Dynamical structure factor (S(k,$ω$)) is calculated for the one-dimensional (1D) transverse field Ising model, and its recent extension to include a three spin term, with quenched binary disorder. We study the low energy modes for lattices as large as 256 sites. We show that the intense zero energy modes appear whenever the binary disorder straddles two different winding numbers. We argue that these are Majorana modes, which reside on the boundaries of the rare regions. The size distribution of Majorana pairs has a fractal behavior at the critical points. With the longer ranged interactions a spin glass transition is observed as well.
We numerically explore $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetric random interacting Ising-Majorana chains at high energy. A very rich phase diagram emerges with two topologically distinct many-body localization (MBL) regimes separated by a much broader thermal phase than previously found. This is a striking consequence of the avalanche theory. We further find MBL spin-glass order always associated to a many-body spectral pairing, presumably signaling a strong zero mode operator which opens fascinating perspectives for MBL-protected topological qubits.
In this paper we study the phase diagram of two Ising planes coupled by a standard spin-spin interaction with bond randomness in each plane. The whole phase diagram is analyzed by help of Monte Carlo simulations and field theory arguments.
We consider the $\pm J$ Ising model on a cubic lattice with a gauge-invariant disorder distribution. Disorder depends on a parameter $β_G$ that plays the role of a chemical potential for the amount of frustration. We study the model at a specific value of the disorder parameter $β_G$, where frustration shows long-range correlations. We characterize the universality class, obtaining accurate estimates of the critical exponents: $ν= 0.655(15)$ and $η_q = 1.05(5)$, where $η_q$ is the overlap susceptibility exponent.
Motivated by the compound ${\rm LiHo}_x{\rm Y}_{1-x}{\rm F}_4$, we consider the Ising chain with random couplings and in the presence of simultaneous random transverse and longitudinal fields, and study its low-energy properties at zero temperature by the strong disorder renormalization group approach. In the absence of longitudinal fields, the system exhibits a quantum-ordered and a quantum-disordered phase separated by a critical point of infinite disorder. When the longitudinal random field is switched on, the ordered phase vanishes and the trajectories of the renormalization group are attr…
We study the dynamic and metastable properties of the fully connected Ising $p$-spin model with finite number of variables. We define trapping energies, trapping times and self correlation functions and we analyse their statistical properties in comparison to the predictions of trap models.
We consider the two-dimensional randomly site diluted Ising model and the random-bond +-J Ising model (also called Edwards-Anderson model), and study their critical behavior at the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition. The critical behavior of thermodynamic quantities can be derived from a set of renormalization-group equations, in which disorder is a marginally irrelevant perturbation at the two-dimensional Ising fixed point. We discuss their solutions, focusing in particular on the universality of the logarithmic corrections arising from the presence of disorder. Then, we present a finite-s…
We study a one-dimensional chain of corner-sharing triangles with antiferromagnetic Ising interactions along its bonds. Classically, this system is highly frustrated with an extensive entropy at T = 0 and exponentially decaying spin correlations. We show that the introduction of a quantum dynmamics via a transverse magnetic field removes the entropy and opens a gap, but leaves the ground state disordered at all values of the transverse field, thereby providing an analog of the "disorder by disorder" scenario first proposed by Anderson and Fazekas in their search for resonating valence bond sta…
We investigate the explicit renormalization group for fermionic field theoretic representation of two-dimensional random bond Ising model with long-range correlated disorder. We show that a new fixed point appears by introducing a long-range correlated disorder. Such as the one has been observed in previous works for the bosonic ($ϕ^4$) description. We have calculated the correlation length exponent and the anomalous scaling dimension of fermionic fields at this fixed point. Our results are in agreement with the extended Harris criterion derived by Weinrib and Halperin.
