In quasi low dimensional superconductors under {\it parallel} magnetic fields applied along a conducting direction, vortex lattices with a modulation of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type {\it perpendicular} to the field may occur due to an enhanced paramagnetic depairing. As the strength of an in-plane field is varied in a Q2D material, the Josephson vortex lattices accompanied by nodal planes are formed in higher Landau level (LL) modes of the superconducting (SC) order parameter and show field-induced structural transitions. A change of orientation of nodal planes induced by these transitions should be observed in transport measurements for an out-of-plane current in real superconductors with point disorder effective on the SC layers. Further, the $H_{c2}$-transition from this higher LL state to the normal phase is of second order for moderately strong paramagnetic effects but, in the case with a strong enough paramagnetic effect, becomes discontinuous as well as the transition between this modulated state and an ordinary Abrikosov vortex lattice in the lowest LL. Relevance of these results to recent observations in organic superconductors suggesting the presence of an FFLO state are discussed.
Equations describing the resistive state of a layered superconductor with anisotropic pairing are derived. The similarity with a stack of Josephson junctions is found at small voltages only, when current density in the direction perpendicular to the layers can be interpreted as a sum of the Josephson superconducting, the Ohmic dissipative and the interference currents. In the spatially uniform state differential conductivity at higher voltages becomes negative. Nonuniformity of the current distribution generates the branch imbalance and violates the Josephson relation between frequency and vol…
The intrinsic Josephson effect in the high-Tc superconductors is studied using the layered two-dimensional t-J model. The d.c.Josephson current which flows perpendicular to the t-J planes is obtained within the mean-field approximation and the Gutzwiller approximation. We find that the Josephson current has its maximum near the optimum doping region as a function of the doping rate.
We consider dynamics of Josephson vortex lattice in layered superconductors with magnetic, charge (electrostatic) and charge-imbalance (quasiparticle) interactions between interlayer Josephson junctions taken into account. The macroscopic dynamical equations for interlayer Josephson phase differences, intralayer charge and electron-hole imbalance are obtained and used for numerical simulations. Different transformations of the vortex lattice structure are observed. It is shown that the additional dissipation due to the charge imbalance relaxation leads to the stability of triangular lattice.
We have proposed to employ the microwave S parameters method to measure phase oscillation modes (POMs) in Josephson coupled-layered superconductors. For the first time, in SmBa2Cu3O7 (SmBCO) and YBa2Cu3O7-b (YBCO) at 77 K we have directly observed some POMs far below the Josephson plasma frequency. A series of discrete modes have been observed and discussed qualitatively in the POMs. The method may be a powerful and flexible tool in this field.
The Josephson plasma resonance in layered superconductors with alternating critical current densities is investigated in a low perpendicular magnetic field. In the vortex solid phase the current densities and the squared bare plasma frequencies decrease linearly with the magnetic field. Taking into account the coupling due to charge fluctuations on the layers, we extract from recent optical data for SmLa_{1-x} Sr_x CuO_{4-delta} the Josephson penetration length lambda_{ab} approximately 1100 A parallel to the layers at T=10 K.
