We consider the electromagnetic transition form factors of the Roper resonance in the framework of an effective field theory of pions, nucleons and delta and Roper resonances as explicit degrees of freedom. Due to the lack experimental data in the region of applicability of low energy effective field theory we fit available free coupling constants and compare obtained results compare to the predictions of a theoretical model.
The recently proposed mechanism for the formation of the Roper resonance, in which a dynamically generated state as well as a genuine three-quark resonant state play an equally important role, is confronted with the model proposed almost twenty years ago in which the Roper is pictured as a molecular state of the nucleon and the $σ$ meson.
We present a chiral model describing decays of the Roper-like $Λ_c(2765)$ and $Ξ_c(2970)$ as well as those of the heavy quark spin-doublet $\{Σ_c(2455),Σ_c(2520)\}$ and $\{Ξ_c',Ξ_c(2645)\}$, by focusing on chiral representations of diquarks inside the heavy baryons. Based on our chiral model together with the heavy quark spin symmetry, we derive a relation satisfied by axial charges of the heavy baryons that controls magnitude of their one pion (kaon) decays. Besides, it is shown that the large decay widths of the Roper-like $Λ_c(2765)$ and $Ξ_c(2970)$, which cannot be implemented by conventio…
We analyze the form factors of the electromagnetic nucleon-to-Roper-resonance transition in the framework of low-energy effective field theory. A systematic power-counting procedure is generated by applying the complex-mass scheme. Within this power counting we calculate the form factors to next-to-next-to-leading order and fit the results to empirical data.
We include the Roper excitation of the nucleon in a version of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory recently developed for energies around the delta resonance. We find significant improvement in the $P_{11}$ channel.
We report on a recent calculation of all Roper-related electromagnetic transtions form factors, covering the range of energies that next-to-come planned experiments are expected to map. Direct reliable calculations were performed, within a Poincaré covariant approach of the three-body bound-state problem, up to $Q^2/m^2_N$=6; approximated then by applying the Schlessinger point method and the results eventually extended up to $Q^2/m^2_N\simeq$12 via analytic continuation.
We study the three-body decay of the newly observed bottom baryon $Λ_b^*(6072)$ by LHCb; $Λ_b^*(6072) \to Λ_b ππ$. Its mass about 500 MeV above the ground state $Λ_b$ and a broad width imply that the state could be an analogue of the Roper resonance of the nucleon $N(1440)$. In terms of sequential processes going through $Σ_b$ and $Σ_b^*$, we find that the observed invariant mass distribution is reproduced assuming its spin and parity $J^P = 1/2^+$. We discuss that the ratio of the two sequential processes and angular correlation of two pions are useful for the determination of spin and parity…
We study the electromagnetic transitions of the Roper N(1440) resonance. Our results, when combined with the previously obtained for the mass and the pionic strong decay widths of the Roper, show that within a non-relativistic constituent quark model scheme, a comprehensible understanding of the Roper phenomenology can be achieved. They also seem to support the view of the Roper as a radial excitation of the nucleon, though more experimental data are needed to reach a definitive conclusion.
We calculate the decays of baryon resonances to the pion + Roper resonance channel in the frame of the flux-tube breaking model. The baryon and meson wavefunctions we use are obtained from a linear confinement semi-relativistic constituent quark model. The results, in good agreement with the existing data, provide a spectrum independant test on the radial form of the main component of the Roper resonance. They shed light on a likely orbital nature for the second delta resonance.
A parameter-free evaluation of the $N - P_{11}(1440)$ electromagnetic transition form factors is performed within a light-front constituent quark model, using for the first time the eigenfunctions of a mass operator which generates a large amount of configuration mixing in baryon wave functions. A one-body electromagnetic current, which includes the phenomenological constituent quark form factors already determined from an analysis of pion and nucleon experimental data, is adopted. For $Q^2$ up to few $(GeV/c)^2$, at variance with the enhancement found in the elastic channel, the effect of con…
We analyze the quark mass dependence of the Roper mass to one-loop order in relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory. The loop integrals are evaluated using infrared regularization which preserves chiral symmetry and establishes a chiral counting scheme. The derived chiral expansion of the Roper mass may prove useful for chiral extrapolations of lattice data. For couplings of natural size the quark mass dependence of the Roper mass is similar to the one of the nucleon.
