We develop a combinatorial rigidity theory for symmetric bar-joint frameworks in a general finite dimensional normed space. In the case of rotational symmetry, matroidal Maxwell-type sparsity counts are identified for a large class of $d$-dimensional normed spaces (including all $\ell^p$ spaces with $p\not=2$). Complete combinatorial characterisations are obtained for half-turn rotation in the $\ell^1$ and $\ell^\infty$-plane. As a key tool, a new Henneberg-type inductive construction is developed for the matroidal class of $(2,2,0)$-gain-tight graphs.
A bar-joint framework $(G,p)$ is the combination of a graph $G$ and a map $p$ assigning positions, in some space, to the vertices of $G$. The framework is rigid if every edge-length-preserving continuous motion of the vertices arises from an isometry of the space. We will analyse rigidity when the space is a (non-Euclidean) normed plane and two designated vertices are mapped to the same position. This non-genericity assumption leads us to a count matroid first introduced by Jackson, Kaszanitsky and the third author. We show that independence in this matroid is equivalent to independence as a s…
We present a rigorous study of framework rigidity in general finite dimensional normed spaces from the perspective of Lie group actions on smooth manifolds. As an application, we prove an extension of Asimow and Roth's 1978/9 result establishing the equivalence of local, continuous and infinitesimal rigidity for regular bar-and-joint frameworks in a d-dimensional Euclidean space. Further, we obtain upper bounds for the dimension of the space of trivial motions for a framework and establish the flexibility of small frameworks in general non-Euclidean normed spaces.
The rigidity matrix is a fundamental tool for studying the infinitesimal rigidity properties of Euclidean bar-joint frameworks. In this paper we generalize this tool and introduce a rigidity matrix for bar-joint frameworks in arbitrary finite dimensional real normed vector spaces. Using this new matrix, we derive necessary Maxwell-Laman-type counting conditions for a well-positioned bar-joint framework in a real normed vector space to be infinitesimally rigid. Moreover, we derive symmetry-extended counting conditions for a bar-joint framework with a non-trivial symmetry group to be isostatic (…
Our main result gives an improved bound on the filling areas of closed curves in Banach spaces which are not closed geodesics. As applications we show rigidity of Pu's classical systolic inequality and investigate the isoperimetric constants of normed spaces. The latter has further applications concerning the regularity of minimal surfaces in Finsler manifolds.
A bar-joint framework $(G,p)$ in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^d$ is globally rigid if it is the unique realisation, up to rigid congruences, of $G$ in $\mathbb{E}^d$ with the edge lengths of $(G,p)$. Building on key results of Hendrickson and Connelly, Jackson and Jordán gave a complete combinatorial characterisation of when a generic framework is global rigidity in $\mathbb{E}^2$. We prove an analogous result when the Euclidean norm is replaced by any norm that is analytic on $\mathbb{R}^2 \setminus \{0\}$. More precisely, we show that a graph $G=(V,E)$ is globally rigid in a non-Euclidean…
We use a new coloured multi-graph constructive method to prove that every 2-tree decomposition can be realised in the plane as a bar-joint framework which is minimally rigid (isostatic) with respect to $\ell^1$ or $\ell^\infty$ distance constraints. We show how to adapt this technique to incorporate symmetry and indicate several related open problems on rigidity, redundant rigidity and forced symmetric rigidity in normed spaces.
In this paper, we give a complete self-contained proof that the rigidity matrix of a symmetric bar and joint framework (as well as its transpose) can be transformed into a block-diagonalized form using techniques from group representation theory. This theorem is basic to a number of useful and interesting results concerning the rigidity and flexibility of symmetric frameworks. As an example, we use this theorem to prove a generalization of the Fowler-Guest symmetry extension of Maxwell's rule which can be applied to both injective and non-injective realizations in all dimensions.
We investigate the 2-center problem for arbitrary strictly convex, centrally symmetric curves instead of usual circles. In other words, we extend the 2-center problem (from the Euclidean plane) to strictly convex normed planes, since any strictly convex, centrally symmetric curve can be interpreted as (unit) circle of such a normed plane. Thus we generalize the respective algorithmical approach given by J. Hershberger for the Euclidean plane. We show that the corresponding decision problem can be solved in $O(n^2\log\, n)$ time. In addition, we prove various theorems on the notions of ball hul…
The main results here are two Helly type theorems for the sum of (at most) unit vectors in a normed plane. Also, we give a new characterization of centrally symmetric convex sets in the plane.
We propose new symmetry-adapted rigidity matrices to analyze the infinitesimal rigidity of arbitrary-dimensional bar-joint frameworks with Abelian point group symmetries. These matrices define new symmetry-adapted rigidity matroids on group-labeled quotient graphs. Using these new tools, we establish combinatorial characterizations of infinitesimally rigid two-dimensional bar-joint frameworks whose joints are positioned as generic as possible subject to the symmetry constraints imposed by a reflection, a half-turn or a three-fold rotation in the plane. For bar-joint frameworks which are generi…
We study rotational surfaces with constant Minkowski Gaussian curvature and rotational surfaces with constant Minkowski mean curvature in a $3$-dimensional normed space with rotationally symmetric norm. We have a generalization of the catenoid, pseudo-sphere and Delaunay surfaces.
A number of recent papers have studied when symmetry causes frameworks on a graph to become infinitesimally flexible, or stressed, and when it has no impact. A number of other recent papers have studied special classes of frameworks on generically rigid graphs which are finite mechanisms. Here we introduce a new tool, the orbit matrix, which connects these two areas and provides a matrix representation for fully symmetric infinitesimal flexes, and fully symmetric stresses of symmetric frameworks. The orbit matrix is a true analog of the standard rigidity matrix for general frameworks, and its …
We prove that a region in a two-dimensional affine subspace of a normed space $V$ has the least 2-dimensional Hausdorff measure among all compact surfaces with the same boundary. Furthermore, the 2-dimensional Hausdorff area density admits a convex extension to $Λ^2 V$. The proof is based on a (probably) new inequality for the Euclidean area of a convex centrally-symmetric polygon.
