Modern Lightweight robots are constructed to be collaborative, which often results in a low structural stiffness compared to conventional rigid robots. Therefore, the controller must be able to handle the dynamic oscillatory effect mainly due to the intrinsic joint elasticity. Singular perturbation theory makes it possible to decompose the flexible joint dynamics into fast and slow subsystems. This model separation provides additional features to incorporate future knowledge of the jointlevel dynamical behavior within the controller design using the Model Predictive Control (MPC) technique. In this study, different architectures are considered that combine the method of Singular Perturbation and MPC. For Singular Perturbation, the parameters that influence the validity of using this technique to control a flexible-joint robot are investigated. Furthermore, limits on the input constraints for the future trajectory are considered with MPC. The position control performance and robustness against external forces of each architecture are validated experimentally for a flexible joint robot.
This paper uses Model Predictive Control (MPC) to optimise the input torques of a Three-Degrees-of-Freedom (DOF) robotic arm, enabling it to operate to the target position and grasp the object accurately. A monocular camera is firstly used to recognise the colour and depth of the object. Then, the inverse kinematics calculation and the spatial coordinates of the object through coordinate transformation are combined to get the required rotating angle of each servo. Finally, the dynamic model of the robotic arm structure is derived and the model predictive control is applied to simulate the opti…

This paper presents an offset-free model predictive controller for fast and accurate control of a spherical soft robotic arm. In this control scheme, a linear model is combined with an online disturbance estimation technique to systematically compensate model deviations. Dynamic effects such as material relaxation resulting from the use of soft materials can be addressed to achieve offset-free tracking. The tracking error can be reduced by 35% when compared to a standard model predictive controller without a disturbance compensation scheme. The improved tracking performance enables the realiza…

In this paper, we propose a novel framework on force-and-moment-based Model Predictive Control (MPC) for dynamic legged robots. Specifically, we present a formulation of MPC designed for 10 degree-of-freedom (DoF) bipedal robots using simplified rigid body dynamics with input forces and moments. This MPC controller will calculate the optimal inputs applied to the robot, including 3-D forces and 2-D moments at each foot. These desired inputs will then be generated by mapping these forces and moments to motor torques of 5 actuators on each leg. We evaluate our proposed control design on physical…

Legged robots can traverse challenging terrain, use perception to plan their safe foothold positions, and navigate the environment. Such unique mobility capabilities make these platforms a perfect candidate for scenarios such as search and rescue, inspection, and exploration tasks. While traversing through such terrains, the robot's instability is a significant concern. Many times the robot needs to switch gaits depending on its environment. Due to the complex dynamics of quadruped robots, classical PID control fails to provide high stability. Thus, there is a need for advanced control methods…

One of the key benefits of model predictive control is the capability of controlling a system proactively in the sense of taking the future system evolution into account. However, often external disturbances or references are not a priori known, which renders the predictive controllers shortsighted or uninformed. Adaptive prediction models can be used to overcome this issue and provide predictions of these signals to the controller. In this work we propose to learn references via Gaussian processes for model predictive controllers. To illustrate the approach, we consider robot assisted surgery…
In this paper, a control algorithm for guiding a two wheeled mobile robot with unknown inertia to a desired point and orientation using an Adaptive Model Predictive Control (AMPC) framework is presented. The two wheeled mobile robot is modeled as a knife edge or a skate with nonholonomic kinematic constraints and the dynamical equations are derived using the Lagrangian approach. The inputs at every time instant are obtained from Model Predictive Control (MPC) with a set of nominal parameters which are updated using a recursive least squares algorithm. The efficacy of the algorithm is demonstra…

This paper reports on a new error-state Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach to connected matrix Lie groups for robot control. The linearized tracking error dynamics and the linearized equations of motion are derived in the Lie algebra. Moreover, given an initial condition, the linearized tracking error dynamics and equations of motion are globally valid and evolve independently of the system trajectory. By exploiting the symmetry of the problem, the proposed approach shows faster convergence of rotation and position simultaneously than the state-of-the-art geometric variational MPC based o…

This paper presents a sample-efficient data-driven method to design model predictive control (MPC) for cable-actuated soft robotics using Bayesian optimization. Instead of modeling the complex dynamics of the soft robots, the proposed approach uses Bayesian optimization to search the best-guessed low-dimensional prediction model and its associated controller to minimize the objective function of closed-loop responses. The prediction model is updated by Bayesian optimization from the closed-loop input-output data in each iteration. A linear MPC is then designed based on the updated prediction m…