Using a formalism based on the spectral decomposition of the replicated transfer matrix for disordered Ising models, we obtain several results that apply both to isolated one-dimensional systems and to locally tree-like graph and factor graph (p-spin) ensembles. We present exact analytical expressions, which can be efficiently approximated numerically, for many types of correlation functions and for the average free energies of open and closed finite chains. All the results achieved, with the exception of those involving closed chains, are then rigorously derived without replicas, using a prob…
We consider the Ising model on the square lattice with biaxially correlated random ferromagnetic couplings, the critical point of which is fixed by self-duality. The disorder represents a relevant perturbation according to the extended Harris criterion. Critical properties of the system are studied by large scale Monte Carlo simulations. The correlation length critical exponent, ν=2.005(5), corresponds to that expected in a system with isotropic correlated long-range disorder, whereas the scaling dimension of the magnetization density, x_m=0.1294(7), is somewhat larger than in the pure system.…
We use large-scale Monte Carlo simulations to test the Weinrib-Halperin criterion that predicts new universality classes in the presence of sufficiently slowly decaying power-law-correlated quenched disorder. While new universality classes are reasonably well established, the predicted exponents are controversial. We propose a method of growing such correlated disorder using the three-dimensional Ising model as benchmark systems both for generating disorder and studying the resulting phase transition. Critical equilibrium configurations of a disorder-free system are used to define the two-valu…
When the two-dimensional random-bond Ising model is represented as a noninteracting fermion problem, it has the same symmetries as an ensemble of random matrices known as class D. A nonlinear sigma model analysis of the latter in two dimensions has previously led to the prediction of a metallic phase, in which the fermion eigenstates at zero energy are extended. In this paper we argue that such behavior cannot occur in the random-bond Ising model, by showing that the Ising spin correlations in the metallic phase violate the bound on such correlations that results from the reality of the Ising …
We study critical behavior of the diluted 2D Ising model in the presence of disorder correlations which decay algebraically with distance as $\sim r^{-a}$. Mapping the problem onto 2D Dirac fermions with correlated disorder we calculate the critical properties using renormalization group up to two-loop order. We show that beside the Gaussian fixed point the flow equations have a non trivial fixed point which is stable for $0.995<a<2$ and is characterized by the correlation length exponent $ν= 2/a + O((2-a)^3)$. Using bosonization, we also calculate the averaged square of the spin-spin correlat…
We study the dynamics of macroscopic observables such as the magnetization and the energy per degree of freedom in Ising spin models on random graphs of finite connectivity, with random bonds and/or heterogeneous degree distributions. To do so we generalize existing implementations of dynamical replica theory and cavity field techniques to systems with strongly disordered and locally tree-like interactions. We illustrate our results via application to the dynamics of e.g. $\pm J$ spin-glasses on random graphs and of the overlap in finite connectivity Sourlas codes. All results are tested again…
For the Many-Body-Localized phase of random Majorana models, a general Strong Disorder Real-Space Renormalization procedure known as RSRG-X [D. Pekker, G. Refael, E. Altman, E. Demler and V. Oganesyan, Phys. Rev. X 4, 011052 (2014)] is described to produce the whole set of excited states, via the iterative construction of the Local Integrals of Motion (LIOMs). The RG rules are then explicitly derived for arbitrary quadratic Hamiltonians (free-fermions models) and for the Kitaev chain with local interactions involving even numbers of consecutive Majorana fermions. The emphasis is put on the adv…
Two dimensional topological superconductors (TS) host chiral Majorana modes (MMs) localized at the boundaries. In this work, within quasiclassical approximation we study the effect of disorder on the localization length of MMs in two dimensional spin-orbit (SO) coupled superconductors. We find nonmonotonic behavior of the Majorana localization length as a function of disorder strength. At weak disorder, the Majorana localization length decreases with an increasing disorder strength. Decreasing the disorder scattering time below a critical value $τ_c$, the Majorana localization length starts to…
We demonstrate that a thermal metal of Majorana fermions forms in a two-dimensional system of interacting non-Abelian (Ising) anyons in the presence of moderate disorder. This bulk metallic phase arises in the $ν=5/2$ quantum Hall state when disorder pins the anyonic quasiparticles. More generally, it naturally occurs for various proposed systems supporting Majorana fermion zero modes when disorder induces the random pinning of a finite density of vortices. This includes all two-dimensional topological superconductors in so-called symmetry class D. A distinct experimental signature of the ther…
We study the effects of small temperature as well as disorder perturbations on the equilibrium state of three-dimensional Ising spin glasses via an alternate scaling ansatz. By using Monte Carlo simulations, we show that temperature and disorder perturbations yield chaotic changes in the equilibrium state and that temperature chaos is considerably harder to observe than disorder chaos.
