The Underactuated Lightweight Tensegrity Robotic Assistive Spine (ULTRA Spine) project is an ongoing effort to develop a flexible, actuated backbone for quadruped robots. In this work, model-predictive control is used to track a trajectory in the robot's state space, in simulation. The state trajectory used here corresponds to a bending motion of the spine, with translations and rotations of the moving vertebrae. Two different controllers are presented in this work: one that does not use a reference input but includes smoothing constrants, and a second one that uses a reference input without smoothing. For the smoothing controller, without reference inputs, the error converges to zero, while the simpler-to-tune controller with an input reference shows small errors but not complete convergence. It is expected that this controller will converge as it is improved further.
This paper presents a novel methodology to model and optimize trajectories of a quadrupedal robot with spinal compliance to improve standing jump performance compared to quadrupeds with a rigid spine. We introduce an elastic model for a prismatic robotic spine that is actively preloaded and mechanically lock-enabled at initial and maximum length, and develop a constrained trajectory optimization method to co-optimize the elastic parameters and motion trajectories toward enhanced jumping distance. Results reveal that a less stiff spring is likely to facilitate jumping performance not as a direc…

This paper proposes Elastic Tracker, a flexible trajectory planning framework that can deal with challenging tracking tasks with guaranteed safety and visibility. Firstly, an object detection and intension-free motion prediction method is designed. Then an occlusion-aware path finding method is proposed to provide a proper topology. A smart safe flight corridor generation strategy is designed with the guiding path. An analytical occlusion cost is evaluated. Finally, an effective trajectory optimization approach enables to generate a spatio-temporal optimal trajectory within the resultant fligh…
Robot arms with lighter weight can reduce unnecessary energy consumption which is desirable in robotic industry. However, lightweight arms undergo undesirable elastic deformation. In this paper, the planar motion of a lightweight flexible arm is investigated. In order to obtain a precise mathematical model, the axial displacement and nonlinear curvature of flexible arm arising from large bending deformation is taken into consideration. An in-extensional condition, the axial displacement is related to transverse displacement of the flexible beam, is applied. This leads to a robotic model with t…
Collaborative robots and space manipulators contain significant joint flexibility. It complicates the control design, compromises the control bandwidth, and limits the tracking accuracy. The imprecise knowledge of the flexible joint dynamics compounds the challenge. In this paper, we present a new control architecture for controlling flexible-joint robots. Our approach uses a multi-layer neural network to approximate unknown dynamics needed for the feedforward control. The network may be viewed as a linear-in-parameter representation of the robot dynamics, with the nonlinear basis of the robot…

Applying intelligent robot arms in dynamic uncertain environments (i.e., flexible production lines) remains challenging, which requires efficient algorithms for real time trajectory generation. The motion planning problem for robot trajectory generation is highly nonlinear and nonconvex, which usually comes with collision avoidance constraints, robot kinematics and dynamics constraints, and task constraints (e.g., following a Cartesian trajectory defined on a surface and maintain the contact). The nonlinear and nonconvex planning problem is computationally expensive to solve, which limits the …

This paper presents a novel trajectory planning method for aerial perching. Compared with the existing work, the terminal states and the trajectory durations can be adjusted adaptively, instead of being determined in advance. Furthermore, our planner is able to minimize the tangential relative speed on the premise of safety and dynamic feasibility. This feature is especially notable on micro aerial robots with low maneuverability or scenarios where the space is not enough. Moreover, we design a flexible transformation strategy to eliminate terminal constraints along with reducing optimization …
In this paper, a novel real-time acceleration-continuous path-constrained trajectory planning algorithm is proposed with an appealing built-in tradability mechanism between cruise motion and time-optimal motion. Different from existing approaches, the proposed approach smoothens time-optimal trajectories with bang-bang input structures to generate acceleration-continuous trajectories while preserving the completeness property. More importantly, a novel built-in tradability mechanism is proposed and embedded into the trajectory planning framework, so that the proportion of the cruise motion and…