Loss of mobility or balance resulting from neural trauma is a critical consideration in public health. Robotic exoskeletons hold great potential for rehabilitation and assisted movement, yet optimal assist-as-needed (AAN) control remains unresolved given pathological variance among patients. We introduce a model predictive control (MPC) architecture for lower limb exoskeletons centred around a fuzzy logic algorithm (FLA) identifying modes of assistance based on human involvement. Assistance modes are: 1) passive for human relaxed and robot dominant, 2) active-assist for human cooperation with …

The outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) has caused mortality and morbidity worldwide. Oropharyngeal-swab (OP-swab) sampling is widely used for the diagnosis of COVID-19 in the world. To avoid the clinical staff from being affected by the virus, we developed a 9-degree-of-freedom (DOF) rigid-flexible coupling (RFC) robot to assist the COVID-19 OP-swab sampling. This robot is composed of a visual system, UR5 robot arm, micro-pneumatic actuator and force-sensing system. The robot is expected to reduce risk and free up the clinical staff from the long-term repetitive sampling work. …

We propose a learning-supported model predictive force and motion control scheme that provides stochastic safety guarantees while adapting to changing situations. Gaussian processes are used to learn the uncertain relations that map the robot's states to the forces and moments. The model predictive controller uses these Gaussian process models to achieve pre…

This paper presents a framework that combines trajectory optimization and model predictive control to perform robust and consecutive jumping on stepping stones. In our approach, we first utilize trajectory optimization based on full-nonlinear dynamics of the robot to generate periodic jumping trajectories for various jumping distances. A jumping controller based on a model predictive control is then designed for realizing smooth jumping tr…

Voxel-based structures provide a modular, mechanically flexible periodic lattice which can be used as a soft robot through internal deformations. To engage these structures for robotic tasks, we use a finite element method to characterize the motion caused by deforming single degrees of freedom and develop a reduced kinematic model. We find that node translations propagate periodically along geometric planes within the lattice, and briefly show that translational modes dominate the energy usage of the actuators. The resulting kinematic model frames the structural deformations in terms of user-…
This letter presents a new predictive control architecture for high-dimensional robotic systems. As opposed to a conventional Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach to locomotion that formulates a hierarchical sequence of optimization problems, the proposed work formulates a single optimization problem posed over a hierarchy of models, and is thus named Model Hierarchy Predictive Control (MHPC). MHPC is formulated as a multi-phase receding-horizon Trajectory Optimization (TO) problem, and can be implemented using any general multi-phase TO solver. MHPC is benchmarked in simulation on a quadru…

We introduce a real-time, constrained, nonlinear Model Predictive Control for the motion planning of legged robots. The proposed approach uses a constrained optimal control algorithm known as SLQ. We improve the efficiency of this algorithm by introducing a multi-processing scheme for estimating value function in its backward pass. This pass has been often calculated as a single process. This parallel SLQ algorithm can optimize longer time horizons without proportional increase in its computation time. Thus, our MPC algorithm can generate optimized trajectories for the next few phases of the m…

A common approach to the generation of walking patterns for humanoid robots consists in adopting a layered control architecture. This paper proposes an architecture composed of three nested control loops. The outer loop exploits a robot kinematic model to plan the footstep positions. In the mid layer, a predictive controller generates a Center of Mass trajectory according to the well-known table-cart model. Through a whole-body inverse kinematics algorithm, we can define joint references for position controlled walking. The outcomes of these two loops are then interpreted as inputs of a stack-…

Like its biological prototypes, this basic component is robust to parameter variation but can be modulated by external inputs. By combining these modules, we can construct a neural state machine capable of generating the cyclic or repetitive behaviors necessary for legged locomotion. A concrete case study for the approach is provided by a modular robot constructed from flexible plastic volumetric pixels, in which we produce a forward c…

Many robotic applications that are critical for robot performance require immediate feedback, hence execution time is a critical concern. Furthermore, it is common that robots come with a fixed quantity of hardware resources; if an application requires more computational resources than the robot can accommodate, its onboard execution might be extended to a degree that degrades the robot performance. Cloud computing, on the other hand, features on-demand computational resources; by enabling robots to leverage those resources, application execution time can be reduced. The key to enabling robot …
Controlling soft robots with precision is a challenge due in large part to the difficulty of constructing models that are amenable to model-based control design techniques. Koopman Operator Theory offers a way to construct explicit linear dynamical models of soft robots and to control them using established model-based linear control methods. This method is data-driven, yet unlike other data-driven models such as neural networks, it yields an explicit control-oriented linear model rather than just a "black-box" input-output mapping. This work describes this Koopman-based system identification …

We analytically show that by specially designing the MPC controller, the time-varying, linearized system can yield asymptotic stability around the origin in the tracking task. We further propose two obstacle avoidance methods. We show that by defining linearized constraint in velocity-space and explicitly coupling the two control inputs based on current state, our second me…
