We generalize the work of Kabat and Lifshytz (arXiv:1703.06523), of reconstructing bulk scalar fields using the intersecting modular hamiltonian approach discussed therein, to any locally $AdS_3$ space related to $AdS_3$ by large diffeomorphisms. We present several checks for our result including matcing with their result in appropriate limits as well as consistency with bulk diffeomorphisms. As a further check, from our expressions we also compute the first correction due to gravitational dressing to the bulk scalar field in $AdS_3$ and match with known results in the literature.
We study several aspects of holographic entanglement in two models known as flat$_3$/BMSFT and (W)AdS$_3$/WCFT. These are two examples of holography beyond AdS/CFT where the the boundary field theories are not Lorentz invariant but still feature an infinite set of local symmetries. In the first example, BMS-invariant field theories (BMSFTs) are conjectured to provide a holographic description of quantum gravity in asymptotically flat three-dimensional spacetimes; while in the second example, warped conformal field theories (WCFTs) are proposed to describe quantum gravity in warped AdS$_3$ or A…
There has been renewed interest in the path-integral computation of the partition function of AdS3 gravity, both in the metric and Chern-Simons formulations. The one-loop partition function around Euclidean AdS3 turns out to be given by the vacuum character of Virasoro group. This stems from the work of Brown and Henneaux (BH) who showed that, in AdS3 gravity with sensible asymptotic boundary conditions, an infinite group of (improper) diffeomorphisms arises which acts canonically on phase space as two independent Virasoro symmetries. The gauge group turns out to be composed of so-called ``pro…
Nontrivial diffeomorphisms act on the horizon of a generic 4D black holes and create distinguishing features referred to as soft hair. Amongst these are a left-right pair of Virasoro algebras with associated charges that reproduce the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for Kerr black holes. In this paper we show that if one adds a negative cosmological constant, there is a similar set of infinitesimal diffeomorphisms that act non-trivially on the horizon. The algebra of these diffeomorphisms gives rise to a central charge. Adding a boundary counterterm, justified to achieve integrability, leads to wel…

In recent work we computed the path integral of three-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant on spaces which are topologically a torus times an interval. Here we employ a modular bootstrap to show that the amplitude is completely fixed by consistency conditions and a few basic inputs from gravity. This bootstrap is notably for an ensemble of CFTs, rather than for a single instance. We also compare the 3d gravity result with the Narain ensemble. The former is well-approximated at low temperature by a random matrix theory ansatz, and we conjecture that this behavior is generic f…
The Berry connection describes transformations induced by adiabatically varying Hamiltonians. We study how zero modes of the modular Hamiltonian are affected by varying the region that supplies the modular Hamiltonian. In the vacuum of a 2d CFT, global conformal symmetry singles out a unique modular Berry connection, which we compute directly and in the dual AdS$_3$ picture. In certain cases, Wilson loops of the modular Berry connection compute lengths of curves in AdS$_3$, reproducing the differential entropy formula. Modular Berry transformations can be measured by bulk observers moving with…
Bonus Symmetries of N=4 Super-Yang-Mills Correlation Functions via AdS Duality
According to the holographic picture of 't Hooft and Susskind, the black hole entropy, $S_{\rm BH}$, is carried by the chaotic microscopic degrees of freedom, that live in the near horizon geometry and have a Hilbert space of states of finite dimension, $d=\exp(S_{\rm BH})$. In previous work we have proposed that the near horizon geometry, when the microscopic degrees of freedom can be resolved, can be described by the discrete, finite, random geometry, AdS$_2[\mathbb{Z}_N]$, where $N$ is proportional to $S_{\rm BH}$. What had remained as an open problem was how the smooth AdS2 geometry can be…
We investigate the connection between spacetime wormholes and ensemble averaging in the context of higher spin AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$. Using techniques from modular bootstrap combined with some holographic inputs, we evaluate the partition function of a Euclidean wormhole in AdS$_3$ higher spin gravity. The fixed spin sectors of the dual CFT$_2$ exhibit features that starkly go beyond conventional random matrix ensembles: power-law ramps in the spectral form factor and potentials with a double-well/crest underlying the level statistics.
We test the effects of new diffeomorphism invariant boundary terms in SL(2,R)$\times$SL(2,R) Chern-Simons theory. The gravitational interpretation corresponds to free AdS$_3$ boundary conditions, without restrictions on the boundary geometry. The boundary theory is the theory of a string in a target AdS$_3$. Its Virasoro conditions can eliminate ghosts. Generalisations to SL(N,R)$\times$SL(N,R) higher spin theories and many other questions are still unexplored.