We consider the ground state configurations of the Josephson vortex lattice in layered superconductors. Due to commensurability effects with the layered structure, the lattice has multiple configurations, both aligned with layers and rotated at finite angle. At low fields the lattice switches between these configurations via first-order phase transitions. These transitions become more frequent at smaller fields. With increasing magnetic field a dilute lattice transforms first into a sheared dense lattice. With further increase of field, the shear deformation smoothly vanishes at a second-order…
The Josephson-plasma and vortex modes in layered superconductors have been studied theoretically for low magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to layers. The two modes belong to the same lowest-frequency branch of collective-mode spectrum localized near vortices. This is the Josephson-plasma resonance if pancakes are strongly pinned and cannot move. Otherwise the lowest-frequency mode is a vortex mode governed by pancake pinning and the vortex mass. The latter is strongly enhanced by wandering of a vortex line around its average direction. The recently observed jump of the magnetoabsorpti…
The coupling of Josephson oscillations in layered superconductors is studied with help of a tunneling Hamiltonian formalism. The general form of the current density across the barriers between the superconducting layers is derived. The induced charge fluctuations on the superconducting layers lead to a coupling of the Josephson oscillations in different junctions. A simplified set of equations is then used to study the non-linear dynamics of the system. In particular the influence of the coupling on the current-voltage characteristics is investigated and upper limits for the coupling strength …
A general phenomenological theory describing dynamics of Josephson vortices coupled to wide class of linear waves in layered high-T$_c$ superconductors is developed. The theory is based on hydrodynamic long wave approximation and describes interaction of vortices with electromagnetic, electronic and phonon degrees of freedom on an equal footing. In the limiting cases the proposed theory degenerates to simple models considered earlier. In the framework of the suggested model we undertook the numerical simulation of resistive state in layered superconductors placed in external magnetic field and…
Light scattering by Josephson vortices is theoretically predicted. An experimental set-up for the observation of the effect is proposed. The magnetic field should be parallel to the CuO_2 layers and the crystal surface. The falling light should be at grazing angles, and the Bragg scattering must be almost backscattering. The distance between the columns of the Josephson vortices must be slightly smaller than the light-wavelength. The surface should be very clean and flat in order light scattering by surface terraces and surface roughness to give the relatively small background.
Phase transitions of a flux lattice in layered superconductors with magnetic field perpendicular to the layers and in presence of disorder are studied. We find that the Josephson coupling between layers leads to a strongly pinned Josephson glass (JG) phase at low temperatures and fields. The JG phase undergoes either a decoupling transition with increasing field or a depinning transition with increasing temperature. The resulting phases undergo further depinning and decoupling transitions, respectively, resulting in a phase diagram with a multicritical point where four phases meet. The phase d…
Conductivity mechanism in the regime of the intrinsic Josephson effect in layered superconductors with singlet d-wave pairing is studied theoretically. The cases of coherent and incoherent interlayer tunneling of electrons are considered. The theory with coherent tunneling describes main qualitative features of the effect observed in highly anisotropic high-T$_c$ superconductors at voltages smaller than the amplitude of the superconducting gap, mechanism of the resistivity being related to excitations of the quasiparticles via the d-wave gap. At voltages of the order of the gap amplitude and l…
In this publication a microscopic theory for the coupling of intrinsic Josephson oscillations in layered superconductors with longitudinal c-axis-phonons is developed. It is shown that the influence of lattice vibrations on the c-axis transport can be fully described by introducing an effective longitudinal dielectric function. Resonances in the I-V-characteristic appear at van Hove singularities of both acoustical and optical longitudinal phonon branches. This provides a natural explanation of the recently discovered subgap structures in the I-V-characteristic of highly anisotropic cuprate su…
We find systematic signatures suggesting a different superconducting nature for a triple-layered cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ with respect to a double-layer through the properties of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs). Our measurements on the current-voltage characteristics reveal that the $c$-axis maximum Josephson current density is sensitive to the superfluid density in outer planes while the critical temperature and the superconducting gap remain unaffected. Switching dynamics of stacked IJJs exhibit that the fluctuation in gauge-invariant phase difference of an IJJ implies…
The present paper is an extension of 'cond-mat/0312673'. The construction of a hybrid discrete-continuous model of layered superconductors is presented. The model bases on the classic Lawrence-Doniach scenario with admitting, however, long-range interactions between atomic planes. Moreover, apart from Josephson couplings they involve the proximity effects. The range of interactions can, in principle, be arbitrary large. The solutions corresponding to the range K=2 are found. The mechanism of enhancement of superconductivity caused by the proximity effect and the presence of higher Josephson co…