Here is the first part of the summary of my work on random Ising model using real-space renormalization group (RSRG), also known as a Migdal-Kadanoff one. This approximate renormalization scheme was applied to the analysis thermodynamic properties of the model, and of probabilistic properties of a pair correlator, which is a fluctuating object in disordered systems. We elucidate the reduction of the winding number (WN) caused by the onsite disorder in a higher WN next nearest neighbor XY model. When disorder becomes strong enough, Majorana edge modes become critically extended, beyond which they collapse into Anderson localized (AL) states in the bulk, resulting in a topological Anderson insulating state (TAI). We identify a resilience threshold $W_t$ for every pair of Majorana fermions (MFs). In response to increasing disorder every pair of MFs collapse into AL bulk at their resilience threshold. For very strong disorder, all Majorana fermions collapse a…
We study two different versions of the site-diluted Ising model in three dimensions with long-range spatially correlated disorder by Monte Carlo means. We use finite-size scaling techniques to compute the critical exponents of these systems, taking into account the strong scaling-corrections. We find a $ν$ value that is compatible with the analytical predictions.
We investigate the effect of correlated disorder on Majorana zero modes (MZMs) bound to magnetic vortices in two-dimensional topological superconductors. By starting from a lattice model of interacting fermions with a $p_x \pm i p_y$ superconducting ground state in the disorder-free limit, we use perturbation theory to describe the enhancement of the Majorana localization length at weak disorder and a self-consistent numerical solution to understand the breakdown of the MZMs at strong disorder. We find that correlated disorder has a much stronger effect on the MZMs than uncorrelated disorder a…
We study the low-energy physics of a chain of Majorana fermions in the presence of interaction and disorder, emphasizing the difference between Majoranas and conventional (complex) fermions. While in the non-interacting limit both models are equivalent (in particular, belong to the same symmetry class BDI and flow towards the same infinite-randomness critical fixed point), their behavior differs drastically once interaction is added. Our density-matrix renormalization group calculations show that the complex-fermion chain remains at the non-interacting fixed point. On the other hand, the Major…
The prospects for realizing a topological quantum computer have brightened since the apparent detection of Majorana fermions at the ends of semiconducting nanowires. These Majorana zero-modes persist in the presence of the strong disorder that may be present in such systems, protected by the mobility gap of localized systems. Recent proposals to manipulate quantum information in a Majorana chain involve adiabatically adjusting gate voltages in one-dimensional nanowire networks. However, as we show, in the adiabatic limit, a disordered system with multiple zero-mode Majorana fermions will under…
We derive the analytical expression for the first finite size correction to the average free energy of disordered Ising models on random regular graphs. The formula can be physically interpreted as a weighted sum over all non self-intersecting loops in the graph, the weight being the free-energy shift due to the addition of the loop to an infinite tree.
We present results from extensive Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of domain growth in ferromagnets and binary mixtures with quenched disorder. These are modeled by the "random-bond Ising model" and the "dilute Ising model" with either nonconserved (Glauber) spin-flip kinetics or conserved (Kawasaki) spin-exchange kinetics. In all cases, our MC results are consistent with power-law growth with an exponent $θ(T,ε)$ which depends on the quench temperature $T$ and the disorder amplitude $ε$. Such exponents arise naturally when the coarsening domains are trapped by energy barriers which grow logarithm…
We identify simple mechanisms that prevents the onset of disorder chaos for the Ising spin glass model on $\mathbb Z^d$. This was first shown by Chatterjee in the case of Gaussian couplings. We present three proofs of the theorem for general couplings with continuous distribution based on the presence in the coupling realization of stabilizing features of positive density.
We study the stochastic parallel dynamics of Ising spin systems defined on finitely connected directed random graphs with arbitrary degree distributions, using generating functional analysis. For fully asymmetric graphs the dynamics of the system can be completely solved, due to the asymptotic absence of loops. For arbitrary graph symmetry, we solve the dynamics exactly for the first few time steps, and we construct approximate stationary solutions.