Two different descriptions of the existing pion-nucleon scattering data in the region of the Roper resonance are constructed. Both descriptions fit the experimental data very well. In one scenario the resonance is the result of strong rescattering between coupled meson-baryon channels, while in the other scenario, the resonance has a large bare-baryon (or quark-model like) component. The predictions of these two scenarios are compared with the latest lattice QCD simulation results in this channel. Consideration of the finite volume spectra, the manner in which the states are excited from the v…
In view of the recent results of lattice QCD simulation in the P11 partial wave that has found no clear signal for the three-quark Roper state we investigate a different mechanism for the formation of the Roper resonance in a coupled channel approach including the $πN$, $πΔ$ and $σN$ channels. We fix the pion-baryon vertices in the underlying quark model while the $s$-wave sigma-baryon interaction is introduced phenomenologically with the coupling strength, the mass and the width of the $σ$ meson as free parameters. The Laurent-Pietarinen expansion is used to extract the information about the …
High-precision nucleon-resonance electroproduction data on a large kinematic domain of energy and momentum transfer have proven crucial in revealing novel features of strong interactions within the Standard Model and unfolding structural details of baryon excited states. Thus, in anticipation of new data reaching to unprecedented photon virtuality, we employ a quark-diquark approximation to the three valence-quark bound-state problem to compute $γ^\ast p \to R^+$ and $γ^\ast n \to R^0$ transition form factors on $Q^2/m_N^2 \in [0,12]$, where $m_N$ is the nucleon mass. Having simultaneously ana…
The unitary isobar model MAID2007 has been used to analyze the recent data of pion electroproduction. The model contains all four-star resonances in the region below W=2 GeV and both single-Q^2 and Q^2 dependent transition form factors could be obtained for the Delta, Roper, D13(1520), S11(1535), S31(1620), S11(1650), D15(1675), F15(1680) and P13(1720). From the complete world data base, including also pi- data on the neutron, also Q^2 dependent neutron form factors are obtained. For all transition form factors we also give convenient numerical parameterizations that can be used in other react…
A Dyson-Schwinger equation calculation of the light hadron spectrum, which correlates the masses of meson and baryon ground- and excited-states within a single framework, produces a description of the Roper resonance that corresponds closely with conclusions drawn recently by EBAC. Namely, the Roper is a particular type of radial excitation of the nucleon's dressed-quark core augmented by a material meson cloud component. There are, in addition, some surprises.
The structure of the Roper resonance as a hybrid baryon is investigated through studying the transitional amplitudes in J/psi-> p\barN*, N*\barN* decays. We begin with perturbative QCD to describe the dynamical process for the J/psi-> 3\bar q+3q decay to the lowest order of α_s, and by extending the modified quark creation model to the J/psi energy region to describe the J/psi-> 3\bar q+3q +g process. The non-perturbative effects are incorporated by a simple quark model of baryons to evaluate the angular distribution parameters and decay widths for the processes J/psi-> pbar N*,N*bar N*. From …
We calculate photoexcitation amplitudes for several nucleon and delta resonances. We use a chiral quark model including two-body exchange currents. The two-body currents give important contributions. For the delta (1232) and the D13 (1520) we observe that the individual exchange current contributions considerably cancel each other while in the case of the Roper resonance and the S11 (1535) we get a reinforcement of the two-body amplitudes. In comparison with present experimental data, we obtain both for the S11 (1535) and for the Roper resonance an improvement with respect to the impulse appro…
The purpose of this contribution is to stress the great importance of polarization observables for the study of nucleon resonances, in particular in the case of deuteron and proton probes. Polarization observables play a unique role in signing the reaction mechanism and bring new information in the microscopic description of baryon resonances. We will calculate the relevant polarization observables, for $p+d$- and $p+α$-collisions, in case of inclusive reactions and for some selected exclusive channels.