The present paper develops the ideas introduced in {\em cond-mat/0312673}. The construction of a hybrid discrete-continuous model of layered superconductors is briefly presented. The model bases on the classic Lawrence-Doniach scenario with admitting, however, long-range interactions between atomic planes. Moreover, apart from Josephson couplings they involve the proximity effects. The range of interactions, K, can, in principle, be arbitrary large. The solutions corresponding to the range K=2 are exposed. The fundamental excitations are understood as deviations from stable ground states. The f…
We calculate the field dependence of the critical current for the dense Josephson vortex lattice which is created by large magnetic field $B$ applied along the layers of atomically layered superconductors. In clean samples a finite critical current appears due to the interaction of the lattice with the boundaries. The boundary induces an alternating deformation of the lattice decaying inside the sample at the typical length, which is larger than the Josephson length and increases proportional to the magnetic field. The exact shape of this deformation and the total current flowing along the sur…
We calculate Ic(T) and Rn for both coherent and incoherent electron tunneling across a c-axis break junction between nu=s,d_x^2-y^2-wave superconducting half spaces, each with c-axis bandwidth 2J. Coherent quasiparticle tunneling only occurs for voltages V<2J/e, leading to difficulties in measuring Rn for underdoped samples. The coherent part of Ic(0) is independent of Delta_nu(0) for J/Delta_nu(0)<<1, and can be large. Our results are discussed with regard to recent experiments.
We analytically study stability of sliding lattice of Josephson vortices driven by a transport current in the stack direction in strong in-plane magnetic field. In contrast to recent findings we obtain that there are no diverse configurations of stable vortex lattices, and, hence, the stable sliding vortex lattice can not be selected by boundary conditions. We find that only the triangular (rhombic) lattice can be stable, its stability being limited by a critical velocity value. At higher velocities there are no simple stable lattices with single flux line per unit cell. Oblique sliding lattic…
Many superconducting materials are composed of weakly coupled conducting layers. Such a layered structure has a very strong influence on the properties of vortex matter in a magnetic field. This review focuses on the properties of the Josephson vortex lattice generated by the magnetic field applied in the layers direction. The theoretical description is based on the Lawrence-Doniach model in the London limit which takes into account only the phase degree of freedom of the superconducting order parameter. In spite of its simplicity, this model leads to an amazingly rich set of phenomena. We rev…
In the frame of an exactly solvable model we calculate electric and magnetic fields created by uniformly moving lattice of Josephson vortices driven by the transport current in the magnetic field parallel to conducting layers. The distribution of fields and currents is strongly modified at large velocities of the vortex lattice, plasma oscillations of superconducting electrons being excited by flux flow at low temperatures. This modifies the flux flow resistivity and results in interference features in I-V curves, thus regions of negative differential conductivity appear in which the uniform m…
We study vortex matter in layered superconductors in the limit of zero Josephson coupling. The long range of the interaction between pancake vortices in the c-direction allows us to employ a mean-field method: all attractive inter-layer interactions are reduced to an effective substrate potential, which pancakes experience in addition to the same-layer pancake repulsion. We perform numerical simulations of this mean-field model using two independent numerical implementations with different simulation methods (Monte-Carlo sampling and Langevin molecular dynamics). The substrate potential is upd…
We present an exact mathematical description of Josephson vortices and of the Meissner effect in periodic thin-layer superconductor/insulator structures with an arbitrary number of identical junctions N-1 (N is the number of superconducting layers) in terms of localized solutions to a system of differential equations for phase differences. We establish a general criterion of the existence of localized solutions. We show that Meissner solutions are characterized by several Josephson lengths [N/2 lengths for even N, and (N-1)/2 lengths for odd N]. We derive an exact expression for the superheati…
We demonstrate a Josephson junction with a weak link containing two ferromagnets, with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and independent switching fields in which the critical current can be set by the mutual orientation of the two layers. Such pseudospin-valve Josephson junctions are a candidate cryogenic memory in an all superconducting computational scheme. Here, we use Pt/Co/Pt/CoB/Pt as the weak link of the junction with $d_\text{Co} = 0.6$ nm, $d_\text{CoB} = 0.3$ nm, and $d_\text{Pt} = 5$ nm and obtain a $60\%$ change in the critical current for the two magnetization configurations of t…
We present a theory of the Josephson effect in a twofold-tilted Josephson junction made by d-wave anisotropic layered superconductors. We find the appearance of an intrinsic electrical resistance that arises from the misalignment of the superconductive planes (the CuO_2 planes in YBCO) in the two electrodes. This intrinsic contribution to the tunnel barrier has several non-trivial consequences. The result is relevant for understanding the electric transport properties of [100] tilt and [100] tilt-tilt Josephson junctions based on d-wave superconductors.

