In a nonlinear theory, such as gravity, physically relevant solutions are usually hard to find. Therefore, starting from a background exact solution with symmetries, one uses the perturbation theory, which albeit approximately, provides a lot of information regarding a physical solution. But even this approximate information comes with a price: the basic premise of a perturbative solution is that it should be improvable. Namely, by going to higher order perturbation theory, one should be able to improve and better approximate the physical problem or the solution. While this is often the case in many theories and many background solutions, there are important cases where the linear perturbation theory simply fails for various reasons. This issue is well known in the context of general relativity through the works that started in the early 1970s, but it has only been recently studied in modified gravity theories. This thesis is devoted to the study of linearization instability in generic gravity theories where there are spurious solutions to the linearized equations which do not come from the linearization of possible exact solutions. For this purpose we discuss the Taub charges, the ADT charges and the quadratic constraints on the linearized solutions. We give the three dimensional chiral gravity and the $D$ dimensional critical gravity as explicit examples and give a detailed ADM analysis of the topologically massive gravity with a cosmological constant.
We construct the gauge-invariant electric and magnetic charges in Yang-Mills theory coupled to cosmological General Relativity (or any other geometric gravity), extending the flat spacetime construction of Abbott and Deser. For non-vanishing background gauge fields, the charges receive non-trivial contribution from the gravity part. In addition, we study the constraints on the first order perturbation theory and establish the conditions for linearization instability: that is the validity of the first order perturbation theory.
Carrying out an analysis of the constraints and their linearizations on a spacelike hypersurface, we show that topologically massive gravity has a linearization instability at the chiral gravity limit about $AdS_3$. We also calculate the symplectic structure for all the known perturbative modes (including the log-mode) for the linearized field equations and find it to be degenerate (non-invertible) hence these modes do not approximate exact solutions and so do not belong to the linearized phase space of the theory. Naive perturbation theory fails: the linearized field equations are necessary b…
In general relativity, perturbation theory about a background solution fails if the background spacetime has a Killing symmetry and a compact spacelike Cauchy surface. This failure, dubbed as {\it linearization instability}, shows itself as non-integrability of the perturbative infinitesimal deformation to a finite deformation of the background. Namely, the linearized field equations have spurious solutions which cannot be obtained from the linearization of exact solutions. In practice, one can show the failure of the linear perturbation theory by showing that a certain quadratic (integral) co…
Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories can be characterized by a non-local and non-linear transformation of the bosonic fields (Nicolai map) mapping the interacting functional measure to that of a free theory, such that the Jacobi determinant of the transformation equals the product of the fermionic determinants obtained by integrating out the gauginos and ghosts at least on the gauge hypersurface. While this transformation has been known so far only for the Landau gauge and to third order in the Yang-Mills coupling, we here extend the construction to a large class of (possibly non-linear and non-…
We study linear perturbations about static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions with stealth scalar hair in degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories. We clarify master variables and derive the quadratic Lagrangian for both odd- and even-parity perturbations. It is shown that the even modes are in general plagued by gradient instabilities, or otherwise the perturbations would be strongly coupled. Several possible ways out are also discussed.
Recently it was pointed out that in shift-symmetric scalar-tensor theories a black hole can have nontrivial scalar hair which depends linearly on time. We develop black hole perturbation theory for such solutions and compute the quadratic action of odd-parity perturbations. We show that around all the solutions known so far with such time-dependent scalar hair the perturbations trigger instabilities or are presumably strongly coupled.
We investigate the stability analysis of Schwarzschild black hole in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (ESGB) theory because the instability of Schwarzschild black hole without scalar hair implies the Gauss-Bonnet black hole with scalar hair. The linearized scalar equation is compared to the Lichnerowicz-Ricci tensor equation in the Einstein-Weyl gravity. It turns out that the instability of Schwarzschild black hole in ESGB theory is interpreted as not the tachyonic instability, but the Gregory-Laflamme instability of black string. In the small mass regime of $1/λ<1.174/r_+$, the Schwarzschild solu…
Supersymmetric gauge theories are characterized by the existence of a transformation of the bosonic fields (Nicolai map) such that the Jacobi determinant of the transformation equals the product of the Matthews-Salam-Seiler and Faddeev-Popov determinants. This transformation had been worked out to second order in the coupling constant. In this paper, we extend this result (and the framework itself) to third order in the coupling constant. A diagrammatic approach in terms of tree diagrams, aiming to extend this map to arbitrary orders, is outlined. This formalism bypasses entirely the use of an…
Shift-symmetric Horndeski theories admit an interesting class of Schwarzschild black hole solutions exhibiting time-dependent scalar hair. By making use of Lemaître coordinates, we analyze perturbations around these types of black holes, and demonstrate that scalar perturbations around black hole backgrounds inevitably have gradient instabilities. Taken together with previously established results, this newly-discovered instability rules out black holes with time-dependent scalar hair in Horndeski theories.
