We investigate the influence of Landau quantization on the superconducting instability for a pure layered superconductor in the magnetic field directed perpendicular to the layers. We demonstrate that the quantization corrections to the Cooper-pairing kernel with finite Zeeman spin splitting promote the formation of the nonuniform state in which the order parameter is periodically modulated along the magnetic field, i.e., between the layers (Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov [FFLO] state). The conventional uniform state experiences such a quantization-induced FFLO instability at low temperatures even in a common case of predominantly orbital suppression of superconductivity when the Zeeman spin splitting is expected to have a relatively weak effect. The maximum relative FFLO temperature is given by the ratio of the superconducting transition temperature and the Fermi energy. This maximum is realized when the ratio of the spin-spitting energy and the Landau-level separation is half-integer. These results imply that the FFLO states may exist not only in the Pauli-limited superconductors but also in very clean materials with small Zeeman spin-splitting energy. We expect that the described quantization-promoted FFLO instability is a general phenomenon, which may be found in materials with different electronic spectra and order-parameter symmetries.
There are strong experimental evidences of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state formation in layered organic superconductors in parallel magnetic field. We study theoretically the interplay between the orbital effect and the FFLO modulation in this case and demonstrate that the in-plane critical field anisotropy drastically changes at the transition to the FFLO state. The very peculiar angular dependence of the superconducting onset temperature which is predicted may serve for unambiguous identification of the FFLO modulation. The obtained results permit us to suggest the modulate…
We demonstrate that in a wide class of multilayered superconductor - ferromagnet structures (e.g., S/F, S/F/N and S/F/F') the vanishing Meissner effect signals the appearance of the in-plane Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) modulated superconducting phase. In contrast to the bulk superconductors the FFLO instability in these systems can emerge at temperatures close to the critical one and is effectively controlled by the S layer thickness and the angle between magnetization vectors in the F/F' bilayers. The predicted FFLO state reveals through the critical temperature oscillations vs th…
A novel route to a one-dimensional Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (1D-FFLO) state in the absence of broken time-reversal symmetry is proposed in this paper. At present such a state may be encouraged in a clean AlAs quantum wire. Using the AlAs quantum wire as an example it is shown using bosonization and the renormalization group approach that the 1D-FFLO state can arise due to a combination of Coulomb interactions and the unique bandstructure arrangement of the AlAs quantum wire. The present theoretical proposal is very general and is applicable to other systems with similar fermionic inter…
We show that a wide class of layered superconductor-ferromagnet (S/F) hybrids demonstrate the emergence of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase well below the superconducting transition temperature. Decreasing the temperature one can switch the system from uniform to the FFLO state which is accompanied by the damping of the diamagnetic Meissner response down to zero and also by the sign change in the curvature of the current-velocity dependence. Our estimates show that an additional layer of the normal metal (N) covering the ferromagnet substantially soften the conditions required…
The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state can be found in layered d-wave superconductors such as high $T_c$ cuprates and $κ$-(ET)$_2$ salts in a planar magnetic field. We show the superconducting order parameter forms two dimensional crystalline lattice in the FFLO state for d-wave superconductors. Also the quasiparticle density of states and the thermodynamics of FFLO state are constructed. Therefore STM or NMR will provide a definitive test for the existence of the FFLO state.