A large decrease is observed in the critical current density of YBCO coated conductors (CC) and related compounds when a strong perpendicular magnetic field is applied. While measurements are generally carried out at 77K only, here we present a magnetic technique permitting to determine the critical current per unit width of conductor (Icr/w) in a large temperature range. We report measurements carried out on various CCs that show that, in addition to the reduction in the critical temperature that can be attributed to the low value of the irreversibility field near Tc, the field application re…
We report on the successful terahertz emission (0.6$\sim$1 THz) that is continuous and tunable in its frequency and power, by driving Josephson vortices in resonance with the collective standing Josephson plasma modes excited in stacked Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$ intrinsic Josephson junctions. Shapiro-step detection was employed to confirm the terahertz-wave emission. Our results provide a strong feasibility of developing long-sought solid-state terahertz-wave emission devices.
We find a mapping of the layered sine-Gordon model to an equivalent gas of topological excitations and determine the long-range interaction potentials of the topological defects. This enables us to make a detailed comparison to the so-called layered vortex gas, which can be obtained from the layered Ginzburg-Landau model. The layered sine-Gordon model has been proposed in the literature as a candidate field-theoretical model for Josephson-coupled high-T_c superconductors, and the implications of our analysis for the applicability of the layered sine-Gordon model to high-T_c superconductors are…
We predict the existence of surface waves in layered superconductors in the THz frequency range, below the Josephson plasma frequency $ω_J$. This wave propagates along the vacuum-superconductor interface and dampens in both transverse directions out of the surface (i.e., towards the superconductor and towards the vacuum). This is the first prediction of propagating surface waves in any superconductor. These predicted surface Josephson plasma waves are important for different phenomena, including the complete suppression of the specular reflection from a sample (Wood's anomalies) and a huge enh…
We predict a new branch of surface Josephson plasma waves (SJPWs) in layered superconductors for frequencies higher than the Josephson plasma frequency. In this frequency range, the permittivity tensor components along and transverse to the layers have different signs, which is usually associated with negative refraction. However, for these frequencies, the bulk Josephson plasma waves cannot be matched with the incident and reflected waves in the vacuum, and, instead of the negative-refractive properties, abnormal surface modes appear within the frequency band expected for bulk modes. We also …
We study the pancake lattice system induced by application of transverse magnetic filed to the layered superconductor. A simple statistical field theory for the pancake lattice is derived. It incorporates effects of the magnetic interaction between pancakes as well as those of the interlayer Josephson coupling. The proposed description enables us to estimate the pancake crystal melting temperature from above. Also, it allows us to compare directly the effects of the magnetic and Josephson energies on the statistical properties of the pancake lattice. We demonstrate that even for such an anisot…
We derive the power of direct radiation into free space induced by Josephson oscillations in intrinsic Josephson junctions of highly anisotropic layered superconductors. We consider the super-radiation regime for a crystal cut in the form of a thin slice parallel to the c-axis. We find that the radiation correction to the current-voltage characteristic in this regime depends only on crystal shape. We show that at large enough number of junctions oscillations are synchronized providing high radiation power and efficiency in the THz frequency range. We discuss crystal parameters and bias current…
Andreev reflection is investigated in layered anisotropic normal metal / superconductor (N/S) systems in the case of an energy gap Δin S not negligible with respect to the Fermi energy E_F, as it probably occurs with high critical temperature superconductors (HTS). We find that in these limits retro-reflectivity, which is a fundamental feature of Andreev reflection, is broken modifying sensitively transport across S/N interfaces. We discuss the consequences for supercurrents in HTS Josephson junctions and for the midgap states in S-N contacts
We show that a moving Josephson vortex in spatially modulated layered superconductors generates out-of-plane THz radiation. Remarkably, the magnetic and in-plane electric fields radiated are of the same order, which is very unusual for any good-conducting medium. Therefore, the out-of-plane radiation can be emitted to the vacuum without the standard impedance mismatch problem. Thus, the proposed design can be more efficient for tunable THz emitters than previous proposals, for radiation only propagating along the ab-plane.