It is expected that the Gregory-Laflamme (GL) instability in the black string in gravity is related to the Rayleigh-Plateau instability in fluid mechanics. Especially, the orders of the phase transitions associated with these instabilities depend on the number of the transverse space dimensions, and they are of first and second order below and above the critical dimension. Through the gauge-gravity correspondence, the GL instability is conjectured to be thermodynamically related to the Hagedorn instability in large-N gauge theories, and it leads to a prediction that the order of the confinemen…
Perturbations and eikonal instabilities of black holes and branes in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory and its Lovelock generalization were considered in the literature for several particular cases, where the asymptotic conditions (flat, dS, AdS), the number of spacetime dimensions $D$, non-vanishing coupling constants ($α_1$, $α_2$, $α_3$ etc.) and other parameters have been chosen in a specific way. Here we give a comprehensive analysis of the eikonal instabilities of black holes and branes for the \emph{most general} Lovelock theory, not limited by any of the above cases. Although the part o…
In a subclass of scalar-tensor theories, it has been shown that standard general relativity solutions of neutron stars and black holes with trivial scalar field profiles are unstable. Such an instability leads to solutions which are different from those of general relativity and have non-trivial scalar field profiles, in a process called scalarization. In the present work we focus on scalarization due to a non-minimal coupling of the scalar field to the Gauss-Bonnet curvature invariant. The coupling acts as a tachyonic mass for the scalar mode, thus leading to the instability of general relati…
Theories with higher order time derivatives generically suffer from ghost-like instabilities, known as Ostrogradski instabilities. This fate can be avoided by considering "degenerate" Lagrangians, whose kinetic matrix cannot be inverted, thus leading to constraints between canonical variables and a reduced number of physical degrees of freedom. In this work, we derive in a systematic way the degeneracy conditions for scalar-tensor theories that depend quadratically on second order derivatives of a scalar field. We thus obtain a classification of all degenerate theories within this class of sca…
We consider generalized Galileon theories within general relativity in four-dimensional space-time. We provide the argument showing that the generalized Galileons described by a wide class of Lagrangians do not admit stable, static, spherically symmetric semi-closed worlds. We also show that in a class of theories with $p_{\perp} = - ρ$ (where $p_{\perp}$ is transverse pressure and $ρ$ is energy density), semi-closed worlds, if exist, would be observed as objects of negative mass.
In theories with higher time derivatives, the Hamiltonian analysis of Ostrogradsky predicts an instability. However, this Hamiltonian treatment does not correspond the way that these theories are treated in quantum field theory, and the instability may be avoided in at least some cases. We present a very simple model which illustrates these features.
The first-order relativistic fluid theories of dissipation proposed by Eckart and Landau-Lifshitz have been proved to be unstable. They admit solutions which start in proximity of equilibrium and depart exponentially from it. We show that this behaviour is due to the fact that the total entropy of these fluids, restricted to the dynamically accessible states, has no upper bound. As a result, these systems have the tendency to constantly change according to the second law of thermodynamics and the unstable modes represent the directions of growth of the entropy in state space. We, then, verify …
We investigate the vacuum instability in the presence of dilaton field in a holographic set up. Although the dilaton is a bulk field, it leads to the vacuum instability on the boundary. We show that the whole process crucially depends on the probe brane position and as well on the radial coordinate. So that the effects of dilaton scale parameter in different regions of the bulk or for different probe brane positions are different. We also observe that in our study the temperature can strengthen the effect of scale parameter in reducing the potential barrier. Finally, we show that this Schwinge…
Recently modified gravitational theories which mimic the behaviour of dark matter, the so-called "Mimetic Dark Matter", have been proposed. We study the consistency of such theories with respect to the absence of ghost instability and propose a new tensor-vector-scalar theory of gravity, which is a generalization of the previous models of mimetic dark matter with additional desirable features. The original model proposed by Chamseddine and Mukhanov [JHEP 1311 (2013) 135, arXiv:1308.5410] is concluded to describe a regular pressureless dust, presuming that we consider only those configurations …
We give a detailed review of construction of conserved quantities in extended theories of gravity for asymptotically maximally symmetric spacetimes and carry out explicit computations for various solutions. Our construction is based on the Killing charge method, and a proper discussion of the conserved charges of extended gravity theories with this method requires studying the corresponding charges in Einstein's theory with or without a cosmological constant. Hence we study the ADM charges (in the asymptotically flat case but in generic viable coordinates), the AD charges (in generic Einstein …
We revisit the problem of the bulk-boundary unitarity clash in 2 + 1 dimensional gravity theories, which has been an obstacle in providing a viable dual two-dimensional conformal field theory for bulk gravity in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. Chiral gravity, which is a particular limit of cosmological topologically massive gravity (TMG), suffers from pertur- bative log-modes with negative energies inducing a non-unitary logarithmic boundary field theory. We show here that any f(R) extension of TMG does not improve the situation. We also study the perturbative modes in the metric formulation o…
We study the problem of the instability of inhomogeneous radiation universes in quadratic lagrangian theories of gravity written as a system of evolution equations with constraints. We construct formal series expansions and show that the resulting solutions have a smaller number of arbitrary functions than that required in a general solution. These results continue to hold for more general polynomial extensions of general relativity.
