective chiral quark model, and find that the strange-antistrange asymmetry can bring a contribution of about 60--100% to the NuTeV deviation of $\sin^{2}θ_{w}$ from the standard value measured in other electroweak processes. The results are insensitive to different inputs. The light-flavor quark asymmetry of $\bar{d}-\bar{u}$ is also investigated and found to be consistent with the experimental measurements. Therefore the chiral quark model provides a successful picture to understand the NuTeV anomaly, as…
The modified Gottfried sum rule makes clear importance of the high energy region not only in the theoretical meaning but also in the numerical analysis. In this talk, it is shown that the soft pion theorem in the inclusive reaction at high energy can explain the magnitude about $0.02 \sim 0.04$ in the NMC deficit. The main contribution comes from the small $x$ region. We also estimate the soft pion contribution to the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule and show it to be negligible. However we find that the contribution to $g_1^{ep}$ becomes positive below $x = 0.002$.
Although the distributions of sea quarks and antiquarks generated by leading-twist QCD evolution through gluon splitting $g \rightarrow \bar q q$ are necessarily CP symmetric, the distributions of nonvalence quarks and antiquarks which are intrinsic to the nucleon's bound state wavefunction need not be identical. In this paper we investigate the sea quark/antiquark asymmetries in the nucleon wavefunction which are generated by a light-cone model of energetically-favored meson-baryon fluctuations. The model predicts striking quark/antiquark asymmetries in the momentum and helicity distributions…
SU(3), baryon octets and a meson cloud model are compared for the flavor asymmetry of sea quarks in the $Σ^+$, as an example. Large differences are found, especially between SU(3) and the meson cloud model. We suggest Drell-Yan measurements of $Σ^{+}-p$ and $Σ^{+}- d$ to test the prediction of various models. We use the meson cloud model to predict both valence and sea quark distributions.