We report numerical simulations of the nonlinear dynamics of Josephson vortices driven by strong dc currents in layered superconductors. Dynamic equations for interlayer phase differences in a stack of coupled superconducting layers were solved to calculate a drag coefficient $η(J)$ of the vortex as a function of the perpendicular dc current density $J$. It is shown that Cherenkov radiation produced by a moving vortex causes significant radiation drag increasing $η(v)$ at high vortex velocities $v$ and striking instabilities of driven Josephson vortices moving faster than a terminal velocity $…
A hybrid discrete-continuous model of layered superconductors with interlayer Josephson couplings of arbitrary range is constructed. The conditions required by gauge invariance and thermodynamical stability of the model are determined. Some important special cases, in particular transition to the classic Lawrence-Doniach model, are discussed. The conditions for presence of alternating solutions and the posibilities to describe such states of a superconductor by the continuum or bi-continuum models are examined. The enhancement of superconductivity caused by the presence of higher order Josephs…
We have measured spin-triplet supercurrent in Josephson junctions of the form S/F'/F/F'/S, where S is superconducting Nb, F' is a thin Ni layer with in-plane magnetization, and F is a Ni/[Co/Ni]n multilayer with out-of-plane magnetization. The supercurrent in these junctions decays very slowly with F-layer thickness, and is much larger than in similar junctions not containing the two F' layers. Those two features are the characteristic signatures of spin-triplet supercurrent, which is maximized by the orthogonality of the magnetizations in the F and F' layers. Magnetic measurements confirm the…
The recent growing interest in terahertz (THz) and sub-THz science and technology is due to its many important applications in physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, and medicine. We review the problem of linear and non-linear THz and sub-THz Josephson plasma waves in layered superconductors and their excitations produced by moving Josephson vortices. We start by discussing the coupled sine-Gordon equations for the gauge-invariant phase difference of the order parameter in the junctions, taking into account the effect of breaking the charge neutrality, and deriving the spectrum of Josephson p…
We analytically examine the excitation of surface Josephson plasma waves (SJPWs) in periodically-modulated layered superconductors. We show that the absorption of the incident electromagnetic wave can be substantially increased, for certain incident angles, due to the resonance excitation of SJPWs. The absorption increase is accompanied by the decrease of the specular reflection. Moreover, we find the physical conditions guaranteeing the total absorption (and total suppression of the specular reflection). These conditions can be realized for Bi2212 superconductor films.
We show that a specific superposition principle is valid for \emph{nonlinear} Josephson plasma waves in layered superconductors. We study theoretically the reflection and transmission of terahertz waves through a finite-size superconducting slab placed inside a rectangular waveguide with ideal-metal walls. We assume that the superconducting layers are parallel to the waveguide axis. We show that there exist two specific mutually-orthogonal polarizations for waves which, in spite of the nonlinearity, reflect and transmit through the superconductor \emph{independently}. The wave of the first pol…
A new family of dynamic states are found in a stack of inductively coupled intrinsic Josephson junctions in the absence of an external magnetic field. In this state, $(2m_l+1)π$ phase kinks with integers $m_l$'s stack along the c axis and lock neighboring junction together. Large dc power is pumped into plasma oscillation via kinks at the cavity resonance. The plasma oscillation is uniform along the c axis with the frequency satisfying the ac Josephson relation. Thus this state supports strong terahertz radiation and seems to be compatible with the recent experimental observations.