The bulk reconstructions in AdS/CFT and its cousins are essential to understand the holographic nature of quantum gravity. In this work, we try to study the bulk reconstruction in the AdS$_3$/WCFT$_2$ correspondence. After deriving the bulk-boundary propagator, which is different from the usual one in AdS/CFT, we define the bulk proto-scalar field by using the Virasoro-Kac-Moody symmetry in two different ways. One is to impose the bulk primary conditions on the field and construct the field algebraically. The other is to use the bulk-boundary vacuum OPE block, which can be read by applying the…
We study the non-zero eigenmodes for the modular Hamiltonian in the context of AdS$_3/$CFT$_2$. We show how to perturbatively construct zero eigenmodes for the modular Hamiltonian of the class of excited states constructed in Lashkari et al.(arxiv:1811.05052), using information about the vacuum non-zero eigen modular modes.
We study some aspects of a class of non-AdS holography where the 3d bulk gravity is given by Generalized Minimal Massive Gravity (GMMG). We consider the spacelike warped $AdS_3$ ($WAdS_3$) black hole solution of this model where the 2d dual boundary theory is the warped conformal field theory (WFCT). The charge algebra of the isometries in the bulk and the charge algebra of the vacuum symmetries at the boundary are compatible and this is an evidence for the duality conjecture. Further evidence for this duality is the equality of entanglement entropy and modular Hamiltonian on both sides of the…
In the framework of bulk reconstruction, we elucidate the relationship between the action of CFT modular Hamiltonians on bulk operators, the possible equation of motion for the bulk operators, and the charge distribution at infinity corresponding to such bulk fields. In particular for scalar fields interacting with gravity or with gauge fields, we show how CFT considerations of the action of the modular Hamiltonian constrain the possible bulk equation of motion to be consistent with bulk gauge invariance and diffeomorphism invariance. In fact we show that requiring that the action of the modul…
We derive a universal formula for the asymptotic growth of the mean value of three-point coefficient for Warped Conformal Field Theories (WCFTs), and provide a holographic calculation in BTZ black holes. WCFTs are two dimensional quantum field theories featuring a chiral Virasoro and U(1) Kac-Moody algebra, and are conjectured to be holographically dual to quantum gravity on asymptotically AdS$_3$ spacetime with Comp$\grave{\mathrm{e}}$re-Song-Strominger boundary conditions. The WCFT calculation amounts to the calculation of one-point functions on torus, whose high temperature limit can be app…
We study the structure of entanglement wedges in the Kasner-AdS geometry, which provides an example of AdS/CFT engineered cosmological singularity. We investigate the specific limitations of causal reconstruction methods, imposed by the presence of the cosmological singularities, and we show the supremacy of modular reconstruction. This model provides an example where modular reconstruction based on a proper operator subalgebra is more powerful than the strongest possible causal reconstruction, based on the complete operator algebra.
These lecture notes are based on a series of lectures given at the XIII Modave summer school in mathematical physics. We review the construction due to Hamilton, Kabat, Lifschytz and Lowe for reconstructing local bulk operators from CFT operators in the context of AdS/CFT and show how to recover bulk correlation functions from this definition. Building on the work of these authors, it has been noted that the bulk displays quantum error correcting properties. We will discuss tensor network toy models to exemplify these remarkable features. We will discuss the role of gauge invariance and of dif…
The scaling dimension of the first excited state in two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) satisfies a universal upper bound. Using the modular bootstrap, we extend this result to CFTs with $W_3$ algebras which are generically dual to higher spin theories in AdS$_3$. Assuming unitarity and modular invariance, we show that the conformal weights $h$, $\bar{h}$ of the lightest charged state satisfy $h < c/12 + O(1)$ and $\bar{h} < \bar{c}/12 + O(1)$ in the limit where the central charges $c$, $\bar{c}$ are large. Furthermore, we show that in this limit any consistent CFT with $W_3$ curre…
The modular Hamiltonian of reduced states, given essentially by the logarithm of the reduced density matrix, plays an important role within the AdS/CFT correspondence in view of its relation to quantum information. In particular, it is an essential ingredient for quantum information measures of distances between states, such as the relative entropy and the Fisher information metric. However, the modular Hamiltonian is known explicitly only for a few examples. For a family of states $ρ_λ$ that is parametrized by a scalar $λ$, the first order contribution in $\tildeλ=λ-λ_0$ of the modular Hamilt…
We study the action of the CFT total modular Hamiltonian on the CFT representation of bulk fields with spin. In the vacuum of the CFT the total modular Hamiltonian acts as a bulk Lie derivative, reducing on the RT surface to a boost perpendicular to the RT surface. This enables us to reconstruct bulk fields with spin from the CFT. On fields with gauge redundancies the total modular Hamiltonian acts as a bulk Lie derivative together with a compensating bulk gauge (or diffeomorphism) transformation to restore the original gauge. We consider the Lie algebra generated by the total modular Hamilton…

Instead of the work \cite{1} which in according to the Lovelock theorem it could not applicable for all types of 4D curved spacetimes of Einstein Gauss Bonnet (EGB) gravity, authors of the work \cite{2} applied break of diffeomorphism property to present a consistent EGB gravity theory. In this work we use the latter model by adding a nonlinear electromagnetic field lagrangian density to study affects of GB coupling constant into the thermodynamic phase transition and Joule Thomson (JT) adiabatic expansion of a 4D $dS/AdS$ GB Bardeen black hole.