A translation body of a convex body is the convex hull of two of its translates intersecting each other. In the 1950s, Rogers and Shephard found the extremal values, over the family of $n$-dimensional convex bodies, of the maximal volume of the translation bodies of a given convex body. In our paper, we introduce a normed version of this problem, and for the planar case, determine the corresponding quantities, with one exception, for the four types of volumes regularly used in the literature: Busemann, Holmes-Thompson, and Gromov's mass and mass*. We examine the problem also for higher dimensi…
We apply the technique of Károly Bezdek and Daniel Bezdek to study billiard trajectories in convex bodies, when the length is measured with a (possibly asymmetric) norm. We prove a lower bound for the length of the shortest closed billiard trajectory, related to the non-symmetric Mahler problem. With this technique we are able to give short and elementary proofs to some known results.
An equilateral dimension of a normed space is a maximal number of pairwise equidistant points of this space. The aim of this paper is to study the equilateral dimension of certain classes of finite dimensional normed spaces. The well-known conjecture states that the equilateral dimension of any $n$-dimensional normed space is not less than $n+1$. By using an elementary continuity argument, we establish it in the following classes of spaces: permutation-invariant spaces, Orlicz-Musielak spaces and in one codimensional subspaces of $\ell^n_{\infty}$. For smooth and symmetric spaces, Orlicz-Musie…
We do further investigation in a certain cosine function defined for smooth Minkowski spaces. We prove that such function is symmetric if and only if the referred space is Euclidean, and also that it can be given in terms of the Gateaux derivative of the norm. As an application we use it to study the ratio between the lengths of tangent segments drawn through an external point to the unit circle of a Radon plane. We also give an easy characterization of such planes in terms of signs of the cosine function.
We discuss the concept of the shadow boundary of a centrally symmetric convex ball $K$ (actually being the unit ball of a Minkowski normed space) with respect to a direction ${\bf x}$ of the Euclidean n-space $R^n$. We introduce the concept of general parameter spheres of $K$ corresponding to this direction and prove that the shadow boundary is a topological manifold if all of the non-degenerated general parameter spheres are, too. In this case, using the approximation theorem of cell-like maps we get that they are homeomorphic to the $(n-2)$-dimensional sphere $S^{(n-2)}$. We also prove that …
A rigidity theory is developed for bar-joint frameworks in linear matrix spaces endowed with a unitarily invariant norm. Analogues of Maxwell's counting criteria are obtained and minimally rigid matrix frameworks are shown to belong to the matroidal class of (k,l)-sparse graphs for suitable k and l. A characterisation of infinitesimal rigidity is obtained for product norms and it is shown that K_6 - e (respectively, K_7) is the smallest minimally rigid graph for the class of 2 x 2 symmetric (respectively, hermitian) matrices with the trace norm.
When a discrete group admits a convex-cocompact action on a non-compact rank-one symmetric space, there is a natural lower bound for the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set, given by the Ahlfors regular conformal dimension of the boundary of the group. We show that equality is achieved precisely when the group stabilizes an isometric copy of some non-compact rank-one symmetric space on which it acts with compact quotient. This generalizes a theorem of Bonk-Kleiner, who proved it in the case of real hyperbolic space. To prove our main theorem, we study tangents of Lipschitz differentiability s…
Definition. A symmetric with respect to 0 bounded closed convex set A in a finite dimensional normed space X is called a sufficient enlargement for X (or of B(X)) if for arbitrary isometric embedding of X into a Banach space Y there exists a projection P:Y\to X such that P(B(Y)) is a subset of A (by B(X) we denote the unit ball). The notion of sufficient enlargement is implicit in the paper: B.Grunbaum, Projection constants, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 95 (1960) 451--465. It was explicilty introduced by the author in: M.I.Ostrovskii, Generalization of projection constants: sufficient enlargements,…
We study quasi-isometric embeddings of symmetric spaces and non-uniform irreducible lattices in semisimple higher rank Lie groups. We show that any quasi-isometric embedding between symmetric spaces of the same rank can be decomposed into a product of quasi-isometric embeddings into irreducible symmetric spaces. We thus extend earlier rigidity results about quasi-isometric embeddings to the setting of semisimple Lie groups. We also present some examples when the rigidity does not hold, including first examples in which every flat is mapped into multiple flats.
If a group $Γ$ acts geometrically on a CAT(0) space $X$ without 3-flats, then either $X$ contains a $Γ$-periodic geodesic which does not bound a flat half-plane, or else $X$ is a rank 2 Riemannian symmetric space, a 2-dimensional Euclidean building or non-trivially splits as a metric product. Consequently all such groups satisfy a strong form of the Tits Alternative.

We show that every symmetric normed space admits an efficient nearest neighbor search data structure with doubly-logarithmic approximation. Specifically, for every $n$, $d = n^{o(1)}$, and every $d$-dimensional symmetric norm $\|\cdot\|$, there exists a data structure for $\mathrm{poly}(\log \log n)$-approximate nearest neighbor search over $\|\cdot\|$ for $n$-point datasets achieving $n^{o(1)}$ query time and $n^{1+o(1)}$ space. The main technical ingredient of the algorithm is a low-distortion embedding of a symmetric norm into a low-dimensional iterated product of top-$k$ norms. We also sho…
