In this work we present a constructive method to design a family of virtual contraction based controllers that solve the standard trajectory tracking problem of flexible-joint robots (FJRs) in the port-Hamiltonian (pH) framework. The proposed design method, called virtual contraction based control (v-CBC), combines the concepts of virtual control systems and contraction analysis. It is shown that under potential energy matching conditions, the closed-loop virtual system is contractive and exponential convergence to a predefined trajectory is guaranteed. Moreover, the closed-loop virtual system exhibits properties such as structure preservation, differential passivity and the existence of (incrementally) passive maps.
This paper presents ConVex optimization-based Stochastic steady-state Tracking Error Minimization (CV-STEM), a new state feedback control framework for a class of Ito stochastic nonlinear systems and Lagrangian systems. Its innovation lies in computing the control input by an optimal contraction metric, which greedily minimizes an upper bound of the steady-state mean squared tracking error of the system trajectories. Although the problem of minimizing the bound is non-convex, its equivalent convex formulation is proposed utilizing state-dependent coefficient parameterizations of the nonlinear …
While the Artificial Pancreas is effective in regulating the blood glucose in the safe range of 70-180 mg/dl in type 1 diabetic patients, the high intra-patient variability, as well as exogenous meal disturbances, poses a serious challenge. The existing control algorithms thus require additional safety algorithms and feed-forward actions. Moreover, the unavailability of insulin sensors in Artificial Pancreas makes this task more difficult. In the present work, a subcutaneous model of type 1 diabetes (T1D) is considered for observer-based controller design in the framework of contraction analys…

Contraction theory formulates the analysis of nonlinear systems in terms of Jacobian matrices. Although this provides the potential to develop a linear matrix inequality (LMI) framework for nonlinear control design, conditions are imposed not on controllers but on their partial derivatives, which makes control design challenging. In this paper, we illustrate this so-called integrability problem can be solved by a non-standard use of Gaussian process regression (GPR) for parameterizing controllers and then establish an LMI framework of contraction-based control design for nonlinear discrete-tim…
The design of an observer-based state feedback (OBSF) controller with guaranteed passivity properties for port-Hamiltonian systems (PHS) is addressed using linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). The observer gain is freely chosen and the LMIs conditions such that the state feedback is equivalent to control by interconnection with an input strictly passive (ISP) and/or an output strictly passive (OSP) and zero state detectable (ZSD) port-Hamiltonian controller are established. It is shown that the proposed controller exponentially stabilizes a class of infinite-dimensional PHS and asymptotically st…
We present a new fixed-order H-infinity controller design method for potentially large-scale port-Hamiltonian (pH) plants. Our method computes controllers that are also pH (and thus passive) such that the resulting closed-loop systems is again passive, which ensures closed-loop stability simply from the structure of the plant and controller matrices. In this way, we can avoid computationally expensive eigenvalue computations that would otherwise be necessary. In combination with a sample-based objective function which allows us to avoid multiple evaluations of the H-infinity norm (which is typ…

In this paper, we solve the problem of finding a certified control policy that drives a robot from any given initial state and under any bounded disturbance to the desired reference trajectory, with guarantees on the convergence or bounds on the tracking error. Such a controller is crucial in safe motion planning. We leverage the advanced theory in Control Contraction Metric and design a learning framework based on neural networks to co-synthesize the contraction metric and the controller for control-affine systems. We further provide methods to validate the convergence and bounded error guara…
Nonlinear stabilization using control contraction metric (CCM) method usually involves an online optimization problem to compute a minimal geodesic (a shortest path) between pair of states, which is not desirable for real-time applications. This paper introduces a continuous-time dynamic realization which distributes the computational cost of the optimization problem over the time domain. The basic idea is to force the internal state of the dynamic controller to converge to a geodesic using covariant derivative information. A numerical example illustrates the proposed approach.
We present a method for contraction-based feedback motion planning of locally incrementally exponentially stabilizable systems with unknown dynamics that provides probabilistic safety and reachability guarantees. Given a dynamics dataset, our method learns a deep control-affine approximation of the dynamics. To find a trusted domain where this model can be used for planning, we obtain an estimate of the Lipschitz constant of the model error, which is valid with a given probability, in a region around the training data, providing a local, spatially-varying model error bound. We derive a traject…
Feedback controllers for port-Hamiltonian systems reveal an intrinsic inverse optimality property since each passivating state feedback controller is optimal with respect to some specific performance index. Due to the nonlinear port-Hamiltonian system structure, however, explicit (forward) methods for optimal control of port-Hamiltonian systems require the generally intractable analytical solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. Adaptive dynamic programming methods provide a means to circumvent this issue. However, the few existing approaches for port-Hamiltonian systems hinge on very…
An observer-based boundary controller for infinite-dimensional port-Hamiltonian systems defined on 1D spatial domains is proposed. The design is based on an early-lumping approach in which a finite-dimensional approximation of the infinite-dimensional system derived by spatial discretization is used to design the observer and the controller. As long as the finite-dimensional approximation approaches the infinite-dimensional model, the performances also do. The main contribution is a constructive method which guarantees that the interconnection between the controller and the infinite-dimensiona…

In this paper we address the problem of tracking control of nonlinear systems via contraction analysis. The necessary conditions of the systems which can achieve universal asymptotic tracking are studied under several different cases. We show the links to the well developed control contraction metric, as well as its invariance under dynamic extension. In terms of these conditions, we identify a differentially detectable output, based on which a simple differential controller for trajectory tracking is designed via damping injection. As illustration we apply to electrostatic microactuators.
Lyapunov stability theory is the bedrock of direct adaptive control. Fundamentally, Lyapunov stability requires constructing a distance-like function which must decrease with time to ensure stability. Feedback linearization, backstepping, and sum-of-squares optimization are common approaches for constructing such a distance function, but require the system to possess certain inherent/structural properties or involves solving a non-convex optimization problem. These restrictions/complexities arise because Lyapunov stability theory relies on constructing an explicit distance function. This work …
This paper presents a new passivity property for distributed piezoelectric devices with integrable port-variables. We present two new control methodologies by exploiting the integrability property of the port-variables. The derived controllers have a Proportional-Integral (PI) like structure. Finally, we present the simulation results and in-depth analysis on the tuning gains explaining their transient and steady-state behaviors.