We investigate the structure of the nucleon resonance N^*(1440) (Roper) within a coupled-channel meson exchange model for pion-nucleon scattering. The coupling to pipiN states is realized effectively by the coupling to the sigmaN, piDelta and rhoN channels. The interaction within and between these channels is derived from an effective Lagrangian based on a chirally symmetric Lagrangian, which is supplemented by well known terms for the coupling of the Delta isobar, the omega meson and the 'sigma', which is the name given here to the strong correlation of two pions in the scalar-isoscalar chann…
The full QCD chiral symmetry algebra has predictive consequences at low energies. I discuss the ground-state chiral multiplet involving the light baryons and emphasize the special role of the Roper resonance.
We compute nucleon and Roper e.m. elastic and transition form factors using a symmetry-preserving treatment of a contact-interaction. Obtained thereby, the e.m. interactions of baryons are typically described by hard form factors. In contrasting this behaviour with that produced by a momentum-dependent interaction, one achieves comparisons which highlight that elastic scattering and resonance electroproduction experiments probe the infrared evolution of QCD's running masses; e.g., the existence, and location if so, of a zero in the ratio of nucleon Sachs form factors are strongly influenced by…

Current matrix elements and observables for electro- and photo-excitation of baryons from the nucleon are studied in a light-front framework. Relativistic effects are estimated by comparison to a nonrelativistic model, where we use simple basis states to represent the baryon wavefunctions. Sizeable relativistic effects are found for certain transitions, for example, to radial excitations such as that conventionally used to describe to the Roper resonance. A systematic study shows that the violation of rotational covariance of the baryon transition matrix elements stemming from the use of one-b…
We examine the phase shifts and inelasticities associated with the $N^*(1440)$ Roper resonance and connect these infinite-volume observables to the finite-volume spectrum of lattice QCD using Hamiltonian effective field theory. We explore three hypotheses for the structure of the Roper resonance. All three hypotheses are able to describe the scattering data well. In the third hypothesis the Roper resonance couples the low-lying bare basis-state component associated with the ground state nucleon with the virtual meson-baryon contributions. Here the non-trivial superpositions of the meson-baryon…
Recent progress on the extraction of electromagnetic properties of nucleon resonance excitation through pion photo- and electroproduction is reviewed. Cross section data measured at MAMI, ELSA, and CEBAF are analyzed and compared to the analysis of other groups. On this basis, we derive longitudinal and transverse transition form factors for most of the four-star nucleon resonances. Furthermore, we discuss how the transition form factors can be used to obtain empirical transverse charge densities. Contour plots of the thus derived densities are shown for the Delta, Roper, S11, and D13 nucleon …
We study electromagnetic transitions of excited baryons in a deformed oscillator quark model, where baryon excited states are described as rotational bands of deformed intrinsic states. We describe all necessary tools to compute transition amplitudes in multipole basis, which are then related to the commonly used helicity amplitudes. We pay a special attention on the sign of the amplitudes as well as their absolute values by computing the photon and pion couplings simultaneously. We have found that the effect of deformation on the transition amplitudes is rather weak. The difficulty in reprodu…
The relevance of chiral symmetry in baryons is highlighted in three examples in the nucleon spectroscopy and structure. The first one is the importance of chiral dynamics in understanding the Roper resonance. The second one is the role of chiral symmetry in the lattice calculation of $πN σ$ term and strangeness. The third one is the role of chiral $U(1)$ anomaly in the anomalous Ward identity in evaluating the quark spin and the quark orbital angular momentum. Finally, the chiral effective theory for baryons is discussed.
Recent measurements of nucleon resonance transition form factors with CLAS at Jefferson Lab are discussed. The new data resolve a long-standing puzzle of the nature of the Roper resonance, and confirm the assertion of the symmetric constituent quark model of the Roper as the first radial excitation of the nucleon. The data on $nπ^+$ production at high $Q^2$ confirm the slow fall off of the $S_{11}(1535)$ transition form factor with $Q^2$, and better constrain the branching ratios $β_{Nπ}=0.50$ and $β_{Nη}=0.45$. Also, new results on the transition amplitudes for the $D_{13}(1520)$ resonance ar…
We discuss the analysis of data from piN elastic scattering and single pion photo- and electroproduction. The main focus is a study of low-lying non-strange baryon resonances. Here we concentrate on some difficulties associated with resonance identification, in particular the Roper and higher P11 states.