We analyze the mode stability of odd-parity perturbations of black holes with linearly time-dependent scalar hair in shift-symmetric Horndeski theories. We show that a large class of black hole solutions in these theories suffer from ghost or gradient instability, while there are some classes of solutions that are stable under linear odd-parity perturbations in the context of mode analysis.
In the context of classical mechanics, we study the conditions under which higher-order derivative theories can evade the so-called Ostrogradsky instability. More precisely, we consider general Lagrangians with second order time derivatives, of the form $L(\ddotϕ^a,\dotϕ^a,ϕ^a;\dot q^i,q^i)$ with $a = 1,\cdots, n$ and $i = 1,\cdots, m$. For $n=1$, assuming that the $q^i$'s form a nondegenerate subsystem, we confirm that the degeneracy of the kinetic matrix eliminates the Ostrogradsky instability. The degeneracy implies, in the Hamiltonian formulation of the theory, the existence of a primary c…
Multitrace Deformations of Vector and Adjoint Theories and their Holographic Duals
The no-hair theorem postulates that the only externally observable properties of a black hole are its mass, its electric charge, and its angular momentum. In scalar-tensor theories of gravity, a matter distribution around a black hole can lead to the so called "spontaneous scalarisation" instability that triggers the development of scalar hair. In the Brans-Dicke type theories, this effect can be understood as a result of tachyonic effective mass of the scalar field. Here we consider the instability in the generalised class of scalar-theories that feature non-conformal, i.e. "disformal", coupl…
We discuss spacetime instability for effective field theories of quantum gravity. The effective action of gravity introduces infinite higher derivative curvature terms $R^{2}, { R }_{ μν}{ R }^{ μν}, R_{μνκλ} R^{μνκλ}\dots$. Although these higher derivative curvature terms are indispensable to construct the self-consistent renormalizable theory of quantum gravity, they lead to several pathologies. We clearly show that even if they are written as the Planck-suppressed operators they lead to serious consequences and and de Sitter or radiation-dominated Universe is highly unstable. We show that t…
The linearization of semiclassical theories of gravity is investigated in a toy model, consisting of a quantum scalar field in interaction with a second classical scalar field which plays the role of a classical background. This toy model mimics also the evolution induced by semiclassical Einstein equations, such as the one which describes the early universe in the cosmological case. The equations governing the dynamics of linear perturbations around simple exact solutions of this toy model are analyzed by constructing the corresponding retarded fundamental solutions, and by discussing the cor…
We consider a gauge theory on the 5-d $κ$-Minkowski which can be viewed as the noncommutative analog of a $U(1)$ gauge theory. We show that the Hermiticity condition obeyed by the gauge potential $A_μ$ is necessarily twisted. Performing a BRST gauge-fixing with a Lorentz-type gauge, we carry out a first exploration of the one loop quantum properties of this gauge theory. We find that the gauge-fixed theory gives rise to a non-vanishing tadpole for the time component of the gauge potential, while there is no non-vanishing tadpole 1-point function for the spatial components of $A_μ$. This signal…
We prove the instability of $d$-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) having in the operator-product expansion of two fundamental fields a primary operator of scaling dimension $h=d/2+i r$, with non-vanishing $ r\in\mathbb{R}$. From an AdS/CFT point of view, this corresponds to a well-known tachyonic instability, associated to a violation of the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound in AdS${}_{d+1}$; we derive it here directly for generic $d$-dimensional CFTs that can be obtained as limits of multiscalar quantum field theories, by applying the harmonic analysis for the Euclidean conformal group t…