Learning-enabled control systems have demonstrated impressive empirical performance on challenging control problems in robotics, but this performance comes at the cost of reduced transparency and lack of guarantees on the safety or stability of the learned controllers. In recent years, new techniques have emerged to provide these guarantees by learning certificates alongside control policies -- these certificates provide concise, data-driven proofs that guarantee the safety and stability of the learned control system. These methods not only allow the user to verify the safety of a learned cont…
In this paper, we present a virtual control contraction metric (VCCM) based nonlinear parameter-varying (NPV) approach to design a state-feedback controller for a control moment gyroscope (CMG) to track a user-defined trajectory set. This VCCM based nonlinear stabilization and performance synthesis approach, which is similar to linear parameter-varying (LPV) control approaches, allows to achieve exact guarantees of exponential stability and $\mathcal{L}_2$-gain performance on nonlinear systems with respect to all trajectories from the predetermined set, which is not the case with the conventio…

One of the major challenges of voltage stabilization in converter-based DC microgrids are the multiple interacting units displaying intermittent supply behavior. In this paper, we address this by a decentralized scalable, plug-and-play voltage controller for voltage-source converters (VSCs) at primary level. In contrast to existing approaches, we follow a systematic and constructive design based on port-Hamiltonian systems (PHSs) which does neither require the heuristic proposition of a Lyapunov function nor the computation of auxilliary variables such as time-derivatives. By employing the Ham…

We present $\mathcal{CL}_1$-$\mathcal{GP}$, a control framework that enables safe simultaneous learning and control for systems subject to uncertainties. The two main constituents are contraction theory-based $\mathcal{L}_1$ ($\mathcal{CL}_1$) control and Bayesian learning in the form of Gaussian process (GP) regression. The $\mathcal{CL}_1$ controller ensures that control objectives are met while providing safety certificates. Furthermore, $\mathcal{CL}_1$-$\mathcal{GP}$ incorporates any available data into a GP model of uncertainties, which improves performance and enables the motion planner…
Model predictive control (MPC) has become the most widely used advanced control method in process industry. In many cases, forecasts of the disturbances are available, e.g., predicted renewable power generation based on weather forecast. While the predictions of disturbances may not be accurate, utilizing the information can significantly improve the control performance in response to the disturbances. By exploiting process and disturbance models, future system behaviour can be predicted and used to optimise control actions via minimisation of an economical cost function which incorporates the…
This paper presents a new deep learning-based framework for robust nonlinear estimation and control using the concept of a Neural Contraction Metric (NCM). The NCM uses a deep long short-term memory recurrent neural network for a global approximation of an optimal contraction metric, the existence of which is a necessary and sufficient condition for exponential stability of nonlinear systems. The optimality stems from the fact that the contraction metrics sampled offline are the solutions of a convex optimization problem to minimize an upper bound of the steady-state Euclidean distance between…
We introduce a versatile framework to model and study networked control systems (NCSs). An NCS is described as a feedback interconnection of a plant and a controller communicating through a bidirectional channel modelled by cascaded nonlinear two-port networks. This model is sufficiently rich to capture various properties of a real-world communication channel, such as distortion, interference, and nonlinearity. Uncertainties in the plant, controller and communication channels can be handled simultaneously in the framework. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the robust finite-g…
Accuracy and stability are common requirements for Quadrotor trajectory tracking systems. Designing an accurate and stable tracking controller remains challenging, particularly in unknown and dynamic environments with complex aerodynamic disturbances. We propose a Quantile-approximation-based Distributional-reinforced Uncertainty Estimator (QuaDUE) to accurately identify the effects of aerodynamic disturbances, i.e., the uncertainties between the true and estimated Control Contraction Metrics (CCMs). Taking inspiration from contraction theory and integrating the QuaDUE for uncertainties, our n…
We present a motion planning algorithm for a class of uncertain control-affine nonlinear systems which guarantees runtime safety and goal reachability when using high-dimensional sensor measurements (e.g., RGB-D images) and a learned perception module in the feedback control loop. First, given a dataset of states and observations, we train a perception system that seeks to invert a subset of the state from an observation, and estimate an upper bound on the perception error which is valid with high probability in a trusted domain near the data. Next, we use contraction theory to design a stabil…
In this work, we propose a new passivity-based sliding mode control method for mechanical port-Hamiltonian systems. Passivity-based sliding mode control (PBSMC) is unification of sliding mode control and passivity-based control. It achieves sliding mode control and Lyapunov stability simultaneously by employing an energy based Lyapunov function. The proposed method gives a family of stabilizing controllers which smoothly interpolates passivity-based control and sliding mode control with free parameters. The freedom is useful to adjust the trade-off between robustness against external disturban…