We compare the theoretical anisotropic upper critical field $H_{C}(Θ,T)$ of a quasi-two-dimensional d-wave superconductor with recent $H_{c2}$ data for the layered organic superconductor $κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2Cu(NCS)_2$. We find agreement both with regard to the angular and the temperature dependence of $H_{C}$. This supports the suggestion that the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state (FFLO state) exists in this material for exactly plane-parallel orientation of the magnetic field. Indications of precursor states, occurring for small deviations from the plane-parallel field direction, are also poi…
The heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 is the first material, where different experimental probes show strong evidence pointing to the realization of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. The inhomogeneous superconducting FFLO state with a periodically modulated order parameter was predicted to appear in Pauli-limited, sufficiently clean type-II superconductors already more than 40 years ago. On the other hand, CeCoIn5 is supposed to be close to a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) showing strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations (SF) at atmospheric pressure. We studi…
We study the phase diagram of spatially inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov(FFLO) superconducting state using the Ginzburg-Landau(GL) free energy, derived from the microscopic Hamiltonian of the system, and notice that it has a very clear Lifshitz tricritical point. We find the specific heat jumps abruptly near the first-order line in the emergent phase diagram which is very similar to the recent experimental observation in layered organic superconductor. Comparison with experimental data allows us to obtain quantitative relations between the parameters of phenomenological free ener…
The 1964 reports of Fulde, Ferrell, Larkin, and Ovchinnikov (FFLO or LOFF) on paramagnetic enhancement of superconductivity suggested that superconductivity can persist at applied magnetic fields above both its orbital and paramagnetic limits. By forming spatially alternating superconducting and paramagnetic regions, the increase in local magnetic field in the paramagnetic region allows a reduction in field inside the superconductor. We present an FFLO phase diagram model for layered organic superconductors and confirm it with high magnetic field data from four materials. Our work suggests tha…
Paramagnetic pair breaking is believed to be of increasing importance in many layered superconducting materials such as cuprates and organic compounds. Recently, strong evidence for a phase transition to the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov(FFLO) state has been obtained for the first time. We present a new theory of competing spin and orbital pair breaking in clean superconducting films or layers. As a general result, we find that the influence of orbital pair breaking on the paramagnetically limited phase boundary is rather strong, and its neglect seldom justified. This is particularly true f…
In quasi low dimensional superconductors under {\it parallel} magnetic fields applied along a conducting direction, vortex lattices with a modulation of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type {\it perpendicular} to the field may occur due to an enhanced paramagnetic depairing. As the strength of an in-plane field is varied in a Q2D material, the Josephson vortex lattices accompanied by nodal planes are formed in higher Landau level (LL) modes of the superconducting (SC) order parameter and show field-induced structural transitions. A change of orientation of nodal planes induced by these…
A magnetic field is generally considered to be incompatible with superconductivity as it tends to spin-polarize electrons and breaks apart the opposite-spin singlet superconducting Cooper pairs. Here, an experimental phenomenon is observed that an intriguing reemergent superconductivity evolves from a conventional superconductivity undergoing a hump-like intermediate phase with a finite electric resistance in the van der Waals heterointerface of layered NbSe2 and CrCl3 flakes. This phenomenon merely occurred when the applied magnetic field is parallel to the sample plane and perpendicular to t…
We calculate the Pauli-limited upper critical field and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) instability for {\it dirty} d-wave superconductors within the quasiclassical theory using the self-consistent $\hat{t}$-matrix approximation for impurities. We find that the phase diagram depends sensitively on the scattering rate and phase shift of nonmagnetic impurities. The transition into the superconducting state is always second order for weak (Born) scattering, while in the unitarity (strong) scattering limit a first-order transition into both uniform and spatially modulated superconducti…
We explore superconducting instability for a clean two-band layered superconductor with deep and shallow bands in the magnetic field applied perpendicular to the layers. In the shallow band, the quasiclassical approximation is not applicable, and Landau quantization has to be accounted for exactly. The electronic spectrum of this band in the magnetic field is composed of the one-dimensional Landau-level minibands. With increasing magnetic field the system experiences series of Lifshitz transitions when the chemical potential enters and exits the minibands. These transitions profoundly influenc…
The effect of impurities on Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states in a layered superconductor with d-wave pairing symmetry is investigated using the tight-binding model and the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. At low temperature and a strong exchange field applied parallel to its conducting plane, a two-dimensional (2D) square lattice-like Larkin-Ovchinnikov state is more energetically favorable in a clean system. In the presence of impurities, the spatial profile of the order parameter remains as a 2D square lattice, and it is distorted only near the impurities when the impurity conce…
Clean superconductors with weakly coupled conducting planes have been suggested as promising candidates for observing the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. We consider here a layered superconductor in a magnetic field of arbitrary orientation with respect to the conducting plane. In this case there is competition of spin-pair-breaking and orbital-pair-breaking effects. In previous work, phase boundaries characterized by Landau quantum numbers n > 0 have been predicted. Here, we calculate the actual structure of the stable states below Hc2 by minimizing the free energy. We find sev…