We investigate the response of a stack of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) to terahertz (THz) electromagnetic (EM) irradiation. A significant amplification of the EM wave can be achieved by the IJJs stack when the incident frequency equals to one of the cavity frequencies. The irradiation excites pi phase kinks in the junctions, which stimulate the cavity resonance when the bias voltage is tuned. A large amount of dc energy is then pumped into the Josephson plasma oscillation, and the incident wave gets amplified. From the profound current step in IV characteristics induced at the cavity r…
We derive the transmission coefficient, $T(ω)$, for grazing incidence of crystals with spatial dispersion accounting for the excitation of multiple modes with different wave vectors ${\bf k}$ for a given frequency $ω$. The generalization of the Fresnel formulas contains the refraction indices of these modes as determined by the dielectric function $ε(ω,{\bf k})$. Near frequencies $ω_e$, where the group velocity vanishes, $T(ω)$ depends also on an additional parameter determined by the crystal microstructure. The transmission $T$ is significantly suppressed, if one of the excited modes is decay…
We investigate dynamics of Josephson vortex lattice in layered high T$_{c}$ superconductors at high magnetic fields. It is shown that the average electric current depends on the lattice structure and is resonantly enhanced when the Josephson frequency matches the frequency of the plasma mode. We find the stability regions of moving lattice. It is shown that a specific lattice structure at given velocity is uniquely selected by the boundary conditions: at small velocities periodic triangular lattice is stable and looses its stability at some critical velocity. At even higher velocities a struct…
We present measurements of Josephson junctions containing three magnetic layers with noncolinear magnetizations. The junctions are of the form $S/F^{\prime}/N/F/N/F^{\prime \prime}/S$, where $S$ is superconducting Nb, $F^\prime$ is either a thin Ni or Permalloy layer with in-plane magnetization, $N$ is the normal metal Cu, $F$ is a synthetic antiferromagnet (SAF) with magnetization perpendicular to the plane, composed of Pd/Co multilayers on either side of a thin Ru spacer, and $F^{\prime \prime}$ is a thin Ni layer with in-plane magnetization. The supercurrent in these junctions decays more s…
We calculate exactly the Josephson current for $c$-axis coherent tunneling between two layered superconductors, each with internal coherent tight-binding intra- and interlayer quasiparticle dispersions. Our results also apply when one or both of the superconductors is a bulk material, and include the usually neglected effects of surface states. For weak tunneling, our results reduce to our previous results derived using the tunneling Hamiltonian. Our results are also correct for strong tunneling. However, the $c$-axis tunneling results of Tanaka and Kashiwaya are shown to be incorrect in any l…
A renormalization group theory for a system consisting of coupled superconducting layers as a model for typical high-temperature superconducters is developed. In a first step the electromagnetic interaction over infinitely many layers is taken into account, but the Josephson coupling is neglected. In this case the corrections to two-dimensional behavior due to the presence of the other layers are very small. Next, renormalization group equations for a layered system with very strong Josephson coupling are derived, taking into account only the smallest possible Josephson vortex loops. The appli…
Josephson junctions containing three ferromagnetic layers with non-collinear magnetizations between adjacent layers carry spin-triplet supercurrent under certain conditions. The signature of the spin-triplet supercurrent is a relatively slow decay of the maximum supercurrent as a function of the thickness of the middle ferromagnetic layer. In this work we focus on junctions where the middle magnetic layer is a [Co/Pd]$_N$ multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), while the outer two layers have in-plane anisotropy. We compare junctions where the middle PMA layer is or is not con…
A layered antiferromagnetic superconductor in the mixed state may posses magnetic domains created along the Josephson vortices. This may happen when an external magnetic field is strong enough to flip over magnetic moments, lying in the phase core of the Josephson vortex, from their ground state configuration. The formation of the domain structure of the vortices modifies the surface energy barrier of the superconductor. During this process the entrance of the flux is stopped and a newly created state exhibits perfect shielding. Such behavior should be visible as a plateau on the dependence of…