This paper presents a two-step algorithm for online trajectory planning in indoor environments with unknown obstacles. In the first step, sampling-based path planning techniques such as the optimal Rapidly exploring Random Tree (RRT*) algorithm and the Line-of-Sight (LOS) algorithm are employed to generate a collision-free path consisting of multiple waypoints. Then, in the second step, constrained quadratic programming is utilized to compute a smooth trajectory that passes through all computed waypoints. The main contribution of this work is the development of a flexible trajectory planning f…
Motion planning for a multi-limbed climbing robot must consider the robot's posture, joint torques, and how it uses contact forces to interact with its environment. This paper focuses on motion planning for a robot that uses nontraditional locomotion to explore unpredictable environments such as martian caves. Our robotic concept, ReachBot, uses extendable and retractable booms as limbs to achieve a large reachable workspace while climbing. Each extendable boom is capped by a microspine gripper designed for grasping rocky surfaces. ReachBot leverages its large workspace to navigate around obst…
This paper addresses the problem of trajectory optimization for an unmanned surface vehicle while considering direction-dependent ocean currents and flexible refueling constraints. This work is motivated by the rising interest in developing autonomous navigation technology for commercial, scientific, and military applications for ocean-bound unmanned surface vehicles. Relevant literature on such vehicles has addressed energy-efficient trajectory optimization and time-efficient trajectory optimization. However, the application of trajectory optimization techniques which include refueling stops …
This paper proposes a nonlinear control architecture for flexible aircraft simultaneous trajectory tracking and load alleviation. By exploiting the control redundancy, the gust and maneuver loads are alleviated without degrading the rigid-body command tracking performance. The proposed control architecture contains four cascaded control loops: position control, flight path control, attitude control, and optimal multi-objective wing control. Since the position kinematics are not influenced by model uncertainties, the nonlinear dynamic inversion control is applied. On the contrary, the flight pa…
In this work we present a constructive method to design a family of virtual contraction based controllers that solve the standard trajectory tracking problem of flexible-joint robots (FJRs) in the port-Hamiltonian (pH) framework. The proposed design method, called virtual contraction based control (v-CBC), combines the concepts of virtual control systems and contraction analysis. It is shown that under potential energy matching conditions, the closed-loop virtual system is contractive and exponential convergence to a predefined trajectory is guaranteed. Moreover, the closed-loop virtual system…
In Model Predictive Control (MPC) formulations of trajectory tracking problems, infeasible reference trajectories and a-priori unknown constraints can lead to cumbersome designs, aggressive tracking, and loss of recursive feasibility. This is the case, for example, in trajectory tracking applications for mobile systems in the presence of constraints which are not fully known a-priori. In this paper, we propose a new framework called Model Predictive Flexible trajectory Tracking Control (MPFTC), which relaxes the trajectory tracking requirement. Additionally, we accommodate recursive feasibilit…
The objective of this work is to design a mechatronic bipedal robot with mobility in 3D environments. The designed robot has a total of six actuated degrees of freedom (DoF), each leg has two DoF located at the hip: one for abduction/adduction and another for thigh flexion/extension, and a third DoF at the knee for the shin flexion/extension. This robot is designed with point-feet legs to achieve a dynamic underactuated walking. Each actuator in the robot includes a DC gear motor, an encoder for position measurement, a flexible joint to form a series flexible actuator, and a feedback controlle…

This letter presents a new intelligent control scheme for the accurate trajectory tracking of flexible link manipulators. The proposed approach is mainly based on a sliding mode controller for underactuated systems with an embedded artificial neural network to deal with modeling inaccuracies. The adopted neural network only needs a single input and one hidden layer, which drastically reduces the computational complexity of the control law and allows its implementation in low-power microcontrollers. Online learning, rather than supervised offline training, is chosen to allow the weights of the …