We present a microscopic calculation of the energy dissipation in the core of a vortex moving in a two-dimensional or layered superconductor in the moderately clean regime. In this regime, the quasiclassical Bardeen--Stephen result remains valid in spite of the strong correlations between the energy levels. We find that the quasiclassical expression applies both in the limit of fast vortex motion (with transitions between smeared levels) and in the limit of slow vortex motion (with nearly adiabatic dynamics). This finding can be related to the similar result known for the unitary random-matrix…
We present upper critical field data for $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ with the magnetic field close to parallel and parallel to the conducting layers. We show that we can eliminate the effect of vortex dynamics in these layered materials if the layers are oriented within 0.3 degrees of parallel to the applied magnetic field. Eliminating vortex effects leaves one remaining feature in the data that corresponds to the Pauli paramagnetic limit ($H_p$). We propose a semi-empirical method to calculate the $H_p$ in quasi 2D superconductors. This method takes into account the energy gap of each of th…
We investigate the structure of quasiparticle states localized in a core of an Abrikosov vortex in a clean layered superconductor in the presence of planar defects. It is shown that even a highly transparent defect opens a minigap at the Fermi energy. Its magnitude, $E_g\simΔ\sqrt{R}$, exceeds the mean level spacing for the chiral branch, $ω_0\simΔ^2/E_F$, already for very small values of the reflection coefficient off the defect, $R\ll1$ ($Δ$ is the bulk gap). For $R\gtrsim\sqrt{Δ/E_F}$, formation of the minigap is accompanied by the appearance of subgap states localized along the defect, in …
We study parametric level statistics of the discretized excitation spectra inside a moving vortex core in layered superconductors with impurities. The universal conductivity is evaluated numerically for the various values of rescaled vortex velocities $κ$ from the clean case to the dirty limit case. The random matrix theoretical prediction is verified numerically in the large $κ$ regime. On the contrary in the low velocity regime, we observe $σ_{xx} \propto κ^{2/3}$ which is consistent with the theoretical result for the super-clean case, where the energy dissipation is due to the Landau-Zener…
Theories of proximity effect in layered superconductor-normal metal structures usually deal with a hypothetic normal metal with no interaction between electrons and with finite temperatures often close to the superconductor critical temperature. We present an asymptotic solution of the Gor'kov equations in the opposite low-temperature limit for a clean normal metal with a repulsive interaction between electrons. The order parameter in the metal exhibits a power-law decay, Delta(x) is proportional to 1/x, as a function of the distance from the SN boundary, x, with a proximity length strongly de…
We study induced triplet pairing correlations in clean ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet heterostructures. The pairing state in the superconductor is the conventional singlet s-wave, and the angle $α$ between the magnetizations of the two ferromagnetic layers is arbitrary. We use a numerical fully self-consistent solution of the microscopic equations and obtain the time-dependent triplet correlations via the Heisenberg equations of motion. We find that in addition to the usual singlet correlations, triplet correlations, odd in time as required by the Pauli principle, are induced in both t…
We present magnetic susceptibility and electrical transport measurements of the highly anisotropic compound LaSb$_2$ observing a very broad transition into a clean, consistent with type-I, superconducting state with distinct features of 2 dimensionality. Application of hydrostatic pressure induces a 2- to 3-dimensional crossover evidenced by a reduced anisotropy and transition width. The superconducting transition appears phase fluctuation limited at ambient pressure with fluctuations observed for temperatures greater than 8 times the superconducting critical temperature.
We consider the quasiparticle c-axis conductivity in highly anisotropic layered compounds in the presence of the magnetic field parallel to the layers. We show that at low temperatures the quasiparticle interlayer conductivity depends strongly on the orientation of the in-plane magnetic field if the excitation gap has nodes on the Fermi surface. Thus measurements of the angle-dependent c-axis (out-of-plane) magnetoresistance, as a function of the orientation of the magnetic field in the layers, provide information on the momentum dependence of the superconducting gap (or pseudogap) on the Ferm…
The upper critical field of multiband superconductors is an important quantity that can reveal the details about the nature of the superconducting pairing. Here we experimentally map out the complete upper critical field phase diagram of a stoichiometric superconductor, CaKFe$_4$As$_4$, up to 90T for different orientations of the magnetic field and at temperatures down to 4.2K. The upper critical fields are extremely large, reaching values close to ~3$T_c$ at the lowest temperature, and the anisotropy decreases dramatically with temperature leading to essentially isotropic superconductivity at…
When an in-plane field is applied to a clean interface superconductor, a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-like phase is stabilized. This phase has a $\mathrm{U}(1)\times\mathrm{U}(1)$ symmetry and, in principle, this symmetry allows for flux carrying topological excitations different from Abrikosov vortices (which are the simplest defects associated with $S^1 \to S^1$ maps). However, in practice, largely due to electromagnetic and other intercomponent interactions, such topological excitations are very rare in superconducting systems. Here we demonstrate that a realistic microscopic the…
Using the quasi-classical formalism we provide the description of the temperature and field-direction dependence of the in-plane upper critical field in layered superconductors, taking into account the interlayer Josephson coupling and the paramagnetic spin splitting. We generalize the Lawrence-Doniach model for the case of high magnetic fields and show that the re-entrant superconductivity is naturally described by our formalism when neglecting the Pauli pair breaking effect. We demonstrate that in layered superconductors the in-plane anisotropy of the onset of superconductivity exhibits four…
The behavior of clean layered superconductors in the presence of a finite electric current and in zero-magnetic field behavior is addressed. The structure of the current temperature phase diagram and the properties of each of the four regions will be explained. We will discuss the expected current voltage and resistance characteristics of each region as well as the effects of finite size and weak disorder on the phase diagram. In addition, the reason for which a weakly non-ohmic region exists above the transition temperature will be explained.