We address a question about how much resonance poles and residues extracted from data depend on a model used for the extraction, and on the precision of data. We focus on the P11 pi-N scattering and use the dynamical coupled-channel (DCC) model developed in Excited Baryon Analysis Center (EBAC) at JLab. We examine the model-dependence of the poles by varying parameters largely within the EBAC-DCC model. We find that two poles associated with the Roper resonance are fairly stable against the variation. We also study the stability of the Roper poles against different analytic structure of the P1…
Longitudinal and transverse transition form factors for most of the four-star nucleon resonances have been obtained from high-quality cross section data and polarization observables measured at MAMI, ELSA, BATES, GRAAL and CEBAF. As an application, we further show how the transition form factors can be used to obtain empirical transverse charge densities. Contour plots of the thus derived densities are shown and compared for the Roper and S11 nucleon resonances.
We present the results on P11 resonances obtained with Dubna-Mainz-Taipei (DMT) dynamical model for pion-nucleon scattering and pion electromagnetic production. The extracted values agree well, in general, with PDG values. One pole is found corresponding to the Roper resonance and two more resonances are definitely needed in DMT model. We further find indication for a narrow P11 resonance at around 1700 MeV with a width of around 50 MeV in both pi-N and gamma-pi reactions.
In Poincaré-covariant continuum treatments of the three valence-quark bound-state problem, the force behind dynamical chiral symmetry breaking also generates nonpointlike, interacting diquark correlations in the nucleon and its resonances. We detail the impact of these correlations on the electromagnetically-induced nucleon-$Δ$ and nucleon-Roper transitions, providing a flavour-separation of the latter and associated predictions that can be tested at modern facilities.
An important question about resonance extraction is how much resonance poles and residues extracted from data depend on a model used for the extraction, and on the precision of data. We address this question with the dynamical coupled-channel (DCC) model developed in Excited Baryon Analysis Center (EBAC) at JLab. We focus on the P11 pi-N scattering. We examine the model-dependence of the poles by varying parameters to a large extent within the EBAC-DCC model. We find that two poles associated with the Roper resonance are fairly stable against the variation. We also develop a model with a bare …
A possibility of the construction of a periodic table for the excited baryon spectrum is shown in the frame of a relativistic chiral quark model based on selection rules derived from the one-pion exchange mechanism. It is shown that all the $N^*$ and $Δ^*$ resonances appearing in the $πN$ scattering data and strongly coupling to the $πN$ channel are identified with the orbital configurations $(1S_{1/2})^2(nlj)$. Baryon resonances corresponding to the orbital configuration with two valence quarks in excited states couple strongly to the $ππN$-channel, but not to the $πN$ channel. At low energy …
In Poincaré-covariant continuum treatments of the three valence-quark bound-state problem, the force behind dynamical chiral symmetry breaking also generates nonpointlike, interacting diquark correlations in the nucleon and its resonances. We detail the impact of these correlations on the nucleon's elastic and nucleon-to-Roper transition electromagnetic form factors, providing flavour-separation versions that can be tested at modern facilities.
Current matrix elements and observables for electro- and photo-excitation of baryons from the nucleon are studied in a light-front framework. Relativistic effects are examined by comparison to a nonrelativistic model and can typically be of order 20-25%, but can be larger for certain matrix elements, such as radial transitions conventionally used to describe the Roper resonance. A systematic study shows that the violation of rotational covariance of the baryon transition matrix elements stemming from the use of one-body currents is generally small.
We study the pion-nucleon P_33 and P_11 scattering, where the Delta and the Roper resonances are seen, respectively. We use the Lippmann-Schwinger equation extended to couple to a one-body state, and investigate nature of these resonances by taking and omitting a one-baryon state into account. We see validity and puzzle of the standard quark model interpretation, for the Delta and the Roper resonances, respectively.
Associative photoproduction of $ω$-meson and $N^{*}(1440)$ on nucleons, $γ+N\toω+N^{*}(1440)$, in the near threshold region is investigated in a framework employing effective Lagrangians. Besides $π$-exchange in t-channel, baryon exchanges, i.e. N- and $N^{*}$-exchanges, in the s- and u-channels are also taken into account in calculations of differential cross-section and beam asymmetry. Important inputs of this model are the vector and tensor coupling constants of $ωNN^{*}(1440)$-vertex, which are assumed to be equal to the values of these couplings for $ωNN$ vertex. Using our previous estima…
We consider the role played by hyperfine mixing in electromagnetic and semileptonic decays of doubly heavy baryons, which give rise to large corrections to the decay widths in both cases.