In this work we study the Tomita-Takesaki construction for a family of excited states that, in a strongly coupled CFT - at large $N$-, correspond to coherent states in an asymptotically AdS spacetime geometry. We compute the modular flow and modular Hamiltonian associated to these excited states in the Rindler wedge and for a ball shaped entangling surface. Using holography, one can compute the bulk modular flow and construct the Tomita-Takesaki theory for these cases. We also discuss generalizations of the entanglement regions in the bulk and how to estimate the modular Hamiltonian in a large…
Recent works have suggested that the entanglement wedge of Hawking radiation coming from an AdS black hole, will include an island inside the black hole interior after the Page time. In this paper, we propose a concrete way to extract the information from the island by acting only on the radiation degrees of freedom, building on the equivalence between the boundary and bulk modular flow. We consider examples with black holes in JT gravity coupled to baths. In the case that the bulk conformal fields contain free massless fermion field, we provide explicit bulk picture of the information extract…
We introduce new tools for studying modular flow in AdS/CFT. These tools allow us to efficiently extract bulk information related to causality and locality. For example, we discuss the relation between analyticity in modular time and entanglement wedge nesting which can then be used to extract the location of the Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) surface directly from the boundary theory. Probing the RT surface close to the boundary our results reduce to the recent proof of the Quantum Null Energy Condition. We focus on heavy probe operators whose correlation functions are determined by spacelike geodesics.…
By looking at the Lovelock theorem one can infer that the gravity model given by \cite{GL} could not applicable for all type of 4D Einstein Gauss Bonnet (GB) curved spacetimes. Because in 4D space time the Gauss-Bonnet invariant is a total derivative, and hence it does not contribute to the gravitational dynamics. Hence, authors in the work \cite{AL} presented an alternative consistent EGB gravity model instead of \cite{GL} by applying break of diffeomorphism property. In this work we use it to produce a dS/AdS black hole metric and then investigate its thermodynamic behavior in presence of cl…
Kinematic space can be used as an intermediate step in the AdS/CFT dictionary and lends itself naturally to the description of diffeomorphism invariant quantities. From the bulk it has been defined as the space of boundary anchored geodesics, and from the boundary as the space of pairs of CFT points. When the bulk is not globally AdS$_3$ the appearance of non-minimal geodesics leads to ambiguities in these definitions. In this work conical defect spacetimes are considered as an example where non-minimal geodesics are common. From the bulk it is found that the conical defect kinematic space can…
We develop the representation of free spinor fields in the bulk of Lorentzian anti-de Sitter space in terms of smeared operators in the dual conformal field theory. To do this we expand the bulk field in a complete set of normalizable modes, work out the extrapolate dictionary for spinor fields, and show that the bulk field can be reconstructed from its near-boundary behavior. In some cases chirality and reality conditions can be imposed in the bulk. We study the action of the CFT modular Hamiltonian on bulk fermions to show that they transform with the expected spinor Lie derivative, and we c…
Using modular bootstrap we show the lightest primary fields of a unitary compact two dimensional conformal field theory(with $c, \bar{c}>1$) has a conformal weight $h_1\le \frac{c}{12}+\mathcal{O}(1)$.This implies that the upper bound on the dimension of the lightest primary fields depends on their spin. In particular if the set of lightest primary fields includes extremal or near extremal states whose spin to dimension ratio $\frac{j}Δ\approx 1$, the corresponding dimension is $Δ\le \frac{c}{12}+\mathcal{O}(1)$. From AdS/CFT correspondence, we obtain an upper bound on the spectrum of black ho…