Single crystals of the layered organic type II superconductor, $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(NCS)$_{2}$, have been studied in magnetic fields of up to 33 T and at temperatures between 0.5 K and 11 K using a compact differential susceptometer. When the magnetic field lies precisely in the quasi-two-dimensional planes of the material, there is strong evidence for a phase transition from the superconducting mixed state into a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, manisfested as a change in the rigidity of the vortex system. The behaviour of the transition as a function of temperature is in good…
The theoretical statements about a restoration of a superconductivity at magnetic fields higher than the quasiclassical upper critical field and a reentrance of superconductivity at temperatures $T_c(H)\approx T_c(0)$ in the superconductors with open Fermi surfaces are reinvestigated taking into account a scattering of quasiparticles on the impurities. The system of integral equations for determination of the upper critical field parallel to the conducting planes in a layered conventional and unconventional superconductors with impurities are derived. The $H_{c2}(T)$ values for the "clean" cas…
We use the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity to calculate the response of the currents in the core of a vortex to an alternating electric field. We consider relatively clean superconductors with a mean free path larger than the coherence length (but still not in the 'superclean limit'). The current response of the core is dominated by the bound states of Caroli, de Gennes and Matricon, and differs significantly from the response obtained from the model of a ``normal core'' introduced by Bardeen and Stephen. The model of Bardeen and Stephen describes the limit of a dirty core and fails…
The uniformly frustrated layered XY model is analyzed in its Villain form. A decouple pancake vortex liquid phase is identified. It is bounded by both first-order and second-order decoupling lines in the magnetic field versus temperature plane. These transitions, respectively, can account for the flux-lattice melting and for the flux-lattice depinning observed in the mixed phase of clean high-temperature superconductors.
In an accompanying paper [arXiv:0903.0011v1] we have studied the equilibrium properties of vortices in a chiral quasi-twodimensional triplet superfluid/superconductor. Here we extend our studies to include the dynamical response of a vortex core in a chiral triplet superconductor to an external a.c. electromagnetic field. We consider in particular the response of a doubly quantized vortex with a homogeneous core in the time-reversed phase. The external frequencies are assumed to be comparable in magnitude to the superconducting gap frequency, such that the vortex motion is non-stationary but c…
We study the thermodynamics of clean structures composed of superconductor (S) and ferromagnet (F) layers and consisting of one or more SFS junctions. We use fully self consistent numerical methods to compute the condensation free energies of the possible order parameter configurations as a function of temperature $T$. As $T$ varies, we find that there are phase transitions between states characterized by different junction configurations (denoted as ``0'' or ``$π$'' according to the phase difference of the order parameter in consecutive S layers). We show that these transitions are of first o…
We have numerically investigated the dynamics of vortices in a clean layered superconductor placed in a perpendicular magnetic field. We describe the energetics using a Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional in the lowest Landau level approximation. The dynamics are determined using the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau approximation, and thermal fluctuations are incorporated via a Langevin term. The c-axis conductivity at nonzero frequencies, as calculated from the Kubo formalism, shows a strong but not divergent increase as the melting temperature $T_M$ is approached from above, followed by an …
Measurements of the temperature and angular dependencies of the upper critical fields $H_{c2}$ of a stoichiometric single crystal LiFeAs in pulsed magnetic fields up to 50 T were performed using a tunnel diode resonator. Full $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(T)$ and $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(T)$ curves with $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(0)=17 \pm 1$ T, $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(0)=26 \pm 1$ T, and the anisotropy parameter ${γ_H}(T) \equiv H_{c2}^{\bot c}/H_{c2}^{\parallel c}$ decreasing from $\approx 2.5$ at $T_c$ to 1.5 at $T\ll T_c$ were observed. The results for both orientations are in excellent agreement with a theory of $H_…