Nucleon elastic and transition form factors are analyzed in the framework of a collective model of baryons. Effects of meson cloud couplings and relativistic corrections are considered.
We investigate the role of hyperfine mixing in the electromagnetic decay of ground state doubly heavy $bc$ baryons. As in the case of a previous calculation on $b\to c$ semileptonic decays of doubly heavy baryons, we find large corrections to the electromagnetic decay widths due to this mixing. Contrary to the weak case just mentioned, we find here that one can not use electromagnetic width relations obtained in the infinite heavy quark mass limit to experimentally extract information on the admixtures in a model independent way.
The electromagnetic properties of baryon octet are studied in the perturbative chiral quark model (PCQM). The relativistic quark wave function is extracted by fitting the theoretical results of the proton charge form factor to experimental data and the predetermined quark wave function is applied to study the electromagnetic form factors of other octet baryons as well as magnetic moments, charge and magnetic radii. The PCQM results are found, based on the predetermined quark wave function, in good agreement with experimental data.
Baryons are treated as three-quark systems using QCD degrees of freedom in Poincare-covariant bound-state equations. The quark self-energy as well as the interaction between quarks are approximated by a vector-vector interaction via a single dressed-gluon exchange (rainbow-ladder truncation), thereby allowing a unified study of quark, meson and baryon properties. Here we will focus on the calculation of electromagnetic properties of spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 ground state baryons.
The parameter-free predictions for the $N - P_{11}(1440)$ and $N - P_{33}(1232)$ electromagnetic transition form factors, obtained within our light-front constituent quark model using eigenfunctions of a baryon mass operator which includes a large amount of configuration mixing, are reported. The effects due to small components in the baryon wave functions, such as S'- and D-wave, are also investigated.
We present a simultaneous analysis of elastic and transition form factors of the nucleon. The calculations are performed in the framework of an algebraic model of baryons. Effects of meson cloud couplings are considered.
We explore the electromagnetic contribution to the charge symmetry breaking in the octet baryon masses using a subtracted dispersion relation based on the Cottingham formula. For the proton-neutron mass splitting we report a minor revision of the recent analysis of Walker-Loud, Carlson and Miller. For the electromagnetic structure of the hyperons we constrain our analysis, where possible, by a combination of lattice QCD and SU(3) symmetry breaking estimates. The results for the baryon mass splittings are found to be compatible with recent lattice QCD+QED determinations. The uncertainties in th…
In this contribution, we discuss the electromagnetic and weak decays of baryons in the unquenched quark model and show that the observed discrepancies between the experimental data and the predictions of the constituent quark model can be accounted for in large part by the effects of sea quarks. Finally, the obtained results are discussed in terms of flavor-symmetry breaking.
We briefly describe our relativistic quark-diquark model, developed within the framework of point form dynamics, which is the relativistic extension of the interacting quark-diquark model. In order to do that we have to show the main properties and quantum numbers of the effective degree of freedom of constituent diquark. Our results for the nonstrange baryon spectrum and for the nucleon electromagnetic form factors are discussed.
Decay properties of multi-strangeness $Ξ$ and $Ω$ baryon resonances are investigated within the constituent quark model by including relativistic corrections. The strong decay widths of various $Ξ$ and $Ω$ resonances are computed and tested for internal quark configurations to pin down their spin-parity ($J^P$) quantum numbers and internal structures. We found that the Roper-like resonances in the multi-strangeness sector have large decay widths bearing resemblances to their siblings in light and heavy baryon sectors. In addition, we obtained the decay ratio for the $Ω(2012)$ as $Γ{(Ω\to Ξ\bar…
We investigate the electromagnetic mass differences of SU(3) baryons, using an "model-independent approach" within a chiral soliton model. The electromagnetic self-energy corrections to the masses of the baryon are expressed as the baryonic two-point correlation function of the electromagnetic currents. Using the fact that the electromagnetic current can be treated as an octet operator, and considering possible irreducible representations of the correlation function, we are able to construct a general collective operator for the electromagnetic self-energies, which consists of three unknown pa…