We study a disordered superconducting nanowire, with broken time-reversal and spin-rotational symmetry, which can be driven into a topological phase with end Majorana bound states by an externally applied magnetic field. As a function of disorder strength, it is known that the Majorana nanowire has a delocalization quantum phase transition from a topologically nontrivial phase, which supports Majorana bound states, to a nontopological insulating phase without them. On both sides of the transition, the system is localized at zero energy albeit with very different topological properties. We expl…
Ground states and domain walls are investigated with exact combinatorial optimization in two-dimensional random field Ising magnets. The ground states break into domains above a length scale that depends exponentially on the random field strength squared. For weak disorder, this paramagnetic structure has remnant long-range order of the percolation type. The domain walls are super-rough in ordered systems with a roughness exponent $ζ$ close to 6/5. The interfaces exhibit rare fluctuations and multiscaling reminiscent of some models of kinetic roughening and hydrodynamic turbulence.
We study the decay and oscillations of Majorana fermion wavefunctions and ground state (GS) fermion parity in one-dimensional topological superconducting lattice systems. Using a Majorana transfer matrix method, we find that Majorana wavefunction properties are encoded in the associated Lyapunov exponent, which in turn is the sum of two independent components: a `superconducting component' which characterizes the gap induced decay, and the `normal component', which determines the oscillations and response to chemical potential configurations. The topological phase transition separating phases …

We study the dynamics of bond-disordered Ising spin systems on random graphs with finite connectivity, using generating functional analysis. Rather than disorder-averaged correlation and response functions (as for fully connected systems), the dynamic order parameter is here a measure which represents the disorder averaged single-spin path probabilities, given external perturbation field paths. In the limit of completely asymmetric graphs our macroscopic laws close already in terms of the single-spin path probabilities at zero external field. For the general case of arbitrary graph symmetry we…
The phase-ordering kinetics of the ferromagnetic two-dimensional Ising model with uniform disorder is investigated by intensive Monte Carlo simulations. Taking into account finite-time corrections to scaling, simple ageing behaviour is observed in the two-time responses and correlators. The dynamical exponent z and the form of the scaling functions only depend on the ratio eps/T, where eps describes the width of the distribution of the disorder. The agreement of the predictions of local scale-invariance generalised to z<> 2 for the two-time scaling functions of response and correlations with t…
We study the transport through the Kitaev's chain with incommensurate potentials coupled to two normal leads by the numerical operator method. We find a quantized linear conductance of $e^2/h$, which is independent to the disorder strength and the gate voltage in a wide range, signaling the Majorana bound states. While the incommensurate disorder suppresses the current at finite voltage bias, and then narrows the linear response regime of the $I-V$ curve which exhibits two plateaus corresponding to the superconducting gap and the band edge respectively. The linear conductance abruptly drops to…
The gapless Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) quasiparticles of a clean three dimensional spinless $p_x+ip_y$ superconductor provide an intriguing example of a thermal Hall semimetal (ThSM) phase of Majorana-Weyl fermions in class D of the Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classification; such a phase can support a large anomalous thermal Hall conductivity and protected surface Majorana-Fermi arcs at zero energy. We study the effect of quenched disorder on such a topological phase with both numerical and analytical methods. Using the kernel polynomial method, we compute the average and typical density of st…

Majorana bound states are zero-energy modes localized at the ends of a one-dimensional (1D) topological superconductor. Introducing disorder usually increases the Majorana localization length, until eventually inducing a topological phase transition to a trivial phase. In this work we show that in some cases weak disorder causes the Majorana localization length to decrease, making the topological phase more robust. Increasing the disorder further eventually leads to a change of trend and to a phase transition to a trivial phase. Interestingly the transition occurs at $ξ_0\gg l$, where $l$ is t…
We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics in the quantum Ising model with power-law interactions and positional disorder. For arbitrary dimension $d$ and interaction range $α\geq d$ we analytically find a stretched exponential decay of the global magnetization and ensemble-averaged single-spin purity with a stretch-power $β= d/α$ in the thermodynamic limit. Numerically, we confirm that glassy behavior persists for finite system sizes and sufficiently strong disorder. We identify dephasing between disordered coherent pairs as the main mechanism leading to a relaxation of global magnetization, wh…