I derive an approximate analytic solution for the in-plane vortex (fluxon) in layered superconductors and stacked Josephson junctions (SJJ's) with arbitrary number of layers. The validity of the solution is verified by numerical simulation. It is shown that in SJJ's with large number of thin layers, phase/current and magnetic field of the fluxon are decoupled from each other. The variation of phase/current is confined within the Josephson penetration depth, $λ_J$, along the layers, while magnetic field decays at the effective London penetration depth, $λ_c \gg λ_J$. For comparison with real hi…
We investigated transient optical responses in an optimally-doped high-Tc superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4 (x=0.15) by using 800-nm optical pump and terahertz probe spectroscopy. With increasing the photoexcitation intensities, the Josephson plasma resonance shows a gradual redshift, indicating the suppression of superconductivity by the photoexcitation. With further increasing the photoexcitation intensities, a new longitudinal mode in the loss function spectrum appears and grows from the high energy side, accompanied by a new transverse mode as manifested in the conductivity spectrum. The observe…
Based on computer simulations and theoretical analysis, a new dynamic state is found in inductively coupled intrinsic Josephson junctions in the absence of an external magnetic field. In this state, the plasma oscillation is uniform along the c axis and there are $(2m+1)π$ phase kinks, with $m$ being an integer, periodic and thus non-uniform in the $c$ direction. In the IV characteristics, the state manifests itself as current steps occurring at all cavity modes. Inside the current steps, the plasma oscillation becomes strong, which generates several harmonics in frequency spectra at a given v…
The Josephson plasma resonance (JPR) provides a sensitive probe of vortex states in layered superconductors. We demonstrate that in the case of weak damping in the liquid phase, broadening of the JPR line is caused mainly by random Josephson coupling arising from the density fluctuations of pancake vortices. In this case the JPR line has the universal shape, which is determined only by parameters of the superconductors and temperature. This mechanism gives a natural explanation for the experimentally observed asymmetric lineshape. The tail at high frequencies arises due to mixing of the propag…
We have theoretically studied oblique surface waves (OSWs) which propagate along the interface between a dielectric and a layered superconductor. We assume that this interface is perpendicular to the superconducting layers, and OSWs at the interface can propagate at an arbitrary angle with respect to them. The electromagnetic field of the OSWs in a layered superconductor is a superposition of an ordinary wave (with its electric field parallel to the layers) and an extraordinary wave (with its magnetic field parallel to the layers). We have derived the dispersion equation for the OSWs and shown…
We solve the problem of exact minimization of the Lawrence-Doniach (LD) free-energy functional in parallel magnetic fields. We consider both the infinite in the layering direction case (the infinite LD model) and the finite one (the finite LD model). We prove that, contrary to a prevailing view, the infinite LD model does not admit solutions in the form of isolated Josephson vortices. For the infinite LD model, we derive a closed, self-consistent system of mean-field equations involving only two variables. Exact solutions to these equations prove simultaneous penetration of Josephson vortices …
We study the decoupling transition of flux lattices in a layered superconductors at which the Josephson coupling J is renormalized to zero. We identify the order parameter and related correlations; the latter are shown to decay as a power law in the decoupled phase. Within 2nd order renormalization group we find that the transition is always continuous, in contrast with results of the self consistent harmonic approximation. The critical temperature for weak J is ~1/B, where B is the magnetic field, while for strong J it is~1/sqrt{B} and is strongly enhanced. We show that renormaliztion group c…