We investigate the equilibrium and nonequilibrium properties of the core region of vortices in layered superconductors. We discuss the electronic structure of singly and doubly quantized vortices for both s-wave and d-wave pairing symmetry. We consider the intermediate clean regime, where the vortex-core bound states are broadened into resonances with a width comparable to or larger than the quantized energy level spacing, and calculate the response of a vortex core to an {\em a.c.} electromagnetic field for vortices that are pinned to a metallic defect. We concentrate on the case where the vo…
The nature of decoupling in the mixed phase of extremely type-II layered superconductors is studied theoretically through a duality transformation of the layered XY model with frustration. In the limit of weak coupling, we generally find that the Josephson effect is absent if and only if the phase correlations within isolated layers are short range. In the case specific to uniform frustration, we notably identify a decoupled pancake vortex liquid phase that is bounded by first-order and second-order decoupling lines in the magnetic field vs. temperature plane. These transitions potentially acc…
We calculate the field dependence of the critical current for the dense Josephson vortex lattice which is created by large magnetic field $B$ applied along the layers of atomically layered superconductors. In clean samples a finite critical current appears due to the interaction of the lattice with the boundaries. The boundary induces an alternating deformation of the lattice decaying inside the sample at the typical length, which is larger than the Josephson length and increases proportional to the magnetic field. The exact shape of this deformation and the total current flowing along the sur…
We investigate clean mutilayered structures of the SFS and SFSFS type, (where the S layer is intrinsically superconducting and the F layer is ferromagnetic) through numerical solution of the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for these systems. We obtain results for the pair amplitude, the local density of states, and the local magnetic moment. We find that as a function of the thickness $d_F$ of the magnetic layers separating adjacent superconductors, the ground state energy varies periodically between two stable states. The first state is an ordinary "0-state", in which the order…
The recent discovery of superconductivity with relatively high transition temperature Tc in the layered iron-based quaternary oxypnictides La[ O1-xFx] FeAs was a real surprise. The excitement generated can be seen by the number of subsequent works published within a very short period of time. Although there exists superconductivity in alloy that contains Fe element, LaOMPn (with M= Fe, Ni; and Pn=P and As) is the first system where Fe-element plays the key role to the occurrence of superconductivity. LaOMPn has a layered crystal structure with an Fe-based plane. It is quite natural to ask whet…
Single crystals of superconducting OsB_2 [T_c = 2.10(5) K] have been grown using a Cu-B eutectic flux. We confirm that OsB_2 crystallizes in the reported orthorhombic structure (space group Pmmn) at room temperature. Both the normal and superconducting state properties of the crystals are studied using various techniques. Heat capacity versus temperature C(T) measurements yield the normal state electronic specific heat coefficient γ= 1.95(1) mJ/mol K^2 and the Debye temperature Θ_D = 539(2) K. The measured frequencies of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are in good agreement with those predicted…
The superconductivity of high transition temperature (Tc) occurs in copper oxides with carrier-doping to an antiferromagnetic (AF) Mott insulator. This discovery more than thirty years ago immediately led to a prediction about the formation of a small Fermi pocket. This structure, however, has not yet been detected, while it could be a key element in relating high-Tc superconductivity to Mott physics. To address this long-standing issue, we investigate the electronic structure of a five-layered Ba2Ca4Cu5O10(F,O)2 with inner CuO2 planes demonstrated to be cleanest ever in cuprates. Most surpris…
The quasiparticle excitation spectrum of isolated vortices in clean layered d-wave superconductors is calculated. A large peak in the density of states in the "pancake" vortex core is found, in an agreement with the recent experimental data for high-temperature superconductors.
We study the thermodynamics of clean, layered superconductor/ferromagnet nanostructures using fully self consistent methods to solve the microscopic Bogoliubov-deGennes equations. From these self-consistent solutions the condensation free energies are obtained. The trilayer SFS junction is studied in particular detail: first order transitions between 0 and $π$ states as a function of the temperature $T$ are located by finding where the free energies of the two phases cross. The occurrence of these transitions is mapped as a function of the thickness $d_F$ of the F layer and of the Fermi waveve…
Motivated by recent experiments reporting the suppression of the critical current in superconducting Dayem bridges by the application of strong electrostatic fields, in this work we study the impact on the superconducting gap of charge redistribution in response to an applied electric field in thin crystalline metals. By numerically solving the BCS gap equation and the Poisson equation in a fully self-consistent way, we find that by reducing the pairing strength we observe an increased sensitivity of the gap on the applied field, showing sudden rises and falls that are compatible with surface …
The mixed phase of extremely type-II layered superconductors in perpendicular magnetic field is studied theoretically via the layered XY model with uniform frustration. A partial duality analysis is carried out in the weak-coupling limit. It consistently accounts for both intra-layer (pancake) and inter-layer (Josephson) vortex excitations. The main conclusion reached is that dislocations of the two-dimensional (2D) vortex lattices within layers drive a unique second-order melting transition at high perpendicular fields between a low-temperature superconducting phase that displays a Josephson …
We study the effect of thermal fluctuations of the s-wave order parameter of a quasi two dimensional superconductor on the nuclear spin relaxation rate near the transition temperature Tc. We consider both the effects of the amplitude fluctuations and the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase fluctuations in weakly coupled layered superconductors. In the treatment of the amplitude fluctuations we employ the Gaussian approximation and evaluate the longitudinal relaxation rate 1/T1 for a clean s-wave superconductor, with and without pair breaking effects, using the static pair fluctuation p…
Persistent scaling behavior of magnetization in layered high $T_c$ superconductors with short--range columnar defects is explained within the Ginzburg Landau theory. In the weak field region, the scaling function differs from that of a clean sample and both the critical and crossing temperatures are renormalized due to defects. In the strong field region, defects are effectively suppressed and scaling function, as well as critical and crossing temperatures are the same as in a clean superconductor. This picture is consistent with recent experimental results
We perform scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy study on the layered iron based superconductor KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ with a critical temperature of about 33.5 K. Two types of terminated surfaces are generally observed after cleaving the samples in vacuum. On one commonly obtained surface, we observe a full gap feature with energy gap values close to 4.6 meV. This type of spectrum shows a clean and uniform full gap in space, which indicates the absence of gap nodes in this superconductor. Quasiparticle interference patterns have also been measured, which show no scattering patterns bet…
The quasiparticle energy spectrum of an isolated vortex in a clean layered d-wave superconductor is calculated. The Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations are solved perturbatively, within the model of step-variation of the gap function, adjusting the Caroli, de Gennes and Matricon approach for low-lying excitations in cuprates. A large peak in the density of states in a "pancake" vortex is found, as a consequence of two-dimensionality and strong coupling.
We investigate the effects of disorder on a layered superconductor. The clean system is known to have a first order phase transition which is clearly identified by a sharp peak in the specific heat. The peak is lost abruptly as the strength of the disorder is increased. Hence, for strong disorder there is no phase transition as a function of temperature but merely a crossover which is still detectable in the IV characteristic.
The quasiparticle excitation spectrum of an isolated vortex in a clean layered d-wave superconductor is calculated, using both the Bogoliubov--de Gennes and the quasiclassical Eilenberger equations. Analytical solutions are obtained within the model of step-variation of the gap function, adjusting the Caroli, de Gennes and Matricon approach for low-lying excitations in cuprates. A large peak in the density of states in the "pancake" vortex core is found, caused by the two-dimensional and strong coupling nature of high-temperature superconductivity.
By deintercalation of Na+ followed by inserting bilayers of water molecules into the host lattice, the layered cobalt oxide of gamma-Na0.7CoO2 undergoes a topotactic transformation to a layered cobalt oxyhydrate of Na0.35(H2O)1.3CoO2-delta with the c-axis expanded from c = 10.9 anstrom to c = 19.6 anstrom. In this paper, we demonstrate that the superconducting phase of c = 19.6 anstrom can be directly obtained by simply immersing gamma-Na0.7CoO2 powders in electrolyzed/oxidized (EO) water, which is readily available from a commercial electrolyzed water generator. We found that high oxidation-r…
The Ginzburg-Landau equations are derived from the microscopic theory for clean layered superconductors with $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing symmetry, including the Pauli paramagnetism effect. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ parallel to the $c$ axis is calculated. A comparison with the experimental data for YBCO suggests that, relative to the orbital effect, the Pauli paramagnetism contribution to $H_{c2}$ is significant. The reversible magnetization $M$ in high magnetic fields is also calculated, showing strong temperature dependence of the slope $dM/dH$, as a consequence of the spin paramagnetism. A…
